“Agony” Competes In ValleyEnd-Of-Year Contest Taft Camera Club’s Tyrone Maddox’s “Agony” image of an injured motor-cycle rider recently received the only high score in the Photo-Journalism category at a monthly competition of the San Joaquin Valley Camera Club Council. The SJVCCC consists of six camera clubs and holds six photo competitions each year culminating with the best-of-the-best entering an annual End-of-Year competition. “Agony” is expected to be one of the top contenders in the E-O-Y Photo-Journalism category. “Agony” also received a 5th place award at this year’s Kern County Fair.Photo-Journalism scoring rules require that emphasis be given to the story-telling nature of the photo with less emphasis on background or other technical issues. In assigning the top score to “Agony” the judge’s critical com-ment was that “One did not have to see the subject’s face to see the agony of the moment,” Other Taft Camera Club members have also entered images in different cat-egories of the SJVCCC competition to be held in Fresno on December 12th on the basis of also having received high scores in both digital and print competi-tions during the course of the year. Winning Taft images will be shown at its December 14th meeting held at 7:00 pm at the Chevron Valley Community Room on West Kern St.

Landscaping the Old Hospital Helicopter Landing Area

Workmen were out this week installing new sprinkler landscaping in the triangle grass area where the old hospital helicopter landing pad is located. The Independent has been asking West Side Health Care District people and Hall Ambulance representatives when they might recertify the helicopter landing pad which would allow for emergency helicopter service back on the Westside. While no answer has been forthcoming, we hope that both agencies will consider bringing back the helicopters so residents might have a better chance for quick medical treatment in an emergency over in Bakersfield. It would also be reassuring to residents know that that kind of emergency transportation service is available. We’ll keep you posted and let you know if any progress is made on restoring the air ambulance service back to Taft. Let us know what you think.

New Mayor Appointed, 3 Councilmembers Sworn InBy Kent Miller

Taft City Council at its Tuesday night meeting welcomed back two members for their third straight four-year terms and one new/old member who corralled the third seat in November’s general election. Councilmembers Paul Linder and Randy Miller finished one-two in the election, to retain their seats. Ron Waldrop came in third in the voting, to replace incumbent Cliff Thompson, a veteran of two terms as a councilmember. Waldrop previously served on the Taft City Council, from 1998 to 2002, then decided not to seek reelection in 2002. He will vacate his position on the city’s Planning Commission.

After Linder, Miller and Waldrop were sworn-in, the council turned to selecting a new mayor and mayor pro tem. With City Clerk Louise Hudgens wielding the gavel, outgoing Mayor Dave Noerr nominated Miller for the post and Council-member Craig Noble nominated Waldrop. All five members voted for Miller. As his first official duty, Mayor Miller conducted the selection of mayor pro tem. Noerr nominated Linder and he collected all five votes. Later in the meeting, the council continued until the Dec. 21 meeting the naming of councilmembers to various city commit-tees, appointing a delegate to the League of California Cities, and selecting a member and alternate to Kern Council of Govern-ments.

Some discussion The council discussed a proposal by Jane McCabe, owner of the End of Times Gallery on Center Street for a 12-foot by 25-foot mural on the west side of the Angel Flooring Co. building at Center and Fifth streets. The mural, based on a 1920s’ photo, would show the Taft of about 1925 next to the real Taft of 2010. McCabe put a price tag of about $10,000 on the project but budget concerns squelched any council support at this time. Also drawing discussion was a chamber request to waive fees for permits and licensing, and to utilize city properties for special events. Since he is in the final days of being a member of the chamber’s board of directors, Mayor Miller left the room during the discussion and voting on this item. The council approved two resolutions concerning use of city properties and the waiving of fees for the usage – but for public events only.

Quick workThe council quickly:

* Granted approval of a street closure to allow for the filming of a Dr Pepper commercial;* Concurred with the Finance Committee’s recommendation to adopt the city investment policy with no changes;* Okayed submission of the 2011 Arts Council of Kern “Arts in the Community” grant application;* Approved the Taft Chamber of Commerce’s portion of the tran-sient occupancy tax for the July-September quarter;* Supported continuing to fund the part-time position of planning information systems analyst into 2011, not to exceed 1,000 hours;* Concurred with the staff recommendation to continue with the ClimateSmart program.ClimateSmart is a voluntary option from Pacific Gas & Electric Co. Allowing governments and residents to take action against climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from energy use, said Teresa Binkley, city finance director.Since joining the program on July 15, 2008, the city has paid just over $6,300 toward the program and has received grants of $4,500 and $1,000 from PG&E.

This Nativity Scene was erected in a church yard. During the night folks came across this scene. An abandoned dog was looking for a comfortable, protected place to sleep. He picked the baby Jesus as his comfort. No one had the heart to send him away so he was there all night. We should all have the good sense of this dog and curl up in Jesus’ lap from time to time. This is too sweet not to share. No one mentioned that the dog breed is a “shepherd!”

Wanted: Head Coach for Taft TigersharksBy Jessica G. Miller

The Taft Tigersharks Swim Club is hiring. The infamous aquatic team for Westside youngsters is looking for a Head Coach for the 2011 swimming season. “We would rather hire someone with experience from the area,” said Adrienne Cloud, Secretary for the Tigersharks. “We want to keep it local.” The swim club is looking for a coach who has the ability to train children from different age groups and has knowledge in up to date practices in swimming coaching, stroke mechanics and techniques as well as an AA/AS or equivalent in a related field, two years of experi-ence or training in aquatic sports or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The conditioning part of the season will begin on January 17 and they hope to find a coach by then. “We want to give our team what they deserve,” Cloud said. “We want someone who is knowledge-able to train our children. If we don’t find one by [ January 17] we’ll handle it but once the competing season start, it will be imperative that we find a coach. We’d rather find one now, though.” The Winter Swim or conditioning season as it’s called is for kids who have been on a swim team before or have swimming experience. The cost for the season per child will be $100, however, they are offering two incentives for parents. Those who pay the full price up front get a $20 discount. They are also offering the option to make two $50 payments. For those interested in the head coaching position or know some-one who would be, resumes can be sent to [email protected].

Season for Sharing in Fire Safety The winter season brings the highest number of home fires than any other time of year. Winter residential building fires result in an estimated average of approximately 945 deaths, 3,825 injuries, and $1,708,000,000 in property loss each year .According to the United States Fire Administration (USFA), there are simple life-saving steps you can take to ensure a safe and happy holiday. By following some of the outlined precautionary tips, individuals can greatly reduce their chances of becoming a holiday fire casualty. Preventing Christmas Tree Fires • Christmas Tree Fire Hazards Movie segments demonstrating how fast a live Christmas tree can become fully engulfed in flames. Special fire safety precautions need to be taken when keeping a live tree in the house. A burning tree can rapidly fill a room with fire and deadly gases. • Selecting a Tree for the Holiday Needles on fresh trees should be green and hard to pull back from the branches, and the needle should not break if the tree has been freshly cut. The trunk should be sticky to the touch. Old trees can be identified by bouncing the tree trunk on the ground. If many needles fall off, the tree has been cut too long, has probably dried out, and is a fire hazard. • Caring for Your Tree Do not place your tree close to a heat source, including a fireplace or heat vent. The heat will dry out the tree, causing it to be more easily ignited by heat, flame or sparks. Be careful not to drop or flick cigarette ashes near a tree. Do not put your live tree up too early or leave it up for longer than two weeks. Keep the tree stand filled with water at all times. • Disposing of Your Tree Never put tree branches or needles in a fireplace or wood burning stove. When the tree becomes dry, discard it promptly. The best way to dispose of your tree is by taking it to a recycling center or having it hauled away by a community pick-up service. Holiday Lights • Maintain Your Holiday Lights Inspect holiday lights each year for frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in the insulation, broken or cracked sockets, and excessive kinking or wear before putting them up. Use only lighting listed by an approved testing laboratory. • Do Not Overload Electrical Outlets Do not link more than three light strands, unless the directions indicate it is safe. Connect strings of lights to an extension cord before plugging the cord into the outlet. Make sure to periodically check the wires - they should not be warm to the touch. • Do Not Leave Holiday Lights on Unattended Holiday Decorations • Use Only Nonflammable Decorations All decorations should be nonflammable or flame-retardant and placed away from heat vents. • Never Put Wrapping Paper in a Fireplace It can result in a very large fire, throwing off dangerous sparks and embers and may result in a chimney fire. • Artificial Christmas Trees If you are using a metallic or artificial tree, make sure it is flame retardant. Candle Care • Avoid Using Lit Candles If you do use them, make sure they are in stable holders and place them where they cannot be easily knocked down. Never leave the house with candles burning. • Never Put Lit Candles on a Tree Do not go near a Christmas tree with an open flame - candles, lighters or matches. Finally, have working smoke alarms installed on every level of your home, test them monthly, keep them clean and change the batteries every 6 months. In an emergency call 911. And remember to practice your home escape plan with the whole family. For further information visit www.kerncountyfire.org

ANNOUNCEMENTS

SERVICES

Aries (March 21-April 19): Don’t let anyone tell you how you should handle this situation. This is between you and one other person, and no one else – period.

Taurus (April 20-May 20): It doesn’t matter how hard you try or how hard you work in some scenarios – some things are just out of your control and can’t be prevented.

Gemini (May 21-June 20): In trying to do a good deed for one person, you may inadvertently hurt someone else’s feelings. Be sincere in your apology, but after that let it go.

Cancer ( June 21-July 22): You’ve got some seriously big decisions to make and a relatively small window of time in which to make them. Just trust yourself; you know what to do.

Leo ( July 23-August 22): Things are clearly not turning out the way you expected, but why should that be a bad thing? Your future is nothing but bright, regardless of which color it is.

Virgo (August 23-September 22): You have every reason in the world to be stressed out, but there’s no excuse for taking it out on co-workers. Everyone’s doing all that they possibly can.

Libra (September 23-October 22): Listen to yourself once in awhile – you may not realize your tendency to, frankly, whine. You can handle more than you think, so try to take it on the chin.

Scorpio (October 23-November 22): You should feel very proud of yourself this week. How far you’ve been able to come, and in such a short amount of time, is worth bragging about a bit.

Sagittarius (November 23-December 21): Don’t take it personally when a family member drops the ball. It’s certainly not due to a lack of caring on their part.

Capricorn (December 22-January 19): The holidays are fast approaching; it’s almost the end of one year and the beginning of the next; why not take a risk? What better time than now?

Aquarius ( January 20-February 19): You may think you can handle this, but before you know it you’ll be in over your head (if you’re not already). Lean on someone, trust someone to help you.

Pisces (February 20-March 20): You’re finally back on the right track where your physical health is concerned. Now you just have to do what you can to take care of yourself and keep it this way.

If your birthday is this week: There are consequences to everything. Consider it another version of: For every action there’s an equal and opposite reaction. You may not think what you’ve done is a very big deal, and considering you’ve plain old done the right thing you’re not entirely wrong. But there will be some fallout, so be prepared to deal with it.

News & Business BriefsTaft Union High School Renaissance Rally Taft Union High School sophomore Ryan Gaunt was honored as most improved student and athletic trainer Lindsay Brown was feted as the staff member of the year at the fall Renaissance rally Wednes-day, Dec. 1st in Mullen gym. The rally celebrates academics.

Ryan Gaunt said he got off on the wrong foot at Taft High as a freshman last year but has since found his foot-ing. “When I came to Taft High, I was not too confident. I had low expectations of myself, a poor self image,” he recalled. Consequently, he earned less than a 2.0 grade point average his first semester. But that began to change exactly a year ago when he attended the 2009 fall renais-sance rally and saw Joshie Ramirez win the award. “When I saw that rally I told myself next year that is going to be me.

I made that my goal but I was still surprised. I can’t believe that it came true.” He made a place for himself in high school, joining the Academic Decathlon team, the chess club and Future Farm-ers of America. “People in those groups became my friends. I started feeling better about myself. My grades improved second semester almost a whole point (letter grade). I was liking myself better and liking my life better and everything else followed that. My self image improved over time and by second semester I was feeling great about myself. I became a recreational reader and I’m now I’m trying to get a 3.0 (B average).” Two weeks ago Nov. 18th, he won a plaque in the school science fair and his project on the corro-sive effects of sugar caused him to change his lifestyle. He has eliminated sodas from his diet and has dropped 22 pounds and now is doing more of the cooking at home. “I’m working my way up,” he said.

And students are taking notice. “Ryan Gaunt is a really sweet kid,” praised senior Amber Strong. “He contributed a lot to the Academic Decathlon last year. He is supportive and determined and has a lot of school pride.” Lindsay Brown, who is married to former Taft High star running back Chad Brown, has worked as a trainer at TUHS for five years. She graduated from Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, earned her bachelor’s degree in exercise science at Cal Lutheran and her masters of science in sports medicine at Georgia State. She said she loves working at Taft High and was surprised and honored that

students picked her for the award. Her professionalism and warm attitude have made her a hit with students “My sophomore year when I was playing football, I got tackled by a couple of players in Coalinga and I tore a ligament in my leg,” senior soccer star Jesse Gama recalled. “She helped me recover for a month and a half until I got better for soccer. She is not only our trainer, she’s like our second mother.” All-league running back Daniel Watts added, “She has nursed me back to health from multiple injuries and always has a great attitude while doing it. I am very thankful and Lindsay Brown is very deserving of this award.” “Lindsay really cares,” added soccer player Edgar Padilla. “I didn’t even know she knew my name when one day I got hurt and she said my name. I was surprised. She helped me recover quickly. When we play a good game, she compliments us. She’s always nice and has a smile on her face.” The well-executed rally brought a smile to a lot of faces. The theme was Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and the gym was festooned with colorful balloons and plenty of candy. Top Cats — students with a GPA above 4.0 in the spring 2010 semester — dined on chocolates and chocolate-

covered strawberries in their own section on the south side of the gym. A dozen Renaissance students dressed as Oompa Loompas — white overalls, red shirts and lollipop-striped socks beneath orange faces and green wigs — liber-ally sprinkled chocolate candy among the bleachers.

Students nominated by staff for good attitudes and staff nomi-nated by students wore blue T-shirts they received for their positive attitudes, explained

Greg Goossen, Renaissance team coordinator, who was dressed in a top hat and suit as Willy Wonka.

Taft Animal Shelter In nearly every letter wrote to Santa, someone is asking for a new puppy or kitten. If you are think-ing of putting an ecstatic smile on your loved ones face with a cute and cuddly pet, are you thinking about getting it from the Taft City Animal Shelter? Most of us aren’t looking for a high dollar dog but just a loving and loyal companion. At any given time the Taft City Animal Shelter is stocked full of them. If you walked in there today you would get to meet an energetic shepherd pup sure to keep your young ones active or a sweet border collie look-ing for a happy home. Two rambunctious sibling healer puppies wrestle around next to a Pomeranian mix who would melt the Grinch’s heart. If you’re in the mind for a frisky kitten there’s an attention demanding orange and white tiger striped who will insist you pet him or a gorgeous blue eyed, white coated prince of a kitten who would graciously reign over your home. Scrooge would be at ease at the affordability of adopting a pet from Taft’s shelter. A $63 charge is all it cost to take your new family member home. The charge is divided between the spay and neuter fee, the rabies vaccination and the licensing fee. Gifting your pet with a license gives a gift to the animals still left at the shelter. For every licensed dog in the city, aid is given directly to the Taft City Animal Shelter to feed and take care of the animals waiting for a home. Not to mention a licensed dog is easier to find if lost and a lost dog who is hurt and has a license on gets taken to the vet for help. It’s only $15 to license your fixed pet for a year. Don’t feel bad if you don’t give in to your pleading child’s eyes for a new friend. Teach them one of the meanings of Christmas by letting them donate pet food or other pet care products to the shelter. In the freezing winter time, things like blankets or dog houses are greatly appreciated by the furry critters. Remember before adopting a new animal, these dogs and cats have already been abandoned once and are now looking for a loving, safe and permanent home. You can reach the shelter at 661-763-1227 or drive out to 1080 Ash St, just the other side of the highway. Happy Holidays!

Photos from top to bottom: Most Improved Student Ryan Gaunt gets a hug from his brother Marcus Gaunt, a 2010 TUHS graduate. Staff member of the year Lindsay Brown, holding 18-month-old son Colt, is congratulated. Greg Goossen, Renais-sance team coordinator, was dressed in a top hat and suit as Willy Wonka. He served as the rally emcee. Homecoming King Peter Galvan eats a candy strip as part of a rally skit. Kayla Kaszycki, surrounded by Oomp Loompas, leads the sophomores in a cheer.
