There are three main ways by which the existence of things is proved:

1 – Personal experience – ‘I have seen it, so I know it exists’

2 – Reliable evidence – ‘I have not seen it, but other people have convinced me that they have, so I accept its existence’.

3 – using a chain of reasoning to reach a conclusion (logic) – ‘I have not seen it but there must be a logical reason to believe its existence’.

Fifty words is all it takes (apparently)

I’ve heard it said that the difference between a person everyone thinks is intelligent and someone everyone thinks is ‘dumb’ is about fifty words. That is to say that intelligent sounding people use different words to describe things. Intelligent sounding people rarely say something is nice or good or that they are happy or sad. You could describe a peach as nice. But it is better to describe it as tasty, delicious or juicy.

You could say something makes you feel really happy. But it would be better to say something is massive, enormous or gigantic or tiny, minute or miniscule. If you use such words in your examinations the examiner will feel more positively towards your paper. It will show that you have carefully considered your words. These words will create pictures in the examiner’s mind. Remember that examiners will be marking hundreds of papers so yours has to stand out. It doesn’t even matter if you don’t use ‘fancy’ words in real life. * The examiner’s only knowledge of you is what he or she sees on the paper they are marking. Try this examination question and remember to use words that are more descriptive than nice or good.
