By calling the festival, the Season of the Giving of the Torah, it places squarely within our purview the acceptance of the Torah. Through the teachings of the Torah, God offers us a blueprint for the creation of a moral and ethi- cal society with the hope that we will be willing to undertake that mission. Shavuot invites us to walk in God’s ways and in the footsteps of generations of Jews who have come before us. We are called upon to listen and hear the words of God echoing across time from Sinai; to hear them addressed to us personally. Our ancestors listening to Moshe in the wilderness knew that they were about to enter the Promised Land and have the opportunity to build their home as a reflection of the To- rah’s values. One can only imagine the incredible sense of excitement and anticipation that animated the Israelite camp as they prepared to walk on the soil where Avraham and Sarah, Yitzchak and Rivka, Ya’akov, Rachel and Laya had begun the remarkable journey of the Jewish people. Visiting Israel gives an opportunity to touch that vibrant energy. Until we do we can still try to experience walking with our fellow Jews in a virtual jour- ney as to join in the Walk With Israel just ten days after Shavuot. Like our ancient Israelite ancestors we can strengthen our Jewish identity and sense of connection as a community by first hearing God’s words and then walking together as one people. As the Israelites approach the Promised Land after almost forty years in the wilderness,
the Torah presents us with Moshe’s final words of instruction, encouragement, and ex-
hortation. Moshe reflects on the significant events that our ancestors shared on their jour-
ney from Egypt to the eastern shores of the Jordan River.
A recurring theme in Moshe’s discourse to the Israelites is the theophany at Sinai, the
moment when revelation took place and our ancestors were given a glimpse of the reality
of God’s presence. Emergent from that moment of encounter with the divine is the Torah
and a new appreciation of what it means to live in the realm of the Holy One.
Moshe, in speaking of this singular event in history emphasizes that the covenant created
between God and the Israelites included not only those who were physically present but
their descendants throughout time. The midrash builds on Moshe’s words and asserts that
the soul of every Jew was present at that moment at Sinai and thus became part of God’s
covenantal community.
As we prepare to celebrate the festival of Shavuot, we remind ourselves that we stood
with our ancestors to receive the Torah, to become an active expression of God’s teach-
ings and to walk in the footsteps of our ancestors along the pathways of our tradition and
heritage. Indeed, one of the names by which the festival is known captures the essential
need for our engaged participation. By calling the festival, the Season of the Giving of
the Torah, it places squarely within our purview the acceptance of the Torah. Through
the teachings of the Torah, God offers us a blueprint for the creation of a moral and ethi-
cal society with the hope that we will be willing to undertake that mission.
Shavuot invites us to walk in God’s ways and in the footsteps of generations of Jews who
have come before us. We are called upon to listen and hear the words of God echoing
across time from Sinai; to hear them addressed to us personally.
Our ancestors listening to Moshe in the wilderness knew that they were about to enter the
Promised Land and have the opportunity to build their home as a reflection of the To-
rah’s values. One can only imagine the incredible sense of excitement and anticipation
that animated the Israelite camp as they prepared to walk on the soil where Avraham and
Sarah, Yitzchak and Rivka, Ya’akov, Rachel and Laya had begun the remarkable journey
of the Jewish people. Visiting Israel gives an opportunity to touch that vibrant energy.
Until we do we can still try to experience walking with our fellow Jews in a virtual jour-
ney as to join in the Walk With Israel just ten days after Shavuot.
Like our ancient Israelite ancestors we can strengthen our Jewish identity and sense of
connection as a community by first hearing God’s words and then walking together as
one people.

Walk with Israel
The Walk with Israel is the perfect opportunity to
show your love and support of Israel while having fun
with family and friends.
Money raised from this year’s UJA Walk with Israel
will benefit the children of Bat Yam whose commu-
nity faces high unemployment rates, poor living con-
ditions and an educational system that faces many
challenges.
There is a huge festival and BBQ after the Walk that
you don’t want to miss!
Families connected to Beit Rayim are invited to join
together in camaraderie and support of Israel. Meet for
a group picture before the Walk starts. You can join
and/or sponsor Beit Rayim Team, just going to
www.walkwithisrael.com
Sunday, May 30th. Kick-off Party: 9:00 am at Corona-
tion Park. Walk start: 10:00 am.
