Mrs. Karlin’s Trip to Hungary
December 2009
From www.maps.com
We flew from Wichita to Houston to Frankfurt, Germany to Budapest, Hungary.
Our son, Chris, and Meredith by her school.
Waiting for the bus from Meredith’s small town, Diods, into the city (Budapest)
Riding on the tram in the city
“Chestnuts roasting on an open fire”—at the Christmas Market.
Tourists, including Mr. Karlin love to reenact the statues!!
Meredith and Chris reenact a statue pose.
An older building right next door to….
…a building with more modern architecture.
Our luggage was lost en route. It was delivered on Christmas morning so that was a great present in addition to these!!
Christmas Dinner—ham, mashed potatoes, peas and biscuits
Guess what this is? See a different kind on the next slide.
“Shelf” milk—it is found on the shelf, does not need refrigeration until you open it. It is pasteurized by Ultra High Temperature. Aseptic packaging assures that it is free of bacteria and hermetically seals it (air tight) thus eliminating the bacteria, air and light which will cause milk to sour.
All the house are fenced and the gates are locked. I was fascinated by the different styles of fencing (as you can see by the next few slides).
This is the house Meredith lives in (taken earlier in the year since you see the green vines). Notice the doorbell on the outside of the fence.
Many of the streets are very narrow.
Budapest Opera House where we saw and heard the Nutcracker Ballet. The orchestra, dancing and sets were AWESOME! Two harps in the orchestra.
The Opera House is quite ornate.
The Nutcracker performers
Parliament Building—Meredith, Chris, Barb and John May (M’s fiancé)
Hungarians love statues!!
More statues on a museum.
Even more statues on the same museum.
We walked across the Danube River on the Chain Bridge.
We rode the Funicular up the hill to the Buda side of the Danube. Buda and Pest were 2 separate cities until they united in 1873.
Looking toward the Pest side from the top of the hill after the funicular ride.
The Danube River and the Parliament Building
Another view from Buda Castle Hill
And another.
The Danube River and Chain Bridge at night. It gets dark about 4:30 p.m.!!
Reflections in the Danube.
Guess what Meredith teaches?
The school library serves the K-12 students.
Papier mache artwork by Meredith’s students.
Caldecott Medal winner poster—just like the one at Heusner!
English speaking school so I found books just like Heusner has.
Covered Market
The covered market is 2 stories. Produce on the first floor; prepared food and trinkets/souveniers on the second floor.
You can get your whole hog here.
St. Stephen’s Basilica (church)
St. Stephen’s Basilica. We went inside but it was dark and the pictures were poor.
St. Stephen’s Basilica.
Guess what restaurant this is? Give up—clue on next slide.
Still don’t know? See next slide.
This is one of the fanciest McDonald’s in the world.
Campona Mall
Guess why I took this picture?
John, Meredith, Myself and Chris
Big plane that took us from Frankfurt, Germany to Houston (12 hours)
