After Puan Aliza finished her

A-Levels studies in a local

college, she decided to further

her studies in Degree of

Quantity Surveying in the

United Kingdom in 1985. After

she graduated 4 years later,

she returned to her homeland,

Malaysia. As Malaysia was

facing recession at that

particular time, Puan Aliza

stayed back in Malaysia to

work and to sit for the

professional examinations.

She then worked as a

consultant for 16 years.

Puan Aliza recalled that she

learned a lot in UK compared

to working in Malaysia after

working in both countries. One

of the main reasons is that the

method used to construct the

buildings in both countries are

not the same due to the

difference in climate. Puan

Aliza explained, “The walls of

the houses in UK are called the

double brick walls as they help

keep the house warm.”

As a QS, her main task is to

take measurements, prepare

costing, estimate project costs,

control the costs and prepare

payments and final accounts.

Being a professional QS for 25

years, her scope of work

includes all aspects concerning

pre-tender, post-tender and

post contract works. Till date,

she has worked in over 30 local

and overseas projects.

The training and qualification to

become a QS are as follows:

Diploma- To be Assistant QS

and Degree- To be Quantity

Surveyor. The training to

become a QS is when you first

graduate to expose oneself to

the various scope of works in

the construction field. According

to Puan Aliza, the educational

requirements to become a QS is

to take a Quantity Surveying

Course and the necessary skills

are that one must be able to do

measurements and estimations

as well as having knowledge in

regards to building contracts.

W hen asked what was the

biggest challenge of her career

so far, Puan Aliza replied that it

was the Bukit Jalil Stadiums

project from 1995 till 1998. This

is because it was a fast track

project for the 1998

Commonwealth Games. As it

was Miss Aliza’s first time

dealing with stadium

constructions in which she didn’t

have any experience before, it

was indeed challenging.

This is because no two projects are exactly

the same. Therefore, we tend to learn

different things throughout the process of

the different projects we are involved in.

Nowadays, more women are involved in

quantity surveying than men because

women tend to be more patient.

I have to stress that your

weakness should not be the

obstacle to stop yourselves from

reaching your goals in life.

Although I was afraid of heights when I first

started to work in my first project back then

in the United Kingdom, I still persevered till

the end and till today I am able to overcome

the fear.

To me, QS are always in the end of the

construction line and we have to work with

lesser time when compared with architects

or even engineers as the architects and

engineers have taken most of the time in the

beginning of the project before the QS start

their work. Therefore time allocated to QS

is always little.

In addition, the time limit given in Malaysia is

often unrealistic as the projects needed more

time to be completed. Therefore, it can be very

stressful at times when handling projects.

After I am being interviewed by these group of

youngsters, I am happy that they can take the

initiative to learn and understand the experiences

of a professional in the construction field. The role

of a QS or any other personnel in this field may

be stressful, but as you go along the way, you

tend to get accustomed to the stress and

whatever that you think is difficult will be just

something normal.

....................................................................................................................................................................................................

All in all, being a QS is a very

fun and interesting course.
