HOW TO ASSEMBLE THE CALENDARIUM CULINARIUM You will need Tape Scissors Printer String Puncher S hooks About the calendar This calendar was designed for the ARC residency Culture of Permanence ‘2016. While mapping the actor networks in the city, we debated how to introduce a garden amidst the inhabitants of Romainmôtier. Our first step was to make people curious and in- terested in gardening. To take the knowledge we had gained from Daniel, the permaculture specialist in our team, the understanding of the routines of everyday life and the nature of the land, we proposed a calendarium culinarium. The calendar works as a domestic design object that aids you with gentle reminders on when to plant seeds and take care of your garden. The calendar essentially can be used like any other calendar, the difference being that this one is prepared with special attention and care for you and the nature around us. To use the calendar as a tool to maintain the garden, create your own rituals around it, such as striking out a task and writing your names after it’s completed. This way you use the cal- endar to fit your own household rhythms and make sure the work is shared and the plants remain healthy. In addition, we can suggest that you share the calendar with friends and family and encour- age them too to start a garden. About us This calendar was a collaboratively designed by Gosie Vervloessem, Aditya Pawar, Aurelio Kopainig, Daniel Varadi, Sally de Kunst, Felipe Duarte, Tanja Schwarz and Julien Vuilleumier.

About the calendarThis calendar was designed for the ARC residency Culture of Permanence ‘2016. While mapping the actor networks in the city, we debated how to introduce a garden amidst the inhabitants of Romainmôtier. Our first step was to make people curious and in-terested in gardening.

This way you use the cal-endar to fit your own household rhythms and make sure the work is shared and the plants remain healthy.

In addition, we can suggest that you share the calendar with friends and family and encour-age them too to start a garden. About usThis calendar was a collaboratively designed by Gosie Vervloessem, Aditya Pawar, Aurelio Kopainig, Daniel Varadi, Sally de Kunst, Felipe Duarte, Tanja Schwarz and Julien Vuilleumier.

Step 1Take prints of the 3 sections of the calender

Top SectionThe top section contains collages made around the conversations we had dur-ing the residency ‘Culture of Perma-nence’. It contains the sites, dialogues, metaphors through which we asked ourselves the question- What are we doing? Why is this work an example of a culture of permanence? What did we learn from this experience?

Found in the PDF with the file name: 1_Images list

Middle SectionThe middle section contains the month list. On the top left and left margins are planting and garden care-taking activities. This is to help you organise your daily and monthly activities and provide you with reminders when to do what.

Found in the PDF with the file name: 2_months list

Bottom SectionThis section informs you about the vegetables that grow in each month and season. This is so you can start preparing for that lovely home-grown meal!

Step 2Tape prints together so it forms a single

month-sheetNote: The top section does not come with each page strictly assigned to a month. You can choose which images you want for place for each month. The middle and bottom section, however, need to be aligned based on the month name written on the top of each page.

Step 3Stack the month-sheets in order from January

to December and punch holes at the top

Note: We used the punching machine to put the papers together, but you could use other methods such as stitching the pages together or stapling them. The method would depend on the thickness of each sheet and the whole stack.

Step 4Pass the S-hooks through the holes and string

the calender to a wall

Note: We have suggested S-hooks but you can come up with your own system of hanging the calender such as nailing it or hanging them using strong clips.

Step 5Gather around the calender and admire your

handiwork! Your first step to using your gardening calender has been completed.

Finally, do give us your suggestions and tell us how you use this calender. You can email your comments to Aditya at [email protected] or Gosie at [email protected]
