A Word About Our Deacon Couple The phrase “Deacon Couple” is used by the Archdiocese to describe a married couple in which the husband has been ordained a Permanent Deacon. Here is why the term Deacon Couple fi ts Dcn. Jay & Candy:Over the past fi ve years of formation, they both have attended all of the classes, done the reading assignments, and turned in the homework assignments. They both completed the bereavement training through Catholic Cemeteries and are certifi ed lectors for the Archdiocese. They both are trained in how to conduct funeral vigils, memorial services outside of Mass, and graveside rites. Both served as presider during morning and evening Liturgy of the Hours, both discerning the Scrip-ture readings and preparing refl ections on how the reading stirred their spirits. The Holy Spirit would bring the reading to light, inspiring them to share the events in their life and how the reading brought the word of God to inspire them and call both to action. Together they have prepared presentations on various faith-related topics, prayer services as well as practicums for baptisms, Sunday celebrations absent a priest, weddings, and Deacon at the Altar. They have both received training in pastoral care and take communion to the homebound. While it is true that only Jay was ordained and can perform baptisms and witness a wedding, they both will be present and serve. The ministry of a Dea-con Couple is that of service. Service together. After ordination, some wives elect not to take an active role in the church with their husbands (usually due to small children at home, work or other commitments and obligations). This is not true for Deacon Jay & Candy. They made vows to each other, during their celebration of matrimony, 36 years prior to Deacon Jay making promises to the Archbishop. They will continue to serve the community of Holy Family and the Archdiocese of Los An-geles as a couple. Where one is present, both are present.

Third Annual Connolly Golf ClassicSave the Date November 10, 2017

The Second Annual Holy Family Connolly Classic was a great success! We had 130 golfers at Brookside and the scramble format allowed golfers of all skill levels to participate and have fun. The day wrapped up with a festive BBQ on the Brookside Patio and the raffl e and silent auction raised additional funds for our Holy Family Playground Project and Scholarship effort.

We are thankful to our generous sponsors, dedicated golf committee and volunteers who stepped up in support of the school. We look forward to the Connolly Classic being a tradition and community building day for years

to come. What a great day for Holy Family School and see you this year at the 3rd Annual Connolly Classic on November 10, 2017!

WORSHIP / THE GOOD W

ORD

Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother, John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfi gured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, "Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Rise, and do not be afraid."

And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone. As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, "Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."

Sunday PreschoolHoly Family Sunday Preschool is currently in need of a Director to oversee the 2017-2018 program year and an Art Director to oversee the purchasing/organization of craft materials. Both of these positions are volunteer positions. The duration of the commitment is August 2017 - May 2018. Volunteers will need to be Virtus trained and should complete Live Scan fi ngerprinting. Sunday Preschool is a cooperative preschool experience for 3, 4 and 5 year olds. Classes meet weekly during the 9:30 a.m. Mass on most Sundays in the Education Center building from October through May. Religious Education Religious education is a lifelong process that guides the baptized into “intimacy with Jesus Christ” (Catechesi Tradendae). Religious education is more than formal instruction; it is a conscious pathway to the development of the whole person as a model of Christ and permeates all facets of life in a Catholic community. Its foundations are laid in the home and built in partnership within the parish community.Th e ministry of Religious Education is an entrusted participant in this collaboration, serving the mission and expressing the love of Christ to our parish children! It is the goal of our parish, directors in formation, catechists and volunteers to work diligently with parents to encourage, support, strengthen and enhance their work in the formation of their children for the Kingdom of God. For more information contact Colette Villegas, DRE at 626.403.6118. For regular updates see our website: re.holyfamily.org. 6

Holy Family School HighlightsHoly Family School Prepares for Another Year of Faith Formation and Academic Growth. As Holy Family School looks to the future, it also helps us to refl ect on the successes of this past year. Some of our bigger initiatives included major campus improvements. This past year we added new gates and an improved security monitoring system, allowing us to fully close the campus during school hours and better monitor access. For parents, staff and students, this was an important initiative in our efforts to keep our students safe and secure. Last year we also initiated the development of our Outdoor Learning Center, which provided our students with an outdoor space for play, exploration and learning. This new outdoor space included a play structure, a larger play area, new landscaping, and a learning garden. This new area is used in a variety of ways by both students and staff, which has allowed us to extend our classroom into our outdoor space. For the coming year we have focused on classroom renovations and technology upgrades. Most of our classrooms are receiving new fl ooring and paint, along with some innovative design changes. In the area of technology, most classrooms are receiving state of the art Activeboards; these new boards extend our digital capacity by giving teachers and students a powerful learning tool for the classroom. We are excited to share these new advancements with our entire school community. As a parish-centered school, Holy Family continues to blend faith and academics in an environment that is conducive to learning. We are thankful to our parent community for their commitment to a quality education, as well as parishioners and alumni who support our mission. Once again we are looking forward to another exciting year of faith-fi lled activities and academic growth at Holy Family School!

LGBT MinistryMany LGBT people feel disconnected from their Church. Holy Family’s LGBT Ministry, in the spirit of ALL ARE WELCOME, provides a confi dential, safe environment for discussion, education and socialization every Wednesday evening. LGBT people, as well as their parents, are welcome. For further information please contact Elizabeth S. Taylor, Ph.D., Ministry Chair at 626.792.1103.

Embracing the Beginning of LifeEmbracing the Beginning of Life Ministry seeks to build awareness within our parish in accordance with Vatican II’s Charter on Rights of the Family: “Human Life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception.” Meetings are on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the Pastoral Center. Contact Rafael Flores [email protected] or Natalie Duran [email protected] for more information. Our next Life Rosary will be held on Tuesday, August 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel downstairs in the Pastoral Center. 7

Men’s Reading GroupTuesday, August 15 at 7:00 p.m., Guadalupe Room. At our next meeting, we will be discussing “The American Miracle, Divine Providence in the Rise of the Republic”by Michael Medved. Th e book recounts some of the most signifi cant events in America’s rise to prosperity and power. Historians may categorize these incidents as happy accidents, callous crimes, or the product of brilliant leadership, but the most notable leaders of the past four hundred years have identifi ed this good fortune as something else—a refl ection of divine providence.

Women’s Reading GroupTuesday, September 5, 7:00 p.m., Guadalupe Rm. Even if you haven’t read the book, join us for wine, snacks, and lively exchange on Brooks' The Road to Character. He shows that although morals have changed in the last century, we can still build our character to rise above a focus on material goods and personal success.

Kindred SpiritsParish life can be strongly marriage and family oriented with few opportunities for single adults to feel comfortable at social gatherings or in volunteer capacities. Kindred Spirits was formed to create comfortable ways for single adults over 40 to get to know each other, and to build supportive friendships that enhance their participation in parish life as well as create meaningful connections in their lives outside of church. Truly great friendships have evolved through sharing in social events, volunteer projects, and spiritual enrichment activities together. We attend the Saturday vigil Mass each fi rst Saturday, followed by going to a diff erent local restaurant. Other potential activities are discussed and plans made during these fi rst Saturday gatherings. If you would like additional information, please email [email protected].

Did you know? Violence within the home affects the entire communityAngelus News recently published an article on how domestic violence affects the entire family and the community members of all ages. In the article Dr. Ana Nogales, said “domestic violence not only leads to an altercation between two partners, but can harm innocent children. We need to be alert, and not tolerate abuse at home or in the community.” To learn more about what you can do read the full article at: http://www.angelusnews.com/articles/violence-within-the-home-affects-the-entire-community.

IMAGES Of America SOUTH

PASADENA We are honored to be one of the first stores in the area to feature a brand new book on South Pasadena. The “Images of America” series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today. Arcadia Publishing is proud to play a part in the preservation of local heritage, making history available to all. Author Rick Thomas is the former museum curator and vice-chair of education for the South Pasadena Preservation Foundation. He served on the South Pasadena Natural Resources Commission, help-ing to maintain a strict policy protecting the city’s great old-growth trees. Using touchstone photographs from his own collection—one of the San Gabriel Valley’s largest accumulations of historical im-ages and artifacts—as well as national, state and local historical ar-chives, Thomas provides a window to his city’s past and an under-standing of why its preservation if so important. Because Holy Family Parish is such an integral part of the history of the city, it follows that pictures of the Church and our campus would be included in the book...and they are. There is a stunning picture of our stained glass windows at night, as well as a remarkable aerial shot of the entire Church campus.

Ten Years Ago This Week We featured this book in our Sunday Highlights page in the bulletin, and thought it would be fun to re-visit it. Copies of this very interesting

book are available in the Bookstore.
