HALSEY

“HURRICANE”

TREATMENT SHEETSIAN HOLLAND

CONCEPT

'Hurricane' tells us of independence, a 'wild youth' idea in which nothing is actually fixed. This will be broadcast through a series of images and videos that will be projected onto my actor that relate to the themes of the song. These will change, to regress that the world is changing at all times. Sian HollandHartlepool Sixth Form CollegeBlakelock Road, Hartlepool, TS25 [email protected]

Projecting these images onto my actor will show that all of these things are within her: whether as a memory, a thought, a feeling. New York, the weather, stars, television static. None of these are set in their place and are at a constant state of change. They don't belong in a certain position. "Don't belong to no city, don't belong to no man".

Hurricanes are violent. They crash into our lives and will leave a short time after, usually not without destroying something first. Destruction is a major part of the song as it's linked with the descriptions of an unattached relationship and intoxicants. "A little liquor on my lips". "You tripped on LSD". Being with another puts you in a state of demolition. The world hands us a weapon and allows us to destroy everything. "There's a storm you're starting now". Suggested is that it's easier to be alone, to roam the world without being connected to another person. "I'm a wanderess".

Youth shines through this song if we can assume a person can only have this type of dissociation at a young age when the world is their playground. A party will be shown to exemplify the adolescence and the naivety that comes with it. My actor will be young and vivacious to reflect the song perfectly. The 'star image' (ref. Andrew Goodwin) will be used to present this person to the audience.

NARRATIVE'Hurricane' will not show a chronological story. We join the singer in the stage of her life where she's realised she doesn't have to belong anywhere and to anyone. Sovereignty creeps in. Major themes of youth and independence are played on as we join a group of young people at a Halloween party. Wandering is brought back into the equation. Though she's alone she is not lonely, much like the dead of the Halloween night myths. There's no shame in autonomy as everyone at the party enjoys themselves. Parts will be in slow motion to almost preserve the happiness.

We can infer at her life before this, however. What happened for her to get to this stage of being her own person? Which events made her realise it's perfectly fine to not let anyone have control over you? The destabilisation of her life is mirrored with that of a set narrative.

We will see natural things corrupted; a metaphor for the world and how it can corrupt people, too. We will see a girl alone as her thoughts and memories are broadcast upon her. This all adds to the abstract narrative of ‘Hurricane’.

CHANGE is the key theme of ‘Hurricane’ music video.

PERFORMANCE + PROJECTIONProjection will be used to display the thoughts and memories of the singer. She sings of Brooklyn and rain. To enhance the lyrics and their meanings, I aim to use images of television static to show instability. I want to use time lapses to show change also. The actor will lip sync, as though to tell her story to those who listen. A mouthpiece for all of those who wonder if they can be okay on their own, almost preaching that everything it fine. This is unlike any other Halsey video but as the theme, nothing can stay the same for long.

NATURE SHOTSNature is unpredictable. I want to bring in natural elements into play and distort them in editing to enhance the audio. This brings across many ideas including how we can destroy nature as well as other people and ourselves. Destruction of human nature will play a part in this video and will feature as the topical issue. Elements such as the sea and trees will be used for this.

LOCATIONSHouse parties are exactly that: at home. The Halloween party element of the video will be filmed in a house whilst a party is happening to show the natural behaviour of young people. Nature elements will of course be filmed where the particular element is. Ideas for this are Seaton Carew Beach and Rossmere Park. Performance and Projection will take place in the sixth form studio.

MISE-EN-SCENEFilters will be used to make the video look more aesthetically pleasing. Predominantly, this will fade the colours of the original shots. This gives more meaning to 'come and fade me'. It could bring a nostalgic feeling to the video as a whole. Halloween decor will be featured in that section, and the costume for all involved in that section of the video will clearly be 'fancy dress'. My actor will be wearing black and white: this is bold and makes a statement. It allows her to stand out against the colours of the rest of the video strongly.

CAMERA AND EDITINGViewing both the existing Hurricane music video and from previous shot count tasks, I have a general idea of how many shots I will need for my entire video. Medium, long, and close up shots were used the most generally - perhaps I should stick to this idea. However, a range were used throughout the videos I've studied so from this and my own aims, I know to try and use a variety of different shots. I would like to try to use a pan, a tilt, and a tracking shot within my video. These will convey different themes and ideas depending on the subject. Close up shots will be used for lip syncing - this gets across the 'star image'. I want to try and use different types of focusing such as shallow and deep. I would also like to try and get thought beats into this video.
