Computers forCollege

Students at Te AwamutuCollege will head back to theclassroom in 2009 with morecomputers to use.

The school was given 15PCs by Waikato University inlate 2008 under a policy whichsees retired computerequipment in good conditiondonated to schools or earlychildhood centres. Theuniversity upgrades its 4500PCs about every four years ona rolling basis.

Schools can approach theuniversity with requests forcomputing equipment bysending an email [email protected] andstating how many computersthey need and what they areneeded for.

Soggy finishfor 2008

A wet December saw TeAwamutu’s annual rainfallamong the highest recordedover the past 19 years by TeAwamutu weather watcherPaul Hobbs.

December’s rainfall was 159millimetres, about 50millimetres above average, andcontributed to an annual total of1469, the wettest year since1996’s soggy 1702 millimetres.

Horror crash claims threeA Pirongia mother is at the bedside of her

surviving three-year-old daughter in the chil-dren’s ward of Waikato Hospital after losing herhusband and two other children in a horror roadsmash on Saturday.

Justin Paul Nicholas (34) of Hamilton, wasdriving to Pirongia on Kakaramea Road at about10pm Saturday when his car crossed the centreline and crashed into an oncoming articulatedtruck.

Mr Nicholas, his daughter Jaiden Nicholas(10) and son Kade James Nicholas (7) diedinstantly at the scene.

Rescue workers fought to save the life of theonly survivor, who suffered multiple fractures.She is now reported to be in a stable condition.

The truck driver and passenger were notinjured.

Serious Crash Unit crash analyst ConstableJeremy Newell said the vehicle was extensivelydamaged as it took the full impact of the truck.

Investigators are still analysing whatoccurred as the crash was on a straight road infine conditions.

Driver fatigue or inattention appear likelycauses.

The crash was the last in a black holidayperiod which claimed 23 lives in road crashes,five up on the same period last year.

Five deaths occurred in the Waikato.National road policing manager Superintend-

ent Paula Rose said the deaths were a ‘bad start’to 2009.

‘‘Bad decision-making was the main cause ofmany accidents,’’ she said.

‘‘At the end of the day it’s not the policeofficer, it’s not the traffic engineer, sittingbehind the wheel, it’s the individual driver andthe choices start and finish with them.’’

Celebrations for centenarian

Special celebrations were heldat Camellia Resthome just beforeChristmas for a very special per-son.

Pat Henton (known as ‘Florrie’to many) turned 100 on December19 and was the centre of attentionfor family, friends, residents andstaff.

Granddaughter Alex Fear saysshe has always been a complete joyfor the family.

‘‘As a grandmother and great-grandmother she has always beenkind, loving and such an importantpart of our lives.

‘‘We are very aware how specialit is to still have her around andtaking such an active interest in allwe do. She is quite a blessing.’’

Florence (Pat) BaverstockO’Hara was born December 19, 1908in Auckland.

At the time her father, Joseph,was a wheel-right in Otahuhucarrying out carriage repairs andblacksmithing.

In 1916 her parents purchased afarm at Ardmore (South Auckland)so she completed her primaryschooling there.

She would then travel by trainfrom Papakura to Newmarket toattend Epsom Girl’s GrammarSchool and later AucklandTeacher’s Training College to com-plete her primary training.

She taught in a number ofschools including Te Kowhai andPapakura.

Pat left Te Kowhai in 1936 toteach at Papakura, where she metand married her first husband,Papakura solicitor GordonMcDonald, in 1939.

They went on to live in Aus-tralia on the McDonald family’sVictoria farm where they had three

children, son Alan and daughtersMary and the late Averil.

The family returned to Ardmorein 1948, then shortly afterwardssettled in Hamilton. During thistime Pat raised her family andundertook relief teaching.

While she had been teaching atTe Kowhai she had boarded withthe Henton family and her friend-ship with son Morris was rekindledafter Mr McDonald passed away in1976.

The couple married in Decem-ber 1977, living on the Henton farmat Paterangi until Morris’ death in2006.

Pat has been resident atCamellia Resthome since then. Shewas an active member of the Hamil-ton, then Te Awamutu Bridge Clubfor many years, until her early 90’s.

One of her former pupils, RonWhitford, met Pat again at her 98thbirthday after seventy years. Patwas his school mistress in the1930’s at Papakura.

Since then he has been makingregular trips to Te Awamutu fromhis Kawakawa Bay home to visithis favourite teacher.

‘‘She was a wonderful teacherand as a pupil I absolutely lovedher. Many years later when I ranacross her nephew he gave me acontact address and I just had to seeher again.’’

Mr Whitford was delighted toagain visit for her 100th birthdayand says she was excited to receivespecial messages from the Queen,Governor General and Prime Min-ister.

‘‘She also loved being sur-rounded by her family.’’

These included all five grand-children (Alex, Andrew, Kathryn,Sarah, Felicity) and five great-grandchildren (Harrison, Grace,Georgia, Hamish and Morgan).

Alexandra RacingClub has been goingstrong for 138 years andjudging by the success-ful annual picnic meet-ing on Boxing Day it willrace happily into thefuture for many years tocome.

A crowd estimated bypresident, Keith Ormsbyto be between 7,000 and8,000 enjoyed a beautifulday and entertainmentto keep the whole familyentertained. The crowdwas well up on recentyears thanks to favour-able weather from theoutset.

There was sparklingracing, of the thorough-bred and standardbredvariety, picnic hamperschock full of Christmasday leftovers and drinks,bouncy castles and ridesfor kids, impromptugames of soccer, touchrugby, cricket andfrisbee throwing.

‘‘We aim to make it areal fun family day out,some people don’t evensee a horse race,’’ saysMr Ormsby who heads asmall but hard workingcommittee.

There were a fewyounger ones to help outthe club stalwarts thisyear, which is a goodsign for the future.

Mr Ormsby says thecommittee was gratefulfor the strong Te Awa-mutu Police and MaoriWardens’ presence,which ensured peoplehad a good time without

ruining anyone else’sfun.

The day serves as auseful fundraiser forcommunity groups —with PTA volunteersmanning the gates, MtPirongia Lions doing thecatering, Pirongia Ten-nis Club organising chil-dren’s activities,Pirongia Golf Club mem-bers manning theequalisator tote.

The cleanup is doneby a Hamilton Mormongolf group, who play atwo day tournament onthe course.

Robber invaded homePolice are asking for any information from the

public that will lead to the apprehension of a malewho robbed an 81-year-old man while in hisKakepuku Road home.

The robbery occurred between 9.30pm and 11pmon Tuesday, December 30.

The victim was asleep in his home when a maleentered the property, woke him and demandedpetrol and money.

The offender then bound the victim and left theproperty soon afterwards with cash and otherproperty.

He is described as a male Caucasian of lean build,

over 180cm tall and in his mid to late 20s. He wasdescribed as wearing dark clothing, a beanie and hadhis face covered.

Police would like to hear from anyone who sawany suspicious activity or vehicles in the Pokuruvicinity on the night of the offence.

Nearby residents are also asked to check theirproperties and report any thefts, especially petrolthefts, which Police believe may have been a motivefor the offence.

House damaged in blazeFirefighters arrived to a Rata

Street home on Sunday, December28 to find neighbours helping keepthe fire at bay with a garden hose.

Several calls were made to thebrigade regarding the fire and thehouse was well involved whenthey arrived. Two crews workedfor around thirty minutes inintense heat to get the blaze undercontrol.

The house was empty at thetime as the occupiers were in thegarage when the fire began.

While firefighters preventedthe spread of the fire, it is estim-ated around 80% of the house hassuffered heat damage.

LIFE EDUCATION DONATIONTrevor and Barbara Balks were rapt

Trustee Shirley Wilks says the couple doan amazing amount of work to make such afantastic display and the Trust trulyappreciates their efforts.

Gunshots sparked AOS calloutPolice enquiries are con-

tinuing into an incident atHauturu in the early hours ofFriday morning in which shotswere fired — sparking anArmed Offenders Squad alert.

At about 5.15am Police

received a call regarding a fightbetween two men at a Hauturuaddress.

This was followed by furtherinformation that one of the menhad obtained a firearm andfired shots into the air.

The Armed Offenders Squadand Police from Te Awamutu,Kawhia, Te Kuiti, Cambridgeand Hamilton attended thescene.

At 9.35am the AOS appre-hended a 19-year-old male with-

out incident. He was arrestedfor discharging a firearm,threatening to kill an occupantand threatening to kill Police.

The offender appeared incourt and has been remandeduntil later in the month.

Cambridge-Te Awa-mutu Harness RacingClub’s meeting on thegrass at Waipa Race-course on December 29suffered its second ‘badbreak’ in consecutiveyears when the heavensopened early morning.

Last year a power cutcurtailed the meetingafter three races andthis year persistent rainthroughout the pro-gramme threatened to‘wash out’ the meeting.

But despite the del-uges, the club carried onin resolute fashion, withoffcourse turnover inthe region of one milliondollars well up on thelast full picnic harnessmeeting in 2007 andoncourse turnover simi-lar at around one hun-dred thousand dollars.

A highlight of the daywas the celebrity sulkyrace, taken out by one ofthe local (ex) jockeys in

Gary Grylls.In typical laconic

style, Grylls informedhis army of supportersduring the victory inter-view that once ‘Boot’(fellow local jockeyMark Sweeney) racedup outside him and thehorse driven by GeorgeSimon (race commen-tator and ‘gun’ amateurdriver) broke up, hethought he was in with agood show.

He and his pacer hadto survive a spirited lateburst from New ZealandCup winning driver,David Butcher and hischarge but kept up aheady drive to lead allthe way.

A gold coin collectionwas taken up forGracelands in conjunc-tion with the race, rais-ing around $1000 (withsome donors who hadGrylls on their ticketwalking away withsome decent donatedprizes).

Te Awamutu rower GrahamOberlin-Brown (20) is the first personto twice be named as a finalist in theWestpac Halberg Awards EmergingTalent category.

His initial nomination came in2007 when the new category wasintroduced, recognising his Worldtitle in the Under 23 lightweightdouble with Peter Taylor.

This time Graham’s nominationfollows his win in the U23 WorldChampionships in Germany.

The Te Awamutu Rowing Clubmember was victorious in the light-weight single, dominating everyrace, so is a worthy favourite for thetitle this year.

The other finalists in the Emerg-ing Talent category are Jossi Wells(skiing), Paige Hareb (surfing), andChris Rahardja (karate).

The category identifies talentedNew Zealand athletes under 21 yearsold and offers a $25,000 scholarship(which was considerably more lastyear as it was invested).

‘‘So I’m proud to be named as afinalist again and if I come away withthe win it will be the cherry on thetop of a fantastic year.’’

He will be joining the likes of theEvers-Swindells, Valerie Vili, TomAshley, Scott Dixon, the Kiwis andthe All Blacks at the black tie eventon February 3 in the Vector Arena.

Graham rejoins the New ZealandRowing Summer Squad next week.

Over the Christmas-New Yearbreak he has been trialling a numberof singles.

‘‘I was one of four New Zealandrowers to be approached to try outthree different boats - Canadian,Chinese and New Zealand built ver-sions.

‘‘Each has subtle differenceswhich are going to influence my finalchoice.

‘‘I hope to decide by February 1which is the best so that I can getcomfortable in the boat that I willrow at the North Island and NewZealand Rowing Championships.’’

Graham has also been triallingsporting apparel for Frankton basedcompany ‘Suno’.

As well as spending plenty of timeon ergs (rowing machines) his‘alternative’ training over recentmonths has included cycling (with TeAwamutu Sports, completing theLake Taupo Challenge in 4:19:30) andkayaking on Lake Karapiro.

Three of New Zealand’s four European-based professional riders have entered the 2009 RaboPlus elite national road championships in Te Awamutu on January 9-11. Tour de France star Julian Dean, Greg Henderson and local Tim Gudsell head a classy fi eld in Sunday’s 180km men’s elite road race on the Puahue circuit. Dean, the defending champion, desperately wants to keep his black and white Kiwi jersey. The winner of the men’s elite race is entitled to wear the national jersey in European competition.`Ì really want to win it again so I can wear the jersey again in Europe, it’s great for me, for our sport and our country,’’ says Dean, who received considerable media and public attention during the major cycle tours in Europe, particularly the Tour de France. The Waikato/Bay of Plenty Centre representative comes up against largely the best in the country. Henderson (Otago) was the 2004 UCI world champion in the scratch race and a gold medallist at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in the points race. He has won eight World Cup events and won silver with Hayden Roulston at the 2003 Madison World Championships and fi fth in the recent World Championships. He was fourth in the points race in Athens. Waikato/BOP’s Gudsell, who rides for Francaise des Jeux, will be hoping the hometown crowd and his familiarity of the course will give him an edge over his rivals. RACE ROUTEThe picturesque course for the 2009 RaboPlus elite women’s and elite and under-23 men’s road races has many vantage points for spectators.Race director Don Buchanan says spectators are encouraged to line the route in support of the riders but are urged to set up `camp’ well before the races start to prevent any traffi c jam and to assist with safety issues. The complete course (25km) around the Puahue district is surrounded by stunning rural views with Maungatautari as a backdrop.The start/fi nish line is in Te Awamutu outside Ingham Honda in Arawata Street. The course takes the riders out along Cambridge Road, hanging a right into Long Road and through to Puahue Road, past the Puahue School before taking another right turn into Parawera Road. There are a couple of long drags on Long Road towards Puahue and from Parawera Road to the main Arapuni/Kihikihi Road. The riders take a left turn into Monckton Road, then tackle the hilliest section of the course on Parklands Road, onto Chamberlain Road, Cambridge Road and back to the turn-around point at Ingham Honda. The 120km elite women’s road race, starting at 1pm on Saturday, January 10, takes in four laps of the course. The 180km elite men’s and under-23 road race, starting at 10am on Sunday, January 11, covers six laps of the course. Buchanan says the road races will operate on a full race convoy, with centre or trade teams service vehicles. Riders may use radios and be in contact with their team manager and feeding will be undertaken from team vehicles. A feed station will also be provided.

TIME TRIAL FRIDAY The cycling extravaganza kicks off at 1pm on Friday, January 9 with the individual time trial. Both the 25km elite women’s and 40km elite and under-23 men’s events are held over out-and-back courses starting and fi nishing on Bank Street (near the intersection with Young Street). The men travel along Punui Road to the Te Kawa West crossroads, straight ahead into Ouruwhero Road for another 5kms to the turn-around point, and back to the fi nish in Bank Street. The women’s turn-around point is before the Te Kawa West Crossroads.

All I can hope for is to do a good race and hope it’s good enough.’’ Beijing Olympian Joanne Kiesanowski (Christchurch) is hot favourite to win the 120km women’s road race. The New Zealand No.1 women’s road rider did not contest last year’s nationals as she was in America preparing for the third round of the track World Cup in Los Angeles. Former Olympian Melissa Holt, who nowadays

rides for Te Awamutu Sports Cycling Club, is the defending road race and time trial champion. Although concentrating more on multi-sport events these days, Holt will not give up her crown without putting up a huge fi ght. East Coast North Island’s Serena Sheridan is the current leader of the national women’s points series and cannot be overlooked. The host town will also be represented by two of the country’s rising stars Rushlee Buchanan and Emma Petersen. Buchanan won the national U19 road race in 2006 and Petersen is the reigning U19 champion. Highly-ranked rower Sonia Waddell is getting better and better each cycling race she contests. Keep an eye out for her too. The men’s under-23 road race is wide open. Those likely to feature are Eliot Crowther (Waikato/BOP), James Williamson (Subway), Shem Rodger (Waikato/BOP) and Clinton Avery (Waikato/BOP). Avery is the defending U23 time trial champion, Williamson won the national club championship in October last year, with Rodger placing third, and Crowther leads the national series. Others U23 riders with Te Awamutu connections competing are American criterium champion Peter Rennie, Logan Hunn, Brad Carter, Mark Langlands and Ryan Wills. Those likely to fi ght out honours in the elite men’s 40km time trial on Friday are Paul Odlin (Star & Garter), Gudsell and Gordon McCauley (Subway). Defending women’s 25km time trial champion Melissa Holt can expect strong opposition from Rachel Mercer (Team Cyclosport) and Serena Sheridan
