Barsha cars go greenthe uae is leading the way in the rapid conversion of public sector vehicles to eco-friendly lpg gas – and here in Dubai, al barsha’s municipal vehicles will be among the first to run greener, cleaner and more cost-effectively. the switch-over process was officlally heralded by a launch ceremony at the Dm transportation Department building, rashidiya, on February 22nd, attended by the executive councils responsible for ensuring a smooth and glitch-free transformation of the municipality fleets.

lpg gas conversion is a remarkably quick and simple process, and allows drivers the option of running on the new lpg system or switching back to petrol if preferred.

volunteers to the rescue!you may already know about the work of the Dubai animal rescue Centre, located adjacent to the lulu hypermarket. recently, a group of volunteers moved in for a day and helped keep the animal enclosures beautifully clean and hygienic (the Centre prides itself on high standards, and bringing in the volunteers made sure that regular staff could actually

have a well-deserved day off!). if you haven’t already visited the Centre, it’s a safe haven for horses, birds, tortoises, rodents, felines – and some very exotic creatures you may not expect to find here in the wilds of al barsha. well worth a visit.

First things first. the Dubai Community theatre

and arts Centre (popularly abbreviated to DuCtaC) is located on the 2nd floor of mall of the emirates. it incorporates a diverse range of facilities, including two theatres (one is

a state-of-the-art, 543-seat gala venue, the other a fully equipped studio theatre); a superb visual arts gallery; three dance/rehearsal studios; 18 arts studios, workshops and classrooms (including pottery facilities); and an informal,

well-specced café. DuCtaC is a non-profit institution, with no public sector funding, depending instead on corporate sponsorship and private philanthropy. millie J. tsai has been general manager since september 2009, but was previously a team member at

DuCtaC, working back office roles and programming, since the organization started in 2006. she’s credited with bringing both quality and entrepreneurial spirit to the arts portfolio, and won’t hesitate to use her extensive network to recruit the best shows and talent from as afar afield as shanghai, berlin and new york.

“you have to remember”, says millie, “that the heart of DuCtaC is the range of courses we have to offer. these attract people from all walks of life, and allow them to reach a very high level in their chosen areas of interest. typically, people have tended to hear about these courses by word of mouth, and many of them have an excellent level of attendance – especially after 3pm, through to late at night. we can teach a very wide range of arts. take dance, for example, from salsa to ballet, to kathak – all are very popular and our rehearsal and performance facilities are exceptional. or perhaps you want to learn pottery or ceramic arts. again, we have all the facilities in place to do this. these courses really integrate us with the community and they play an important role in introducing youngsters to the world of the arts. i believe this is a crucial, because a child who is awakened to the world of the arts will grow and develop this interest forever. this is a great way to build a passion for the arts, and we see that many of the people who come here for courses have this amazing passion. in fact, i believe that the courses we run are such an important part of our Centre that one of my key goals is to

develop their popularity to the point where the facilities are fully utilized throughout the day.

“we’re here to foster these links with the community; i’d like to see as diverse a demographic taking part as possible. because who knows, we may discover someone who is a genius in a particular field right here in the local community. we don’t want to run the risk of missing them.”

An outstanding programmein terms of the performance

and exhibition side of DuCtaC, the Centre is home to some totally ground-breaking events and shows, many of which can be described as truly world-class. some are also full of surprises. For example, the recent photographic exhibition ‘photography through the eyes of saudi arabian women’ attracted a considerable volume of visitors, with brilliant images that stunned and amazed the enormously mixed range of viewers.

“in this respect’, says millie, “i think it’s true that we’ve played a part in evolving tastes in the region, and haven’t settled for

shows that are simply cosy or guaranteed to be popular. i’ve traveled widely, from shanghai, hong Kong and to the famous edinburgh Fringe Festival, bringing in performers of real quality who may be highly

innovative and bring something unusual. at the same time, i try to build a bridge between their art and the expectations of the audience – and i want everyone to feel extremely welcome here, because there really is something

for every taste.“as an example, we recently

put on a real ‘blockbuster’ event, called the three phantoms, featuring three tenors who had played leading roles in the great international show, the phantom of the opera. but we also have incredible experimental shows like ‘brainiac live!’, or operas from amazing puppet theatre groups. i should also mention the mind alternative arts festival, which can be a great breeding ground for talent. mind is at the forefront of supporting - and providing a platform for - performers out there in the community. it encompasses photography, sculpture, video installation, and we throw open all our facilities for the events programme. we’re passionate about supporting the artistic talent in Dubai and this is a great way of introducing that work to the public.“if there is one message i want to put across, it’s this: come here and see what we have to offer.”

Performance Photos:Sarah Martin

"you have to remember that the heart of DuCtaC is the range of courses we have to offer. these are focused on the Community and attract people from all walks of life."

andrea Broccalook now before you miss him!! young and very talented fashion designer andrea brocca is light years ahead of his time.

the year 10 student from Jumeirah College has achieved a lot for his age (14 years), not just locally but internationally too. andrea came in 3rd place while competing against other designers much older than himself for the coveted and prestigeous title of Fashion

illustrator 2010. andrea has also had the glorious opportunity of interning with high fashion uK brand ‘ temperly london’ during the summer of 2010 and is presently looking forward to a sequel experience with the fashion house this summer, returning to london.

First time around, andrea designed a dress that was named after him and called ‘the anDrea Dress’. the dress hit stores in December last year and has sold 90 pieces already.

all we can say is wow! this budding talent is definitely someone to watch out for.

bear in mind that andrea is younger than yves saint laurent when he apprenticed with pierre Cardin and younger still than hubert givenchy when he apprenticed with Charles worth. not to mention Dior, who didn't start until he was age 16. how long until the paris catwalk?

squealing with Joy the british orchard nursery on street 6b, recently organized a fun-filled field trip to the Dubai Dolphinarium. anticipation and excitement were the emotions of the hour. the dolphins and seals put up a fantastic show, which was a valuable and enjoyable experience for the children. the aquatic animals charmed their way into the

hearts of the children by performing somersaults and jumping through hoops. the kids just couldn’t get enough and were left squealing with joy. the trip was a treat for the kids and the nursery is still echoing with stories from the Creek park.

has your school recently arranged a similar trip? or maybe an excursion to the mountains? or a fantastic and picturesque desert safari, perhaps? if so, we’d like to hear – and if you have some good photography of the occasion, it will be our pleasure to reproduce that, too. it’s green month at JcJumeirah College has dedicated the month to educating children about the whole raft of important environmental issues. the occasion deals with everything from animal conservation to recycling to a sponsored ‘green walk’ for the world wide earth hour. For JC’s pupils, the month involves a series of ‘signpost’ days –

with competitions between houses and pupils to see how successfully the ‘go green’ message really got across! For example, there’s an inter-house recycling challenge, and – very innovative, this one – a ‘lights off’ day, when the idea is ensure minimal use of iwbs and photocopiers.

a green inter-house fashion show – involving all houses – on 1st march looks set to grab the headlines, and will feature a wide variety of recycled and eco-friendly fashion items. throughout the month, the school is on 'green alert' proactively encouraging kids and parents to conserve energy, whether at home or in the car.

N estled and neatly tucked behind the ramada

Chelsea hotel-al barsha is the extraordinary pizza house – Verona pizzeria. the restaurant is a charming addition to the al-barsha horizon. it is essentially a food joint where take-out/home delivery seem to be the more prominent means of business rather than in-house dining. the pizzeria décor is casual, yet welcoming with only three tables to seat customers. the restaurant chef stands up-front, behind the counter of the open kitchen ready to greet incoming orders with a smile.

the informal and interactive setting is a welcomed change from the pretentious and commercial

chains one often comes across.quite literally after being seated,

the order was placed directly with the chef.

From the menu, which had over 35 varieties of pizza, a few salads and kebab dishes to choose from, we ordered the vegetarian pizza and the chicken kebab bread.

while waiting for our order to arrive, we were treated to a complementary bowl of somewhat incongrous (but delicious!) shredded cabbage that was infused with a blend of vinegar and swedish spices.

the vegetarian pizza was served with a beautiful garlic-mayo dressing that gave the dish a punch it much deserved. the warm

crust that was baked to a thin crisp was layered-on by a perfect, not-overdone bed of cheese and veggies.

in plain words, the pizza was light and the ultimate comfort food

to be indulged without having to feel guilty.

unlike the pizza, the chicken kebab bread offered a richer and fuller experience. garnished with fresh tomatoes, onion and cucumber, the chicken filling was stuffed into a warm pita-pocket fresh n' hot from the oven.

the meal was both fulfilling and enjoyable for just aeD 50. the restaurant has some very economic lunch hour specials from 11am until 3pm.

one thing to note: this is a simple, unadorned environment: it won't give you a glamorous setting, but it will deliver exactly what it promises, food-wise..

there's free delivery to places in and around al-barsha. but don't worry if you are not close enough and live miles away in bur-Dubai or elsewhere cause you too can enjoy a slice of the swedish Donar pizza for a modest delivery charge of aeD 10. location: al barsha 1,barsha horizon building, shop 3,behind ramada Chelsea hotel
