Bringing peace and security to Yemen will bring peace and

security to Saudi Arabia, the GCC and the region, the spokesperson of the Arab coalition forces in Yemen, Col. Turki Al Malki has said.

“The Iranians are taking Yemen as an experimental field for ballistic missiles and drones. National heritage festival bighit, footfall crosses 35,000

“Muharraq Memory” in focus Held near Arad Fort, Muharraq Manama

The curtain has come down on the hugely successful

26th edition of the National Heritage Festival yesterday.

The ten-day festival held in the vicinity of the iconic Arad Fort in the city of Muharraq attracted more than 35,000 visitors.  The event held under the auspices of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa was organised by The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA).

This year’s edition with the nostalgic slogan “Muharraq Memory” celebrated Bahrain’s long-standing heritage and Muharraq legacy in the fields of culture, literature, arts and sports.

The festival also coincided with the 2018 Muharraq Capital of Islamic Culture. It focused

on Bahrain’s deep-rooted heritage which includes palm-linked handicrafts, the Kurar, the naqda, traditional fashion, pottering, goldsmithing among other crafts.

A highlight of the event was an exhibition showcasing 100 works by Bahraini artist Ibrahim Khalifa. Artist Shaikha

Hanan bint Hassan Al-Khalifa also exhibited her collection of photos taken during the period between 1992 and 2002.

The festival featured documentary films, the heritage village, traditional dishes, folklore music, workshops for calligraphy, pottery and other crafts.

1,100 hurt in Gaza protestGaza Border

Israeli troops fired live rounds and tear gas at Palestinians who

thronged the Gaza-Israel frontier and rampaged at a border terminal on Friday as part of a long-running protest, injuring about 1,100 people.

Medics said around 82 people were shot and wounded with live fire, another 800 treated for gas inhalation and the rest for other injuries along the Gaza side of the 25-mile (40-km) border fence, where Palestinians set up tent

encampments on March 30 for what they call “The Great March of Return”.

Youths rolled burning tyres to within 300 metres (yards) of the fence, trying to use the smoke as cover for throwing stones across it while eluding Israeli snipers. Army gunfire has killed at least 43 Palestinians on the frontier over the last month.

Protesters said they used slingshots to down two small Israeli observation drones. The army confirmed the drone losses.

With an eye on Russia, US Navy re-establishing its second fleetWashington

The United States Navy is re-establishing its Second Fleet,

responsible for the northern Atlantic Ocean, nearly seven years after it was disbanded as the Pentagon puts countering Russia at the heart of its military strategy.

“Our National Defence Strategy makes clear that we’re back in an era of great power competition as the security environment continues to grow more challenging and complex,” Chief of U.S. Naval Operations Admiral John Richardson said on Friday.

“Second Fleet will exercise operational and administrative authorities over assigned ships, aircraft and landing forces on the East Coast and northern Atlantic Ocean,” Richardson said.

The command, which will be based in Norfolk, Virginia, will initially have 15 personnel and will eventually grow to over 200 people, officials said. A number of decisions, like who would command Second Fleet and what assets it would include, have not yet been made.

In 2011, the fleet was disbanded for cost-saving and organizational structure reasons.

Since then, however, Russia has become more assertive, flexing its military muscles in conflicts like those in Ukraine and Syria, and tensions between Moscow and Washington have increased.

Earlier this year, the U.S. military said in a new national defence

strategy that countering Russia, along with China, would be a priority, the latest sign of shifting priorities after more than a decade and a half of focussing on the fight against Islamist militants.

In presenting the new strategy, which will set priorities for the Pentagon for years to come, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis called China and Russia “revisionist powers” that “seek to create a world consistent with their authoritarian models.”

Russia has increased its naval patrols in the Baltic Sea, the North Atlantic and the Arctic, NATO officials say, although the size of its navy is smaller now than during the Cold War era.

Since taking office last year,

President Donald Trump has tried to build stronger ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

But relations have instead soured over allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Russia’s alleged poisoning of a former double agent in Britain and Putin’s support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government in Syria.

The Pentagon also announced on Friday that it was offering to host a proposed NATO Joint Force Command at its naval facilities in Norfolk.

It was one of two proposed new NATO commands aimed at deterring Russia that the United States and Germany had offered to host.

The revamp works ordered by His Royal Highness

Prime Minister Prince Khalifa in Duraz have been completed, Minister of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, Issam bin Abdulla Khalaf, announced.

Based on HRH Premier’s directives, issued in July 2017, to meet the citizens’ needs, the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning formed a work team to inspect and identify the needs of Duraz village regarding road networks, streets and other services, the

minister said, adding that the team met the local villagers and was informed about their remarks.

While paying a field visit to Duraz last week, Khalaf said that the first phase of the Duraz Port had been completed, and that the second phase had commenced.

Works included the revamp and expansion of the Fishermen’s Harbour there to facilitate the movement of fishermen, he added.

A big car park to serve the users of the Fishermen’s Harbour and accommodate several other cars was also built, he said, adding that

lighting lamps were replaced, a pedestrian crossing was provided and the current covered area was renovated.

Regarding the second phase of the Duraz Port’s revamp project, the minister asserted that a fish market, a fishermen’s building and a gate for the port will be constructed.

Khalaf requested the relevant authorities to expedite the implementation of the second phase of the project, as well as to develop the area overlooking the Northern City, increase green spaces, bring new games and beautify the region.

Regarding roads, the minister said that 90 per cent

of the detailed designs of the Avenue 36 in Duraz had been completed, and that the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning is currently coordinating with the Electricity and Water

Authority (EWA) to finalise the designs.

Member of the Northern Municipal Council, Fatima Al-Qatari praised the speedy implementation of HRH the Prime Minister’s directives.

She extended sincere thanks to HRH Premier for his directives to develop the village, and his orders to service ministries and officials to visit the region to meet its citizens’ needs.

A top Bahraini diplomat yesterday expressed

Kingdom’s desire to further strengthen its strategic partnership with the US to enhance regional and international stability and security.

This came during a speech of the Ambassador of Bahrain to the United States of America, Shaikh Abdullah bin Rashid Al Khalifa, during a seminar organised at his residence on the growing defence and security relations between the two friendly countries.

The event, held in cooperation with the regional

office of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS-Americas), based in Washington, DC, was attended by many experts and enthusiasts from the US government, the US Department of Defence, think tanks, universities and companies.

The Kingdom of Bahrain, in cooperation with the International Institute for Strategic Studies, host the Manama Dialogue on an annual basis.

Addressing the participants, the Ambassador told them that the strategic partnership between the Kingdom and the USA, which started by signing the defence cooperation

agreement in 1991 and the Bahrain-US Free Trade Agreement in 2006, have resulted in the development of defence and security capabilities of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Shaikh Abdullah stressed the importance of developing trade exchange between the two countries, noting the direct link between the economic and defence relations.

He also highlighted the development of the strategic partnership between the Kingdom and the USA, referring to the successful visit by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, Deputy

Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister, Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, to Washington last

November. The visit resulted in the signing of trade deals worth more than ten billion US dollars, which is considered

the largest in the history of the Kingdom, and the extension of the defence cooperation agreement for 15 years.

(The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the policy or position of this newspaper.)

Out of 5,193 public statues throughout the United States, only 394 represent women. In Britain, just 2.7 percent of all statues represent women who are not religious or mythical

figures. Worldwide, governments erect monuments of famous historical and mythical heroes in celebration and memorial, and the result has been overwhelmingly male. Yet far from being a trivial issue, the lack of female monuments is yet another example of female underrepresentation and the undervaluation of women’s contribution to society. This contradicts the fact that women have long been used to represent important social ideas and powerful objects.

The art world has never shied away from sculpting women and in fact, celebrates the female form (think the Venus de Milo and Edward Degas’ ballerina statues). Various world religions have long paid tribute to female saints and deities with statues and temples: there are countless statues of Joan of Arc dotting France, and statues of the Virgin Mary can be found practically everywhere. Yet when it comes to the creation of public monuments, governments have chosen to focus on men even as women make greater strides in the public sphere.

Indeed, many monuments are dedicated to either heads of state, politicians or war heroes—positions historically denied to women. Admittedly, this has played a critical part as to why women are so underrepresented in public monuments. With women playing a greater role in society and changing social norms, there is, however, no excuse for female figures to be shunted in favour of famous men. There is also no excuse for the amount of public outcry or disdain for female statues, as was the case with the Fearless Girl Statue on Wall Street (which was seen as an insult to capitalism) or Copenhagen’s The Little Mermaid, which has consistently been vandalized.

Interestingly, despite their exclusion from society, women have long been used to represent cherished ideas and notions. In Europe and the United States, the concepts of liberty and justice have long been represented by images of powerful-looking women. Take the iconic Statue of Liberty, one of the world’s most famous statues, which was erected to grace New York City’s harbour and greet immigrants to the new country. And let’s not forget that powerful objects including ships, cars, machines and even nuclear bombs are called “she” and named after women.

If women are good enough to represent powerful ideas and objects, then real-life heroes are more than good enough to be celebrated with their own monuments. As the popular Tumblr meme says: “Don’t try to down-play my power.”

Kuwait blocks UN statement criticizing Palestinian leader

United Nations

Kuwait blocked the U.N. Security Council

on Friday from issuing a U.S.-sponsored statement sharply criticising Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for what Washington called “vile anti-Semitic slurs and baseless conspiracy theories.”

Kuwait is the Arab representative on the 15-member council and two diplomats said it opposed the press statement on grounds that it was not comprehensive. The diplomats spoke on condition of anonymity because consultations were private.

Abbas issued an apology earlier Friday over remarks

in his speech Monday to the Palestine Liberation Organization parliament, which was sharply condemned as anti-Semitic by Israel, the U.S., U.N., European Union and others.

In the lengthy speech, he said it was the Jews’ “social function,” including money lending, which caused animosity toward them in Europe. He also described the creation of Israel as a European colonial project, saying “history tells us there is no basis for the Jewish homeland.”

U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley was sharply critical of the Security Council’s failure to respond.

The proposed statement, obtained by The Associated Press, would have expressed the Security Council’s “firm and unequivocal rejection of anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial” and called on Abbas “to refrain from anti-Semitic comments.”

The draft would also have recalled “that anti-Semitism has historically contributed to threats to international peace and security, mass atrocities, and widespread violations of human rights.”

The U.S. circulated the statement Friday as several thousand Palestinians staged a sixth weekly protest on the Gaza-Israel border. (Reuters)

Cairo

Egypt moved the sixth and last chariot of famed

pharaoh Tutankhamun yesterday to the boy king’s vast collection of items in an under-construction museum near the pyramids in Giza.

The unique artifact, a major feature of the military museum for over 30 years, paraded through Cairo with a military police escort to its final resting place at the Grand Egyptian Museum, home to thousands of artifacts spanning different dynasties of ancient Egypt. King Tut’s items, including the six chariots, are to be put on display in halls covering 7,000 square meters of the museum.

The Antiquities Ministry has been gradually moving King Tut’s belongings to the new museum to undergo restoration before they are put on display. The transfer of King Tut’s belongings

has become a particularly sensitive issue; In 2014 the beard attached to the ancient Egyptian monarch’s priceless golden mask was accidentally knocked off and hastily reattached with an epoxy glue

compound, sparking uproar among archaeologists.

Saturday’s relocation of King Tut’s sixth chariot was preceded by the fourth International Tutankhamun Conference which was attended by a wide

range of Egyptologists and archaeologists from the world over. During the conference, Antiquities Minister Khaled al-Anani said that the first phase of the museum, including King Tut’s halls, will

be completed by the end of this year but the date for the museum’s soft opening has yet to be decided. The museum currently hosts more than 43,200 artifacts of which over 4,500 belong to King Tut alone.

The museum’s grand opening is planned for 2022.

Archaeologist Zahi Hawass told reporters that excavation work on the tomb of King Tut’s wife, Ankhesenamun, is currently underway and he expects it to bear fruit soon.

“Maybe soon a tomb will be revealed in the Valley of the Monkeys or the western Valley of the Kings,” he said.

The nearly intact tomb of King Tut, who ruled Egypt more than 3,000 years ago, was discovered in 1922 by Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings, located on the west bank of the Nile river in Luxor. For many, King Tut embodies ancient Egypt’s glory, because his tomb was packed with the glittering wealth of the rich 18th Dynasty, from 1569 to 1315 B.C. He became pharaoh at the age of 10 in 1333 B.C., but ruled for just nine years at a pivotal time in ancient Egypt’s history.

Split verdict in Iranian tanker, Chinese freighter crash probeDubai

A committee investigating a collision between an Iranian tanker and a

Chinese freighter has come to diverging conclusions over the causes of the worst oil ship disaster in decades, Iran’s state television reported on Saturday.

The Panama-registered Sanchi, run by Iran’s top oil shipping operator NITC, collided with the CF Crystal, registered in Hong Kong, off the coast of China near Shanghai and the mouth of the Yangtze River Delta on Jan. 6. The Sanchi sank on Jan. 14 after burning for several days. The entire crew of 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshis, are presumed dead.

“(Representatives of) China and Hong Kong believe that both vessels were to blame, but Iran, Panama and Bangladesh see the veering to the right by the Crystal as the cause of the disaster,” Iran’s state TV quoted Nader Pasandeh, the country’s representative on the investigating committee, as saying.

Afghan forces, Taliban wage fierce battle in central GhazniKabul

At least 31 Taliban militants were killed by Afghan

security forces backed by U.S. air strikes in Afghanistan’s central Ghazni province, as the Afghan army battled to protect a key highway, officials said on Saturday.

Mohammad Arif Noori, the spokesman for the provincial governor, said the militants were planning to wrest control of an arterial road and had attacked many security check posts.

“With the help of U.S. air forces, the Taliban militants have been pushed back from the areas near Ghazni-Paktika highway, but the road is still closed due to serious damages caused by the Taliban,” said Noori.

During clashes on Friday, two civilians were killed and four were injured when a

mortar shell hit a home in the Andar district. Andar is one of the unstable districts of Ghazni

province, 95 miles (153 km) southwest of the capital, Kabul.

In a separate incident, two

militants were killed when explosives went off on a highway in Ghazni.

The Taliban confirmed the clashes. The group’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, however, gave a conflicting casualty figure.

According to Mujahid, nine Afghan soldiers and one Taliban fighter were killed. He said 10 Afghan soldiers and three Taliban fighters were wounded in the battle to

control Andar district. In April, the militants

killed a district governor in Ghazni, his bodyguards and five intelligence agents.

The Taliban have stepped up attacks across the country, after they announced their annual spring offensive, a start of the fighting season as the weather allows easier maneuverability through Afghanistan’s mountains.

This week suicide bombers in the capital Kabul killed at least 26 people, including nine journalists.

According to the top U.S. watchdog on Afghanistan, the number of Afghan security forces fell by nearly 11 percent in the past year, and the  vast majority of Afghan forces are incapable of preventing the Taliban from capturing territory. (Reuters)

Syria’s White Helmets rescue force are facing a “freeze”

on funding from the US, its chief said yesterday, saying he was worried President Donald Trump would suddenly cut support.

Raed Saleh said that Syria Civil Defence, also known as the White Helmets, would continue its programming but that financial support coming from the US was under review.

“We were not formally told of any halt to funding, but what we were informed of was a freeze to some of the Middle Eastern projects by American organisations, in order to review their feasibility,” he said.

“Among them are projects linked to stabilisation in Syria,

which includes part of the White Helmets’ work,” Saleh added.

Speaking from Turkey, he said the group’s plans were being “completely reviewed.”

“This happens every year but this year, no one can predict President Trump’s decisions,” Saleh said.

The US State Department said in April that funds earmarked for Syria’s “stabilisation” were being re-assessed, but did not say whether funding for the White Helmets would stop.

Media reports said the White House had instructed the State Department to freeze over $200 million funds for “recovery efforts” in Syria.

The White Helmets’ 3,700

members work in opposition-controlled swathes of Syria, which has been caught up in conflict since 2011.

The first responders rescue civilians trapped under rubble or caught up in fighting. Since they began work in 2013, more than 200 rescuers have died and hundreds more have been injured.

Last year, a Netflix documentary called “The White Helmets” won an Academy Award for best short documentary, while a second film focused on the group, “Last Men in Aleppo,” was a 2018 Oscars nominee.

But they have also been the subject of smear campaigns by supporters of Syria’s government and its ally Russia,

who accuse the White Helmets of being a front group for Al-Qaeda or acting in Western interests.

The White Helmets fund their work through government programmes in the US and Britain, as well as from individual donations.

Saleh said the White Helmets also recently signed contracts with Turkish and Qatari organisations.

In February, the group’s vice-president Abdulrahman Almawwas warned it faced a $6 million (five million euros) budget shortfall compared with 2017.

The fall from $18 million to $12 million led the group to delay taking on new workers, Almawwas told journalists.

NASA yesterday blasted off its latest Mars

lander, InSight, designed to perch on the surface and listen for “Marsquakes” ahead of eventual human missions to explore the Red Planet.

“Three, two, one, liftoff!” said a NASA commentator as the spacecraft launched on a dark, foggy morning atop an Atlas V rocket at 4:05 am Pacific time (1105 GMT) from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, marking NASA’s first interplanetary launch from the US west coast.

$993 million projectThe $993 million project aims to expand human knowledge of interior conditions on Mars, inform efforts to send human explorers there, and reveal how rocky planets like the Earth formed billions of years ago. If all goes as planned, the lander should settle on the Red Planet on November 26.Its name, InSight, is short for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport.

French-made seismometer The key instrument on board is a seismom-eter, called the Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure, made by the French Space Agency. After the lander settles on the Martian sur-face, a robotic arm is supposed to emerge and place the seismometer directly on the ground.

Self-hammering probeThe second main instru-ment is a self-hammer-ing probe that will moni-tor the flow of heat in the planet’s subsurface.Called the Heat Flow and Physical Properties Package, it was made by the German Space Agency with the par-ticipation of the Polish Space Agency. The probe will bore down 10 to 16 feet (three to five meters) below the surface, NASA said, 15 times deeper than any previous Mars mission.

Man mission soon Understanding the tempera-ture on Mars is crucial to NASA’s efforts to send peo-ple there by the 2030’s, and how much a human habitat might need to be heated under frigid conditions, said Green.

Two year missionThe solar and battery-pow-ered lander is designed to operate for 26 Earth months, or one year on Mars, a peri-od in which it is expected to pick up as many as 100 quakes.

Termed as a brilliant venture for the multi-cultural

community here, the Indian School Bahrain (ISB) has taken steps to introduce more Third Languages in their curriculum.

ISB Riffa campus has introduced learning of 8 third languages to the students of Class 1 from the new academic year which started in April 2018. The languages offered to students at the introductory phase include Sanskrit, Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Punjabi, Gujarati, Urdu and Functional French.

‘’Creative strategies are being employed to embed the four skills of language acquisition - Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. This is a brilliant venture in the history of the School, as little children will

not only get an opportunity to be close to their roots and learn their mother tongue in this foreign island but will also respect the rich diverse culture of other languages,” said ISB Riffa Campus Principal Pam e la Xavier.

For Arabic speaking students, the school is offering Functional French as an option, since Arabic is already being taught for them. It is compulsory for Bahraini  students to learn Arabic in all the classes including XI and XII.

The Indian School Isa Town campus has introduced Tamil and Urdu for class IX Second Language in addition to the existing  Malayalam, French, Hindi, Arabic and Sanskrit. For Classes VI to VIII the school is offering Arabic,

Sanskrit, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, French and Urdu, if sufficient students opt for these languages.

‘’When children develop their mother tongue, they are simultaneously fostering a whole host of other essential skills such as communicating, expressing and understanding feelings, critical thinking and problem-solving. It is these skills and concepts gained in the learner’s home language that necessarily get transferred in the easy acquisition of any other language in formal education,’’ said ISB Principal VR Palaniswamy.

‘’At ISB, a  conscious effort is made to correlate the third language curriculum with other subjects, making learning more holistic for the young learners,

said ISB Chairman Prince S Natarajan.  This is a small beginning towards creating better learning outcomes and in fact, the EC had promised to introduce more third languages

during the election. With each passing year, the School plans to extend the learning of the mother tongue to successive grades, Natarajan said.

The introduction of the

languages is in keeping with the view that at the very heart that language development is a critical part of a child’s overall development, said ISB Secretary Saji Antony.

Pivotal career matters may need to be thought through today. A lot could be at stake at work in the very near future. Whatever tasks you need to tend to could require a lot of effort and concentration. There’s a danger of sinking into a gloomy mood over it, but try to avoid this trap. You’ll probably accomplish whatever it is you’re hoping to do.

Invitations to attend social events, perhaps business related, could bring surprising results. You might meet more than one person who shares some of your interests, and these people could become friends. Expect some interesting practical and philosophical discussions. An opportunity to travel abroad or to a distant state might open up for you.

While you may not have been feeling quite your usual self over the past day or two, today you’re likely to be feeling mentally and physically stronger and more focused. You could discuss new ideas for future projects, either personal or business, and formulate plans of action. Your financial future could be on your mind.

A date with a significant other could bring up discussions about plans for the future. Talk could run the gamut of all your concerns, from the practical to the artistic to business to philosophical matters. The overall impact of this might be that it brings the two of you closer together. You might decide to partner on some kind of creative project.

A number of visitors could come to your home today, and a number of fascinating subjects could come up in the course of your conversation. Some interesting ideas might come directly or indirectly from these discussions. You might want to put them to use formulating plans of action to make your future more fulfilling.

Some short trips in your neighbourhood and contact with neighbours or visitors to your community could bring some interesting information your way. It gets you thinking about ways to improve your socioeconomic status and probably your professional standing. Spiritual and philosophical discussions could also take place.

A talent for interior decoration that you may or may not have been aware of could inspire you to do some work on your home. You’ll probably consider a lot of different options and make long lists of possibilities. Discussions with friends and family members can bring new ideas to mind. You might want to take a chance and try something a little different.

Spiritual and intellectual matters may be very much on your mind. A lot of ideas could have come your way, although until now they may not have been very focused. Today, however, your mind should be clear enough to write down your thoughts and read the works of others in order to gain more insight. The possibility of a short trip out of town could also arise. Enjoy your day.

The opportunity to travel, perhaps with friends or a group you belong to, could come your way today. Discussions with others could lead to the confirmation of practical arrangements. You might also seek to advance your education, as your intellect is especially active now. Whatever new experiences come your way could lead to new paths, interests, and opportunities.

Although your mind may have been a bit clouded over the past few days, today the fog should clear and you’ll feel more focused. Money matters might need some attention, and you’re in just the right space to dig in and take care of them. Once practical matters are settled, however, this is a great day for spiritual studies or meditation.

Stimulation that you could receive today from group activities might open doors to a wealth of rich experiences. Your innate organizing talents may be called upon. Discussions with others lead to a new understanding of social, spiritual, or political philosophies and expand your intellectual horizons. An increased ability to concentrate can lead to success with whatever you try to accomplish. A man in the US state of Kansas who shot

dead an Indian immigrant while shouting “get out of my country,” was sentenced Friday to life in prison.

Adam Purinton had previously pleaded guilty to the racial slur-filled, drunken attack in February last year at a suburban bar and restaurant in the Midwestern state.

Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32, was killed in the assault in the Kansas City suburb of Olathe. His friend Alok Madasani, also Indian, was injured along with a bystander, Ian Grillot, who tried to intervene.

The 52-year-old Purinton received the maximum punishment for the murder, and two sentences of 165 months each for the attempted murders, the

prosecutor’s office said. While Purinton would be

eligible for parole in 50 years, he was likely to spend the rest of his life in prison. He is also facing federal hate crime and firearms charges, which could result in the death penalty.

Kuchibhotla and Madasani were aviation systems engineers for GPS manufacturer Garmin. Madasani later said the two close friends met regularly at the bar. Purinton was captured later in the day at a restaurant, where he had allegedly boasted of killing Middle Easterners. He was charged with three counts -- one charge of premeditated first-degree murder and two charges of attempted premeditated fist-degree murder -- and pleaded guilty in March after reaching a deal with prosecutors. Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and

hundreds of anti-Kremlin activists were detained by police on Saturday during street protests against Vladimir Putin ahead of his inauguration for a fourth presidential term.

Navalny had called for people to take to the streets in more than 90 towns and

cities across the world’s largest country to register their opposition to what Navalny says is Putin’s autocratic Tsar-like rule.

Putin won a landslide re-election victory in March, extending his grip over Russia for six more years until 2024, making him the longest-lasting leader since Soviet dictator Josef Stalin who ruled for nearly 30 years.

Brig Gen. Cirilito Sobejana said that if the reported

killing of Yassir Igasan in southern Sulu province turns out to be true, it would add to a leadership crisis within the Abu Sayyaf. Sobejana said the military received intelligence that Igasan was seriously wounded by artillery fire in the hinterlands of Sulu’s Patikul town in October and then died later.

Indian police arrest 14 in rape, killing of girl

Indian police on Saturday arrested 14 people suspected of kidnapping, raping and burning to death a teenage girl, the latest in rising crimes against women in India despite toughening of laws.

Pro-democracy activists pro-testing in the Thai capital on Saturday said that they will march on the country’s seat of power later this month.

Germany has said it will stand up for Israel’s interests and security if it wins a non-permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council.

One of Britain’s most wanted fugitives, accused of drug offenses, was captured in Spain, authorities said.

Qatar is taking a nearly 19 per cent stake in Rosneft,

rescuing the Russian oil major from its stalled deal to sell a major stake to China’s CEFC.

Qatar’s sovereign investment fund QIA initially bought 19.5 per cent in Rosneft together with Swiss trading giant Glencore for 10.2 billion euros ($A16.2 billion) during the Russian firm’s partial

privatisation in 2016.But last year the consortium

agreed to sell a 14.16 stake in Rosneft to CEFC China Energy in a $US9.1 billion deal that was seen as key to helping expand relations between Russia and China, the world’s top energy exporter and top energy consumer.

That deal ran into trouble after CEFC Founder and Chairman Ye Jianming was put

under investigation by Chinese authorities over suspected economic crimes.

Glencore on Friday said that the consortium that had been selling the Rosneft stake had been dissolved, and said Qatar and Glencore would now own stakes directly.

QIA would control an equity stake of 18.93 per cent and Glencore would hold some 0.57 per cent. (news.com)

Pahao, Hawaii

Hawaii’s Big Island remains on high alert yesterday

after the Kilauea volcano spewed lava into residential areas, forcing hundreds to evacuate, and a series of earthquakes, including a powerful tremor, shook the island.

Scientists and local officials warned residents that seismic and volcanic activity may continue after a 6.9 tremor shook buildings on the island’s southeast corner a little after noon (2200 GMT) on Friday and more lava fissures were reported in a residential subdivision, where residents have been ordered to leave.

“Until we see earthquake activity dying down and the ground stops moving, it’s likely

that this activity is going to continue,” said Tina Neal, a scientist in charge at the USGS Hawaii Volcano Observatory after a community meeting attended by about 300 people on Friday.

Some attendees shed tears as they asked officials about looting, travel restrictions and safety precautions at the Puna Geothermal Venture, a power plant in the eruption area.

“Today’s been a challenging day for everyone,” Neal said.

The meeting came hours after the 6.9 tremor caused buildings to shake at the Community Center in Pahoa town, one of two evacuation centers in the area hastily set up after lava started burbling up through fissures in the ground in neighborhoods nearby.

Friday also saw several more eruptive lava fissures, each several hundred yards long, in the Leilani Estates subdivision in the Puna District about a dozen miles (19 km) from the volcano.

The Hawaii County Civil Defence Agency said in an alert that a total of six fissures had occurred. Although no significant lava flows have yet formed, additional outbreaks of lava, which can reach temperatures of about 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit (1,150 Celsius), were expected, the agency said. No injuries or deaths were reported, but Hawaii Governor David Ige activated the Hawaii National Guard to provide emergency help. Two houses have been destroyed, officials said.

California

A perfect wave, again and again, made to order? It’s

the sort of thing that surfers all over the world might dream of as they bob about in the ocean, waiting in vain for the next foaming ticket to ride.

But while Mother Nature may be unreliable, a machine on display in this sun-baked corner of rural California this weekend, more than 100 miles (160 kilometers) from the Pacific Ocean, will serve up wave after wave for an elite-level surfing competition.

The Surf Ranch is the brainchild of legendary 11-time world champion Kelly Slater, a prototype of the giant wave pool that might one day be used to stage surfing competitions at the Olympics.

With surfing set to make its bow at the 2020 Tokyo games, the venue for the competition -- natural waves or man-made -- is still to be formally confirmed.

The Slater-inspired facility on show in this sleepy California town aims to present itself as a viable option for competition. The centrepiece of the Surf Ranch is a giant 640-meter long pool, where a huge metal hydrofoil is pulled along a track at one edge of the water, churning out consistent barrels and tubes.

“I always thought that if surfing is to grow it would have to be in a controlled environment,” Slater said.

“I like to think that this could be part of the future. I don’t know if it THE future,” the 46-year-old added.

“I think the ocean can’t be replaced. I think big waves can’t be replaced. I think the randomness of what happens in the ocean and in mother nature is a big part of why we love surfing.”

Unlike conventional surfing competitions, where the timetable is often at the mercy of the elements, at the Surf Ranch, waves are delivered more or less to order. For a competition like the Olympic Games, ever mindful of television audiences, that makes it an attractive proposition.

Olympic future? The World Surf League

(WSL) has bought the California facility and the concept from Slater. Construction on a similar site in Japan is set to begin later this year, and will be available to Tokyo 2020 if required, according to WSL chief executive Sophie Goldschmidt.

“So we are going to be building one in Tokyo and we hope that if it’s built and tested in time then the Olympics will consider using it because the waves at that time of year are not the best,” Goldschmidt said. “Ultimately it is not our choice.”

This weekend, Slater will captain a United States team in a WSL exhibition tournament which also includes Brazil, Australia, Europe and a team from the rest of the world.

Brazil’s Gabriel Medina and Australian veteran Mick Fanning and women’s stars

Stephanie Gilmore (Australia) and Lakey Peterson (USA) are just some of the surfers who will be taking to the water.

So far, the surfers have been impressed by the man-made lake which delivers waves averaging around six feet high and traversing roughly 700 yards, offering barrel and manoeuvre sections.

“It’s easier,” admitted Brazil’s Filipe Toledo. “In the ocean it is more challenging because you’re relying on nature, waiting. Here you get a perfect wave every three minutes. “Everyone gets the same conditions, the same

opportunities, so the best surfer will win, and not necessarily one who makes a mistake or does not take enough risks.”

Gilmore, too, believes the venue makes for a true test of talent. Competitors would no longer be able to “blame it on the ocean” if they failed to deliver, she said.

The WSL are adamant, however, that artificial waves or “stadium surfing” will never replace traditional beach competitions.

Slater meanwhile is dreaming of crowning his career with an appearance at the Olympics. (AFP)

A pair of second-half goals doomed Stoke City to the second tier for the first time in more than a decade with a 2-1 home loss to Crystal Palace

Stoke City crash out Stoke-on-Trent

Stoke City were relegated from the Premier League as they crashed to a 2-1 loss to

Crystal Palace at the bet365 Stadium.Stoke entered into the contest, their

penultimate game of the season, desperate to boost their survival hopes with what would have been a first victory in 13 matches.

But after they took the lead through Xherdan Shaqiri’s 43rd-minute free kick, things turned around in the second half, with James McArthur equalising in the 68th minute and Patrick van Aanholt netting the winner in the 86th.

Stoke fans had their head in their hands at the final whistle as it was confirmed the club’s 10-year stay in the division was coming to an end, Paul Lambert having failed to rescue them after replacing the sacked Mark Hughes as manager in January. They are three points behind 17th-place Swansea City with one game remaining, but game between Swansea and Southampton on Tuesday means Stoke cannot escape the drop zone.

Palace, meanwhile, are now safe to complete the considerable upturn in their fortunes after Roy Hodgson succeeded Frank De Boer early in the campaign.

After the game got under way with Stoke being roared on by a thunderous rendition of “Delilah” from their supporters, they looked nervy in the early stages.

Palace made a couple of attempts on goal, with shots from Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Wilfried Zaha going wide, and Stoke did not have their first real chance until the 22nd minute, when Mame Diouf headed off-target from Shaqiri’s cross. The visitors applied more pressure before being forced into a change with five minutes left in the half, Joel Ward having to be replaced by Martin Kelly.

Three minutes later, Stoke’s fans were sent into delirium as Shaqiri’s free kick, via a touch off Loftus-Cheek, sailed past Wayne Hennessey to go in front. (PA Sport)

Bayern see off CologneMunich

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich bounced

back from their Champions League disappointment with a 3-1 win at relegated Cologne.

Having missed out on a place in the Champions League final after drawing 2-2 with Real Madrid in midweek, Bayern looked like suffering further disappointment when Niklas Sule put through his own net after 36 minutes to give the hosts a surprise half-time lead.

However, the visitors fought back at the RheinEnergieStadion with two

goals in as many minutes in the second half to make it six league wins on the spin.

Thomas Muller assisted both strikes, teeing up James Rodriguez after 59 minutes and then squaring for Robert Lewandowski in the 61st minute, with Corentin Tolisso adding a late third.

Simon Terodde tried his luck early on for Cologne, but his powerful effort from distance was comfortably saved by Sven Ulreich. At the other end Javi Martinez headed a Rodriguez corner over the bar, but Cologne, whose fate was

sealed when they conceded a last-minute winner against Freiburg last week, continued to pose a threat.

Terodde headed over when unmarked and Simon Zoller fired wide after 11 minutes.

Marcel Risse blazed over after some lapse Bayern defending, but Cologne went ahead when Sule turned a cross from the right into his own net.

Muller shot straight at Timo Horn and the Cologne keeper had to be alert to pull off a fine save to deny Lewandowski as Bayern sought an equaliser before the break.

The visitors finally levelled just before the hour mark, Muller heading the ball back across goal for Rodriguez to convert at the back post.

Muller was again the architect as he set up Lewandowski and the Poland striker rifled a low shot past horn two minutes later.

Tolisso completed the scoring when he headed home Colombia forward Rodriguez’s cross with 12 minutes remaining. The 39-year-old Cologne substitute Claudio Pizarro twice went close to scoring a consolation against his former club in stoppage time, but was off target after a mazy run and then denied by Ulreich. Real won’t give Barca guard of honour

Reds are ready for anything: Klopp

London

Real Madrid will not give La Liga champions Barcelona

a guard of honour when the sides meet in El Clasico, coach Zinedine Zidane said yesterday.

Barcelona wrapped up the title last weekend and face European champions Real on Sunday.

“After the Club World Cup they didn’t want to do it for us,” Zidane told a news conference.

“They might have said they didn’t do it because they weren’t in the competition, but that’s not true. You’ve got to win the Champions League to play in it and we’re both in the

Champions League.“It’s not up to me to decide

about the guard of honour but they didn’t do it. We, with respect, won’t do it for them because they didn’t.

“We respect what Barca have done in winning the league, which for me is the most difficult and nicest thing you can do. But these things happen; if they’d have given us one, we weren’t going to break the tradition of doing so.”

The incident Zidane was referring to happened before the Clasico on Dec. 23 when, having returned from the United Arab Emirates. (Reuters)

London

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is confident his

players can cope with the emotional effects of qualifying for the Champions League final.

The 7-6 aggregate win over Roma in midweek, after a chaotic 4-2 defeat in the Stadio Olimpico, booked their place in Kiev to face Real Madrid on May 26.

Now Klopp’s players, who

went back out to celebrate with fans being held back long after the semi-final second leg, have to raise themselves again for a crucial trip to face Chelsea in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge.

“I have not a little bit of doubt about the mindset of my boys,” he said.

“It was a really nice thing to go to the final. The crowd were still in the stadium and the boys went there.

“That gave them a real boost. Before that they were exhausted. Done. Happy, yes, but Chelsea on Sunday.” (PA Sport)

Petra Kvitova beats Mihaela Buzarnescu 4-6 6-2 6-3

Prague

Petra Kvitova came from a set down against Mihaela

Buzarnescu to win the Prague Open on home soil - her third WTA title of the year.

The Czech raced into a 3-0 lead but Romania’s Buzarnescu took the opening set after winning five straight games.

But world number 10 Kvitova hit back before taking a hard-fought decider to win 4-6 6-2 6-3.

The two-time Wimbledon champion, who has now won 23 WTA tournaments, denied Buzarnescu her first career title.

Kvitova, 28, has had a strong season on the women’s tour, winning both the Qatar Open and the St Petersburg Open, following six months out after a knife attack at her home in December 2016.

The second seed began

the better in front of a vocal partisan crowd in Prague and had two break points to move 4-0 ahead in the first set.

But the home favourite made 24 unforced errors in the first set and served five double faults as she collapsed to hand world number 37 Buzarnescu the advantage.

Buzarnescu, 30, failed to capitalise in the following set and her frustration at both her own tennis and the crowd showed as Kvitova saved six break points and converted three of her own to force a third set.

The Romanian won just 53 per cent of the points on her first serve in the second set, and Kvitova needed just one break of serve in the decider to complete the turnaround. (BBC)

Haas may alter 2019 plans London

Guenther Steiner says Haas will probably have

to change its R and D strategy to deal with the new-for-2019 front and rear wing Formula 1 rules that were passed last week.

Haas is understood to be one of several teams that voted against the proposal, which is aimed at improving overtaking,

but enough squads supported the FIA/F1 proposal to push it through.

The US team had intended its 2019 car to be an evolution of this year’s model, but team principal Steiner acknowledges that the changes are big enough to require its Italy-based aerodynamic team to possibly take a new direction.

“Now that they’re throwing in this new aero regulation for 2019, we maybe need to change our plan,” he said.

“Those decisions will be made in the next week.

“The original plan was to develop this car better, because it could be an evolution for next year.”

Tsitsipas advances to semis

Estoril

Stefanos Tsitsipas swept the last seven points of the match to defeat Roberto

Carballes Baena 6-7 (2/7), 6-2, 7-6 (7/3) yesterday for a place in the semi-finals of the Estoril Open.

The 19-year-old Greek, a surprise finalist last weekend in Barcelona against Rafael Nadal, will aim for his second straight title match as he takes on Portuguese number one Joao Sousa, who beat British third seed Kyle Edmund 6-3, 1-6, 6-0.

The 44th-ranked Tsitsipas recovered from 0-3 down in the final-set tiebreaker, erasing the deficit and sprinting to a victory that was sealed when his 77th-ranked opponent drove a return long.

The battle between first-time opponents lasted for nearly two and three-quarter hours. “I was really focused after 0-3 in the tiebreaker,” the youngster said. “The two points after that were important for the win.

“I had to keep the score as close as possible. After those two points, I got the upper hand.“I was patient during the rallies. Winning seven points in a row is unbelievable. I had the momentum and I kept it to the end.” Tsitsipas is coming off his best performance on clay and just defeated his second top-10 opponent in as many weeks, adding Estoril top seed Kevin Anderson to his list of victims on Thursday.

Last week, the outsider beat world number seven Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals.

“After last week in Barcelona, I told myself I had to keep my level and concentration,” Tsitsipas said. “That is a difficult challenge.

“At the start of the match I was frustrated, but I got tired of my attitude and stopped complaining and just played.” (AFP)

Marquez fastest in third practice Jerez

Reigning MotoGP champion Marc Marquez

topped third practice ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez, as both Andrea Dovizioso and Maverick Vinales missed out on automatic Q2 spots.

Ducati’s championship leader Dovizioso and Yamaha rider Vinales were outperformed by their factory team-mates in the late-session qualifying simulation runs, respectively finishing four and sixth hundredths off making it into the top 10.

Having crashed late-on during Friday practice, Marquez usurped Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro for the lead in the opening stages of the 45-minute FP3 session.

He then took until the

10-minute mark to pump in the fastest lap of the weekend so far, a 1m38.549s, surpassing LCR rider Cal Crutchlow’s best effort from second practice.

But the Honda privateer’s response, arriving at the midpoint of the session, was emphatic, as he went almost six tenths clear with a 1m37.973s.

With the clock running out, Marquez emerged for his first run with a new soft rear tyre, and reclaimed the top spot with a 1m37.818s, following that up with a 1m37.702s on his next lap.

That time ended up coming under no threat from the soft-tyre runners, with Crutchlow and Suzuki’s Andrea Iannonecompleting the top three, both around three tenths behind Marquez.

Tech3’s Johann Zarco was the top Yamaha runner in fourth, ahead of the lead Ducati of Jorge Lorenzo and Pramac’s Ducati GP17 rider Jack Miller. Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi, Dani Pedrosa, Danilo Petrucci and Alex Rins made up the top 10 in FP3. (Autosport)Stefanos Tsitsipas

Defending champion Alexander Zverev

advanced to the final of the Munich Open after a hard-fought 7-5 6-2 victory over South Korean’s Chung Hyeon yesterday. World number three Zverev will take on compatriot Philipp Kohlschreiber in Sunday’s all-German final.

Next Gen ATP Finals champion Chung was quick

off the blocks in the semi-final clash and took a 3-0 lead but top seed Zverev responded by winning five straight games.

The Korean levelled the scores but Zverev was not affected by the attempted comeback and broke Chung’s serve for a third time en route to clinching the set.

Zverev continued his high-intensity approach in the second set and piled the

pressure on his 21-year-old opponent, breaking Chung’s serve on two more occasions as he progressed to his second ATP final this year.

The German, who won his first title on home soil in Munich in 2017, will face Kohlschreiber in the final after the veteran eased to a 6-2 6-4 win over Maximilian Marterer in the other semi-final. (Reuters)

Sports Economics forum a successDT News NetworkManama

A call to raise more attention towards sport

in an attempt to increase national income came out yesterday as the Scientific Research Forum in Sports Economics come to a close.

Three key sessions were held on the second and last day of the forum to this much- awaited event, organized by the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC).

Yesterday’s first session started with Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors and Deputy Director General, Knowledge and Human Development Authority Dr Ahmed bin Saad Al Sharif of the UAE presenting his key notes on the influence of sport on international economics income.

“Sport has a significant role in the development of any nation, it is a motivator to economic growth and has great impact on tourism, way of life, and public health,” said Al Sharif.

Al Sharif also urged the

private sector to play a crucial part to help the country gain financial boost through sports investments, and referred to Dubai as a successful model.

“Dubai has become one the most growing cities in the world with 2.4 million Emirati Dirhams benefited as a daily income from sports tourism in Dubai,” added Al Sharif.

Late on, Dr Wesam Al Shaikhli, President of the Iraqi Academy of Sciences, spoke about the importance of sports medicine in selection of talents, and referred to the British experiment as an example.

Al Shaikhli also said that there are 130,000 staff in the Academy of Scientific Research and Training who work as coaches, teachers, administrators and medical teams, who all work together to complete the selection process.

The forum concluded with BOC secretary general Abdulrahman Askar presenting certificates to the participants and awards to the speakers.

alia Viviani claims

second stageRohan Dennis moves into overall lead after winning intermediate time bonus

Tel Aviv

Australia’s Rohan Dennis took the race leader’s pink jersey off reigning champion Tom

Dumoulin as Italy’s Elia Viviani won the Giro d’Italia second stage in Tel Aviv yesterday.

Dennis claimed three bonus seconds in an intermediate sprint earlier on the 167-kilometre stage from Haifa to overcome his two-second deficit from Friday’s opening time-trial in Jerusalem.

Race favourite Chris Froome finished safely in the peloton after a bunch sprint in the Mediterranean coastal resort of Tel Aviv.

The 32-year-old Briton was nursing cuts and abrasions to his right-hand side, suffered in a training crash in Jerusalem on Friday.

He had surprisingly lost 37 seconds to Dutchman Dumoulin -- his chief rival for overall victory -- in the race against the clock, later admitting he had been riding in pain.

Yesterday, Olympic omnium champion Viviani, 29, seemed to have left his charge to the line quite late but burst through from well behind to emerge from the back wheel of Irishman Sam Bennett and surge to victory.

“The win, everyone was expecting but doing it is never easy,” Viviani, who won his second stage at the Giro, told Eurosport.

“I was really nervous this morning, I tried to overcome a bit this emotion but it’s not easy.”

Italian Jakub Mareczko was second with Bennet taking third.

Dennis, 27, had edged out Viviani at an intermediate sprint 91km into the stage to claim the three bonus seconds he needed to take the race lead.

“I think Viviani, he sprinted but

he didn’t go full,” admitted Dennis.“It was good to see him get the stage win after

not giving it to me, but he was kind let’s be honest!”Dennis has now worn the leader’s jersey at all

three Grand Tours, following opening stage success at the Tour de France in 2015 and last year’s Vuelta a Espana.

An earlier three-man break was gobbled up as Dennis’s BMC team tried to get their man into a position to contest the intermediate sprint.

Dennis now leads by one second from Dumoulin with Belgian Victor Campenaerts third at 3sec.

Canadian Guillaume Boivin attacked again in the final 60km but had been caught long before the final 10km as the sprinters’ teams left nothing to chance. (AFP)
