Huxford Symphony Orchestra Viola Auditions All auditions must be recorded as audio files (NO video) and emailed to Dr. Adams ([email protected]) by 11:59 pm CDT, Monday, August 17, 2020 All Audition Files must include: • 2-3 minutes from a current solo piece* • Mozart, Symphony No. 35, movement 1, m. 41 – m. 66 o Goal Tempo: Half note = 80 o Focus especially on rhythm, articulation, octave intonation • Berlioz, Roman Carnival Overture, pickup to 3 measures after reh. 1 – 8 measures after reh. 3 o Goal Tempo: quarter note = 60 o Focus on beauty of tone, vibrato, phrasing, dynamic shapes If you want to be considered for a leadership position in the viola section, please also prepare: • Mendelssohn, Scherzo from Midsummer Night’s Dream, Letter C – Letter D o Goal Tempo: dotted quarter (full measure) = 80 o Focus on controlled, compact, even bow stroke and stable rhythm within pp *If you do not have a current solo piece, email me and I will assign you something for the audition Ways to Approach • Listen to recordings of the excerpted pieces with your part • Practice under tempo with the ‘goal tempos’ listed above as just that: a goal to gradually work up to! • Audio file should be recorded in one, continuous take (solo piece followed by orchestra excerpts). It is ok to have brief pauses between each piece/excerpt, but try to keep the entire file within 4-7 minutes in length. • Keep in mind that audio files sometimes take time to upload and send via email.
