How to do the Evaluating Questions
Paper 22009
Lesson Objective I will be given the opportunity to continue to
develop my skills in answering the evaluating questions in paper 2.
Evaluating Questions – C Sources
Always examine/study/read the C source first.
When carrying this out consider the following;
1. What is the title of the C source? 2. What is on the X/Y axis of the graph? 3. What is the survey about? 4. What does the bar graph/line
graph/survey etc. show?
Evaluating Questions – A/B Sources
After examining/studying the relevant C sources go and read the related written source A or B.
When reading consider look for a quote that is related to the information you have found in C source.
“To what extent” question – part of the quote will be supported by the C source and part of it will be opposed by the C source.
“Exaggeration” question – this quote will over state the case and the evidence from the C Source will show this to be the case.
Question 1 Use only Source C1(a), C1(b) and
Source A. To what extent does the evidence
support Avril Beattie? 3
The question is asking how much does the evidence support Avril Beattie?
Q1 - Source C1a The source is about number of women in senior management
The bar graph is showing a trend that women are under represented in senior management
Q1 – Source C1b
The bar graph is comparing the gender pay gap across a range of countries.
The source is about the gender pay gap in the EU.
Source A Read Source A and look for the following in
one quote; The number of women in senior management
(C1a)The gender pay gap across countries (C1b).
Once you find the quote you should; Write the quote out in full Say what part of the quote is correct Say what part of the quote is incorrect.
Q1 Model Answer Avril Beattie states, “The percentage of women
in senior management in the public services is well below that of men, so it comes as no surprise that the UK has the largest gender pay gap in the European Union.” (Write the quote out in full to get the mark).
Source C1a shows she is correct as the number of women in senior management in the public services is well below that of men.
Source C1b shows she is incorrect as it shows Cyprus and Germany each have a larger gender pay gap than the UK.
Question 2a Use only Source C2 and Source A. Why might Avril Beattie be accused of
exaggeration? 2
The question is asking why might Avril Beattie be accused of lying?
Q2 - Source C2a
What are female views on obstacles to a successful career?
What is the survey about?
Source ARead Source A and look for the following in
one quote; Comment about female opinions about
obstacles to a successful career.
Once you find the quote you should; Write the quote out in full Say why the quote is exaggerated using
evidence from the C source.
Q2a Model Answer Avril Beattie claims, “Well over half of
women say that having children is the biggest obstacle they face in pursuing a successful career.” (Write the quote out in full to get the mark).
She is exaggerating because Source C2 (a) shows only 48% of women claim this to be the case.
Task Ten minutes to complete question 2(b) and 3. Remember the stages of reading are;
C sources Followed by the written source A or B
Writing the answer; Quote in full from source A or B. “To what extent” - one piece of evidence from the
C source that shows the quote is correct and one piece of evidence from the C source that shows the quote is incorrect.
“Exaggeration” – one piece of evidence from the C source that shows the quote is exaggerated.
Q2b Model Answer Jim Waugh states, “More girls than boys are
going into both full time higher/further education and employment.”
He is correct because Source C2 (b) shows that over 60% of girls are going into HE/FE compared to 45% of boys.
However he is incorrect about employment as Source C2 (b) shows more boys than girls are going into employment after leaving school.
Q3 Model Answer Jim Waugh claims, “The UK has an
excellent equal opportunities record with one of the highest percentages of women in senior management in the world.”
He is exaggerating because Source C3 shows the UK does not have one of the highest percentages of women in senior management, in fact it is one of the lowest.
