Martin Luther

Few men or women can be described as having "changed the history of the world." However, Martin Luther is one of these rare people. An energetic and charismatic German born in 1483, the Father of the Reformation stands shoulder to shoulder with the giants of history.

His influence spread through Western Europe and, with European settlers, to the United States. Lutheran communities scattered across America are all direct beneficiaries of Luther's legacy.

Join LutherCountry in celebrating the LutherDecade! Follow in Luther's footsteps and travel to the cities where he lived, worked, and preached; trace the Protestant religion back to its roots and discover the towering personality behind the Great Reformer.

Reason 1: The Word

In the beginning there was the Word, but it wasn't until Martin Luther translated the Bible into German while at the Wartburg Castle (UNESCO World Heritage Site) in Eisenach that the Word became accessible to the common man. Here, you can visit the room where Luther completed this great work. ( page 11)

Reason 2: Off the beaten path

What better way to commemorate a great visionary than by striking off into unknown lands? Take off down the Luther Trail, which passes through Schmalkalden and other LutherCities, connecting many of the locations within LutherCountry. ( page 19)

Reason 3: Medieval marvels

LutherCountry is home to many romantic Medieval cities filled with typical half-timbered houses. Muehlhausen and Quedlinburg are two sterling examples, inviting you to travel back in time and wander streets hundreds of years old. ( page 17)

Reason 4: Feel the thunder

In Martin Luther's experience, God's voice indeed "thundereth marvelously", as it did for Job; after being caught in a thunderstorm, Luther faced his own mortality and devoted his life to God. In Erfurt, you can visit the Augustinian Monastery where Luther served as a monk. ( page 11)

Reason 5: Fine art

Bach, Cranach, Wagner, and Luther: these great men all shared one great passion – the arts. Through their respective mediums, each of them left their mark on LutherCountry and Weimar in particular, which is also famous for its UNESCO sites. ( page 23)

Reason 6: The circle of life

Martin Luther's life both began and ended in Lutherstadt Eisleben. He gave the last sermon of his life in St. Andrew's Church, and Luther's Birthplace and Death House can still be visited to this day. A visit to Luther's Parents' Home in nearby Mansfeld-Lutherstadt will bring your Luther adventure full-circle. ( page 11)

Reason 7: The 95 theses

Come to Lutherstadt Wittenberg and visit the Castle Church upon whose doors Luther nailed his 95 theses almost 500 years ago! Or visit the Melanchthon House and learn more about Martin Luther's formidable "right-hand man", Philipp Melanchthon. ( page 11)

Reason 8: Artistic inspiration

Martin Luther's work had a strong influence on the arts and one artist in particular – Lucas Cranach the Elder. Cranach was a strong supporter of Luther and several of his most important works are on display in the Anhalt Picture Gallery in Dessau. ( page 24)

Reason 9: The death mask

Luther often went to Halle (Saale) to preach and the city is nowadays home to a very special artifact – Martin Luther's death mask. The death mask is kept safe in the city's Market Church. Step inside and take a look at the original cast of Luther's face and hands. ( page 17)

Reason 10: Gothicism

Luther attended boarding school in Magdeburg and the city became a leader in the Reformation. Magdeburg's history spans even further back, with a Gothic cathedral dating back over 1,000 years. ( page 17)

The Luther Connection

Considering Martin Luther's impact on the course of history, it comes as no surprise that many cultural highlights have direct ties to him and the Reformation. Some are even on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Lutherstadt Wittenberg -

The Luther House

The Luther House was home to Martin Luther and his family for almost 35 years. The house now boasts the original “Lutherstube”, or Luther Room, and the largest museum of Reformation history worldwide. The exhibition "Martin Luther: life, work and legacy" features over 1,000 items, such as Luther's monk habit and bible.

Our tip: The exhibition in the house basement offers a rare look into the personal life of the Great Reformer. Learn more about his wife, how she ran their household, and see scenes from the Luther family's everyday life.

Lutherstadt Eisleben -

Luther's Birthplace & Death House

The memorial buildings of Luther's Birthplace and Death House are now both museums that allow guests to journey back to his roots.

Our tip: Luther was baptized in Lutherstadt Eisleben and an original baptismal font, dating all the way back to 1518, is a must-see part of the Luther's Birthplace exhibition.

Eisenach - Wartburg Castle

The Wartburg Castle promises to fulfill all the romantic expectations one can have of a true German fortress. Founded around 1067, this castle houses a museum brimming with unique relics dating back to the Middle Ages. The Castle played a pivotal role in the success of the Reformation, as it was within these walls that Martin Luther hid from those against him, during which time he translated the New Testament into German.

Our tip: Visit the original room in which Luther completed his translations and soak in an atmosphere alive with religious and historical significance.

Erfurt - Augustinian Monastery

Martin Luther first dedicated his life to God here, joining the order as a monk in July 1505. The monastery itself was also influenced by Luther's Reformation and became home to the Lutheran parish of St. John's in 1525.

Our tip: The monastery's important role in Luther's life is now honored by the "Bible – Monastery – Luther" exhibition. Come see original prayer cells, the historical library, and other artifacts from Luther's time in Erfurt.

Weimar

With three UNESCO World Heritage Sites featuring over 16 UNESCO objects, Weimar is southern LutherCountry's veritable cultural crown jewel. Its three Bauhaus buildings were added to the list in 1996, and another 13 sites from "Classical Weimar" were declared UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Sites in 1998.

The Classic Foundation of Weimar comprises over 20 of Weimar's most distinct cultural highlights, ranging from museums, palaces, and parks to various literary and art collections. These highlights include historical buildings like the Goethe House, Schiller's Home, and the Duchess Anna Amalia Library, as well as outdoor gems like the Park on the River Ilm or the Belvedere Palace.

Our tip: To stand in the beautiful Rococo Hall of the Duchess Anna Amalia Library amidst books and stunning works of art is an absolute must while in Weimar. The library also boasts a magnificent Luther Bible from 1534. Due to a limited number of guests allowed, groups should reserve their tickets well in advance.

Lutherstadt Wittenberg: Castle Church and St. Mary's Church

According to legend, it was onto the Lutherstadt Wittenberg Castle Church doors that Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses, thus sparking the Revolution. The original doors have since been replaced with memorial doors of bronze, an impressive tribute to an act that changed the course of history.

St. Mary's Church is the oldest building in Lutherstadt Wittenberg and is home to the stunning Reformation Altar created by the famous Reformation artist, Lucas Cranach the Elder.

Our tip: Be sure to visit the graves of Martin Luther and fellow Reformation champion, Phillip Melanchthon, at the Castle Church. Should you be at St. Mary's Church between May and October, be sure to sit in on a Saturday evening service – all in English!

Halle (Saale): Francke Foundations

The Francke Foundations was founded by August Hermann Francke in 1698 and served as orphanage, school, and center for scientific research. Today, it is also famous for its Cabinet of Artifacts and Curiosities, which is said to be Germany's oldest museum. The Cabinet of Artifacts and Curiosities remains true to its original layout from 1741; with unlabeled artifacts lining the shelves of different cases, the museum places the importance on the collection as a whole, rather than on the relevance of individual pieces.

Our tip: The Francke Foundations is part of the cultural experience “Kulturhäuptlinge”, or “Culture Chiefs”. This ever-changing series of events presents seven cultural feathers that make Halle (Saale) a cultural citadel and will crown you as a cultural chief. Join us at any time of year in celebrating culture with plenty of exciting highlights.

Halle (Saale): Nebra Sky Disc

The State Museum of Prehistory in Halle (Saale) is home to the Nebra Sky Disc, which was discovered near Nebra in 1999 and has been included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register since 2013. The Nebra Sky Disc dates back to the Bronze Age and is one of the earliest known depictions of the heavens as we know them today. Some 3,600 years old, the disc is made of bronze and covered in gold leaf decorations. In addition to the Nebra Sky Disc, the State Museum of Prehistory displays artifacts that date all the way back to the Early Stone Age, some of which are up to 370,000 years old.

Our tip: The State Museum of Prehistory is just one of four fascinating highlights available on the "Sky Paths" tourist route. This route runs through northern LutherCountry and takes you to four archaeologically significant sites, making stops in Halle (Saale), Nebra, Goseck, and Langeneichstädt.

Erfurt: Merchants' Bridge

The Merchants' Bridge, or "Krämerbrücke", in Erfurt exudes a quaint, cobblestoned charm that invites one to linger and wander through the various shops. Built in 1325, the Merchants' Bridge runs over the Gera River and is lined on both sides with houses, deceiving visitors into believing that it isn't a bridge at all. Indeed, it can only be recognized as a bridge when being viewed from the banks of the river. The Merchants' Bridge is the longest series of inhabited buildings on any bridge in Europe, and one could argue that the delicious Goldhelm "Merchants' Bridge Praline" and the shops' handcrafted items are the best of their kind anywhere.

Our tip: For the perfect aerial view of the Merchants' Bridge, climb the tower of the Aegidien Church on the bridge's eastern end. The church is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Erfurt: Old Synagogue and Jewish Heritage

The Old Synagogue in Erfurt is one of the few preserved Medieval synagogues still in existence in all of Europe. Built during the Middle Ages, much of the original structure still stands and is within walking distance from the Merchants' Bridge. The building was restored and eventually reopened in 2009, along with an exhibition of breathtaking Medieval treasures comprising currency and jewelry of the most resplendent silver and gold.

Our tip: The "Pièce de résistance" of the Old Synagogue's collection of treasure is arguably the famous, intricately designed Jewish wedding ring. As there are only two other rings similar in the world, be sure to see this sparkling piece of history on display in the Synagogue's basement.

When traveling to a new country, region or city, our perceptions,

moods, and emotions are directly, even if unknowingly, influenced by

the architectural style of the buildings.

A towering, marble cathedral can impart a majestic air to the city below, whereas cobblestoned streets lined with half-timbered houses hundreds of years old can produce an atmosphere instantly quaint, cozy, and inviting.

The various architectural styles found in LutherCountry testify to its long and rich history; half-timbered houses, Medieval castles and city centers, Gothic cathedrals, and Romanesque buildings all combine to create a warm, varied, and rich historical feel. Come and be moved by myriad buildings that have stood the test of time and still stand in all their former glory.

The Luther Connection

Luther House Schmalkalden

Schmalkalden is one of LutherCountry's half-timbered gems; an impressive example of this architectural style is the Luther House. Built around 1520, this building witnessed meetings of the Schmalkaldic League and the publication of Luther's Schmalkaldic Articles. Another definite must-see is the Wilhelmsburg Castle and its fascinating Reformation exhibition!

Luther House Eisenach

Eisenach is home to one of southern LutherCountry’s oldest and most beautiful half-timbered houses: the Luther House. Set to reopen mid-2015, its intriguing exhibition shows Martin Luther as a schoolboy, Bible translator, church teacher, and educator of the people. Another architectural highlight is the impressive Wartburg Castle and its unique mix of Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles.

Magdeburg: The Romanesque Road

Follow one of Germany's most beloved tourist trails, forming a figure eight through northern LutherCountry. Embark on a journey through the Middle Ages; fairytale scenery is made complete with myriad monasteries, town churches, great cathedrals, and awe-inspiring castles, all built between 950 and 1250. This trail converges in the middle at Magdeburg and passes through Lutherstadt Eisleben, highlighting the St. Mary's of Helfta Convent.

Our tip: Stop by the Romanesque Art Center and Romanesque Road Info Center in Magedeburg and dive into the everyday life, beliefs, and customs of the Middle Ages through interactive exhibitions.

Gothic Style

This architectural style evolved from the Romanesque style and is characterized by its use of pointed arches. Must-see examples include:

St. Maurice & St. Katharine Cathedral, Magdeburg

This imposing cathedral is the oldest in Germany and one of the tallest in eastern Germany. Originally a catholic church, the cathedral was ultimately influenced by the Reformation and held its first Protestant service in 1567.

Market Church, Halle (Saale)

This late-Gothic construction is truly unique; built from 1529-1554, it combined two churches, thus resulting in the 4-tower anomaly that defines Halle's skyline.

Our tip: Be sure to make time for the highlights waiting within: Martin Luther's death mask and Handel's baptismal font!

Bauhaus

The Bauhaus School was founded in Weimar in 1919 and functioned as a school for the arts for 14 years, moving to Dessau in 1925 and finally to Berlin from 1932-1933. Today, Bauhaus is famous for its original, simplistic approach to artistic and architectural design.

Visit the Bauhaus Museum in Weimar before heading to Dessau to see the original Bauhaus Building and Masters' Houses, all of which have earned themselves an important name in the history of modern architecture and as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Church Music and Johann Sebastian Bach

"Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world." – Martin Luther

Luther introduced the idea that worship should be essentially musical; 200 years later, this idea inspired the great Johann Sebastian Bach, whose Lutheran beliefs resulted in some of the world’s finest choral music. Born in Eisenach, Bach also lived in Muehlhausen, Arnstadt, and Weimar, and played the Divi-Blasii and Palace Church organs. Eisenach's St. George's Church still houses Bach's original baptismal font, and the city's Bach House Museum offers a unique, hands-on musical experience.
