Project Background A smoother 1-880 is on its way! The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is taking the first step in the 1-880 Rehabilitation Project. Over 200,000 daily car trips have taken their toll on 1- 880. Commuter traffic and large trucks heading to and from the Port of Oakland, the Oakland Airport, Oracle Arena and the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum continue to stress the roadway. Over the years the roads have taken a beating and now the newest project in Oakland will replace close to 1,000 concrete slabs along the freeway. Once completed, this project will make the freeway a more pleasant ride. The project will fix broken portions of 1-880 between 5th Avenue and High Street in both the northbound and southbound directions. The work will be conducted in two phases and at night to avoid impacting the daily commute. The cost of the first phase will be around $7 million. Phase 2 of the project will pave the concrete slabs between 5th Avenue and High Street with an asphalt mix. Project Milestones The following project milestones are anticipated during the project: • Construction begins in Spring 2011 • Phase I is expected to finish in Fall of 2012 All dates are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Upcoming Lane Closures 1-880 will be reduced to two lanes as crews replace the old concrete with new slabs. There will also be various ramp closures expected throughout the project. Motorists should expect some delays and proceed with caution through the construction area.
