Larry Stratton '64 isn’t just the first in his neighborhood to have a residential wind turbine to power his house - he’s the first in Tuscola County. With the help of his son, Jeff Stratton, owner of J.D. Stratton Electric of Trav-erse City, the elder Stratton has turned most of his electricity over to the new wind turbine and said he could tell the difference at the meter immediately.

“I was excited when we hooked it up and the meter stopped,” Larry Stratton said. “I think it’s going to be a good program in the years to come.

Growing up in the Thumb and looking up to those Sports Editors of the past, Chad Wingert, '00, never thought he would find himself in a position like that.

So, for whatever reason, Sports Editor, Jon Sicotte, decided to give this kid from Mayville a break in the wide world of sports media. Born and raised in the little vil-lage of Mayville I found it very easy to become a sports fan. As a little kid I remember looking up to the athletes that passed through Mayville High School. Believe it or not, back in the day, Mayville had some pretty good teams. Yes, in football too. It was after a job shadow project in my middle school days when I dis-covered that somehow, some way I would work in sports for the rest of my life. I visited NBC-25 in Clio for a day during the time of Michigan State basketball’s “Flintstones”. The entire studio was buzzing with excite-ment and an endless list of ways to cover that story. After that day, I was hooked. Some of you may hear my name and automatically associate me with the grocery store in Mayville, Wingert’s Food Center. Since I spent most of my childhood years there, I suppose that is appropriate. My fam-ily has been nothing but supportive through everything I’ve done in my life, all while offering me a job to ac-commodate my hectic schedule. I was fortunate enough to start here at the Advertiser last fall just in time for an exciting football season. Jon quickly took me under his wing and gave me a great opportunity to cover Thumb-area sports. So, thank you, Jon, for taking a chance on me and leaving me well prepared to take over your comfy chair here at the T.C.Advertiser.

Follow the Dream

By Judy Seifert Advertiser Staff Writer Alan Lugo’s career began with shoes. He loved them. Bought plenty of them. Now he designs them. The 25-year-old former Mayville student works for Hush Puppies as a footwear designer. “I turned my passion into a ca-reer. That’s a message more young people today need to hear, follow the dream.” Lugo said. A degree in Industrial Design al-lows Lugo to do the work he really enjoys. After a year and a half with the Michigan-based company located in Rockford, Lugo will see eight of his shoe designs on the market this spring and 15 by the fall of 2009. “It’s so cool to see your work be-ing accepted,” he explained. “And to see it manufactured, being worn by people - well, that’s just an amazing feeling.” A 2000 graduate of Mayville High School, Lugo played basketball until the 10th grade, got into Little League baseball, was on the football team and ran track and field. “I love sports. When I was a kid what I enjoyed the most was shopping for my sports shoes,” Lugo said. “My grandmother bought me my first pair of Nike’s when I was in third grade. These were shoes I remember caring about, I thought I could really run fast in them.” And it was an art teacher, Pam TerBush '67, who supported Alan’s dream. “Without her help, I might not have thought to combine my artistic ability with a career in shoe design,” he added.

Alan’s mom, Bobbie Ann Lugo, lives in Caro, as do other family members. His father, Guadalupe Lugo, currently lives in Ogden, Utah. “I received so much support from my family, always did, and that’s really important too when following a dream,” Lugo said. Lugo began his career with Hush Puppies as an intern during the sum-mer of 2007. He was offered a full time position at the end of that intern-ship, working full time since January 2008. Hush Puppies, a division of Wol-verine Worldwide, is credited with creating the world’s first casual shoe. Started in 1958, the brand is recog-nized by its mascot, a basset hound. “I know most people associate Hush Puppies with, how shall I say this, an earlier generation. But that’s not the case,” he explained. “The new designs appeal to customers of all ages.” He added that most people re-member having to wear Hush Puppies when they were kids, and most have a funny story to tell about the shoes as well. “But the company is alive and well. It’s a global company that sells products in over 140 countries.” The company would also like to reach out to local communities, and Lugo as well. “If we can help by donating a pair of shoes as a door prize for some event, or maybe by sponsoring a sports team or participating in area events, then we’d like to do that,” he added. “I also hope everyone in the Caro, Vassar and the Mayville area will take a look at the new shoes I’m designing.” But most of all, Lugo hopes his story will inspire other young people to seek out a career doing something they really love. “If it’s computers, or electronics, art, snow or skateboard design, think about what you like to do and what you play with then think about how it works. Maybe you can find your future.”

Alumni Baseball Games

THE “OLDEST TEAM” participating in the Mayville Alumni Baseball Games June 21, 2008 at Lamiman Field included (back row, from left): Shannon Matthews '91, Ken Beebe '89, Rick Eagle '89, Ken Heiser '89, Shane Beach '89, Jeff Yens '91, former coach Curt Henderson; and (front Row): Lance Matthews '86, Eric Frenzel '89, Russ Coutcher '92, Chuck Hoag '82, Tom Walker '88, and Todd Topham '87.

Erwin Craig, who played ball for Mayville and was a 60-year grad in 2008 of the MHS Class of 1938, showed the younger Wildcats how it’s done by tossing the ceremonial first pitch to open the Alumni Baseball Games on June 21, 2008.

The 2nd annual Mayville Alumni Baseball Games were held Saturday, June 21 at Mayville High School’s Lamiman Field. Approximately 45 players were di-vided into four teams and each team played two games. The competitive spirit and pride surfaced in each team, but in the end the score did not matter as every-one was thrilled to get together with old friends and re-live fun times. Nine players with ‘All State’ recognition returned to the field, but center stage went to 1938 graduate Erwin Craig, a teammate of the late Norman Duncan. Erwin threw out a ceremonial 1st pitch and then played four innings at 2nd base. All State pitcher Scott Frenzel could not throw his fastball by Erwin and he stepped to the plate and beat out an infield single. It was a great day for baseball in Mayville and the players are already talking about getting ready for next year. A big “Thank You” goes to organizers Chris Yens, Russ Coutcher, and Eric Frenzel.

The Norman Duncan Memorial Award was donated by George Foster, a good friend and classmate of Norm’s who graduated with him from Mayville High School in 1937. They both attended Michigan State College and Officer’s Training School. Norm gave his life for his country April 12, 1945. The first recipient of this award was given in 1947 to Louis Hamilton.

There have been 66 recipients of the Norman Duncan Memorial Award from 1947 to 2008. Four different years there were two recipients. There have been 47 guys and 19 girls that have received the award. The first girls were Janet Carr and Beverly Crampton in 1976.

The Alumni Asso-ciation could not continue to exist without you. Thank you for your donations and your continued support of the May-ville High School Alumni Association. We would love to hear from you-your thoughts, sug-gestions and comments. Better yet, come and join us at the annual Alumni Banquet on June 6, 2009, we can always use a fresh face, new ideas and the extra hands. Get your tickets now! We’ll be looking for you! Patti Vollweiler '81 President

A Message from the President: The year 2009 is here, and I am sure like me, you look back and wonder, “Where did the time go?” It seems the older I get, the quicker time passes, the faster the years fly by, and the shorter the days are. Yet I find myself trying to fit more into each day. Why is that? Whatever happened to stopping and smelling the roses along the way? The past year has brought many changes to this coun-try and those changes have affected each of us in some way. Some of us are experiencing the toughest economic times we have ever had to endure, while others have seen them before. Everyone has had to buckle down and stretch dollars, quarters, nickels and even pennies as far as they will allow. They say change is coming. I say it can’t arrive quickly enough! In the mean time, take time to remember those close to you-your family, your friends, your neighbors, and espe-cially those classmates you haven’t seen or talked to in

Thanks Paul and Bill for display case support

Editor, the Monitor, After I retired from directing the Mayville Band for 31 years, all of the District and State Festival awards (mostly plaques) were removed from the display case next to the band room by directors who followed me, not by the way, our present director Scott Adkins, who has been very supportive in my attempts to display them once more in the High School. I was asked by Scott to oversee the Band’s performance at last year’s graduation ceremonies as he wanted to see his son graduate from the Vas-sar schools that day. After the cere-monies, I was standing outside the Band room door talking to Paul Tay-lor and Superintendent Bill Hartzell. I mentioned the plaques had been re-moved because of lack of space and thought that it would be nice to have a display case built on the wall across from the band room to hold all of those awards as they have been mold-ing away in my basement for the past number of years. Mr. Hartzell was very interested and gave me permission to look into this project. Paul Taylor, who is an excellent carpenter and builder, said that he could build a display case for all the plaques. I asked him to esti-mate the cost. He said he could do it for about $400. I added an extra $200 just in case. I decided to foot the bill myself rather than ask the community for

donations, because of the great sup-port the Band program has received over the years and appreciation for all of my former Band students. My wife, Connie and I spend most of the winter in Florida now, and Paul said he would build the display case while we were gone. A friend and I then took all of the plaques - in cardboard boxes - from my basement to Paul’s home. When we came back in the spring , I went to the High School and ran into Superintendent Hartzell, who was just leaving. He said, “Come with me, I want to show you some-thing.” We walked down the hall to the Band room and on the wall across from the Band room door was a beau-tiful new display case full of all of our District and State Awards. I was flab-bergasted at its beauty, and to see my life’s work shown in one place (31 years with the Bands). Actually there are also plaques from Mr. David El-dridge’s time before me as they had been removed also. I can never express enough appre-ciation to Paul for his beautiful work, and to Mr. Hartzell, who was the first administrator since I left the band a decade or so ago, who cared enough to allow this project to develop. Scott’s support is also greatly appreci-ated, and I support his fine work with the Mayville Bands as well.
