What is a community?

A group of interacting people usually organized around shared values or interests.

Long tail of communities

Connecting people has never been easier, meaning you can create a community around virtually anything. Even if it is a niche market, the people are already there, it is up to you to connect them!

The community and you

People can be part of many different communities at the same time. The communities you are part of and the people you connect to, say a lot about you!

Sense of Community

"Sense of Community is a feeling that members have of belonging, a feeling that members matter to one another and to the group, and a shared faith that members' needs will be met through their commitment to be together."

1. Membership

McMillan & Chavis break it up into these five categories:

a. Boundariesb. Emotional safetyc. Sense of belonging and identificationd. Personal investmente. A common symbol system

With online communities - you need to focus more on how to identify a member. (Profile pages, member badges, etc)

2. Influence

Community influence should be bidirectional. Members should feel that they have influence on the community, and vice versa. The power of the community should also have an influence on the individual members.

3. Integration and fulfillment

Members feel rewarded in some way for their participation in the community.

4. Shared emotional connection

This is one of the most important elements in creating a ‘sense of community.’ Members should invest energy into the community and build history together.

Membership life-cycle

PeripheralObserving the community and viewing content. Does not add to the community content or discussion.

Inbound Just beginning to engage the community. Starts to provide content. Tentatively interacts in a few discussions.

InsiderConsistently adds to the community discussion and content. Interacts with other users.

Boundary Recognized as a veteran participant. Connects with regulars to make higher concepts ideas.

Outbound Leaves the community for a variety of reasons. Interests have changed. Community has moved in a direction that doesn’t agree with.
