How Research Has Impacted

Our IdeasBy Amy Murray

Genre/ DISTINCT • Settings- Typical horror films are set somewhere isolated and creepy

to make sure the audience is sucked in and feels alone to create atmosphere when watching the film; this helped us come up with setting the location in an isolated location in the country side.

• Technical Codes- Technical codes involve the use of camera work. We are making sure that we use different types of camera work to gain different effects in the shot and trailer combined. Making sure we use close-ups so the audience knows key concepts to look for and short, fast clips to get action through in our trailer helped up come up with better ideas.

• Iconography- Iconography involves the use of colours, lighting, props and costumes. Colours used in the trailer need to attract the audience, so using dark and red (links with blood) will help bring the fear factor and give the trailer the conventional horror films look. Making sure the lighting is low key and motivated will add tension. Props and costume allow the audience to understand the narrative a lot more and helps us make the film flow and increased the realistic factor. It also helps identify the characters and give us brief information about them by they way they dress.

Genre/ DISTINCT • Themes- we concentrated and the ‘Good vs Evil’ theme as that

follows typical conventions with the horror genre. We show this through our narrative and through the characters.

Narrative/ character typesOur horror trailer doesn’t fit within Todorov’s theory of the ‘Classic Hollywood Narrative’ as the film has an unhappy ending. Our proposed idea doesn’t follow the typical narrative structures as it doesn’t start with an equilibrium. This then follows the typical horror narrative convention. Our idea does follow the typical character types proposed by Propp. We have many different character types such as ‘the slut’ ‘the misfit’ ‘the villain’ and ‘the final girl’ although it doesn’t follow typical final girl traits as the final girl isn't pure and virginal.

RepresentationThe villain (doctor) in our narrative makes out to be a reliable and trust worthy but in the end we discover he is out to kill and betray. The final girl is represented as the dumb blonde but actually turns out to fight back against the doctor to survive so this goes against horror norms although this does play in to Clovers final girl theory as the female is the one to be the fighter and survivor . Our misfit in the narrative is the androgynous girl which is all the virginal woman which contradicts the horror norms also. We still apply the sexual slutty girl in the narrative which goes with the norms in horror and follow the typical character but what goes against the norm, is that she's the first one to die.

Audience & InstitutionsWe looked into the horror film ‘The Women in Black’ and looked into how they advertised their film and release date. The women in black turned out to be an anomaly as most horror films don't use a lot of advertising sources when trying to make their film well known and try and get as much people to go and watch the film on the release date. Most horror films release their trailer after the film has been released and doesn't use much advertising tools in gain a better chance of increasing profit. Our findings on our questionnaires found that majority of the participants go to the cinema to watch new released films. Most participants like psychological films and would pay to go and find one on their release date. Everyone of our participants used social networking and found out about new released films via the internet. This then enforces the idea that our target audience suits our film and that the main source of marketing we would use would be social media sources.
