Our education system.

2

Page 5: How to Design a Super School

We have a massive opportunity to make a difference for every single young person growing up in America.

3

Page 6: How to Design a Super School

4

The challenges in our world are changing faster than ever…

Page 7: How to Design a Super School

5

and our schools are failing to prepare students to meet those challenges.

Page 8: How to Design a Super School

6

According to U.S. Census Bureau, our states put 26–40% of their budgets toward education.

And every day, we entrust our students to a system which is a total mystery.

Page 9: How to Design a Super School

7

This is the moment for us to take back the responsibility for educating our youth. To get involved.

To lead the way.

To rebuild our education system and build a better way of preparing young Americans for the future.

Page 10: How to Design a Super School

8

We can create hope.

Page 11: How to Design a Super School

9

It starts with people like

YOU.

Page 12: How to Design a Super School

16

Our shared ambition is to rethink the American high school. To transform this one-hundred-year-old institution.

16

Page 19: How to Design a Super School

17

To provide young Americans with the opportunities they deserve. For today, and—as important—for tomorrow.

17

Page 20: How to Design a Super School

18

To do this, we need a better definition of what kind of graduates our schools must produce—people who have deep mastery of the literacies.

Page 21: How to Design a Super School

19

And the skills and traitsthey need to thrive in the coming era.

Page 22: How to Design a Super School

20

We call this

Page 23: How to Design a Super School

21

A kind of X Factor for describing curious, nimble, resilient people who are truly prepared for our complex and uncertain world.

Page 24: How to Design a Super School

22

We are starting to see a new definition of what our schools must produce. We must develop these skills and traits—and others like them—so America can lead in a world that is uncertain, constantly changing, and yet also full of opportunity. It’s about our students being fully ready.

On this journey, you will likely speak with or work with young people who are under 18. It is important to respect the safety and privacy of minors. If you will be meeting with minors, be sure to get permission from their families first. Any materials in your application that feature the voices or images of young people need to be accompanied by a signed release.

IMPORTANT:

You can find release forms at the back of this book. You can find more information at xqsuperschool.org.

Building a super school—whether you participate in this challenge or not— is a journey that requires tenacity, courage, curiosity, and ingenuity.

It requires understanding the mindsets of the young people your school will serve. It requires challenging the status quo. It requires bold leadership.

To help you through the journey, the XQ Institute has put together a set of tools you and your team can use.

Page 38: How to Design a Super School

36

Designing a new school—especially one founded on a concept that challenges the norm—is an audacious goal. Taking on this challenge requires the concerted efforts of passionate, talented people.

Much of the talent you’ll need on your team can be found all around you. You can also recruit virtual members to your team. Your kit includes a few tools to help you think through casting your team.

If you need help connecting with experts or other committed people, you can search the XQ Community at xqsuperschool.org.

When you find the right Core Members, you’ll know it. However, your team of Close Collaborators will likely shift over time, depending on the changing needs of the project. Whenever your team needs additional help and expertise, use these tools to think about whose help you need.

Breakthrough 1

Casting your ideal team

What kind of know-how do we need on our team right now?

Could our team benefit from someone who shows up in a different way?

How can we amp up the energy and creativity of our team?

Who can help us get more done— as a team and in the community?

Every community has the talent to design a super school. We just have to find it.

CASTING OUR TEAM

CORE MEMBERSThe people who will stick with our team from start to finish—determined, dedicated, daring.

38

At the beginning of this journey, perhaps even before your team is fully assembled, you may have some initial ideas about the kind of school you want to design.

Before you get underway, capture your initial ideas on the OUR SCHOOL CONCEPT WORKSHEET in your kit. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to refine your concept, so don’t worry about filling out every blank right away.

By November 15, share your initial concept at xqsuperschool.org so the XQ judges can confirm the eligibility of your super school idea.

Breakthrough 2

Choosing an initial concept for your school

Page 41: How to Design a Super School

What aspects of the American education system do we think are imperative to fix?

What population of young people are we passionate about helping?

What do we think needs to be done differently in a school built for the future?

This is the story of the super school we will build.OUR SCHOOL

CONCEPTOur super school will be called:

A bold and compelling idea will be at the center of our school:

To ensure our school truly serves the needs of the community, we plan to get input from young people by: [How will you find out what young people think? How will you learn what they are looking for in a future school? What have you learned so far?]

To get insights into how we can prepare our students for postsecondary education and the future of work, we plan to: [How will you get input from educators, employers, higher education, and other constituencies about the knowledge and competencies students need?]

Our school will also build on the inspiring examples, research, and ideas of others:[What are 2-3 resources, from the XQ website or elsewhere, that you would encourage everyone in the community to read/watch, and why?]

THE INSIGHTS WE WILL SEEK OUT:

We are: Our school will be organized as a:

THE POWERFUL LEARNING EXPERIENCES WE WILL CREATE:

THE TEAM THAT WILL MAKE OUR SCHOOL REAL:

All the elements of our school will come together as powerful learning experiences for students. [Describe 4-6 core experiences that exemplify what it will mean to be a learner at your school, and especially how students will be encouraged to take ownership of their learning.]

We need a team to make our school real. Our current team is: [Who are the members of your current team?]

A school should be built first and foremost to serve its students and their learning needs.

To create a super school that’s innovative, engaging, and prepares students for a thriving future, you need to understand your students. Their needs, aspirations, and dreams for the future. The latest science on how youth learn. The latest data on the community and how it’s serving its students now.

Your kit includes tools to help you learn about the community you want to serve and how well (or poorly) the education system is working for young people growing up there.

Also, be sure to explore the rich resources in the DISCOVER modules online at xqsuperschool.org.

Breakthrough 3

Understanding young people and their learning goals

Page 43: How to Design a Super School

What does an engaging, high-quality learning environment for young people look like?

What are young people in the community saying about their futures?

Based on what we have read, watched, and heard about how people learn, what ideas most excite and inspire us?

Based on what we’ve discovered, what kind of school are we excited to create?

LOCAL CHALLENGES:What did you hear from local experts about teaching and the future of work? What are the challenges you most want to solve?Application Question: What are your top three insights about the challenges facing your prospective students in the 21st century, both globally and in the community?

OUR EXCITING IDEAS:Based on what you’ve discovered, what kind of school are you excited to create? What is your radical idea?

WHAT YOUTH VOICES ARE SAYING:What do young people in the community say about their uncertainties about the future? What have you learned about their aspirations?Application Question: What are your top three insights from young people about how they experience school and learning in their lives, and about how they see their education and career opportunities for the future?

HOW YOUNG PEOPLE LEARN:Think about what you have read, watched, and heard about how people learn. What ideas most excite and inspire you?Application Question: What are your top three insights about how young people learn—the insights you’re most passionate about bringing to life in your school?

Explore the landscape of education and the realities of the community your school will serve.

Look at the realities of your community. What do you see?

Explore new research on how people learn. What ideas excite and inspire you?

At the heart of your school is an original, groundbreaking idea (or set of ideas) that makes what you’re doing truly unique. These are the ideas that inspire you, that will shape the student experience, that will get young people excited about attending, that enable your school to help students achieve their dreams.

After discovering all you can about the community your school will serve, reflect back on your school concept. Do you need to reshape your concept to better meet the needs of young people? Craft a powerful mission statement that clarifies what your team wants to achieve.

Breakthrough 4

Articulating what makes your school unique

Page 45: How to Design a Super School

43

What are the most important things our school needs to do for young people?

How will we develop a culture that guides the direction of our school?

How should we describe the mission of our school to the world?

Use what you discovered to design a super school for young people in the community.

Propose an innovative school model. How will you describe your school to others in the community?

Put yourself in a student’s shoes. How will learning be different, more rigorous, exciting? How will their learning experiences prepare them for the challenges of the 21st century? How will students take charge of their learning? How will students connect with their community and the wider world?

In addition to its core mission, every school is defined by the learning experiences of its students. The everyday experiences of students shape the development of their knowledge, their sense of identity, their creativity, and their sense of ownership over their learning.

Too many schools are boring. Too many schools don’t speak to students in ways that have meaning for them. So it’s critical that learning experiences be both engaging and instructive—that’s part of the point of redesigning high school.

This is no easy task, so your kit includes a couple great tools to help you dive into a creative process for innovating and designing compelling experiences.

Breakthrough 5

Crafting transformative learning experiences

Page 47: How to Design a Super School

How might teachers at our school inspire young people to want to learn more outside the classroom?

What learning experiences would young people be eager to dive into?

How can we design learning experiences so that students learn through teaching each other?

Use what you discovered to design a super school for young people in the community.

Propose an innovative school model. How will you describe your school to others in the community?

Schools, like people, are not islands. Every school is an integral part of its community. High school, in particular, is a stepping stone to college and to future career opportunities. Whatever path a student chooses, they will benefit from going to a school that creates many pathways for them to experience the wider world.

To create pathways that generate richer learning experiences for all young people, your school needs strong partnerships with other organizations in the community. Local colleges. Employers who can provide work-study programs. Community-based organizations. Social networks. Past and present inspirational thought leaders from around the world.

Your kit includes a guide with a simple approach, to help you enlist the movers and shakers in the community your school will serve.

Breakthrough 6

Enlisting community participation
