Ifeel like my schedule is finally winding down. SinceJanuary, I’ve taken four trips, wrote and defended mythesis (did I mention I’m a graduate student?), threw my

sister a bachelorette party and hosted houseguests, allwhile keeping up with my writing duties and teaching anundergraduate class for the first time. Needless to say, myhome has taken a backseat to other things. Now, I couldn’tbe more excited to settle down and start nesting onceagain.

Throughout this whirlwind of a year, I’ve gotten takeoutfor dinner more than I’d like to admit. It’s a shame becausethe kitchen is my favorite room in the house. I love to cook, and I can’t wait to get back in there. In the spirit of EarthMonth, I’ll be following these tips to go greener.

• Go-go gadget. Toaster ovens, microwaves, rice cookersand crock-pots all use less energy than stoves or conven-tional ovens. Whenever possible, opt for these countertopdevices.

• Decide on the dishwasher. Hand-washing dishes mayseem to save resources, but it actually wastes more waterthan if you were to run a fully loaded dishwasher. Plus, ifyou use the energy-saving, no-heat drying option, you mayeven save electricity, assuming you use hot water to hand-wash.

• Plan ahead. When I’m in my groove, I plan the week’s

meals ahead of time. I go to the store and (mostly) stick tothe list. This drastically cuts down on the chances of last-minute runs to the store, which saves on gas, as well asspur-of-the-moment calls for takeout, which saves moneyand waste. Bonus points for buying in bulk.

• Ditch the plastic bags. I’m not talking about the bags youuse for groceries, although you should ditch those as well.I’m talking about zip-close bags for storing food. Instead, choose reusable, BPA-free containers. Glass, ceramic and

stainless steel won’t leach chemicals into your food the wayplastic can.

• Box it out. Have you ever cleaned out your fridge andfound food items buried in the back? Designate a box ded-icated to quickly perishable or near-expiration-date items.Encourage members of your household to consume thoseitems first. You’ll cut down on waste and save money in thelong run.

There are plenty of ways to go green in the kitchen.Star t by assessing your routine and figuring out smallways to make it a little more eco-friendly. Love groceryshopping? Opt for local brands. Little tweaks can makebig differences.

Before you tear up your entire bath-room, consider bathtub and tile refin-ishing and reglazing. In only one day,

your surfaces can be brilliantly re-grouted,repaired and re-colored with a tough acryliccoating that will last for years.

Did you just move into a new property orapartment? Get a fresh start with a new, clean bathtub or all-tile surface, and make itaffordable!

Have a green, yellow or pink tub? Al’sBathtub Refinishing leaves your fixtures with adazzling fresh look that is simple to maintain, while creating the strongest bond availablefor a long-lasting, stunning finish. Al’s Bathtubspecializes in the restoration of authentic clawfoot bathtub refinishing, pedestal sink refinish-

ing and all-tile refinishing without wastingmoney and time.

Put together the savings of our reglazingwith a new tile floor installation for a completesolution. In this economy, we’re not able toafford to waste money or time. Strategies forgetting the best job at the right price save both.

Al’s Bathtub Refinishing’s objective is simplyto deliver the most appealing and cost-effec-tive way to upgrade a bathroom in a way thatsaves its homeowners’ resources.

The company has been used in this slug-gish economy more than ever before byhomeowners and managers who want theirbathtubs, countertops and sinks looking likenew at a fraction of the cost of replacement.Sellers who improve the quality of their bath-

rooms and kitchens sell their propertiesquicker than those who do not. With pricesstarting at less than $380 per tub, you’ll findbathtub resurfacing to be a fraction of thecost of replacement.

Quality renters also want quality unitswhere their bathtubs, sinks and countertopsare not dull, damaged or rusted. With minimalinterruption to renters, units may be used 24hours after reglazing. While saving cash, timeand the environment, a wide range of bath-tub refinishing colors and a change of fixturesenables you to modernize the design of abathroom. With superior coatings, apartmentowners are guaranteed that whether theirfixtures are porcelain, fiberglass, cultured mar-ble or acrylic, they can be repaired and refin-

ished to look like new with huge savings.

Bathtub refinishing vs. replacementAl Fernandez, owner of Al’s Bathtub

Refinishing, explained that not every bathtubcan be refinished. Some will have to end upin a landfill while others can be resurfaced.

Here is why bathtub replacement isexpensive and messy:

• Other bathtubs are not the same size asthe new ones made today. that poses aproblem in trying to get the tub to fit intothe exact same spot as the old tub.

• New bathtubs may be bought for less than$300, but the total price for a completereplacement may run up to $4,000 or more.

• Walls have to be demolished and tiles mayhave to be replaced. In addition, a plumber, tile setter and perhaps an electrician areneeded to put the fixtures back together.

• Old tubs, tiles and walls end up in landfills.

Using Al’s Bathtub Refinishing, the wholebathtub restoration process is contained tothe bathroom, and there is no trip to thelandfills.

Refinishing is definitely the better choicecompared to replacement if you consider theenvironmental impact, time and budget. If youare unable to go with refinishing at this time, consider other ways of recycling your oldtubs, so as to keep them out of landfills.

A company with luxuriouschoices in home flooring

BY KYLE GALDEIRA

For more than 30 years, Pergo Laminate Floors havebeen designed to withstand almost anything life candish out.

Accordingly, American Carpet One serves as Oahu’sleader in providing the superior quality and performanceoffered by the Pergo flooring line.

Pergo’s new luxury vinyl tiles represent the industry’stop-quality laminate technology that blends sophisticatedstyles and functionality. The product became so popular, thatit is now synonymous with the flooring type, much the sameway facial tissue is referred to commonly as Kleenex.

“When you ask for laminate, you ask for Pergo,”explained American Carpet One sales manager AaronOkamoto.

The flooring system is water-resistant, and serves as anideal solution for providing an elegant yet durable floor cov-ering in high moisture areas. The luxury vinyl tile also fea-tures a durable wear layer for enhanced surface protectionand is easy to install without the need for additional equip-ment. Additionally, the flooring comes with a lifetime war-ranty against wear-through.

Pergo luxury vinyl tile will properly service every room ina home or business, and is also suitable for water-proneareas such as bathrooms, kitchens and bars. However, because the product features a classy, upscale look, it alsoserves common areas such as living rooms.

“There are no limitations to the application of this prod-uct,” Okamoto said.

The Pergo collection features 10 color varieties, and

American Carpet One stocks seven of them — the largestsuch selection of this product on Oahu. The flooring systemis perfect for both new home and building construction aswell as remodeling projects. The planks install easily, and fea-ture an easy-to-use locking system that takes the hassle andexpense out of the installation process.

“Just lay it down, lock it in and you’re ready to go,”said Okamoto of the simple installation that does notrequire adhesive.

Last year, American Carpet One became the firstcompany in Hawaii to have all its journeymen carpetand flooring installers approved by CertifiedFloorcovering Installers (CFI), an international non-prof-it organization established in the early 1990s. Theinstallers are trained and certified with the end goal ofassisting homeowners and customers by ensuring thatthose working on their projects are indeed qualified.Installers working at the company need to pass bothwritten and performance tests in order to gain CFI cer-tification. These certified installers are identified by theCFI seals on both their uniforms and work vehicles.

“This product is made for the do-it-yourselfers, butAmerican Carpet One does have a skilled team ofCertified Flooring Installers ready to perform the instal-lation should you so desire.”

A s the most energy-dependent statein the union, Hawaii imports morethan 90 percent of the energy it

consumes. But recently, with great stridesbeing made in the Islands’ solar and renew-able energy sectors, the state is takingimportant steps to move away from ourreliance on foreign energy. Leading thecharge, solar power has been responsiblefor creating enough clean energy to power18,000 homes right here in the Islands since2009. Since the state imports an estimated$5 billion worth of imported oil every year, that’s a huge step in the right direction.

At the foundation of Hawaii’s shifttoward solar energy stands federal andstate tax credits that allow families whoinstall solar the opportunity to deduct up to65 percent of their cost. Recently, the stateof Hawaii has enacted efforts to cut thosevaluable tax credits to homeowners, makingtoday the best time ever to go solar.

Solar tax credits set to declineIn an effort to ensure that Hawaii con-

tinues to wean itself from foreign energy, state house and senate members recently

gathered at the capital with members ofthe Hawaii Solar Energy Association(HSEA) along with environmentalists andmembers of the solar industry to advocatefor the renewal of the original solar taxcredits set in place in 2009.

“We’ve made so much progress overthe last few years in transitioning Hawaiiover to a cleaner energy future, and I firmlybelieve that the original state tax creditswere a great way to help spur that change,”said Andrew Yani of Bonterra Solar. “Hawaiiis blessed with an abundance of renewableenergy, and I would argue that we have thepotential to go from being the most for-eign-energy dependent state in the coun-

try to one that produces almost all of itsown energy ... We could set a new stan-dard for the world right here in Hawaii.

“Plain and simple, these tax credits reallyhelp secure Hawaii’s future and that’s whywe’re here at the capital today. As an extraincentive, we’ve partnered up withHawaiian Airlines to offer 15,000 miles fornew installations.”

Solar benefits environment, economyThe great progress that has been made

within the solar industry has not onlyhelped the state take control over their

own future, but it’s also provided a much-needed boost to the local economy. In2012 alone, it’s been estimated that morethan a quarter of all local construction jobswere created by the solar industry.

Don’t wait, go solar todayWhether it’s helping to save the environ-

ment by reducing Hawaii’s dependence onforeign oil or creating thousands of newjobs in Hawaii, we need solar in Hawaii. Andwith tax credits set to expire, the clock isticking. Don’t wait until tomorrow to gosolar; secure your energy future today.

Getting the most outof your PV technologyIn recent months, solar technology sales

have declined on a global scale. “Theworldwide slow down in solar is akin

to smoke from a smoldering fire,” saidWendell Choy, president and chief execu-tive officer of Solar Wave. “In Hawaii, theadministrative rule change regarding taxcredit eligibility threw gasoline on this fireand the result was a severe drop in resi-dential photovoltaic (PV) sales.”

Despite the setback, those in the PV fieldremain optimistic. “It appears the legislaturewill come to the rescue and restore much ofthe former tax credit policy,” said Choy.

It’s clear that solar electric systems remaineffective and efficient. “Five years ago, special-ists suggested that 21 cents per kilowatt hour(kWh) was the level for grid parity, meaningthat at 21 cents conventional financing with-out tax incentives would result in savings forany kWh rate above 21 cents,” explained

Choy. “Hawaii is well above 30 cents.”Despite the government facing severe

financial constraints, Solar Wave highly advisesthose considering PV to buy while tax incen-tives are in place.

Do your research first Consultants at Solar Wave suggested

researching and buying from panel manufac-turers that have diversified business inter-ests, a multitude of income sources and arewell capitalized. “Investing in PV is harderthan buying a car because the car is not

expected to last 25 years,” explained Choy.“There is inadequate education out there asto what makes a PV system last as long as itswarranty.”

Perhaps one of the most important ele-ments of PV shopping is picking a productfrom a credible manufacturer, one whosebusiness will be able to sustain future PVtrends. “Solar Wave can recommend thematerial suppliers that we think will be aroundfor more than 25 years,” said Choy. “Buyinglongevity will cost more now but you will save

more over the lifetime of the investment.”Solar Wave’s design center allows individu-

als to see, touch and explore the many roofattachment methods, racking choices andpanel manufacturers available on the market. The Solar Wave team is made up of design-ers who are electrical engineer graduatesspecializing in commercial as well as residen-tial PV design. Such qualifications allow cus-tomers to be informed about their solardecisions. “Let us help you reach the goal offree electricity,” said Choy.

The company is also offering a huge sale during whichcustomers can take advantage of savings ranging from 40 to50 percent off the entire stock of cabinetry and counter-tops.

Golden Cabinets & Stone also offers multiple elementsof customization, including 30- and 40-inch wall cabinets aswell as the option of including glass panels as an addedartistic element. Special orders are welcomed, and if cus-tomers provide the measurements for their desired cabi-netry, Golden Cabinets & Stone can create a 3-D computerrendering of what the finished product will look like.

Cao also encouraged customers to stop in and checkout Golden Cabinets & Stone’s new selection of porcelaintiles. Multiple varieties of the tile are available and the cov-

ering resembles travertine — a form of limestonedeposited by mineral springs.

“The porcelain tile really provides the look ofnatural stone modeling traver tine,” Caoexplained.

Golden Cabinets & Stone has gained a reputa-tion for offering quality, affordable cabinetry andcountertops to meet the needs of Hawaii’s con-sumers for more than five years. Cao noticedhow expensive it had become to purchase theproducts in Hawaii and sought to bring moreaffordable options to residents looking to eitherbuild from scratch or remodel existing spaces.

Cao noted that Golden Cabinets & Stone is fully stockedwith inventory and “a wide range of choices” are availablefor customers shopping for everything from cabinetry tohardware — including handles for an attractive yet func-tional touch.

“When we transform a client’s outdated kitchen into anew, more functional space, it is most satisfying seeing theirface and hearing how much their whole family enjoys thisnew element in their home,” Cao said.

Golden Cabinets & Stone operates out of a convenientcentral location to serve its customers that have come toappreciate the company’s professional customer service, quality products and “unbeatable” prices. With a 3,000-square-foot showroom at its Kalihi-Palama store, located at

For more than 20years, Graham Build-ers, Hawaii’s premier

design+build firm, has helpedhundreds of homeownersbring their dream home toreality. From its early years, the locally owned companywas a pioneer in developingthe concept of multigenera-tional homes. GrahamBuilders recognized Hawaii’sunique culture and how weembrace ohana, and has ledthe effort to design and buildmultigenerational homes forfamilies.

With so many in need ofmultigenerational living solu-tions, Graham Builders hasteamed up with GrahamMortgage Inc. to provideimportant financing informa-tion and options. Since it iscommon for ohana to poolresources, families need tobe aware of what is involvedin the financing phase beforethey begin on design.

“Many families believethat just because mom anddad own the land with nomortgage on the property, that it is easy to qualify fora construction loan,” saidCharlotte Graham, presi-dent of Graham MortgageInc. “This is typical wherethe parents have the assets, but are on a fixed incomeand the children have theearning power with limitedassets and more expenses.”

Like regular home loans, lenders look at the borrow-er’s debt to income ratio, credit scores, liquid assets,

employment stability andother factors before a con-struction loan can beapproved. This loan requiresmore documentation, though, like copies of theconstruction contract, specsand bond among others.

Construction loans posea bigger risk to lendersbecause homeowners areessentially borrowing mo-ney for something that doesnot yet exist. Additionally, lenders want the construc-tion project to be successful. They look at the builder todetermine his experiencelevel, if the builder has suc-cessfully completed similarprojects and if the builder isbondable. As a result, con-struction loans are typicallymore expensive, since lenderstack on additional interest andpoints to the loan.

“Financing a newly builthome is more involved thanmost homeowners think, which is why we have part-nered with GrahamMortgage to talk about theimportance of setting abudget, pooling togetherfamily resources and financ-ing options at our monthlyseminar,” said Evan Fujimoto, president of GrahamBuilders. “We present acomplete program to better

prepare the homeowner fortheir project. It is importantthat homeowners meetwith lenders or mortgagebrokers to understand allthe financing options avail-able to them before moving

forward with the project. This is especially the case forthose interested in buildinga multi-generational homebecause there is more thanone family involved.”

Trusting in a qualified contractorBY VICTOR YEUNG

There are so many thingsto consider and dobefore, during and after a

renovation. Having a contractorcontrol the flow of the projectwill help make sure the projectgoes according to plan and fin-ishes within the time promised.CV Construction LLC is justthat type of company.

A recent project involved ahomeowner and servicemanwho, just before he wasdeployed, inquired about ourservices. When I went to com-plete the free estimate, he had

already been deployed, so hiswife walked me through theirrenovation request. I then draft-ed an estimate on site and satdown with the homeowner’swife and explained the estimatefrom beginning to end.

After a few email exchangesbetween the deployed husbandand I, the couple settled on whatthey wanted to complete intheir renovation. I had the wifecome to our showroom to lookat some samples and finalize thecontract. Then we went shop-ping for their appliances.

Contractors always knowwhere to get the right-priced

materials for your project and helpyou with buying the right appli-ances to fit your budget. Whileshopping, I gave her my ideas ofitems that would fit her budget. We settled on what she wantedand had the items delivered.

As with all renovations, therewere bumps along the way. Ihelped the couple by maintain-ing contact with both the hus-band and wife. After the projectwas completed, I found out thather father did a similar renova-tion (not in Hawaii) and wasamazed at the speed and qualityof the project.

CV Construction LLC strivesto exceed the expectations ofthe homeowner with each proj-ect. We maintain an open line ofcommunication so there are nosurprises, and we always striveto save time and money.

We have a special going onright now for a brand-new housebuild ($115 per square foot min-imum for a 2,000-square-footbuild).This includes Hardie BoardSiding/Bamboo Flooring andStandard Plumbing fixtures(restrictions apply). Call toinquire more about the special.

QUESTION OF THE

QUESTION: My mother-in-law recentlypassed away after living with us for the past fewyears, and I wanted your advice on what to doto “clear” the room she was staying in. We missher dearly, yet know that we have to do some-thing to her room in order to move forward in apositive way. We read your column every weekand are interested in your suggestions as to howwe can do this.

Your situation is common, and I candefinitely give you simple instructionson what to do. Clearing the energy

of the room your mother-in-law was stayingin is easy and can be done in a way that hon-ors her memory and presence in yourhearts. It is never too late to clear a room.

Feng shui room clearingIf you want to follow feng shui tradition,

do nothing to the room until after thememorial or burial ceremony, as that iswhat officially “closes the life” of the per-son. If the person was ill prior to death, the belief is that he or she leaves a residueof yin or “negative” energy, consideredstagnant, that is best cleared from theroom; but even if the death was accidentalor sudden, a cleansing is always in orderafterward.

Bedroom cleansingOn the day of the cleansing, open all the

windows in the house, symbolically allowingfresh energy to replace the old. Then youcan begin cleansing the rest of the room.

Keep in mind that no “rule” says you haveto clear out everything, but clearing the homeof your loved one’s items will help you andothers in the family more easily process thesadness and grief. Never confuse clearing outyour loved one’s things with clearing yourloved one from your memory. Remind your-self during the clearing process that yourloved one’s items are simply “things” and cannever take his or her place or the memories

you hold dear. In reality, your lovedone’s spirit will live on forever inyour heart and memory.

The general methodSet some ground rules before

starting. It might be helpful to workby yourself if you’re feeling solitaryand want to focus on what you’redoing. In some circumstances, youmay want to include others to helpwith certain decisions or becauseyou may be feeling emotionally and physicallydrained. Whether you handle these choreson your own or with help is ultimately yourdecision.

Follow the steps below:In general, when you cannot make a

decision about an item, put it aside anddecide at another time.• Remove all personal clothing. Most peo-ple donate the clothing if it is in good repair, but that decision is personal. Do what ismost comfortable and appropriate for you.• Remove or put away personal memen-tos and keepsakes. Keep those things youfeel will honor the person, and put away ordonate the rest.• Strip the bedding completely. Many peo-ple dispose of the bedding, but do what

feels most comfortable.• Cleanse the room. Use any appropriatecleanser to wipe down the walls and floors, and the inside and outside of the furniture.• Clean the drapes or blinds. Dry-clean thedrapes, if you have any, or thoroughly cleanthe blinds or louvers.• Paint the room. Optional: Sometimes thecolor of the room is so strongly associatedwith the unhappiness, or challenge of thefinal days, that painting the room a differentcolor will dramatically change the energy.

What about the bed?The bed holds the energy of the person

who sleeps in it, which is why it is inadvis-able to buy a used bed, especially one froman unknown person. Sleeping in a bedwhere a death has occurred will oftenevoke a subtle and “weird” or uncomfort-

able feeling. However, if replacing the bedand mattress is economically impractical, perform a simple cleansing that will serveto balance the energy of both the bed andthe room, allowing for a renewal.

Use salt, rice, incense or light• Salt. Salt helps draw out “old” energy. Asmall mound of salt can be placed in eachof the four corners of the room and on themattress. Leave the salt until you completethe bedroom cleansing, disposing of it out-side the home afterward.

• Rice. Rice is thought to draw any oldenergy from the home’s interior outtoward the exterior. A traditionalfeng shui blessing uses rice. Startingoutside your front door, sprinkle riceon the outer perimeter of the home.

• Incense or Essential Oils. Choose ascent, such as lavender, sage, eucalyp-tus or mint, that you and your familyfind comforting and burn or disperseit in the room. Each of theseessences lends its special propertiesto the environment. Eucalyptus isespecially excellent relief for healingand for those going through grief-related challenges.

• Light. Light is a great cleanser. Open thedrapes and let the sunshine inside. Placeprisms or faceted orbs in the window, allowing rainbows of light to enter theroom and brighten the energy.

A shift of energyAfter you clear the deceased’s energy

from the room, it will feel quite different. Byclearing and cleansing a room, you enableeveryone in the home to more easily moveforward in life, carrying the good memoriesof your loved one in the most positive way.

Home improvementsthat will lift your soulNo matter how value conscious a

homeowner may be, few peopleever make a home improvement

simply to increase their house’s resale value.People also undertake home improve-ments to enhance their enjoyment of theirhome — or to fix a problem, which, in itsown way, is good for the soul, too.

When it comes to deciding how tospend your renovation dollars, some homeimprovements can boost both your spiritsand your home value. Here are someexamples.

Install a skylightThe health benefits of natural light are

well known. Not only does sunlight stimu-late the body’s production of Vitamin D, italso boosts brain levels of serotonin.Lower serotonin levels have been associat-ed with depression, decreased physicalenergy, increased appetite and elevateddesire for sleep. A lack of sunlight has longbeen associated with Seasonal AffectiveDisorder — something your dear oldgrandmother might have simply called “thewinter blues.”

And there’s another consideration withtoday’s tightly built and heavily insulatedhomes — indoor air quality. According tothe GREENGUARD EnvironmentalInstitute (www.greenguard.org), most ofour exposure to environmental pollutionoccurs by breathing the air indoors.

Adding a traditional or tubular skylight— to virtually any room in the house —brings more mood-boosting natural lightinto your home. It’s also a smart moneydecision. Energy-saving, solar-poweredfresh-air skylights, like those made by VeluxAmerica, can be opened to bring much-needed outside air into your home, pro-viding passive ventilation to reduce humid-ity and stale air, and reduce cooling andlighting costs.

Add a sunroomWhile you’re thinking about the benefits

of more natural light in your home, consideradding a sunroom. One of these light—filledretreats returns more than 46 percent ofthe initial cost when it’s time to sell yourhome, according to Remodeling Magazine’sCost vs. Value Report. In a 2012 survey by

the National Association of Home Builders,52 percent of builders rated sunrooms as“desirable” or “essential” — ranking themhigher than other specialty rooms like work-out rooms, dens or even media rooms.

Sunrooms can be a great way to makeyour small home feel much larger, withoutthe expense of a bigger, costlier addition. They also speak to our natural affinity forthe outdoors, allowing you to enjoy natureyear-round.

Upgrade your bathroomThe trend of bathrooms as a restive

oasis doesn’t show any signs of disappear-ing. If you doubt the popularity of luxurybathroom fittings, just visit the showerheadaisle in any home improvement store.Options include everything from rainfallshower heads to multi-jet contraptionsthat promise a spa-like experience in yourown shower stall. Add in jetted tubs andamenities like under-floor heating, and it’seasy to understand why real estate proscontinue to cite a great bathroom as amust-have for many buyers.

Clear things up withtips for organizing

BY KAREN NAKAMURA

Spring has finally arrived, and it’s time tostart spring-cleaning and evaluate andorganize your storage needs.

The first thing you should do is to make alist of everything you want to store. This listwill both help you determine how muchstorage space you need and ensure thatnothing gets lost once you start puttingthings away.

Shelving creates more storage easily. It canbe portable in the form of freestanding unitsor permanently attached to your walls. Easy-to-install, heavy-duty shelving can be pur-chased at just about any major home supplystore. Many of these units are designed sothat you can leave as much room betweenthe shelves as you like, making it easy to getlarger and smaller items onto the same unit.

One place for storing items you don’t usemuch is under the bed. Under-the-bed stor-age containers come in a variety of sizes andstyles, including ones with wheels for easyaccess and to protect hardwood floors fromscratches. You can also buy risers that elevateyour bed off the floor a few additional inchesto create more space.

Garage storage has become more effi-cient. You can purchase built-in storage cabi-nets with doors so the space looks clean andorderly. There are also modular systems thatenable you to choose what features are bestfor your needs, for example, hanging racksfor sports equipment and hooks for tools.

Most garages have pitched roofs to keeprainwater from collecting on top, and thisspace underneath is ideal for items you don’tuse on a daily or weekly basis. Store them onplatforms or racks that lower and raise either

electronically at the touch of a button orwith an easy-to-use pulley system.

In newer or renovated homes, a mud-room or drop zone is a very popular feature. This area often has built-in benches, hooksand bins to neatly tuck away jackets, garden-ing equipment and other items your familyuses frequently. Another common feature is

storage and charging stations for cell phones, tablets and other electronic equipment.

A great space can improve yourphysical, emotional and yes, evenyour financial health. For almost a

year now, I’ve been sharing tips on beauti-fying and simplifying your space to impactthe first two. Today I want to focus on thethird.

In today’s competitive economic climate, setting yourself and your space apart isvery important. Whether you are a small-business owner, a large corporation or anemployee with your own cubicle, creatingan environment that inspires you and yourclients is going to help your future success.

I have two quick tips that are easy toimplement, no matter how big or smallyour space is. By pure coincidence, bothare drawn from commercial projectsinvolving hallways. Hallways can lead youplaces!

Tip 1: Inspiring statements make astatement. I’ve done several columnsrecently on the company-wide refresh of Y.Hata & Co.’s spaces. You saw the employeelounge, two lunchrooms and the receivingareas. In this photo, you see the impact that

a simple hallway can have. Here we put on a fresh coat of paint,

edited and decluttered furniture and otherthings, and added a takeoff on Gandhi’sfamous statement. “Be the change YOUwant to see” runs down the hallway in big, bold die-cut letters, with the “O” in YOU amirror hung at eye level to send a messageto employees at all levels: Look towardyourself to make a difference here.

What can you do? There are manystores around town where you can findinspirational messages to place in a lunch-room, hallway, bathroom or at the recep-tion desk. Or find a message you like on theInternet, blow it up and put it in a pictureframe. Let your employees and customersknow that improvement is a way of com-pany life.

Tip 2: Understand your clientele. 680Ala Moana Boulevard was another projectfrom which I shared photos and tips withyou. When Kamehameha Schools askedme to stage the affordable rental project’s

model unit, I first thought of whom I wasdesigning for — younger, urban, Starbuckscoffee in hand — and then aimed thedécor at them.

When they walked through the frontdoor, instead of vanilla white on the walls, they saw in the hallway a cool gray wall andaccessories that would speak to them: abench with a cute recycled newspaper dog,a driftwood wall plaque and a coat rackwhere I hung a man’s hat and a woman’sscarf.

If the space spoke to them, chances werehigher that they would want to live there.

So, think about who you are trying toattract to your business and be sure yourdecor and accessories are sending the rightmessage.

A company with electrifying serviceBY JACKIE M. YOUNG

Ron D. of Ron D Electrical ServiceLLC in Waipahu credits his mom andhis wife, Elizabeth, for giving him his

positive, generous attitude, and for helpinghim build his business into the success it istoday.

“Both my mom and dad came from thePhilippines, and they divorced when I wasvery young,” recounted Ron, “so my mom,who was a nurse and who had to work 12-hour shifts, basically raised me and my broth-er as a single parent. We were on welfare andgrew up with nothing.”

“So when I got my first job as an electricianand I found such work as digging trenches sophysically exhausting and wanted to quit, shewas the one who encouraged me to stickwith it, to give it a chance; the day-to-dayhardships I was experiencing as a youngworker were nothing compared to whatshe’d gone through to raise us alone.

“I found that very inspiring as I started myown business with only a two-man crew. I’mproud to say that we’ve now grown to 15,including office staff.”

Ron also looks for this sort of hard-work-ing, positive attitude in his electricians. “I can

teach anyone the trade, but not how to be ahard worker or to have a good attitude. Allmy guys are very reliable, responsible andeasy-going. I don’t even need to check onthem. And at least one worker has been with

me since the beginning, in 2005.” And hismother’s role model translates to Ron’s com-mitment to community service and concernfor the customer. “I think it was in 2007 thatwe donated about $25,000 in labor, vehicles

and materials to the TV show ExtremeMakeover Home Edition for a home in Kalihi,”recalled Ron. “We worked non-stop, from 10p.m. on Wednesday to noon on Saturday, crawling under the house in the rain!”

“Then in 2012 we donated about$6,000 in time and materials to HUGS(Help, Understanding & Group Support),which assists families with seriously ill chil-dren, for lighting in its parking lot.“Sometimes people need help and you justhave to give from the heart.”

Ron D. is also concerned when he hearsabout customers not being treated fairly, suchas being charged $1,500 to $1,700 per solarpanel. (Ron normally only charges $1,100 perpanel and is having a special during themonth of March that discounts that priceeven further to only $950.)

As 1st Class Solar, Ron’s company usesonly the best materials — Solar World panels(“the most efficient panels out there”) andEnphase inverters, both with 25-year war-ranties.

Spring into action fora solution to termitesA change of seasons brings many

things in Hawaii, but the leastfavorite event that occurs during

spring is the beginning of swarm season fordrywood and subterranean termites. Whentermite colonies reach a certain size, swarmers are released to build newcolonies. The only positive part of this is thatvery few swarmers actually live long enoughto make it into a crack or hole in a piece ofwood to shed their wings, pair up to mateand begin a new colony of termites.

Once drywood termites get into a piece ofwood, it takes about three years to produceenough offspring and eat enough wood toexcrete an amount of fecal pellets that willend up being exposed and showing that acolony exists.

Akamai Pest Solutions has been treatinghomes, doctors offices, condominium proj-

ects and schools, buildings for the Universityof Hawaii, the state and federal government, care homes and so many unique structuresfor nine years throughout the state. It offers asafer method to treat drywood termite infes-tations — orange oil.

People are realizing the dangers of tentfumigation and that it’s not always 100 per-cent effective. The biggest draw to the safermethod is that people do not have stay in ahotel, bag food, risk roof and solar damage orhire a security guard to protect their homes.

XT-2000 Orange Oil is an organic productthat has a capillary affect when wood is treat-ed with it. This means it travels through theinfested wood for days so that termites can-not escape it. It will kill adults as well as ter-mite eggs, which fumigation will not, so thereis less risk for re-infestation.

Customers can be in the structure when

it is being treated and it only leaves behinda pleasant orange smell for a day or so. It issafer for children, pets and those who havehealth and mobility issues.

The process begins with a thorough inspec-tion of your home or business before treat-ment. Akamai provides a warranty with all ofits orange oil treatments. An average home will

take one to two hours to inspect and a mini-mum of four hours to treat. The treatmenttime depends on the size of the structure andhow much infestation is present.

The company also provides ground treat-ment service, but uses a regular liquid termiti-cide because the orange oil will not leave thenecessary residual for a long warranty.

How to pace your window projectsW ith spring here, we start thinking

about fun projects as well asnecessary upkeep, like protect-

ing against heavy wind and rains that causepeeling paint, broken windows and more. But where do we begin?

Obviously we would all love to accom-plish these goals before summer is up, butfor many of us, time constraints and budg-ets force us to pick the important projectfirst, which oftentimes is windows.

As you start looking for window springspecials, remember what the old timerssay: “Be careful; you get what you pay for.”With renovations, this often translates todealing with fly-by-night unlicensed con-tractors, discontinued products lines orproducts that have defects and unsuitableparts that you can live with until they, ofcourse, break and malfunction. It couldalso mean you have products labeled withthe infamous “Hawaii clause,” meaning nowarranty on your parts within 10 miles ofthe ocean; most homes in Hawaii are.

So how do you do it right so it will lastand get the right materials and installationsfor our Hawaiian climate? Pace your win-dow project!

Make a list of the worst side of thehouse and move around to the best side

to determine what is critical to repair. Many find that not all sides are bad and ifthis is the case, taking your renovationsone side at a time, starting with the worstwindows, could free up some of the budg-et for other pressing projects — possiblyaround the failing windows themselves.

When considering window types, remember their most important functions:ventilation, heat reduction, water and noiseabatement. If you have old jalousies thatare failing, before changing to a new win-dow type, consider a Breezway louverwindow system that has all the benefits of

jalousies when open and none of thedrawbacks when closed. If you havejalousies, your home was designed for pas-sive cooling. If you reduce the ventilation inyour home by 50 percent — which sliders, awnings and hung windows will do —your free air will be gone and you mighthave to start paying for more air condi-tioning.

Breezway louvers are watertight, air-tight, noise-tight and achieve high hurri-cane performance ratings while offeringsafety and security options not readilyavailable with other window types.Breezway locally manufacturers and offersa competitive, “no Hawaii clause” warranty. If you are concerned about doing only afew windows at a time, rest assured thatBreezway has been manufacturing win-dows for more than 65 years worldwidewith more than 25 years of service inHawaii.

A simple plan to make sureyour solar investment lastsA lternate Energy has an important reminder for any-

one considering solar : if choosing the right installeris important, choosing the right module manufac-

turer is crucial.Bruce Ekimura, founder and owner of Alternate Energy

Inc., said the recent shakeout in the solar panel manufactur-ing industry reaffirms the wisdom of his company’s long-term alliance with Mitsubishi Electric. The global electronicsleader and its premium solar modules are here to stay, backed by solid warranties, a well-diversified base and gen-erations of research and development.

“Mitsubishi modules are here for the long haul,” Brucesaid. “There’s a reason Mitsubishi has always been a highlyvalued and respected brand name in Hawaii — they’veearned it.”

Alternate Energy is a Mitsubishi Elite Dealer, and last yearachieved the international distinction of Mitsubishi ElectricCertified Installer. The criteria are so stringent that AlternateEnergy is the only PV company in the world outside ofJapan with this high honor. The partnership includes regularinstaller trainings and ongoing education conducted byMitsubishi engineers at Alternate Energy headquarters, ensuring that the high-quality modules are always installedwith the highest expertise.

The product has been so well received in Hawaii that,Bruce warned, some less-reputable contractors are spread-ing rumors that Mitsubishi is planning to halt shipment tothe U.S. — an absolute falsehood.

Perry Rosensweig, business development manager forMitsubishi Electric USA Inc.’s Photovoltaic Division, assured that “Mitsubishi Electric has been a leader inthe solar industry for over 30 years. Our company willcontinue to facilitate the success of our customers byproviding the most productive and reliable solar mod-ules in the industry. Mitsubishi Electric is resolute in itscommitment to our customers now and in the future.”

Bruce said, “Our customers tell me it feels good toknow they are working with a longtime, establishedlocal company and proven manufacturers when theymake this all-important investment for their home orbusiness. We appreciate that. We’ll keep doing the rightthing for our Hawaii residents by bringing in a productthey can count on, installing it exceptionally well andproviding the finest customer service throughout theentire process.”

Designing a dreamkitchen on a budgetIs the most important room in the

house, your kitchen, in dire need of amakeover? Take this quiz to find out:

• Do you become physically ill from thedated cabinets, counters and tile everytime you enter the kitchen? • Does your collection of take-out boxesexceed your number of plates?• Has National Geographic contacted youseeking an “Undiscovered Relics” tour ofyour kitchen?• Does your family pet growl, attack or hissat any of the appliances because the appli-ance growls first?• Do your kids use your kitchen as adumping ground for unwanted items?• Does your fridge require a Hazmat suitto open it?

If you answered “yes” to any of theabove questions, it’s time to remodel.Although taking on a project like a kitchenremodel may seem daunting, all a remodeltakes is good planning. You don’t have tohave a Trump sized bankroll to finance theremodel either. Try these hints to save you

big on the costly items:

Buy pre-fabricated slabsBuying raw slabs can cost upwards of

$20-$75 per square foot, and that typical-ly does not include fabrication. A pre-fab-ricated slab already has the edge detail, iscabinet-depth and usually comes with a 6inch splash to match. Pre-fabricated slabscost from $200 to $450 per slab and areready to be installed.

New cabinets are possibleYears ago, renovating a kitchen on a

budget meant keeping your existing cabi-nets and adding a coat of paint to them. These days, cabinets are much moreaffordable and are available in all sorts ofstyles and colors.

Don’t forget the hardwareA simple way to refresh your kitchen

can be as easy as changing out the knobsand pulls on your cabinet doors anddrawers. With endless finish options aswell as styles, the look of your kitchen canchange dramatically with a simple

upgrade of the hardware.

Energy-efficient appliances can savein the long run

While new appliances can appear cost-ly up front, the money you could save ifthey are energy efficient could save youmore later on. Refrigerators, dishwashersand hoods all have energy-efficientoptions. Look for the Energy Star label.

Still need help? Come in to HawaiiHome Expo at 2933 Koapaka St. and askfor a friendly sales associates. G&S SHUTTER DESIGNS APRIL 14 • 2013 21

APRIL 14, 2013 • 21

One of the great things aboutliving in Hawaii is being ableto enjoy natural light year-

round. Yet few of us want the sun’srays streaming into our homes full-force all day long. We want to be ableto control the amount of outside illu-mination entering our houses.Plantation shutters are ideal for thispurpose.

Long popular in the Islands, high-quality shutters offer benefits overalternatives such as curtains. Unlikecurtains, shutters allow you to varythe amount of sunlight comingthrough windows without compro-mising privacy. Shutters are also veryeasy to keep clean and maintain, requiring little more than a quick wipewith a damp cloth to remove dirt,

dust and grime. One of the best shutter options are

Polycore Plantation Shutters offeredby G&S Shutter Designs.

“I have seen a lot of plantationshutters and I believe the quality ofour Polycore shutter is unmatched,”said Gavin Shibuya, owner of G&SShutter Designs. “The unique designof our shutter is different than all theother shutters out there and thestructural strength of our product isunbeatable.”

Polycore shutters are the world’sonly solid synthetic plantation shut-ters with a co-extruded aluminumcore. This makes it among the mostdurable shutters on the market. Theyare both fire-retardant and moisture-resistant, making them impervious to

the elements. These shutters are sodurable G&S Shutter Designs guaran-tees Polycore Plantation Shutters willnever warp, crack, chip or peel. “Westopped selling all the other windowcoverings because we knew we hadan excellent shutter that was reallyhigh-quality that we could sell at abetter price than most of the compe-tition,” said Shibuya. “The elegant look, functionality and durability sets theplantation shutters apart from allother window coverings.”

G&S Shutter Designs is a local firmwith a very hands-on approach. “Mybusiness partner Shaun Harada and Ihandle every part of the process fromthe sales to the installation,” saidShibuya. “We are the owners of thecompany and we take pride in our

work and we make sure ourcustomers are satisfied.”Despite being a small compa-ny, G&S Shutter Designs hastackled some big projects, including Kahala Nui and St.Francis Hospice. The companyis currently working with KaMakana at Hoakalei, a newdevelopment in Ewa Beach.

Even with such large-scaleprojects, G&S Shutter Designsremains focused on servingOahu homeowners. “We haveawesome customer service, some of the best pricing outthere and a unique qualityplantation shutter which webelieve every home shouldhave,” said Shibuya.

Sorting through allyour flooring optionsDo you want new flooring and have

been looking around for weeks, months, even years, but are con-

fused by the multitude of flooring productsand manufacturers out there? If so, you arenot alone. One thing is for sure when itcomes to flooring in Hawaii — the marketis very competitive and there are numer-ous choices for products and installers. Then you have salespeople, many of whomdo not have good product knowledge, thatcome at you with confusing facts, figuresand pressure to buy. It’s enough to make aperson say, “I’ll stick with my 20 year-oldcarpet for a little longer.”

But there is help. If you are building new, remodeling or just freshening up, Shirley PaiHilton of Kahala Pacific Floors would like tohelp you with some unbiased informationon products and installation so that youcan make the right choice for the personthat matters here — you.

According to Hilton, the first thing toremember is to always buy quality in yourprice range. The old adage of getting whatyou pay for applies doubly in a competitivemarket. Vendors will try to get your atten-

tion and money by offering an amazinglylow price, but that’s because they didn’tpay much for it either.

What is usually sacrificed is hardinessand longevity. What good does it do if youhave to buy another floor in just a fewyears? No one is saying to purchase a realwood floor when you can’t afford it, but doshop for a good quality laminate to giveyou years of satisfaction. Always look for agood warranty on materials, 25 years forhome use should be readily available.

Another piece of advice from Hilton isto always look for integrity with the com-pany you are dealing with. You may have awritten contract, but good customer serv-ice is usually not one of the listed contrac-tual obligations. Probably the best way tofind a good flooring company or product isto ask your friends, relatives and neighbors

about their own experiences and endorse-ments. When you narrow it down, lookinto who the owner is and what his or herbackground is. Ask the company if they canprovide a list of references. Yelp.com andother consumer websites are also goodsources of information. You can also doyour own sleuthing with a quick check onGoogle.

It is also interesting to note that good, knowledgeable sales people are a directreflection of the company’s openness andattention to detail. A salesperson should beable to offer you good information that willhelp you make an informed decision.Always walk away from high pressure,

badgering salespeople who call or text youincessantly. They definitely don’t have yourbest interests at heart.

And Hilton said that even before youventure out into the Hawaii flooring forest, get a basic education by attending herWood and Stone Flooring 101 seminar, now held monthly due to popular demand. The 90-minute session has been attendedby hundreds of Hawaii consumers whoalways talk about how much they enjoyedit and how much they learned.
