Concept

For the concept of my video, I want to base it around the idea of love and heartbreak – a common convention within the pop rock genre. Therefor I intend on beginning my music video with a band performance shot. This is to introduce the band to the audience so that I can emphasise that the main protagonist in the narrative is also the vocalist within the band. This helps me to deepen the narrative and create a storyline within the narrative and a slight storyline within the performance, therefore allowing me to link the two at a later stage within the video. I intend on having a young heterosexual couple in love for the original equilibrium of the narrative. The disruption however, causes the two lovers to break up and go their separate ways in life. Although this happens, I intend on portraying to the audience that the vocalist/protagonist still hold strong feelings of love towards the female that he used to share a relationship with. I intend on doing this using many different camera shots and a variety of mise-en-scene, such as a point of view shot from the male’s perspective in which he is looking at a ring in his palm. I have decided this as a ring would be a clear indicator for love due to its stereotypical nature. At this point the protagonist decides that he does not wish to give up on this girl that he is in love with, thus he feels inspired to stop in the middle of his performance to run to said girl and confess exactly how he is feeling towards her. This then leads to a new equilibrium, which is similar to the first however, in this new equilibrium, both the male and female protagonists are seen at the previous performance.

Narrative and Performance

As I mentioned before within my concept, my narrative will consist of a male and female protagonist breaking up and then falling back into love with one another. The performance however will be made up of two important performance sections, the performance and he narrative. For the performance section of the video I intend on using band members to perform the song, as they will be playing the song correctly, therefore allowing the performance segment to be truly effective throughout the whole music video. However, for the narrative segment I intend on employing an actress to portray the female protagonist within the music video as they do not need to be musically talented, however, it is important that during the video they portray a realistic act towards the idea of being in love with the male protagonist. The male protagonist however, will be the lead vocalist. I have decided on this idea, as I believe that it would be very effective to have to have him as the male protagonist within my music video. This also allows me to link the performance segment and narrative segment into one large segment at any point during the course of my music video. Finally I believe that my target audience would find it more appealing to use the vocalist from the band they are listening to as the main male protagonist.

Love & Marriage

As I mentioned before, my music video will be heavily based around the theme of love. I have chosen this theme, as it is a common convention with the pop rock music genre. I also think that this theme fits perfectly with the title of the song that I have chosen for my music video. I have also decided to include marriage into this theme, as I want to include subtle hints toward marriage, however I wish to avoid using the theme as I believe that it would be too obvious to the whole video.

Red Herring

Within my music video I intend to add a red herring to try and create a sense of enigma within the video. To do this I plan on having my video set through the imagination of the protagonist after seeing a girl and instantly falling in love with her. Therefore I will have him imagining many different romantic scenarios that include this girl, as if they were happening at the current moment in time. When the visuals are combined with the lyrics the audience would be likely to think that it is just a typical love story about two characters that fall in love, however I intend to have a cyclic narrative so that it reveals a the twist that the whole video was set within the imagination. I intend to do this by having the main protagonist meeting the girl near the start and then this shot being recreated and continued near the end of the video.

Camera and Editing

I intend on sticking to the conventions of my chosen genre and challenging the original conventions of a traditional music video and avoid much camera movement, as this seems to be a common trademark found within the music genre that I have chosen to produce. Instead, most of my shots will be focused on composition and depth of field to try and achieve the effectiveness that I am aiming for. I intend on having this video set in a romantic way, thus I will try to focus on including shallow focus shots and different editing techniques to achieve a romantic feel to the final product. I will achieve this by experimenting in my editing to try and blur certain parts of the video and adjust the warmth of the lighting.

Lighting

For my lighting I intend to set up a dim setting for a lot of my narrative, likely only lighted by candles and natural lighting, this is due to the romantic nature. I wish to use candles as it seems like the best way to get the warm glow that I am looking for in my music video, rather than recreating this using studio lighting, and then if needs be, I would use Final Cut Pro X to edit the lighting to make it darker if necessary.

Mise en Scene

For my mise en scene I intend to use many different romantic scenarios, such as a romantic meal or walk. I plan on having most of my background in a shallow focus to make the foreground stand out in a more crisp fashion. For the two protagonists I intend to mainly have them dressed in casual clothing for the narrative and the possibility of formal clothing to set the scene for some scenarios. I intend for the male protagonist to have a specific style that is similar

to Pat Monohan from Train, with a T-Shirt and shirt combination, shirt, or leather jacket.
