Hurstbourne Highlights

As parents we are given the incredible responsibility to raise the next generation. We are given the re-sponsibility to raise our children accord-

ing to God’s principles and in-struction. God instructs us to train up our children in righteousness, and we are often the means he uses to protect our children from the foolishness that resides in their hearts. In 1 Samuel we see the life of Eli and his wicked sons. In chapter 3 it says that Eli “did not restrain them.” He knew their sins and what they were doing wrong, yet he failed to take firm action and restrain them from doing wrong. Most of us can identify with that in some way. As parents we often find it hard to be as strong as we should be and address the sin in our children’s lives. We simply

overlook it and hope they will change. Or when we do address it we do so in the wrong way; we do it to protect our “good” name or reputation instead of pointing them to God. We are accountable to honor the Lord by faithfully training our children and raising them in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. We must help our children understand that they are respon-sible for their decisions. Each de-cision has results and conse-quences. We are to guide them and help them make wise deci-sions, not foolish ones. Proverbs encourages the reader to choose wisdom over folly (foolishness). We as parents must do the same. A vital part of our task is to help our children see the ruin of fool-ishness and the blessings of wis-dom.

That They May Know

Vince Scarbrough

Hey Hurstbourne! As we approach Thanks-giving and Christmas, I wanted to remind you of a couple of oppor-tunities for service

and of a couple of special events to be aware of. First, keep the “Love for LaGonave” Christmas shoe drive in the forefront of your mind. Don’t forget to pick up an orange collection card from church and to purchase shoes according to the instructions. Let’s do all we can do meet our goal of 500 pairs of shoes! We’re asking families to come to our Thanksgiving dinner next Sunday night, with shoes in hand! Second, as pastor Vince an-nounced yesterday morning, we need at least a couple of more individuals to serve on our special events committee. We are a little bit short-staffed going into the Thanksgiving dinner. Sometimes

we take for granted our great events at HBC and don’t see all of the work that goes into getting them together. I encourage you give consideration to joining this workforce. Third, make sure you get signed up for the Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday evening, No-vember 23rd, if you haven’t done so yet. This would also be the per-fect opportunity to invite a guest to our church. Contact the church office if you need to make reser-vations. Finally, mark your calendar for “Advance: The Mission.” We are planning a corporate evening of celebration and commissioning on Sunday night, December 7th. We will report on and celebrate all the many ways that HBC mem-bers have been on mission in 2014 and will have a time of chal-lenge and commissioning for 2015.

Snow! Before Thanks-giving, really? I can’t believe it! Well, it is also hard to believe it is almost time for Christmas pro-

grams again. Our children will be sharing some Christmas music with the congregation on Sunday morn-ing, December 7, in our worship service. They will be having a re-hearsal on Saturday, December 6 from 10 a.m. to 12 Noon in the worship center. The rehearsal schedule for the remaining Sun-days in November is as follows: Sunday, November 23 at 5 p.m. due to the Thanksgiving Meal at 6 p.m. We will be rehearsing on Sun-day, November 30 (This is the Sun-day after Thanksgiving) at the nor-mal time (6 p.m.). The children can wear Sunday morning attire for singing on Sunday morning, De-cember 7. Parents, if you have any further questions, please contact me at 426-2444 or [email protected]. The Decorating Committee will be getting Christmas Decorations

out and placed in the worship cen-ter and around the church begin-ning next Sunday afternoon (November 23). I am sure they would appreciate anyone that is willing to help with this major pro-ject. Please let Debi Burger (chair) or me know if you are willing and able to help. The Worship Choir and Orches-tra will present “Christmas Makes Everything New” on Sunday morn-ing, December 14 during the wor-ship service. It is a great program of traditional Christmas carols (you can sing along) and moving new songs to celebrate our Savior’s birth. I know you won’t want to miss this worship experience. Our Christmas Eve service is at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, December 24. Join us as we share in the Lord’s Supper together, hear the music and story of Christmas. Many peo-ple from our community join us for this service. A great opportunity to make connections with new peo-ple.

Chris’ Notes

Chris Kihn

We will not hide them from their de-scendants; we will tell the next genera-tion the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his

power, and the wonders he has done. (Psalm 78:4 NIV) As I write this article, my office is humming with the sounds of our student praise team warming up. They are downstairs in the stu-dent area (which they affection-ately call the Pit), and the back of my office happens to be right over the stage in the main room. So while they practice for their Open House, jamming to Blessed be Your Name, my floor vibrates with each beat. And I love it. I love it not just because I en-joy the song (which I do). I love it not just because I enjoy upbeat

worship (which I do). I love it be-cause I’m hearing the sounds of another generation who is excited to praise the eternal God. And I love it because it reminds me that the gospel of Jesus Christ contin-ues to capture the hearts of those growing up today, almost two thousand years after Jesus suffered for us. We can get discouraged about the prospects of the gospel in to-day’s age. It’s easy to focus on the many things that distract people from the gospel or make them resistant to God or the church. But we must remember that the message about Jesus never be-comes outdated. As we share about Jesus, and strive to help others see him clearly, then some will see, and some will respond. We just need to be obedient to share.
