Orientation Camp This year we started the camp with going to the beach. Despite the weather, which made us more drenched than intended, we had lots of fun, and at the same time we got to know each other better, before the city hunt on the following day. During the city hunt, as attention-seeking as ever, we did silly things in the streets which we would only do when wearing our O-camp t-shirt. We ended our last day with fabulous dramas prepared by freshers. There is no doubt that O-camp is a remarkable annual event and hope everyone enjoyed it as much as we did.

Summer random gatherings A dinner gathering at Gyujin was held in the summer to provide an opportunity for freshers to have fun together. We had lots of interesting conversations about life in IC and around London. It was definitely a great evening meeting all of you!

Variety Show

One of the largest annual events – Variety Show, had gone through the EGM and the elected committees had made their way to the stage.

“We are the producer, co producer and the music director of this year's variety show.

First of all, we'd like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude towards all of the support we have received so far. We are really pleased that many freshers have expressed interest in joining our production.

Deciding on an appropriate theme and plot is always the most difficult process. After endless discussions, our plot this year is inspired by the suicide incident at Queens Tower in Imperial College that happened years ago and the theme is centered around the universality of love across the boundaries of spacetime. We hope our ideas will appeal to our future audiences.

We have a fantastic grew and we believe this experience will nurture great cooperation and friendship amongst us.

Our committee consists of 9 members. As a team, we look forward to bringing you the best variety show we can, and hopefully, it will rank amongst the best in the history of ICCS!”

Imperialogy

Our first charity event with ICPASS this year was held successfully on 25th October. There were 6 teams participated and over 50 students involved. The aim of this event is to encourage people from different subject backgrounds to get together and explore the South Kensington Campus.

The theme this year is Finding Nemo. The 6 teams were given instructions about the location of the checkpoint and had to complete the tasks in limited time in order to reveal the secret message. Twelve checkpoints were set up around the campus, each with tasks that are related to a course at Imperial. For example, the teams were asked to identify the different organs using a team member as a model and explain its function at the Biology checkpoint.

After 5 hours of fun and informative activities, only one team managed to complete the final mission and found the location of Nemo. Well done to the winning team and special thanks to all the Year 2 students that helped out in this event and making Imperialogy memorable.

Joint University Career Fair

On 28th December 2014, the Joint University Career Fair 2014-2015 was successfully held in Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

This was the first career event jointly organized with LSE, KCL and UCL Chinese Society. We have invited various leading firms including United Oversea Bank (UOB), Goldman Sachs, Drawbridge, UBS, etc. to attend this career fair to inform students what requirements and qualities they are looking for and provide valuable insights for students who are interested in a particular industries.

Personally, I am very much drawn to the commitment of UOB to "Grow Our Own" young talents to build a strong and diversified talent bench upon the regional expansion of UOB in Greater China. Through conversations with the representatives from UOB, I was fascinated by the harmonious workplace culture and how strong is the bonding between colleagues in UOB.

We wish to assist our members in terms of future career in the future by organizing more career related events.

The Nottingham Games This year, we have sent out our Basketball, Football and Badminton team to compete with other universities.

Basketball Team

This year’s Chinese Society Basketball team consists of young players who are mostly in year 1 & 2.

After the defeat by last year’s champion, LSE, at the quarterfinals, we trained much harder and dedicated more time in growing as a team aiming to surpass our performance last year at the Nottingham Games. We were allocated into a group with Nottingham, Oxford and Birmingham.

Our first match against Birmingham was a struggle against nervousness, tiredness and sleepiness. The 3 hours coach ride and the 0-4 hours of sleep got the better of us in the opening half. However, we eventually got into our usual forms and with Dixon Li’s aggressiveness, rigging the shooting foul = 1 point rule like a pro, we closed out the game against Birmingham winning by 2 points.

Our second game was against the home team Nottingham, who was among the top 3 teams in Nottingham games for the past few years. We were all prepared for a tough match. They went on a huge run at the beginning when we are adjusting our defense to slow down their outside shooting. Our defense got solid with our players’ hard work at the middle of the game which gave them a lot of pressure. At the end, we lost by 5 points and it gave us a confidence boost as we were able to disrupt the offensive rhythm of one of the top teams.

Third match against Oxford was a close one as we were down three points at around the last 4 minutes of the game. With the two clutch threes by Calvin Chan (Curry #30) and Dixon Li, we were able to take the lead again. Then, Calvin Lo, JJ and Wesley closed out the game in a convincing manner proving that we deserve to be in the quarterfinals. We were

faced against Sheffield at the quarterfinals. Despite being in a deficit most of the game, we stayed determined and gave our best effort till the last minute of the game.

At one point, we went on a run which cut a 20 points deficit to 10. We ended the game losing by 13, but it was a great experience for our team. We were also glad to hear that Sheffield went on to become the Champion of this year’s Nottingham Games. It meant that we had the chance to play against the best and more importantly, we realized that our team is not very far from them. I think most of our team would agree that we could have done much better.

At least I would say so because we are a team of talented players, yet our inconsistencies on both ends of the floor made us vulnerable at times. The only thing that carried us through was our effort and determination throughout these 4 games and I am sure keeping this attitude will bring our team to a higher level in the coming years.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Encouraged by last year‘s success, our badminton team competed in this year’s Nottingham Games with a very high motivation. After many tight matches, the team managed to go through the group stage and captured the 1st Runner-up.

Our first game in the group stage was against Durham, the champion of this year Nottingham games. Durham indeed has a very strong team, especially the man’s single. The games were intensive, we unfortunately lost against them with sets 2:3. Despite having a rough start, we didn’t lose our confidence. We won against UCL and even defeated last year’s champion Warwick and got out from group stage with 2nd place.

The team played against Cambridge at the semi-final. We performed particularly well and defeated them with great combativeness. Entering the final with high team spirit, we met Durham again. We played fearlessly against them in spite of the loss at the group stage, yet the opponents retained their high standard plays and defeated us.

Although the ending was not perfect, the team enjoyed so much and had quite a number of great games especially the matches against Warwick and Durham. Special thanks to all the players and supporters for making this happen.
