A lthough I consider myself semi-eco-friendly now, Ican’t say that I’ve always been that way. I used to lit-ter (gasp!) and never recycled. Then, I moved to

Hawaii. I realized not only how beautiful the world is, butalso how much damage people, myself included, were doingto it.

But even better, I realized how easy it is to adopt smallhabits to help the environment. They say the easiest way to

adopt a behavior is to tie itin to something you’realready doing.

I’ve been making a habitof purging items in myhome a couple times a yearto keep it clean and clutter-free, but did you know noteverything you throw awayshould actually be thrownaway? Here’s a handy guidefor what to do with fourpotentially hazardous itemsas you purge:

• Cell phones. First, clear your device of any personallyidentifiable information. Then, offer it back to manufacturersfor recycling or drop it off at an e-waste recycling drop-offlocation, which are located throughout the state. Visithawaii.gov/ewaste for locations.

• Acetone/nail-polish remover. Harmless as it mayseem, acetone is flammable and should not be thrown awayor flushed down the drain. Drop it off at hazardous-waste>>SEE PAGE 8

Concrete solutions thatwork indoors and out

HR COVER STORY APRIL 7 • 2013 3

APRIL 7, 2013 • 3

Concrete has been the choice buildingmaterial for centuries, but did you real-ize that it could be just as visually

appealing as it is strong and functional? Yourexterior concrete may be aged, stained andcovered in mildew; or maybe it’s brand new, butlacks pizzazz. If you want to replace your cur-rent interior floors, but are not sure what tochoose, you don’t need to start from scratch.

Granicrete Hawaii offers many solutionsto work with what you have. Concreteresurfacing is the economical solution thatadds lasting beauty and value to your homeor commercial space.  Nearly limitless indesign, color and texture, a concrete flooroffers numerous options, along with designand functionality unlike any othermaterial. The team of concrete specialists atGranicrete Hawaii can help you with a cus-tom concrete flooring solution to create aneye-catching, vibrant space.

Are you plagued by unsightly stainedand/or cracked concrete? No problem.Granicrete Hawaii’s concrete overlays coverthose imperfections and provide a blank

canvas for its artisans to create the look youdesire. Overlays are patterned, textured andcolored by hand to provide unlimited designoptions for both interior and exterior floors.Flagstone, slate and tile looks are customizedto suit each space. Overlays can also be fin-ished without a pattern in smooth, swirledor stone-like textures, and they are coloredfor a simple, stylish look. At just 1/8- to 1/4-inch thick, overlays dramatically improve thelook of your floors without a noticeableheight difference.

There are a few options for concrete thatis in good condition, but needs a fresh look.Set your home apart with concrete dyesand stains. They are a great way to injectwarmth into your interior and exteriorflooring, without changing its texture. Coloroptions are limitless: bold, bright or naturalsemi-transparent colors can be achievedwith concrete dyes and stains applied direct-ly to existing concrete. Solid stains will maskimperfections with an opaque finish. Choosecolors that complement your décor to cre-ate that “wow” factor. Add some decorative

saw cuts for greater appeal. Using a concretesaw, the artisans cut shallow lines into yourexisting slab and create custom patterns orborders. You can have the luxurious look oflarge tiles without the hassle of grout, whichcracks and discolors.

Another solution for exterior floors is togrind and seal your existing concrete. Thetop 1/8- to 1/4-of-an-inch of the surface isremoved with a grinder, taking care of prob-lems such as pitting, flaking, scaling and dis-colorations. The aggregates found in theconcrete are then exposed, adding textureand character to the concrete. The surfacecan be stained, and then sealed to enhancethe color of the stain and aggregates whileprotecting it from the elements.

Granicrete Hawaii’s flooring solutions aresealed to provide easy maintenance andresistance to moisture, stains, mold and bac-teria, yielding savings for years to come. Theyare a great interior flooring choice for thosewith allergies, as  concrete floors won’t

trap  dirt, animal dander, dust  mites andother allergens.

The flooring look of your dreams is pos-sible. Achieve a custom look, tailored to suityour desires and needs. If you already havean idea in mind, show the Granicrete Hawaiiteam a picture or even a sample piece ofstone, tile or paint to match. Not sure whatyou want? The friendly and knowledgeablestaff will assist in the design process.

To get an idea of the concrete resurfacingpossibilities, take a look at the gallery ofwork on Granicrete Hawaii’s website. Visitthe showroom today, open from 10 a.m. to2 p.m., to see concrete resurfacing solutionsin person and speak with a consultant aboutgetting a free estimate. This is part three of a three-part series.

W ith completion of interiorinstallations and finishes, theKaimuki rebuild covered in

three Hawaii Renovation features over thepast three months was ready for occu-pancy. The owners, a couple who had livedin the original old single-wall home, moved in last weekend.

The series began with demolition, con-crete work and framing. Part two coveredroofing, windows, doors, electrical, plumb-ing, drywall and siding.

Homeworks selections specialist SarahVan De Vanter, the initial contact with theclients, worked closely with them on allphases of the project, from planning andbudget to final interior and exterior selec-tions. The objective was to maintain quali-ty in all phases of construction and finisheswhile keeping in mind what the clientscould afford.

“The owners wanted a simple, easilymaintained home that could serve themat every phase of their lives,” Van DeVanter said. “We were essentially ‘design-

ing for life,’ which takes into account agingin place in various ways. For example, werecessed the master shower to create abarrier-free entrance and incorporated abuilt-in bench and grab bars. In thekitchen, we designed an island with under-counter cabinets on one side and open

space on the other to accommodateseating so it could double as a diningcounter.

“The cabinets, which are maple, have a rich look but were moderatelypriced. Countertops are solid surfacefor easy maintenance. Flooring is awood grain laminate throughout, which contributes to the seamlesslook of the main living area with its‘great room’ open floor plan, enhanced by the vaulted ceilings.”

Energy conservation was a considera-tion. Van De Vanter noted that lighting fix-tures accommodate incandescent andcompact florescent bulbs, and roofing wascompatible with installation of PV panels.

“Aging in Place” will be the topic of afree seminar Tuesday, April 30, 6 to 8 p.m.at the Homeworks Showroom, 2111 S.Beretania St. For reservations, call 955-2777. The topic will also be covered onthe Build New Or ReDo Show Saturdays,9 to 10 a.m., on KHVH Radio AM830.

Storage is no longer an issuewith heavy-duty steel racksHas it been getting harder and harder

to get your car in the garage, if youstill can? Does the carport look like

you’re having a garage sale? Have you forgot-ten what you even have in that storage unityou’re paying $50 or more a month for? If youanswered yes to any of these questions,Advanced Overhead Storage of Hawaii LLC isready to help you fix your storage dilemmawith heavy-duty steel racks that are hung fromthe ceiling and come in a variety of sizes toaccommodate many storage needs.

The company’s most popular 4-by-8-footrack creates 32 square feet of storage space.Compare that to a 5-by-5-foot storage unit(25 square feet), that’s 7 more square feet ofstorage and no monthly payment! Sizesinclude 4-by-8-foot, 2-by-8-foot, 4-by-4-footand a 4-by-4-foot mobile rack. They are pow-der-coated to inhibit rust and can hold up to700 pounds of weight. The racks can be suspended tovarious lengths to accommodate any ceiling height, andeven stacked to provide a shelf-like storage option.

Storage applications are only limited by your imagina-tion.

Most people end up installing multiple units for evenmore valuable storage space. One recentinstall in a standard size two car garage includ-ed two each 4-by-8-foot units and two each 2-by-8-foot units for a whopping 96 square feetof previously non-existing storage space. Thatis almost equivalent to a 10-by-10-foot (100square feet) storage unit, again, with nomonthly payment!

These racks can be used to store frequentlyused items such as surf boards, kayaks, boogieboards, baseball equipment, boating acces-sories, tools or long term storage items such asholiday decorations, business supplies, records, paint and building supplies.

Professional installation and delivery areavailable at a modest cost, and as always, esti-mates and consultations are free. Installations

can be done in finished or unfinished ceilingsincluding concrete. During a free estimate,Advanced Overhead Storage of Hawaii’s friendlystaff can assess your building construction mate-

rial and storage needs and let you know what optionsare available to you.

In Hawaii, where storage space is at a premium,Advanced Overhead Storage of Hawaii provides aunique alternative for gaining additional space in yourhome or business. Call today or visit the company’s web-site for additional information.

Solar energy lightsupin local classroomsBenjamin Franklin once said, “Tell me

and I forget, teach me and I mayremember, involve me and I learn.”

Some of Honolulu’s fourth- and fifth-gradersrecently got involved in developing their ownsolar energy systems when RevoluSun vol-unteers conducted a week-long program forseveral classes at Ala Wai Elementary School.

Students were able to reinforce theirmath and science skills when RevoluSunled a broad discussion about renewableand non-renewable energy, conducted apersonalized project by letting studentsdesign their own PV system and participatein other hands-on solar activities.

“We discussed what the students knewabout the sun and where energy comesfrom,” said RevoluSun marketing managerElana Kopelevich. “They were enthusiasticabout discussing what they see in everydaylife and applying it to these greater themes

of harnessing energy and sustainability —topics that will be important to understandthroughout their lifetime.”

Students were able to learn about solarenergy with projects that involved light-sensitive paper creations and solargrasshoppers in a baking tin. They also par-ticipated in a discussion about renewableenergy and completed worksheets thathelped them design PV systems, whichapplied their school-learned techniques tosolar energy creations of their own.

“Our goal in getting students involved inthe solar energy dialogue is to continueour participation in the community byinvesting in our children, which are thefuture,” related RevoluSun principal EricCarlson. “Education is essential to under-standing the challenges the next generationwill face in the real world. We are proud toprovide this two-day series to elementary

schools interested in supplementing theircurriculum with solar energy information.”

RevoluSun’s free solar education pro-gram is ideal for grade levels four throughsix, although RevoluSun can customize thecurriculum to any grade level. In order toinquire about a scheduling a visit yourschool, please contact Elana Kopelevich [email protected].

Stylish stairs: Three can-doideas that add personalityStairs are no longer just a way

to get from one floor to anoth-er. Realizing that staircases are

quite often major focal points in theirhomes, homeowners are showinglove to this once underappreciatedspace with a wide variety of creativeand easy updates.

Add personality and perk-up thedaily climb in your home with thesefive do it yourself projects.

Walls that wowIn most homes, the staircase is the

centerpiece of your entryway andserves as the first impression.Transforming this space into anextraordinary one is easy by paintinga bold accent wall. To add extrapanache and go beyond the expect-ed look of one solid color, paint thewall next to the stairs or the landingwith an eye-catching pattern using apremium painter's tape, like FrogTapeMulti-Surface. Pick a pattern thatpacks a punch, like an all-over dia-mond motif, geometric shapes, or

classic stripes, which complementstaircases well. The patentedPaintBlock Technology applied to theedges of FrogTape helps prevent paintbleed and leaves precise lines, keepingyour pattern looking sharp.

Dazzling photo displayIf you already love the current color

on your staircase wall, you can easily

add a personal touch by creating aphoto gallery. The key to creating animpressive photo gallery is to keepone element consistent throughout.Whether it's the color or material ofthe frames, or the shading of the pho-tographs, having a uniform compo-nent allows the finished product tolook polished and intentional, insteadof haphazard. Search Pinterest.comfor inspiration and ideas.

Rethink risers and stepsFor an unexpected update, focus

your attention a bit closer to the floor. The area of your stairs that reallytakes a beating are the risers.Breathing new life into them can beaccomplished easily with a freshdesign. No need to stick with neutralshades. Risers are the perfect place totie in a daring pattern. Opt for achevron or Moroccan design with col-ors consistent with your home's inte-rior to achieve your decorative stairs.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: My wife con-stantly tells me that it’s bad feng shui to leavethe toilet lid up and bugs me to put the liddown after use. What’s the big deal? Can yougive me one good reason why I need to do this?

Yes! First and foremost, you mightwant to keep your wife happy andshow her some respect! All kidding

aside, that is a great question, and I’mthankful to have the opportunity to sharethe feng shui aspect of why toilet lidsshould always be down, not up. Hopefully, after reading this article, the advantages ofkeeping the toilet lid down will inspire youto shift your viewpoint and make a changeso that your wife will stop bugging youabout this particular personal habit. It canbe a definite win-win, so read on!

The feng shui symbolism of the toilet

Toilets are considered the biggest energydrains in your home, literally the portalsthat remove waste from your environment.Their raison d’etre is to flush away waste, but they do not distinguish between wasteand “good” energy. On an energetic level, when the lid is up, toilets drain away thegood energy that you would otherwise liketo keep circulating in your home.

Water has drawing power, and an opentoilet lid draws the energy in your homedown the toilet and that includes wealthenergy. Conversely, putting the lid down setsthe intent that you want to keep the“wealth, prosperity and other good stuff ” inyour home. Control what you want to keepor let go of by closing the toilet lid to avoiddrawing the good energy down into a vor-tex of waste. Send the message that “allgood energy and wealth stays in my home.”

What does energy have to do with it?

You may wonder what you can possibly

lose by keeping the lid open. After all, whenthe lid is open, only air surrounds it, right?Actually, no. In feng shui, we understandthat there is unseen energy in an environ-ment that affects your physical, mental andemotional vitality. For example, if you havea lot of clutter, the energy is consideredstagnant, tied up in your things, making youfeel lazy and less productive. The “air” mayfeel thick and heavy. Numerous studieshave shown that people feel better in envi-ronments that are clutter-free. Closing thetoilet lid has the same effect, keeping the“good energy” in the environment for youand your family and friends to enjoy.

I often say, “Where your eyes go yourenergy goes.” For example, if you comehome each day and see the bathroomdoor open, the toilet lid up, and the toilet’sgaping mouth, it is an instant subconsciousdrain on your energy.

What the lid is designed for If we look at it from a functional, non-

feng shui point of view, the purpose of thetoilet lid is to close waste off from the envi-ronment to keep it sanitary and fresh.

Flushing without putting the lid down

If the energetic aspect of closing the toi-let lid doesn’t make sense to you, then letme share some facts that may. Any time atoilet is flushed, a mist filled with bacteria iscreated. Studies have shown that flushingwith the lid open permits the mist to floatin the air and easily travel several feet awayfrom the toilet, lingering for a few hours. This means that the mist reaches yourtoothbrushes, towels, shower curtain, andevery hard surface in the vicinity of the toi-let. If you are the curious type and have a

habit of looking down into the toilet whenyou flush, that mist also covers your hair, eyelashes and exposed skin, and, of course, you also breathe in that unpleasant air.

Studies on microbiologyOver the course of the last 30 years, in

peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Charles Gerba,a microbiologist from the University ofArizona, has written about 400 papers ongerms, infections and disinfection. He stud-ied the germ count in the home, discover-ing that flushing with the toilet lid downprevents bacteria in the water vapor fromcirculating and landing on your toothbrushand other areas.

Although the levels of bacteria foundon the “control” toothbrushes weredeemed not enough to be a health haz-ard, they were clearly speckled with bac-teria from the toilet and the thought ofbrushing your teeth this bacteria, no mat-ter how small the amount, turns mostpeople off.

Prevention is simple. Put the lid downbefore you flush and always wash yourhands afterward. Touching the lid to lowerit is one of the main reasons for washingyour hands.

Feng shui or scienceSo, whether your reasoning is feng shui

or science, keeping the lid on waste willalways keep the good energy in your homeand the “bad” energy out. Of course, theNo. 1 reason to put the lid down is that ahappy wife makes for a happy life!

Home is where the heart is. But it’salso a place where families can bemore conscious of their energy

use. While conserving energy helps savethe planet, it also helps homeowners savemoney.

According to Christine Ackerson, sus-tainability manager at LG Electronics USA,by adopting a green mindset and taking afew simple steps to be more eco-friendly,you’ll help preserve our planet’s resourcesand your budget.

Reduce, reuse and e-cyclePhantom energy waste — the amount

of energy plugged-in appliances and otherelectronics draw even when turned off canadd up. You can reduce phantom energydrain by unplugging appliances you don’tfrequently use or installing power strips

that can easily be turned off. Remember tounplug your cell phone charger when notin use. And use motion sensing exteriorlighting and timers so that electronics suchas space heaters and fans don’t run longerthan intended.

The average consumer household hasabout 24 electronic products, according tothe Consumer Electronics Association, andold or outdated electronics represent oneof the fastest-growing waste streams in theworld. Recycling electronic waste, or e-waste, such as cell phones, televisions andcomputers can save energy and scarceresources by reducing the amount of rawmaterials extracted from the earth, as wellas preventing harmful materials from end-ing up in the environment. For example, recycling one million laptops saves theenergy equivalent of the electricity used by

3,657 homes each year in the U.S., accord-ing to the U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency.

Recycling your old electronics is easy, andthere are a number of resources to help.Manufacturers and retailers often offerrecycling services or take-back programs.

LG offers an online search tool atwww.lgerecycling program.com to find freedrop off locations near you. The U.S.Environmental Protection Agency alsooffers online resources for safe e-waste dis-posal, or you can ask your local municipalityif they offer e-waste collection programs.

The waste, the washer and the wardrobeDoing laundry is a household necessity.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, theaverage household does 392 loads of laundryeach year ; that translates to 7.5 loads per week.Upgrading an old, inefficient washer not onlyleads to water and energy savings, but can alsolead to cleaner clothes.

Energy Star-qualified washers use about 20percent less energy and 35 percent less waterthan standard washers. Larger-capacity machinessave energy because you can wash more clothesin fewer loads. One new “mega-capacity” washerfrom LG has the largest capacity in the industryat 5.1 cubic feet. Plus, it features a special turbowash technology that saves up to 20 minutes perload.

The “mega-capacity” washer also earned the“Energy Star Most Efficient” designation in 2013.This new program recognizes the most efficientproducts on the market. Washers that earn thisdistinction can save consumers the equivalent ofat least 68,000 bottles of water a year.

Go autopilot to cool your homeThe energy used run air conditioning to cool

your home throughout the year can mean bigutility bills. Adopt a green mindset and changethe temperature just a few degrees and the

savings will come naturally. Try adjusting yourthermostat three or more degrees. You mightnot even feel a difference. During periodswhen you’re not in the home, adjust it evenmore. According to the Department of Energy, you can save as much as 1 percent for eachdegree by turning your thermostat back if thesetback period is eight hours long.

An easy way to control your home’s temper-ature is to get a programmable thermostat. Putyour home’s cooling on autopilot by program-ming temperature settings for each day of theweek. Depending on whether you’re home oraway at work, you can set your seasonal pref-erences so your home maximizes energy con-servation while keeping temperatures com-fortable.

Adopt these ideas and you can make a dif-ference in helping to address climate changeand protect the planet, and also save money.Take the “Change the World, Start with EnergyStar Pledge” at the Energy Star website,www.energystar.gov, and make a promise tomake simple behavioral changes to make yourhome more energy efficient and preserveresources for future generations.

Using energy-efficient light-bulbs is a great way tosave energy at home. One

of the simplest yet most impactfulways to go green is to use to LEDlight bulbs.

They’re the most energy effi-cient option and last 10 timeslonger than compact fluorescentbulbs. A cool lighting option, LEDbulbs do not use mercury, soyou’re not putting extra toxinsinto landfills when the bulb doesexpire.

When shopping for new bulbs, look for the Energy Star label. Ifjust one light bulb in everyAmerican home was replacedwith an Energy Star bulb, wewould save about $600 million in

annual energy costs, plus saveenough energy to light 3 millionhomes for an entire year!

Travel can inspire many things. It caninspire song, writing and yes, evenhome décor and design. I just got

back from our family ski trip to Big White inCanada, and although we normally go toTahoe for spring skiing with friends, Big Whitewas just as breathtaking for this local girl.

Funnily enough, though, my favorite part ofa ski vacation is not the skiing — it’s the cozyfireplaces, the slushy feel of snow underfootand the beautiful scenery. I’m constantly onthe lookout for new sources of inspiration, and one afternoon when Darrell, Nicki and Istopped for lunch at the Black Diamondrestaurant, I found a stunning new source.

In ski villages you usually see a lot ofslate, stacked stone, timber, forged metalsand vaulted ceilings — very masculineand traditional. At the Black Diamond, the charcoal-black stacked stone liningthe walls of the booths was juxtaposedhandsomely with a light fixture ofchrome, clear glass tubes and a solidacrylic cylinder with tiny bubbles.

This elegant and very modern fixturecompletely made the room. Armed withmy iPhone, I snapped some photos andtucked the concept away in my brain:One day I’ll use these extreme contrast-ing elements in a future project.

So here are my dos and don’ts foryour travel-inspired design projects.

Do:• Take a walk. Be inspired by your trip.Notice your surroundings — the nature, architecture and décor. And be sure tohave your camera ready.

• Look for local, original art. Generally, youcan find great pieces by local artists ataffordable prices.

• Incorporate photo art at home. Hangsome of the great trip photos you took.Blow them up in black and white or zoom

in super close-up for a more artistic view, and have them turned into canvas prints.

Don’t:• Get too kitschy. Instead of turning anentire room into a shrine to your favoritedestination, incorporate elements of whatinspired you, like the bricks or bubbled glassfrom my ski trip. Or look at your photos and

get a sense of what madeyou fall in love with theplace. Was it the colors? The snow? How can youcapture that memory in adesign element? Maybe it’sa color that you paint onyour door or an accentwall.

• Mix too many decorating styles in oneroom. I’m not talking about little memen-tos, I’m talking about design elements. If youtravel to Europe and want an Italian-villafeel in your living room, then go to Japanand fall in love with rice-paper doors, thingscan get out of hand. Mixing a couple ofstyles can work at times, but you don’twant an over-the-top world-traveler feel.

• Don’t rush. Maybe you’re still on a highfrom your exotic vacation. Maybe youloved that city because it was your honey-moon. Before you makeover your entirehome, take a little bit of time. Look at yourphotos and your space. Do you really wantthat Victorian boudoir or that Moroccanred room? This isn’t a dress, this is a space.Think before you purchase furniture ordrape an entire wall in tapestry.

So if you’re feeling like your room needsan update, why not pack a bag? It’s a greatexcuse to take a trip!

Spring cleaning is abreeze with these tipsIt’s that time of year — throw the win-

dows open and refresh your house witha good, deep clean. Americans spend

nearly 70 hours cleaning their homes eachyear, according to a recent report from theU.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Get yourtime back with easy tips to make theprocess fast and stress-free.

Set the stage Before diving into spring cleaning, tidy up

your home and get rid of any clutter lyingaround. This will help to clear surfaces andmake room for a deep clean.

Storage bins are an affordable solution fororganizing items that you want to keep butdon’t use frequently.

Outdoor spaces can be just as functionalas indoor rooms, so don’t overlook theseareas when you start cleaning. You can hideitems in storage that doubles as decorpieces. The Rubbermaid Rattan ResinStorage Cube Deck Box and SuncastWicker Resin Deck Box provide ampleroom for storage, can double as a side tableand match a wide variety of outdoor decorstyles.

Don’t forget the tough spots Roll up your sleeves and tackle the hard-

to-reach spaces after you declutter. In thekitchen, scrub safely with Simple GreenConcentrated All-Purpose Cleaner — it’s apowerful nontoxic formula that’s completelysafe for children and pets and will make everyinch of your refrigerator sparkle. It’s also mul-tipurpose and can be custom-diluted foralmost any type of surface cleaning, like floorsand walls, pots and pans or large appliances.

Many begin and end cleaning the laundryroom with emptying the dryer vent. But tak-ing care of your dryer isn’t just limited to thelint filter screen. Small particles get throughand can eventually build up inside the dryerto block the outside vent ducting. Avoid thispricey mistake and use a vacuum with ahose attachment to clean out all remaininglint. It takes a couple minutes but this easystep could save you headaches in the future.

Starting the spring season off with a deepclean can reduce the time you spend clean-ing throughout the year.

Refresh your home from floor to ceilingSpring is the time of year for renewal.

So, it’s no surprise that springtimefinds most people planning to reju-

venate their spaces. Four out of fiveAmericans have a room in the home inneed of redecorating, according to a 2013study by Homegoods. Unfortunately, alltoo often the decorating process is asource of stress and anxiety for homeown-ers. How will you ever afford new furniturein your living room? How can you be on-trend without dating your home?

Follow these tips to give your home astress-free, springtime makeover:

Reclaiming your home’s foundationAs the foundation of your home, your

flooring needs to complement your per-sonal taste, while living up to your lifestylein terms of traffic, household members andpets, exposure to moisture and mainte-nance required. With the countless colorand design options, the wide range of floor-ing materials and your own budgetary con-siderations, you may find selecting flooringto be particularly stressful.

Tapping into the customer-focusedtrends of high-end and online retailers,Tarkett empowers customers as they shopfor flooring. Tarkett’s iSelect system deliversexactly what the name promises. It lessens

the unknowns, simplifies the choices andintroduces an interactive, multi-facetedshopping experience. Visit www.tarkettna.com/Inspiration/iSelectStory to walkthrough the iSelect process and find theperfect, customized floor for your taste,

lifestyle, budget and even health.

Sweat the small stuffInstead of worrying about the new

armoire you can’t afford, focus your energyon the finishing touches which can revital-

ize a space quickly and inexpensively. Payingattention to the details is a cost-effectiveand fun way to express yourself in spacesthroughout your home, while also makingeach space feel complete.

Mirrors have a magical effect on a roomby making a space feel larger, reflecting lightthroughout it and adding a touch of panache. You can find a wide variety of hanging mir-rors to fit your taste at discount retailers oryou can purchase a mirror at an estate saleor secondhand store and “upcycle” it with atextured coat of Krylon Dual HammeredFinish spray paint in Silver or Dark Bronze.

The sky’s the limitIf you really want to revitalize a room, it

may be time to look up. One of the mostpopular design trends of 2013 is paintingyour ceiling. This blank and all-too-often-overlooked canvas has tremendous poten-tial to transform a bedroom, living room ordining room. It can be as simple as repaint-ing a white ceiling a very pale blue or grayto create the illusion that there is no ceil-ing. Or if you’re feeling bolder, you canmake your ceiling a major accent elementthat gives a dull room a bright or daringsplash of color.

PACIFIC ISLANDS CONSTRUCTION APRIL 7 • 2013 19

Pacific Islands Construction desires to provide a com-prehensive approach to the solar industry. It is a solarcompany that is also a general contractor and roof-

ing contractor, which makes it better able to install andmaintain your solar system.

Pacific Islands Construction keeps abreast of the latestissues and is prepared to provide prospective buyers withinformation that makes them informed buyers. There aremany issues regarding the solar industry that the consumershould understand before they make an investment in aphotovoltaic system. As a customer or prospective buyer, having a company that provides the greatest value and serv-ice is important when there are so many options. The follow-ing information is provided to help educate you so that if youfind a great deal, you know it really is a great one.

The consolidation of the PV module manufacturingindustry continues and this past week, Bosch announcedthat it is leaving the solar industry. Suntech, once the largestsolar company in the world, announced bankruptcy this pastweek, and SolarWorld has delayed its annual press confer-ence as it tries to restructure its debt with creditors.

The crisis in the solar manufacturing business affects theconsumer when the long-term warranty he or she believesin is no longer good. It also affects consumers when qualityissues arise, as manufacturers who are losing money placemore value on trying to stay in business and less on thequality of the product they are selling. The bottom line isyou need to be conscious of the current financial health ofthe solar equipment manufacturer you are considering.

Pacific Islands Construction believes that Kyocera ofJapan, which has been manufacturing solar modules for

more than 37 years, is one of the best choices for solar.Kyocera modules are made to very exacting standards thatother manufacturers ignore. They include heavy reinforce-ment of the module frames and a potted junction box toprotect the electrical connections. These modules just donot fail and are never returned due to failure. Modules thatwere manufactured more than 25 years ago are still pro-ducing more than 90 percent of their original rated output. No other company in the industry can match Kyocera per-formance, and new testing standards confirm that Kyoceraquality exceeds the more stringent testing, whereas othersare failing. Kyocera is a profitable company and few solarmanufactures can say that.

Solar system installation practice should be a primaryconcern, almost as much as the equipment you are consid-ering. Having the right roof flashings for numerous roof pen-etrations, substantial securement to the roof by the rackingsystem and air flow underneath the modules are concernsyou need to know about. Call Pacific Islands Construction tofind out about the right installment practices and whyKyocera modules are the best and safest choice for yoursolar needs.

It’s all in the detailsWhen considering exterior home

improvements during spring andsummer, many homeowners go

for updates such as the replacement of sid-ing or windows. These projects can makethe home look great while boosting energyefficiency, but no matter how much home-owners invest in siding or windows, it willonly look as good as the trim used to com-plete the job.

Trim products are designed to be usedaround windows, doors, eaves and gables, and for application on your home’s cornersand porch columns. Many installers opt forbasic corner posts, J-channels and finishingaccessories, which are functional, but alsodetract from the home’s overall style.

“One mistake that homeowners andcontractors often make in an exteriorremodel is finishing a beautiful window andsiding replacement with basic or inexpen-

sive trimwork,” said Steve Moore, architectwith BSB Design. “Working with your con-tractor to accessorize with high-quality,low-maintenance trim around windows, doors and the roofline helps complete thelook and enhance architectural features.Trim and mouldings are the glue that tiesthe look together.”

Whether you prefer a modern, tradi-tional, rustic or Victorian style, there aremany trim options on today’s market toconsider, including products made of wood, aluminum, fiber cement, engineered woodand vinyl, each with their own unique fea-tures. But if you want the look of real woodwithout the maintenance or having toreplace in a few years, turn to buildingproducts manufacturers like Ply Gem thatnow offer cellular PVC trim with a 30-yearwarranty. Features of this material typicallyinclude a wood grain or smooth finish

option, natural wood dimensionsand resistance to rotting, crack-ing and splitting. Due to thesuperior material, paint will alsoadhere better and stay brightlonger than painted wood.

Cellular PVC trim and mould-ing products are easy for yourcontractor to install, and areengineered to work with virtual-ly any siding type, including vinylsiding, stone veneer, brick, fibercement and stucco.

“Since trim is incredibly visible,it should be chosen with thesame care as siding,” said JerryBlais, vice president of marketingfor Ply Gem siding group.

If you want to see how your homewould look with a makeover, tools like TheDesigned Exterior Studio on www.

plygem.com allow homeowners to virtuallycustomize exterior home designs.

How to accessorize your home exterior and add finishing touches with trim

Page 22: HR 04072013 opt

Now that spring is here and the days are a littlelonger, your yard can quickly become the mostimportant “room” of your home. However, you

aren't alone if your back yard looks outdated and lackluster. Here are a few updates to help you create the perfect out-door living space.

Gates and gate hardwarePerhaps the first thing you and your guests see (and use)

when entering your yard is the gate, so why not make agreat first impression by updating rusty and squeaky gatehardware? D&D Technologies recently launched theLokkLatch Magnetic, a gate latch that operates and locksfrom both sides of the gate, and it's re-keyable so you don'thave to carry multiple keys for your house. Featuring D&D’spatented magnetic latching system, and horizontal and ver-tical adjustment to ensure a consistent gate closure uponground movement, LokkLatch Magnetic is the first gate lockto offer coordinating handle trim covers that match yourlighting and yard accessories. Available in non-rusting black, brushed and polished metal, the gate hardware helps tocreate a cohesive look that enhances your outdoor livingenvironment.

Lighting Weather permitting, your yard can be the perfect place

to relax for an evening. Avoid sitting in total darkness. Themany options of patio lighting including path sconces, postlamps and even string lights — all are an answer to keepingyour outdoor space lit and inviting.

FurnitureThe key to decorating any room in your home is attrac-

tive, comfortable furniture that beckons to be sat upon, andthis is no different for your outdoor furniture. While priceson outdoor furniture can be a little overwhelming, used fur-niture with a little love and creativity can be good as new, without the high cost. Cozy chairs, chaise lounges andbenches can gain new use with a coat of outdoor spray

paint, then recover cushions and add colorful pillows to fin-ish it off.

With a few simple updates, you can easily create an out-door retreat in your own backyard that can provide you thespace for entertaining, reading and relaxing without a costlyrenovation. So go get started.

A thriving landscapeThis season, experts from Pennington Seed de-stress

lawn and garden care with seven quick tips that willhelp reduce your outdoor water consumption, while

keeping your landscapes lush, healthy and vibrant.

Don’t be overly reactiveLawns tend to be overwatered, often with entire lawns

being watered to avoid a few dry spots. Overwatering cancause numerous problems, including: shallow root systems;increased disease, weed or insect infestations; reduceddrought tolerance; and increased thatch and excessivegrowth. A lawn does not need water until the color falls by50 percent, at which time only one inch of water should beadded.

Select water-efficient plantsBy utilizing grass seed that requires less water, lawns are

more resilient during periods of drought and easier to main-tain (e.g. reduced time, energy and resources). Consider apure-bred, drought-tolerant seed, like Pennington SmartSeed, which stays green for up to three weeks withoutwater and requires 30 percent less water year after yearversus ordinary seed.

Install water-saving systemsInstall a drip irrigation system around trees and shrubs in

your landscape to improve water efficiency. Drip irrigationapplies water only when needed, minimizing water loss dueto evaporation and preventing moisture from reachingspaces between plants — thus, limiting the chance of weed

growth in those areas. Rain barrels also can be used to har-vest rainwater for later use in landscapes as irrigation.

Water wiselyWater at night or in the morning to reduce the chance

of water being lost to evaporation in the mid-day heat. Thistiming allows grass to retain moisture but dry in enoughtime to prevent diseases that are more likely to develop ina wet-lawn.

Retain moisture with mulchSpread mulch when seeding new areas to add a protec-

tive layer over soil. The mulch allows soil to retain moistureduring the critical seed germination and establishmentstages. The clippings from mulching mowers also serve thesame purpose — preserving soil moisture and nutrients.

Fertilize thoughtfullyFertilization supplies plants with essential nutrients for

strength, uniform growth and a healthy, fibrous root system.A vibrant and healthy plant makes the best use of availablewater, meaning less water is needed over time. There also isless chance of the plant being "burned" or dried out to apoint beyond recovery. Fertilizers, however, should not beapplied during periods of drought.

W hether constructing a residencefrom scratch or creating anaddition to an existing structure,

homeowners desire the “wow” factor thatcomes from seeing their dwelling exceedexpectations. For those clients that havetrusted their homes to S TanakaConstruction, the “wow” factor stems fromthe exceptional professionalism providedby the experienced building firm throughevery step of the process.

The home builder has long aimed toplease its clients, taking immense pride inthe referrals it receives from satisfied cus-tomers who are delighted with its constantcommunication, quality work and ability tofinish on time and at or under budget.

“Our main forte is brand-new homes oradditions,” said S Tanaka’s owner RyanTanaka, who also noted that the companyis well-suited to handle specific renovationsas well as kitchens and bathrooms. “We’rea design-build operation, so we work with

the customer as far as coming up with thelayout of the house and executing itsdesign.”

The company got its start 28 years agowhen Shinya Tanaka began the process ofhelping Oahu’s residents out of a humbleoffice/warehouse space on Ward Avenue. While the company has grown, and nowoccupies a more functional locale in Kalihi,S Tanaka Construction still makes it a prior-ity to provide stellar customer service, including flexible appointment schedulesfor its clients. Customers can plan consulta-tions during evening hours and on week-ends — schedules are created to accom-modate the needs of clients.

When planning an addition to a currentstructure, Tanaka reminds customers thatthe cost per square foot can actually out-weigh that of a new building because of theadditional costs involved with retrofitting ortapping into existing infrastructure and link-ing it to a brand-new project area. S TanakaConstruction provides free estimates thataren’t necessarily based on a per-square-foot basis, as different amenities and otherdesires will create inaccuracies within thequote.

For example, when a homeowner

chooses to add options such as air condi-tioning systems or upgrade bathroom fix-tures, lighting fixtures (e.g. a $10,000 chan-delier), cabinetry, countertops, flooring etc.,the cost of the project will increase whilethe square footage of the building remainsthe same — thus, what other companieswould have offered as an estimate basedon cost per square foot would then beskewed.

As another example, a 2,000-square-foot home that costs $300,000 wouldcome out to $150 per square foot. Now,lets add photovoltaics, which would cost$30,000, and increase the contract price to$330,000, which would equal $165 persquare foot.

“We don’t charge by the square foot. Some companies do, but we don’t becausethere are too many variables. Every lotcondition is different and the conditionsvary regardless of the home’s squarefootage,” Tanaka explained. “With additions,we have to deal with the existing structure, everything from walls to windows and con-crete needs to be factored in, and thataffects the cost — and a lot of peopledon’t realize the extra work involved asopposed to starting from scratch.”

Whether you have a vision or you’re inthe brain-storming process, get your freeconsultation at S Tanaka Construction bycalling 848-5010 or visiting www.STanakaConstruction.com.
