QUESTION TWO
How effective is the combination of your main
product and ancillary texts?
Target Audience
In order to evaluate how effective the combination of my main product and my ancillary tasks were, I first have to establish my target audience in order to know who my products are effective towards. It is extremely difficult to create a product where it satisfies and attracts everyone, so it’s important to have a target audience.
I decided that my target audience would be female teenagers/young adults who are emo and goth. A specific age range would be 16-25 year olds.
Colour schemeEmos and goths are famous for their obsession with black and dark colours, so when planning and producing my music video, digipak, and website, I made sure that I include dark colours as much as I can – and that’s exactly what I did.
You can see in all three pictures which come from each task, they are extremely dark with little light. This is a common feature amongst emo and goth culture, so it would attract my target audience.
MascotIn order for an artist to be able to sell their albums and be successful, it needs to be recognizable and have a unique brand. The way I chose to this was by having a mascot who appears throughout the music video, digipak and website. The mascot I chose was a voodoo doll. I thought having a voodoo doll as a mascot would be the most effective because it represents emotions such as a ‘hate’ and ‘rage’, which is a common emotion portrayed in emo and goth songs. You can see the mascot in all 3 products I created in the pictures below.
Theme
Music videos are the adverts for albums, so in order to attract my target audience to my artist’s album, I had to create an effective music video which would create an interest for them. I did this successfully with the plot of my music video being about a girl who is being taken over by the dark side and having conflicting feelings. It has an angst feel to it, which is common in emos songs in particular. ‘Angst’ is also more popular among the youth than the elderly, which is why it would more attractive to my target audience of 16-25 year olds, and therefore effective.
Theme part 2It’s important to keep the theme of the album continuous throughout all promotions otherwise the audience may sometimes feel as if they’ve been misled. In order to avoid this, I made my album cover similar to what the shots in my music video look like so that it’s recognizable to my audience. Furthermore, since the album cover is the picture of the artist screaming but the album is called ‘So much to live for’, it once again brings up the idea of conflicting feelings and angst.
