HOLY FAM

ILY HAPPENINGS

Landscape Revisioning ProjectSpring is here and we are thrilled to begin our

Landscape Revisioning Project and invite you to join us on this journey. The fi rst phase, Garden of the Angels, will encompass the front of the church, our proverbial doorstep to the surrounding community. The result for Holy Family and our neighborhood will be a beautiful native landscape and outdoor environment aligned with our faith and spirituality. In addition, the new design sends an important message to the community regarding Holy Family’s commitment to responsibly care for God’s creation.

Above all, the new landscape design captures the welcoming spirit of Holy Family Church, while introducing a variety of native and drought-tolerant plants as well as a new irrigation system that will reduce our water usage and costs signifi cantly. These updates will support and refl ect the natural ecosystem of our Southern California environment and allow for greater responsibility in using our shared water resources.

The Parish Landscape Committee collaborated with the landscape architecture fi rm SWA (swagroup.com) to accomplish a vibrant design that will welcome parishioners and friends at the front of the church, and to create a prayerful memorial space on the west side of the church along Rollin Street. The outdoor spaces will provide parishioners and visitors alike an opportunity to delight in God’s creation, which proclaims His glory.

To donate to this important project, or make a gift in someone’s memory for the Garden of the Angels, please go to www.holyfamily.org/landscape.

Kindred SpiritsParish life can be strongly marriage and family oriented with few opportunities for single adults to feel comfortable at social gatherings or in volunteer capacities. Kindred Spirits was formed to create comfortable ways for single adults over 40 to get to know each other, and to build supportive friendships that enhance their participation in parish life as well as create meaningful connections in their lives outside of church. Truly great friendships have evolved through sharing in social events, volunteer projects, and spiritual enrichment activities together. We attend the Saturday vigil Mass each fi rst Saturday, followed by going to a diff erent local restaurant. Other potential activities are discussed and plans made during these fi rst Saturday gatherings. If you would like additional information, please email [email protected].

Mission HaitiTraveling Donors

Two of Mission Haiti generous donors traveled with our January delegation to Haiti. They tell of their experience:Joaquin Saldivar, a roofi ng contractor, and I, Dolores Tukich, a retired teacher, have been contributing items to Haiti which we hoped the people there would fi nd useful. The items included tools, school supplies, musical instruments, work stations, generators and other miscellaneous items. We hoped to see if these items were what the Haitians needed. On arrival in Port-Au-Prince, our fi rst visit was to a school. We found the children clean and neatly dressed in uniforms. The classrooms were equipped with a blackboard, benches, and long tables which were used as desks. There were no textbooks. They learned by copying what the teacher wrote on the blackboard and writing in their composition books. I saw the need for books, school supplies, and mentors to help the teachers with effective teaching methods. Each school is equipped with a kitchen and cooking equipment so that the parents can make lunch for the students. For some this was the only meal that they received for the day. Traveling in Haiti, we couldn't help but notice the trash lining the roads. One of Fr. Tom's ambitions is to fi nd a way to remove the trash. The streams of water running along the sides of the road were muddy and polluted; this water was the same water the women used to wash their clothes. We would like to see streams with clean water to help the Haitian people with their day to day lives.Joaquin was especially interested in their agriculture. The soil is rich and many crops such as coconuts could be grown in a sustainable matter. I was amazed at the number of coconut trees that were loaded with coconuts. Other fruits that were growing in this area were mangos, papayas, a variety of bananas and avocados. Fr. Gerard, a native Haitian, operates 34 schools and the agricultural project. He showed us the many plants that could grow: beets, various kinds of beans, sweet peppers, chayote, tomatoes and onions, among others. He also had a fi sh tank where he raised many different breeds of fi sh to feed the people in his area. There was also a chicken farm, of which the eggs were delivered to schools for the children's meals. In the U.S, schools regularly update their text books. When new books arrive, the old ones are put in a warehouse. Since French is the native language in Haiti, I plan to contact the Education Department of Quebec to see if they have discarded any textbooks in French, which could be made available for Haiti, and allow education to be available for all children. We are all grateful for the progress that Fr. Tom Hagan, Douglas Campbell, and their team of Haitians have accomplished to help the Haitians lead a wholesome life.Thank you, Dolores and Joaquin. By the way, Dolores is a young 92 years of age.The Mission Haiti Committee

You can help children know they are understood As parents, educators and volunteers, we want children to know that we are not only authority fi gures in their lives, but also people they can trust. To foster authentic trust with children, it is important that they know that you understand them. One of the simplest ways to do this is by repeating back what children are telling you. When you do this, you are affi rming to the child that they are heard and un-derstood. The poems and reflections in The Art of Pausing:

Meditations for the Over-worked and Over-

whelmed are the work of three writers who inhabit very different worlds. But

for each, the reading and writing of haiku is an essential spiritual practice.

"Throughout her ... career, Mary Oliver has touched countless readers with her verse, expounding on her

love for the physical world and the powerful bonds between all living things. She now returns with a definitive collec-tion of her writing from

the last fifty years
