Meet our Greeks
Many are the misconceptions of Greek members and Greek chapters in our
country, in Arkadelphia and in our Campus community.
If you have only heard about hazing, parties, and fights about our Greek
members, then you really haven't heard much about our Henderson Greeks.
Though they were, at one time, in a lot of trouble; Greeks have improved
within the last three years. They now hold higher GPAs than most regular
Henderson students, are more involved with our Arkadelphia and campus
community; and they are held much more accountable for their actions.
We hope that through this newsletter you (Henderson faculty, staff and
student) learn more about the current state of our Greek community, our
prevention efforts on campus, and some of the programs they participated in.
We hope you enjoy learning what our Greek members have been doing this
semester. And, if you have any program ideas that could benefit our Greek
members and any other Henderson student, do let us know.

State of Our Greek Community
Phi Beta Sigma celebrated this year their centennial. And next year, the Theta Alpha chapter of
Phi Beta Sigma along with the Theta Alpha chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi will celebrate 40 years of
brotherhood at Henderson State University. Although these celebrations are exciting and
noteworthy, there are also extraordinary successes and opportunities occurring every day in the
fraternity & sorority community at Henderson State University.
We all know that fraternal organizations exist to make men better men and women better
women. Research shows fraternity/sorority students develop in these important areas more so
than non-affiliated peers.
However, despite our successes, our Greek community faces serious challenges. Challenges
when it comes to alcohol, sexual violence and hazing allegations. The hazing allegations of today
are much different than those of 10, 20, or 30 years ago and typically involve the abuse of alcohol.
However, our current Greek chapters have a genuinely hazing-free environment and the Greek
culture is not supportive of hazing activities and are intentional in carefully bringing new members
into their organizations.
We were saddened at the surrender of our local Sigma Phi Epsilon undergraduate chapter to
their nationals. But, circumstances out of our control could not stop this from happening. We will
hope one day, due to their long history with Henderson, Sig Ep will charter at Henderson State
University again!

Understanding Greek Expansion
In the last 14 years (early 2000s) Greek life was not very popular nationwide, and college campuses
saw numbers drop significantly from the decades prior. Our registration numbers of the past two
years at HSU have been unusual but are incredibly promising for our Greek community.
Although students interested in joining a sorority or fraternity at Henderson had decreased a little
bit. This year we have seen Greek life being more desirable among undergraduate students again.
Here are some highlights from the 2014 Formal recruitment processes for NPC/IFC:
For the first time, were assisted by a National RFM Specialist in our Fall 2014 NPC Recruitment
We changed our registration format. NPC and IFC Potential New Members (PNMs) paid $20
when registering for Formal recruitment.
67 was the total of PNMs for NPC and 19 for IFC
96% of PNMs were matched with one of our NPC chapters.
Why Not Consider Inviting Another Sorority/Fraternity chapters?
You might be asking…Why not just bring another sorority/fraternity to HSU? There are many steps
in bring a Greek organization to campus, and the first is to have at least 10 student interested enough
in bringing a Greek organization. Plus, they must meet the Academic standards of cumulative GPA of
2.6, and have successfully completed and currently enrolled in 12 hours at Henderson.
This process, you can imagine, takes a long time and we would budget at least 12 months to do it
right (no action occurs during summer months). We want to continue to encourage growth in our
community rather than invite another chapter, which could result in the men and women interested
in joining the chapters eligible to continue recruiting to go to a new group.
