'under the sea' spa

we sent Community Journalist Lakshmi to investigate the spa that uses fish to give you a pedicure! what? “the spa décor is inspired by an underwater theme, all blue. i was treated to a big, comfy sofa in my very own private chamber where the pedicurist washed my feet and then took me into a room where my ‘little friends’ were waiting anxiously. i was getting the doctor fish, fun and natural, treatment that i had heard so much about. doctor fish are tiny fishes that have no teeth and they feed on dead skin. the feeling was ticklish at first but very stimulating and enjoyable. after which i picked the Cupcake princess package for my very deserving feet. From the dip to the scrub followed by the wrap, it was all cupcake.yummy. simultaneously, i was pampered with a very relaxing back and head massage. One thing's for sure: i'll be back."

what on earth?

turn off the lights, please!! no, we don’t mean to put you off to bed early on a saturday night, but 26th march is the day that earth hour will be observed across the globe from 8:30pm to 9:30pm.the wwF campaign aims to bring awareness to a very important issue plagueing planet earth, which is - climate change.turning off the lights makes a drastic dip in power usage – and therefore reduces the amount of greenhouse gases emitted as a direct result of power generation. hence, there can be less environmental pollution, one of the key causes of global climate change.the idea behind the event is to encourage people within the emirate to use their resources wisely in order to sustain a better and longer future. several shopping malls, business centres and landmarks will participate in this event and we urge you, the residents of Jumeirah, to do the same.

enjoy your trip?

are you insured? if not, maybe you ought to get some life (or at least health) insurance if you decide to make a visit to the town Centre mall in Jumeirah.

a lot of restaurants and shopping malls take particular care to ensure the safety of their guests when it comes to the dangers of liquids spilled on the floors. But not here, apparently.

On a recent visit to the centre, we found several parking spaces had small pools of water. this in itself is not an unusual sight especially during summer months when car air-conditioners leak water. But for some reason the surfaces of these car parks are extremely shiny and slippery to walk on.this is a very hazardous situation and can cause serious injury if a person slips or, even worse, falls and hits his/her head.

this really needs sorting, especially in such a high quality mall that is otherwise a pleasure to visit.

welcome to this week’s edition of hypersun Jumeirah. as an extra feature in this issue, we asked you about your plans for celebrating mother's day. the answers are just as moving as you'd expect, and what is especially surprising is how similar the celebrations seem to be from culture to culture. i promise as well that there won't be a dry eye in the house! we also have a feature on how Jumeirah is still the number One choice for so many expats - and keeping well ahead of other keen contenders. meanwhile, you'll find lots more local news and events listed here in this issue of hypersun. if there’s a topic that you want to discuss, please contact me on [email protected] and i’ll make sure to answer you personally.

suit-up?

remember that time when you were young and your mum and dad asked you to never speak to strangers? well, if you didn’t listen then, better listen up now!!

Out loose in the community are two middle aged men pretending to be lost in the outskirts of Jumeirah.

they approach their victim in a car, with the excuse of getting directions either to the airport or another random well-known location. after getting the directions, as a token of their appreciation they offer an expensive item of clothing (usually armani or Versace), claiming that they had worked for a fashion show a week before and were left with a bunch of extras that they didn’t mind parting with. after a few "no thanks" and "i can’t take those", the con man suggests “oh, OK then, just give me a few hundred so i can buy a mobile phone for my daughter back home in italy”. yuk!

Our take on the whole situation is that the clothes are either stolen or complete fakes.

in either case do not trust a word that these con artists say as they are quite smooth operators with a knack of hypnotizing people with their charm and words. a case of ‘caveat emptor’ – the buyer beware!

REsIDEnTIAL

Jumeirah is no.1

Figures now available from the real estate regulatory agency (rera) show that among expats whose first language is english – ie, British, americans, australians, Canadians and some south africans - Jumeirah is the number One preferred place to live in dubai. what is especially impressive is the fact that Jumeirah continues to stay so far ahead of other areas such as mirdif (which is no.2 on the list) and the communities of ‘new dubai’ – springs, Lakes, Greens, meadows, etc. (which come in at no.3). Just goes to show that our standard of living and the host of lifestyle amenities on our doorstep take a lot of beating! the ‘new kids on the block’ can't quite match our old school charm !

ShOUT OUT LOUd jUMEIrAh!every week, we’ll be asking four Jumeirah people - perhaps you see them around the community - for their views on the neighbourhood, their lifestyles , or key current issues. see what you think of their replies.

matovu a. twahareporter 32 - ugandan

i live here in Jumeirah and i like to think that i'm very much part of the community.

what appeals to you most about the area?i love that long stretch of shoreline, with its cool breeze - fantastic! then, i like the shops along Beach road - that line up of clinics look good to me, although i don't normally (in fact, never!) visit any of them.

On the down side, there are many traffic signals along Beach road. it takes you twice the time you would take on some other roads like mankhool. however, i truly understand that it's for the convenience of families and that wonderful tranquility which is characteristic of Jumeirah.

i always love going to the Jumeirah mosque to uplift my moral standards, mercato is a lovely place to go shopping - i think that in many ways it is the hub of the community here. then, the dubai Library offers a good reading environment. i also go the Zoo and sometimes safa

park. the running track is really exceptional.

tell us your story. how does life here continue that story?the first thing i should say is that i come from a society where the concept of 'neighbour' is very important- and it refers to almost the whole community. But here, the concept of neighbour is only the one who is right next to your flat or villa. and even those, you might not know, and might never even meet. Before coming here, i was always excited about the thought that i would meet new people and make new friends when i came to dubai. But i feel quite alone. perhaps it just takes some time to settle in more.

what do you think of the facilities here in Jumeriah - for example, transport?i think we are very well-placed here in Jumeirah. everything is easily accessible - banks, shops, dewa offices, healthcare centres etc. there's nothing much to improve. all the aspects of transport - bus, metro, water taxi - all work pretty well and i use them frequently.

Fatma28, Filipina, paperlane

i live in al Quoz and travel everyday to Jumeirah, for work.

what appeals to you most about the area?i like going to the beach. it’s good fun. i really enjoy it! this is the perfect place to chill out at the end of a long working week - i go there with my husband and we have a really great time together. also, when i was working as a nanny this was a wonderful place for the children.

tell us your story. how does life here continue that story?i‘m a computer graduate from the philippines. eight years ago, in the philippines i saw the longest queue going all the way around the block and i was very curious why people were waiting in line. so, i joined the queue as well, only to discover that people were standing there to get application forms and information about working in dubai. at that moment i thought that dubai must be heaven because i had never seen such a long queue! due to the lack

of opportunities at my agency i signed up for the job of a nanny. i got lucky and came to Jumeirah. i was now a nanny who was responsible for 3 beautiful young children. i borrowed a friend’s sim card and one of her friends called me by mistake - that person is now my husband! in fact we just got married early this year and now we have a full life together here in Jumeirah.

my employer realised that i was good at computers too. she had always been very creative and wanted to start her own company supplying scrapbook material and designs. today, i teach young kids at the paperlane store.

what do you think of the facilities here in Jumeirah – for example, transport?i like the transport facilities here in dubai especially the metro. it is amazing to watch, i haven’t tried it though. i would love to, hopefully soon! all the other types of transport seem to work quite well - although i'm more used to travelling either by car or by bus. the traffic is definitely not as bad as it used to be, either.

John podaras52, Greek, development director at hircon

do you live in Jumeirah or just travel here to work?i live in Jumeirah and i find the place to be absolutely perfect! and i travel to the Greens everyday for work.

what appeals to you most about the area?i love the beaches in Jumeirah. i like the fact that i can always find a place on the extended stretch all to myself away from the crowds and busy car park areas.

tell us your story. how does life here continue that story?i moved to dubai 10 years ago and worked as an associate director for a hospitality consulting firm. initially when we moved here, we stayed in Jumeirah not only because the beach was close by but more importantly because the kids' school and my office were also close by. when my company opened a branch office in abu dhabi, my family and i moved to samha, which is a place in between abu dhabi

and dubai. this allowed me to travel between the 2 locations easily. although i have to say that i missed Jumeirah a lot. i moved back to Jumeirah last year and it felt simply great to be back! there is simply so much to do here - and there's a very laid-back, sophisticated feeling. it's great both at day and by night - and you can walk around safely to your heart's content. i also feel there is a definite sense of community here, which is stronger than elsewhere in dubai.

what do you think of the facilities here in Jumeirah – for example, transport?i use my car to travel to work everyday. i used to travel to my previous office in satwa by the municipality bus but that isn’t feasible for me anymore - as i have to travel to the Greens everyday for work. i would like to see more metro lines running across the city. i think this would make a real difference to peoples' lives and reduce journey times considerably. no doubt once the new line opens later this year, we will notice a very big difference to much of our daily commuting.

arun santhosh35, indian, design engineer

i work as an autocad designer and travel to Jumeirah everyday for work. i must say that i always enjoy coming into this neighbourhood.

what do you like or dislike about the area?i like Jumeirah for the simple fact that you get to see a variety of people who belong to a broad range of nationalities. and how can i possibly forget to mention the beautiful beaches? these really are something very special, i think. i like the fact that the beach is in very close proximity with my work place. Jumeirah’s true essence lies in its beaches. i do enjoy taking long walks on the beach although i will probably enjoy Jumeirah and its beaches even more once i bring my wife and two children to dubai. hopefully in a year or so. Fingers crossed!

the children will love the beach and Jumeirah's shops are also very child-friendly. this is something important, and it's often overlooked when people

talk about the positive aspects of the neighbourhood.

tell us your story. how does life here continue your story?i came to dubai four years ago with a degree in engineering and drawing. initially, i worked at a company near the dubai airport and found it to be quite convenient as it was close to my home. i do like dubai a lot as i can earn a better sum of money here than back home in Kerala. it helps support a better lifestyle for my wife and two beautiful children, age 6 and 2. But i miss my family and friends back home terribly. nonetheless, the money i earn here can help make a considerable difference to their lives - so i believe it's worthwhile

what do you think of the facilities here in Jumeirah – for example, transport?i use the company transport to travel between work and home. i do occasionally use the taxi and bus services too. i would like to use the metro more often but it would mean that i would have to then take a bus to complete the journey.

Blue riband qualitywe’re glad to report that Jumeirah College’s inaugural sports day was a resounding success. held at Gems world academy’s aesthetically pleasing Olympic track and field arena, the day is best summed up as sun, sand and sport. the events began with an impressive performance by the 1500m

runners, running full-on for their respective houses. their exemplary display - in addition to ecstatic cheering - set the pace for the day.

in the end, Fihri crossed the finish line in first place with an outstanding performance with Gibran taking second place. unfortunately, despite their ‘never give up’ spirit, sina and majid took third and fourth.

Lights, camera, action! after 6 months, of rehearsing, learning lines, warming up, dancing, costume fittings and promotional performances – raffles international school west Campus - Junior school made history by performing the first school musical “On the radio” at duCtaC theatre in mall of the emirates.

“On the radio” is a story of

how the radio has brought fun and enjoyment into the lives of people throughout the twentieth century. marvelous mike and Jivin’ Judy took their audience from the 1920s, through the great depression, world war 2, the 1950s, 1960s and then finally the 1980s. the show makes a serious point: that the radio has been - and remains - one of the most important tools for shaping the way that society lives, works and plays.

this was a demanding, challenging production and took a huge amount of careful preparation. But it was also truly worthwhile and rewarding. plus, the talent on stage was just unbelievably fantastic!!

thanks a Billion On march 8th, raffles international school south Campus hosted an environmental Fun run. the goal this year was to raise money to take part in the emirates environmental Group’s million tree Campaign, which supports the united nations’ Billion tree Campaign. the Junior and high school students

had 45 minutes to run as many laps as they could to collect sponsorship for each lap they complete. mattias , a Grade 3 student, ran 9 laps. “we ran in the Fun run to save the earth, we are going to buy trees and plant them outside this school. trees take away all the pollution, and they give us food and oxygen.” eivind, in Grade 4, earned the record for the most laps, 12 times in total. he was so determined that he didn’t take a break for the entire 45 minutes. “i ran 12 laps because i like to run. i also came in first place in the Beach run.” eivind said. “it is important to plant trees in the uae because trees help the air.”

how women are forced to change to be socially accepted which causes them to lose a part of who they are.

Drive along the top of Beach road, going towards mercato

with palm strip on your right, and you’ll see the dubai marine Beach resort & spa. at first glance,

Acouple of months ago an emirati friend of mine told

me that he’d discovered a café in the al Qasba centre in sharjah. he said it was called ‘Gerard’ and that it

it’s more like a small district in its own right – a stylish enclave that resembles a precinct in hawaii more than the GCC. Look again, and the real magic and variety of

was ‘absolutely fantastic’. so, i went there and discovered that the full-fat café-au-lait was one of the best i had ever had (it actually formed a skin on the surface when left to cool

the place comes to life. you see that this is in fact one hotel - 5-star, of course – linked to a series of shops, restaurants, bars and cafes. not forgetting a superb spa that’s actually one of the best-equipped in dubai. it has a slightly colonial feel, with lots of dark polished wood, high-quality brass fixtures, immaculately-uniformed staff and tantalizing beach views.

while the hotel has all the grace and comfort you’d expect, dubai marine (it’s always called by this shorter name) is far better-known for its exceptional collection of venues. you don’t have to be a guest to enjoy them, and the best are well up there with the trendiest hotspots in town. a-listers love serai, for example, the arab fusion nightclub with dazzling azure décor. Clubbers regularly travel from as far afield as abu dhabi to

– how long since anyone’s coffee did that?). although i had often walked past the branch in Jumeirah, in magrudy’s shopping mall, i had actually never been inside. so now was a good time to go there as well. now, this place gets super-busy – and there’s nothing wrong with that, if it’s atmosphere you’re after. the staff here are well geared-up

come here. my personal choice is the italian restaurant, Capanna nouva, brilliantly located across the breakwater and featuring magnificent veiws of the sea and the Open Beach. Or if you like Japanese food, so Cho is the place for you – a spacious and minimalist restaurant and lounge (but don’t come here when you’re on a budget!). there are actually 13 excellent eateries and bars. i heartily recommend the grand tour.
