Lying between Mount Vesuvius and the sea, in the middle of the
Gulf of Naples as early as 500, the Turris Octava ancient fishing
village, was devoted to fishing for coral and sponges, drawing its
main resources from the sea. They were already dozens of armed
boats to "coral" (a typical boat used for fishing of coral. Only
later, in 1805, a Frenchman, Paolo Bartolomeo Martin, came to town
to buy lots of raw coral, started the first workshop for the
processing of precious material, thanks to a deprivation granted by
Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, who was actually in 'exemption from taxes
in exchange for training and start-up crafts for young Torre. The
skill of Martin, was soon assisted by a number of master engravers
of the school and the Roman and Neapolitan strong requests for
products made with typical style of the Neapolitan culture gave
impetus to this activity. Over the years, the Torre del Greco
production, always attentive to the fashions and styles has
evolved. Coral and cameo, in time, also were added processing of
materials of similar characteristics, such as pearl, shell and
semiprecious stones for the production of finished jewelry with
gold, especially developed in recent years, reinforcing the image
of the city.
cittadina.

Since ancient times coral has acquired a value almost similar to
gold, silver and other precious materials. The Greeks thought it
was actually generated by the drops of blood, leaving the severed
head of Medusa and preserve intact the prodigious powers of the
Gorgon. The coral has an ancient history and numerous legends in
the West and East, with therapeutic and superstitious. Its warm
color and the mysterious nature have fascinated for millennia, in
fact, all people on Earth who have had the opportunity to catch
them or trade and labor. Having always engaged scholars and
botanists about its location, poised between the mineral and
vegetable kingdom, in the eighteenth century, states that the coral
is not that the secretion produced by calcareous organisms in the
animal kingdom.
acquisito un valore quasi simile all’oro, all’argento ed altri
materiali preziosi.

nozze i battesimi. L’impulso determinante all’azienda e stata la
i fratelli Ascione: Mauro, Giuseppe, Marco, Giancarlo e Caterina,
designer e direttore artistico della produzione. Caterina ha
ereditato dal pa-dre una feconda vena creativa. Ella coniuga tale
come raffinato “contenitore culturale” polifunzionale e spazio
esposizioni nazionali e internazionali: Esposizione Internazio-nale
delle Industrie Marittime di Napoli 1871, Esposizione Mondiale di
Vienna 1873, Esposizione Internazionale di Philadelphia 1876,
Esposizione Internazionale di Firenze 1927, Esposizione

of working with gold, coral, cameo, semi-precious stones. The
company’s origins date back to last years of the Kingdom of Naples,

Ascione, son of owner of boats fishing for coral Dominic wanted to
start their own industrial activity linked to the coral in his
hometown, Torre del Greco, once the seat of manufactures since
1805. John Ascione awarded to his company te feature that it would
keep a family business for many generations. The first official
recognition of the originality and subtlety of the production of

creative streak. Since 1902, the House is based in the same
building in the center of Torre del Greco, even if the laboratory

all’Azienda Antonino De Si-mone.
“ Made in Italy”.

In 1805 a Frenchman, Paolo Bartolomeo Martin, from Marseilles
but of Genoese origin, founded the first coral working factory in
Torre del Greco and we can say that the history of the Antonino De
Simone firm runs through the centuries alongside that of coral
workmanship since the business was founded in 1830 and has been
passed from father to son in unbroken tradition for more than 180
years. Recently, the company was rewarded among the 150 historic
companies of Italy, which for their ultra-centenarian longevity
represent the best of the “ Made in Italy”. During the visit to the
factory, customers are offered an insight into this world, in fact
they can enjoy the workshop, where the long and painstaking
manufacturing process takes place, the Showroom where the most
refined creations are displayed and the “Antonino De Simone”
private collection, open to the public, showing more than 300 rare
and fine antique ethnic jewels with coral ( XVIII –XIX centuries).
Antonino De Simone (1931 -2010), as well as an important
businessman, was also a patron of the arts, in fact he promoted the
culture of Torre del Greco coral workmanship in the world, with the
six exhibitions of a project entitled The routes of coral” about
the ethnic jewels in coral and the two “Mirabilia Coralii” about
Italian masterpieces in coral, displayed at Banca Di Credito
Popolare in Torre del Greco. Antonino De Simone meant to reinforce
the image of his town as intimately linked to coral and through
these events, he encouraged also the knowledge of uses and customs
of distant peoples who loved the beautiful red gem. He dedicated
his life to the defence and the growth of this authentic treasure
of Mediterranean culture, potential vehicle of the development of
our territory.

altre prestigiose realtà commerciali, come quella di New York,
gioielleria, dopo essere state
memoria storica, fantasia e design.
boutiques mono-marca. In quell’anno, infatti, la prima nasce a
Lacco Ameno d’Ischia, a
ragione, è entrata a far
Unioncamere, in occasione
I fratelli
De Simone, instancabili
viaggiatori, esprimono concetti nuovi, creando pezzi unici, dove
convivono tradizione
e moderno design, dove l’impronta è precisa: ogni prodotto deve
essere speciale nel
materiale e nella forma. Tutte le realizzazioni, privilegiano la
qualità artigianale e mai le
quantità numeriche, sempre rispettando la materia. Oggi come

The story of Liverino starts between the 19th and 20th centuries
in a small Torre del Greco (Naples) workshop. It was 1894 when
Basilio Liverino bought a “corallina” (a coral-fishing boat) thus
laying the foundations of a firm to which each successive
generation has added something new and important to the wealth of
tradition acquired during the course of time by this coral
“dynasty”. Vincenzo, the founder’s son, then initiated the working
of cameos and Asian coral imported from Japan; moreover, he
introduced the firm’s exports into the Swiss and German markets and
the supply of coral to the better known Italian jewellery firms.
Grandson Basilio, after taking over his father’s company together
with his brothers, began to run the firm in the early Seventies
widening its activities, exploring new markets and consolidating
its prestige also through important cultural activities. Today, he
is still at the head of the firm in which also work - in various
areas of re-sponsibility - his three heirs Vincenzo, Maria Carmela
and Elvira while now, five generations la-ter, there is again
another Basilio Liverino, son of Vinceno and the brother Andrea.
The lion’s sha-re is obviously taken up by coral products, which
alone account for seven-ty per cent of the total; the remaining
thirty percent is shared by cameos and pearls imported from Japan
and exclusively distributed on the domestic market. The firm has a
network of representa-tives in Italy and abroad (Japan and South
East Asia), it exhibits at the Basle, Vicenza, Tokyo, Hong Kong and
Beijing shows, and is distributed all over the world. Much of the
production activity concerns the supply of standard sizes and
shapes to wholesalers and manufacturers. Both the cameos and the
coral cabochon cuts are strictly calibrated to be easily and
precisely mounted on clients’ settings. Equally significant,
particularly in terms of reflected image, are the special jobs in
coral commissioned by important jewellery and watch brands. Over
the past twenty years, Liverino has flanked output and distribution
of semi-finished items with the development of “finished”
lines.

dell’alternanza nominati-
nelle migliori boutiques

Basil Liverino was sixteen when he acquired on Ponte
Vecchio in Florence an anti-
que cameo. So he decided his
future as an entrepreneur and
passionate collector of coral.
Today the collection of corals
and cameos, has exceeded one
thousand pieces since 1986
and is collected in a real mu-
seum, created by digging the
volcanic rock for several me-
ters, to obtain safe and beauti-
ful exhibition halls. The struc-
ture is open to the public and
can be visited free of charge,
by reservation and booking.
The exhibited works come
from around the world and are
of different ages. The collec-
tion has contributed greatly to
the fame and prestige of the
entrepreneur who is also au-
thor of “The Coral” already
translated into English, Ger-
man and Japanese.
bellis-sime e sicure sale espositive.

cesso, dai figli Salvatore e Gennaro.
tevole preparazione.

The history goes back to his grandfather Mattia Mazza, who in
1905 decided to capi-talize on his experiences in the field of
coral and cameos in a business that earned more and more Torre del
Greco membership, supporting the economy town early last century.
The successes we are seeing very soon and the workshop begins to
grow, with the ac-quisition of new and valuable partnerships. The
same continuity is guaranteed and with increasing success, by the
sons Salvatore and Gennaro. As good and experienced crafts-men and
good parents, they transfuse all their knowledge in their children
and heirs. Among them, the cousins Bruno and Matthias are not only
a continuity of work, in the very special art of coral and cameo
appearan-ce, but joined a successful fine jewelry business,
com-bining it in a wonderful fu-sion. Meanwhile, the factory has
grown enough to decide, with fraternal vision and ab-solute
agreement for their children Bruno and Matthias to divide into two
new com-panies, able to accommo-date their future offspring, the
doors ready and strong again, enthusiasm and con-siderable
preparation. Here today we know the Mattia Mazza Jewellery, heir
sha-re on the company of his grandfather, namesake and founder of
business. The work of this jewelry are di-stinguished by their
topicali-ty and freshness in tone and in the forge. You can say,
looking at them, that coral is living a new life, crossing the
threshold of a dimension made of light and elegance, which, in step
with the times and fashions, brings with it old materials and all
their baggage of history and tradition.

The Professional Institute “Emiddio Mele” was born thanks to the
foresight of Basilic Liverino, he saw in Torre del Greco the
ability to create and train a new class of craftsmen, who could
deliver highly specialized and qualified professionals. Placed in
the premises of the Old Mill Marzoli, the harbor, the school is
able, for some years, to start young people to a perspective of
self-employment, where they become actors and entrepreneurs. The
work they perform, ranging from the use of raw materials, related
to the sea, such as coral, shell and mother of pearl, down to the
river stones and precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum.
The drawing and painting is to all the basic materials of their
art.
The Coral and the future
