Exploring Sample Size

For a fund raiser for your school, you decided to sell milkshakes at the school’s Fun Fair. Before buying the ingredients, you wanted to know flavour preferences (Chocolate, Strawberry, or Vanilla). Instead of taking a census, you decide to use a sample from your class to represent the people who will attend the Fun Fair.

What sample size should you use?

Questions:

•Which sample size gave us the best prediction?

•Would our class be a representative sample of our school?

•Suppose that you wanted to know the cartoon-watching habits of students. You decide to use a sample from a class at a high school. Is this a representative sample of your school?

One Final Question:

Why is a large sample likely to be a better predictor of a population’s preferences than a small sample?

Please submit to Ms. King when you are finished (and before you leave)
