Nestled amongst the Butler Chain of Lakes in southwest Orlando, Isleworth is a 600-acre community with more

than seven miles of shoreline and a championship golf course. Conceived by Arnold Palmer, designed by Ed

Seay and enhanced by Steve Smyers, the course was built on rolling terrain and features generous, undulating

and fast greens. The 18-hole course was selected as one of the Top 100 courses in the country in rankings by

Travel + Leisure Golf, WSJ/Golfweek and LINKS Magazine. A significant, permanent collection of monumental

sculptures is displayed throughout the community. Elegant estate homes, priced from $2 million to more than

$20 million, are afforded commanding golf to water views. Isleworth has established itself as one of the world’s

most prestigious and secure luxury residential communities.

We would like to thank Craig Johnston for all of his beautiful photography featured in the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational Journal. Without him, this piece would not be possible. Since 2005, he has taken thousands of photos at this tournament.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Craig is considered the first Australian to make a major impact on English football. He made a name for himself playing striker and midfielder for Liverpool from 1981 to 1988; his career spanned more than 11 years.

Craig’s passion for picture taking began at the age of 17 when he purchased his first camera from a second-hand shop in Middlesbrough, England.

“I am naturally a creative person. I always have been. All I wanted was to take photos,” he recalls. “As a boy, instead of writing home to Mum and Dad to explain my environment, it was easier for me to take pictures.”

Today, Craig spends most of his time behind the lens, combining his passion for sports with his talent for photography.

We see in color. Thanks Craig!

Each year, the most elite teams in college golf battle for the most coveted title on their schedules at one of the world’s most renowned venues. Since 2004, Isleworth Golf & Country Club has served as the stage for the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational, while its resident golf professionals look on as spectators for the three-day event.

Six years ago, Tavistock Group teamed up with local organizations to create the best event in collegiate golf by giving players and coaches the feel of a PGA Tour event. Beginning in 2009, Texas Tech University became the host school for the event. “We are honored to welcome our new host school,” said Andy Odenbach, vice president of sports ventures for Tavistock Group. “Our goal in partnering with Texas Tech is to ensure that this is the finest collegiate event in the country.”

The University of Georgia competed at Isleworth in the inaugural ICI and has dominated ever since. In 2008, the Bulldogs continued their winning streak by claiming their fourth Isleworth Collegiate Invitational title in the event’s five-year history. Following a cold and windy day, the Bulldogs cruised to victory firing an 8-over-par (296) to finish the tournament at 3-over-par (867). The University of Alabama finished second with a score of 20-over-par (884), 17 shots behind Georgia. Indiana placed third at 22-over-par (886), two shots ahead of Texas Tech University who took home fourth at 24-over-par (888). Team victories aside, Georgia has snatched up just as many individual titles since the tournament’s inception.

CHAMPIONS GRILLThis plaque was originally placed at the hallway entrance door to the Mens Grill on September 12, 1986 by Arnold D. Palmer. It was anonymously confiscated by a male member on September 8, 1991, the eve of the conversion of this room to a Mixed Grill. On October 19, 1991, along with a crock pot, it was purchased at an Oviedo garage sale for 75 cents by Randy Jeffery. On December 4, 1993 it was returned to its rightful place in celebration of the restoration of this room and the May 11, 1993 purchase of Isleworth by the Lewis family.

It is rumored that one Isleworth member used this staircase as a set of monkey bars and climbed to the top in less than five seconds.

This table is reserved once a month for a men’s game of Texas Hold’em.

The world’s greatest basketball player was challenged by the world’s greatest golfer to a game of H-O-R-S-E on this court.

Every Pittsburgh Steelers game must be shown in its entirety on this TV or else a certain Isleworth member will be very upset.

Four plaques surround the putting green highlighting 21major championships won by Isleworth’s PGA Tour members.

Coach Conrad Ray on competing with Tiger Woods while at Stanford University: “I learned a lot being around Tiger. Hands down, he is the hardest worker that I have ever seen, and he is the strongest mentally on the course. He is a physical and athletic specimen, and these things make him very hard to beat. At Stanford, he was not an average golfer. He was the best then, and he continues to dominate today. He was a great team player and tried to help us all out whenever he could. Tiger was our leader, even though he was only at Stanford for two years. He loved the college environment and all that Stanford had to offer.”

Kentucky head coach Brian Craig reveals a funny story about PGA Tour star and Kentucky native J.B. Holmes: “It was the fall semester of his freshman year, and he was the only freshman traveling with the team. The seniors wanted to try and joke around with the freshman a little bit while we were at the airport. All of the luggage was out of the van when one of the seniors turned to him and said, ‘Hey freshman, take our luggage into the terminal.’ J.B. turned around, looked at him and said, ‘When you beat me, I will.’ And with that, he walked straight into the terminal. Then one of the seniors turned and said, ‘Well he’s right, we can’t beat him.’ So they put their heads down, picked up their luggage and followed him into the terminal.”

Oklahoma State Athletic Director Mike Holder on coaching alumnus Charles Howell III: “Charles was a pleasure to coach – well-mannered, articulate, passionate, dedicated, hard-working and committed to being a great player. He was a coach’s absolute dream. My only regret is that the three years he was here went by so fast; he was gone in the blink of an eye.”

Head coach Larry Penley on the 2009 US Open champion and former Clemson Tiger Lucas Glover: “It was a great day to be a young golfer in the state of South Carolina! The attention drawn to our program after Lucas won the US Open was more recognition than we received following our win at the NCAA Championship in 2003. It brought back memories of his college days and just how special he really is. Lucas was always focused and had a competitive spirit that was second to none. In his mind, the team was always first. He was a great leader for four years, and he made everyone around him better ... including me!”

Walkerthe

CupNearly a decade earlier,

Uihlein and Cauley were shaking hands for the first time at the Doral-Publix Junior Golf Classic in Miami. On a Sunday afternoon in early September at Merion, they were locked in an embrace, celebrating a United States Walker Cup victory in which both played integral parts.

From early companions at scattered junior events across the country, Cauley and Uihlein have blossomed into top forces on the collegiate scene, as has their Walker Cup teammate, Morgan Hoffmann, who plays alongside Uihlein at powerful Oklahoma State. All three players are scheduled to compete at this week’s Isleworth Collegiate Invitational, where each will be a player to watch, as all three began the 2009-10 college season ranked inside the top 10 in the Golfweek preseason rankings.

Hoffmann began the season ranked No. 2 (behind North Carolina State's Matt Hill), Cauley No. 4 and Uihlein No. 6. And all three will be riding the momentum of a memorable Walker Cup week at storied Merion Golf Club.

“I saw (Peter) over there getting pictures taken with the flag,” said Cauley, 19, a sophomore at Alabama. “And I just wanted to be done with my match so I could start celebrating with him.”

Uihlein already had closed out a 3-and-1 singles victory over Great Britain & Ireland’s Stiggy Hodgson with a 30-yard pitch to 3 feet for par to clinch the Walker Cup. Uihlein finished his first Walker Cup with a perfect 4-0 record, a statistic that last fall seemed a mathematical impossibility. He called the Walker Cup "definitely the biggest moment in my golfing career."

The 20-year-old OSU sophomore went on to add, "It's a pretty special two days, (and) spending a lot of time with the team was just awesome. We got along great. This is one of the best moments in my life, so it's pretty special."

Cracking the Cowboys’ lineup last season had been a tough challenge for Uihlein, who entered his freshman year on the heels of a junior career that included two American Junior Golf Association Player of the Year awards. Once Uihlein got to campus in Stillwater,

At last month’s 42nd Walker Cup Match, Peter Uihlein stood on the back edge of Merion Golf Club’s 17th green holding an American flag with both hands, arms raised toward the sky. It was a signal that registered immediately with Bud Cauley, who threw his arms up as soon as he stepped up to green and made a beeline for Uihlein. By Eric Soderstrom

Page 29: ICI 09 Journal

however, he couldn’t figure out OSU’s Karsten Creek Golf Club, where the majority of the Cowboys’ qualifying rounds are played. It got so bad that Oklahoma State coach Mike McGraw sent Uihlein in April to compete in a local NAIA event, which he ended up winning and now pinpoints as the turning point of his year.

“That got me thinking,” Uihlein said. A couple top 10s turned into a runner-up at an NCAA regional and eventually a spot on the Cowboys’ NCAA Championship roster (OSU was ousted by Georgia in the match-play quarterfinals). A summer filled with more top 10s and a run to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur led to Uihlein being named to one of the final two U.S. Walker Cup spots.

On Day 1 at the Walker Cup, Uihlein made an 18-footer for par on No. 18 to send him and Nathan Smith to an emotional 1-up victory over Gavin Dear and Matt Haines and give the U.S. a 3-1 edge. Both sides pointed to the match as a pivotal swing in momentum, as Uihlein and Smith had trailed throughout the match. As Uihlein’s putt dropped, a roar echoed throughout Merion for the first time of the competition.

“That was probably the coolest moment of my life,” Uihlein said. He followed that afternoon with a 2-and-1 singles victory over Tommy Fleetwood that included a 5-iron to 3 feet on No. 17 to close out the match, and came back the next morning (again with Smith) to deliver a 5-and-4 thrashing of Chris Paisley and Dale Whitnell.

Cauley, whose dirty-blond hair spit out from underneath his USA cap similarly to Uihlein’s, also won both of his foursomes matches while teamed with former OSU standout Rickie Fowler. Cauley’s highlight came in the form of a 6-footer “that felt like 40 feet” on No. 18 Sunday morning to beat Hodgson and Niall Kearney, 1 up.

“I think (Bud) was probably the most underrated player in the country in that class (2008),” said McGraw, who signed Uihlein and Hoffmann from the ’08 class. “Nobody overlooked him, but he was definitely the most underrated one.”

Cauley, like Hoffmann a first-team All American last year as a freshman, birdied two of his last three holes to beat Kearney, 2 and 1, in his Saturday singles match and then grinded out a halve with Paisley a day later after the overall outcome already had been decided.

Cauley, who displayed incredible iron play throughout the Walker Cup, completed the match with a record of 3-0-1. Hoffmann also went unbeaten, finishing his three matches at 2-0-1.

“Those last three holes, it was a little hard to concentrate,” said Cauley at Merion, smiling while holding an American flag in one hand and signing autographs with the other.

“This has been the week of my life,” he said. “I will never forget it.”

Uihlein and Hoffmann knew the feeling.

Located in the South Plains of West Texas, Texas Tech carries the distinction of being the largest comprehensive higher education institution in the western two-thirds of Texas, serving a region that is larger than 46 of the nation’s 50 states.

Texas Tech is the only campus in the state that is home to a major university, law school and graduate school. The university also shares a campus with a major health sciences center. Students benefit from this synergy through degree programs that combine the assets of these outstanding institutions and pursue joint degrees in medicine and business, law and public administration, civil engineering and architecture, and a variety of other programs made possible by the combination of colleges and schools on the campus.

In addition, Texas Tech is a leader in providing students opportunities to participate in undergraduate research. Undergraduate students

work side-by-side with renowned faculty researchers, and their work is published in major academic journals and presented at conferences around the world.

The true testament of a university is its graduates. Texas Tech alumni have gone on to become governors of three states, flown space missions, won Olympic gold medals, served as ambassadors to foreign countries, acted on Broadway stages, performed in operas, earned Pulitzer Prizes, became educators at prestigious universities and even performed heart surgery on prominent late-night television hosts. In addition, they lead some of the world’s largest corporations and some of the country’s most successful small firms.

In October 2006, Texas Tech was selected to establish a Phi Beta Kappa chapter on campus, a testament to the university’s academic credentials. Texas Tech is one of only three public

Although enrollment is close to 30,000, Texas Tech still prides itself on one-on-one interaction with top faculty and an environment that stresses student accomplishment above all else.

universities in Texas and one of 276 universities in the nation to host a Phi Beta Kappa chapter, the nation’s oldest and most recognized academic honorary.

The university and its students also provide a valuable service to Lubbock, West Texas and the rest of the state. Texas Tech is a leader in assessing and improving the region’s environmental and healthcare needs and has assisted in developing economic development plans and programs. Texas Tech’s researchers have pioneered studies in plant stress and water conservation, and have developed ways to survive wind-related disasters and methods for creating alternative energy sources.

The enthusiasm on campus is palatable and the energy infectious. There is no better time to be at Texas Tech University. From here, it’s possible.

Texas Tech University is undertaking the most ambitious growth project since its inception in 1923, striving to become Texas’ next national research university.

Education building

The oldest mascot of Texas Tech, the Masked Rider started as a dare in 1936 and was then called the Ghost Rider because no one knew the rider’s identity. Today the Masked Rider, with his or her guns up, leads the team out onto the field for all of the university’s home football games. The Masked Rider is one of the most visible figures at Texas Tech.

Whether on the links or the 50-yard line, everyone loves talking college football in the fall. Each of the 15 teams competing in this year’s tournament revealed their predictions on who will win the National Championship, who they believe the most overrated team is and their favorite game-day tradition. Did they make the right call, or are they just talking trash? You decide.

The most overrated team is Ohio State, along with

the rest of the Big 10. Arizona is our biggest football rival!

If you tailgate with us, you better be able to

play cornhole.

We love to trash talk the South Carolina

Gamecocks.Tennessee shocks the nation this year, as the biggest surprise team!

The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame are

definitely overrated!

We “bark at” (trash talk) every team in the SEC.

Urban Meyer leads the Florida Gators to a repeat

National Championship title.

Our in-conference rivals, Florida and Alabama, are

both overrated!

Dez Bryant wins the Heisman!Tim Tebow wins the

Heisman for the second time in his career.

We tailgate in style with HOT WINGS!

The Texas Longhorns will be the last team standing

at the end of the year!

Colt McCoy and Texas definitely win our

conference!

Doesn’t USC always lose to a Pac-10 team early in the year?

Washington with the upset!
