The NEW Home of HSU Soccer!

Page 2: HSU Women's Soccer

Humboldt State University Women’s Soccer team cut the ribbon, and finally moved into their brand new SOCCER COMPLEX at the end of the 2010 season. The College Creek Soccer Field, happily know as “The Lumber Yard,” will be the exclusive home for HSU Soccer!

This state-of-the-art facility is surrounded by apartment style dorms, giving the top of the line turf field a distinct home field advantage! Permanent seating will be installed prior to the 2012 season, and in the coming years players and fans can look forward to lights being installed! This will only add to the already amazing environment with the poten-tial to schedule evening matches!

The Lumber Yard also houses the locker rooms for both the men’s and women’s soccer team. Each team has their own area complete with showers, bathrooms, personal lockers, and flat-screen TV’s! It is the perfect spot to watch game film, or to simply hang out between classes. This facility is one of the most impressive on the entire west coast and will become the standard in which all other fields are measured!

The Women’s Soccer team competes in the CCAA Conference, considered by many to be the most difficult conference in Division II Soccer. Humboldt State is the ideal team for anyone that considers them-selves to be a true competitor.

“In order to be the best you have to play against the best. Not only do we compete in the CCAA, but we take pride in the fact that our out-of-conference schedule is among the most difficult in the country.” - Coach Johnson

Humboldt State University is located in Arcata Califor-nia minutes from the beautiful Pacific Coast. This is an outdoor adventurer’s paradise to say the very least. Out-side magazine even ranks Arcata as one of the nation’s top college towns, while National Geographic Adventure magazine calls it one of the “next great adventure towns!”

With the oceans, rivers, and mountains all within a few miles there is always plenty of kayaking, mountain bik-ing, hiking, surfing, and more!

HSU also offers a total of 49 undergraduate majors, 84 undergraduate minor degrees, 82 options/concentra-tions, 12 graduate programs, 21 credential programs and several certificates of study. It is safe to say that we have something for everyone.

With only one lecture hall on campus that holds over 100 students, your professor will know who you are, and most importantly what it takes for you to be successful! Humboldt State is known for hands on learning. Each program places undergraduate students in a position to leave college with not only a college diploma, but a resume as well!

HEAD COACH

Christian Johnson: Johnson, hired in July 2009, is the former head coach of the men’s and women’s programs at Cal State San Bernardino, and the women’s team at Azusa Pacific. His past triumphs include guiding the Azusa Pacific women’s program to a 24-0-1 record and a national championship in 1998, leading to his selection as National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) NAIA Coach of the Year. In each of his three seasons Johnson’s side qualified for the NAIA West Region Tournament and twice advanced to the national tournament.

From 1997-99 his Azuza Pacific teams compiled a 57-9-3 overall record, winning one Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) title and twice finishing runner-up. His athletes earned two national Player of Year, 13 All-America, 18 All-GSAC, three GSAC Player of the Year and eight All-America scholar recognition. In addition, three of his players have played in the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA), the first all-women’s soccer league where every athlete was a paid professional.

In four years at Cal State San Bernardino, 2000-03, Johnson’s men’s & women’s teams were very impressive. As a member of the CCAA his athletes earned 14 all-conference and four NSCAA All-West Region honors.

In the 2003 season, Johnson’s last at CSU San Bernardino, his Coyote women’s team was 11-8-2 and qualified for the NCAA West regional for the first time in the 15-year history of the program. The Coyote men’s team was 12-8-1 and reached the semi-finals of the CCAA tournament.

Johnson graduated from Point Loma Nazarene in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in physi-cal education. In 1996, he earned his mater’s degree from Azusa Pacific in education.

This is an exciting time for Humboldt State Soc-cer. With a brand new facility, and a new coaching staff in place, the future is bright for the women’s soccer team!

“Our roster is made up of players from all over the West Coast that are dedicated to success. These players are from some of the top club and development programs in the country. At this level that is what you need in order to be suc-cessful.” - Coach Johnson

If you are interested in being a member of the Humboldt State Uni-versity Women’s Soccer team be sure to keep us up to-date with what is going on with you both on the soc-cer field and in the classroom.

On our website you will find the “Prospective Athlete Questionaire.” This form has information about what tournaments we will be attend-ing for recruiting purposes, and will also give potential student athletes like yourself the opportunity to tell us about your own successes.

We also hold College I.D. Camps multiple times each year. Typically held in the spring and summer, College I.D. Camp dates are posted on our website as soon as they come avaliable.
