Wishing you all a very Merry ChristmasMerry Christmasand safe motoring!
In October last year Mazdareleased the facelift modelof the CX-7. The company
says since then sales of theturbocharged performanceSUV have virtually doubled. No doubt buyers realised
the price tag of well under$50,000 is very competitivecompared to rival SUVs, andother models in the Mazdafamily. The increased interest in
the 2.3-litre turbocharged CX-7 Limited has been followedby the launch of a sharplypriced $38,995 GSX model.I drove the new model
from Wilksbrooke Motors, and even sales staff therewere surprised at the fantas-tic final price for this vehicle. It has been launched
alongside the new Mazda6(see opposite page) andoffers buyers a real choice inthe family sedan segment. The GSX has SUV design
and practicality without thecost and other penalties ofall-wheel-drive.It is powered by the 2.5
litre engine used in the 6,which is significantly more
fuel efficient than theturbocharged version in theCX-7 Limited.Other differences include
smaller 17 inch alloys, bodycolour door handles, no frontfog lamps, fabric seats withmanual adjustment and amid-range four speakersound system. The engine has a unique
tuning for the CX-7 GSX, withthe emphasis on mid-rangetorque.
While power is downslightly to 120kW, and peaktorque is 205Nm — ratherthan 226Nm — it becomesavailable at 2000rpm ratherthan 4000rpm.The f ive-speed
Activematic transmission hastaller gearing and, coupledwith being 209kg lighter thanthe turbocharged model, the,CX-7 GSX can achieve 9.4litres per 100km.Safety features are
shared between both modelswith six airbags, DynamicStability Control and a revers-ing camera integrated into a4.1-inch screen as standard. The CX-7 GSX still has
such upmarket features asadjustable leather steeringwheel with audio controls, a60/40 split fold rear seat, remote central locking withdual stage unlocking andclimate control air condition-ing.

Newmodel top selling Mazda6N
ew for Mazda for 2010 is the 6 — consistently NewZealand‘s top selling mid-size car since it waslaunched in 2002.
The Mazda6 has caught the imagination of NewZealanders with its bold styling, driving dynamics, finishquality and by offering the choice of sedan, five-doorhatch and wagon body styles.Engines and transmissions are largely unchanged
with the eager 100kW 2.0-litre and 125kW 2.5-litrevariations of the MZ-R engine. However, Mazda expects fractional improvements in
fuel economy through further optimisation of engine andtransmission electronic controls. The main changes are cosmetic, providing a sharper
edge to the Mazda6 with a redesigned five-point grilleand new bumpers, revised lighting including new rearcombination lights and new alloy wheel designs.Mazda says the new lighting themes with chrome-
plated inner bezels and round fog lamps within the sideintakes are inspired by the Nagare concept car.Inside there is new fabric trim for the GLX and GSX
models and gloss piano black surfaces replace mattesilver framing around the centre console and steeringwheel controls while chrome detailing is new for theinner door handles, gear lever, climate control and audiodials. The model range comprises eight models, seven ofthem with the five-speed Activematic transmission andthe sole six-speed manual model being a Limited SportHatch.Across the board, Mazda says the price increase
averages out at $251. Pricing on the entry level 2.0-litreGLX models is unchanged with the entry level GLX manualsedan at $40,295 and the flagship Sport Hatch Limited isnow $49,995.GSX models are up by $600 which reflects the
increase in equipment with the addition of automaticheadlights, rain sensor wipers and a sliding centre
armrest which had previously been exclus-ive to the Limited models. The Limited new gains an auto-
dimming rear vision mirror as well as alloypedals and a hill start assist function hasbeen added on the manual Sport HatchLimited. The key specification change is the
introduction of Bluetooth phone integra-tion as standard equipment.
Minor suspension tuning changes getthe Mazda6 to run straighter and absorbbumps better with a smoother and quieterride. The Mazda6 already boasts a 5-star
EuroNCAP crash test rating and all modelsare equipped with six airbags, DynamicStability Control and Traction Control, seatbelt reminder and child restraintanchor points.

TC130510DB04BWHY I look so worried is that I’m on the wrong side of the car — and the wrong side of theroad — to really enjoy driving my Citroen C4 in France.
TC130510DB04ACOOL EH? Somewhere on the beach at Port Isaac (Portwenn for Doc Martin fans — hishouse is on the hill) is our brand new VW Polo.
TC130510DB04CNEW Kia Ceed at the Ben Nevis lookout.
Mywife Robyn and I recently returned from fiveweeks in the UK and France — some of whichincluded driving tours, which I was really
looking forward to.Armed with a borrowed SatNav with UK and
French maps I was confident this would be a breeze. Our first experience was in Scotland where our
Ford Mondeo was upgraded to a new Kia Ceed diesel. At that stage there were three of us and the Kia
proved terrific. Our plan was to wend our way fromEdinburgh to Inverness, and wend we did as we keptfinding places we wanted to visit. Scotland’s roadswere great — their 70mph motorway speed limitmade for good times and roads were great. It was just as well as a certain cloud of volcanic
ash meant we couldn’t fly from Inverness to London— so I drove. It took 13 hours, but we saw a bit of thecountryside. We did 1400 miles in the Kia and itproved quite economical — which was just as well asdiesel cost the equivalent of $2.60 per litre. The next experience was stressful to say the least. We picked up our Citroen C4 from Gare du Nord in
Paris, expecting a short drive to the Boulevard duPeripherique and into the French countryside.Firstly the SatNav had no idea where it was inside
the city. Secondly we only had a tourist map. Thirdlydriving in Paris is mad at the best of times, and worsewhen you are lost.It took an hour of trial and error to clear the city,
but I was proud of not denting the car negotiating theunmarked roundabouts. I did hit three curbs onRobyn’s side on the first day however, two at speed. The French do like to build chicanes to control trafficentering villages and towns.Next drama was coming across a toll road and not
knowing what to do. We simply stopped and waitedfor a friendly motorist to explain ‘Visa card’ and wewere on our way.Roads are top notch, again just as well as we did
nearly 800km in two days —much of it at 140km/h inthe slow lane. The French like speed. Our last car wasa new VW Polo. I had forgotten what it was like todrive such an underpowered car.
Any fuel saving advantages of the 1200cc, threecylinder engine were soon outweighed by the fact myfoot was flat to the floor nearly all the time. There were other times on the backroads though
that I did appreciate how small the Polo was — I’vedriven on farm races that were wider than the roads. But I must say a car, a SatNav and plenty of time
is the way to travel. We’re already planning next time.

In the heart of the New Forest in the southof England is Beaulieu, a mecca forpetrolheads — but with so much more.I have to thanks my wife Robyn for finding
this gem.Formerly the Great Gatehouse of Beaulieu
Abbey, Palace House has been home to theMontagu family since 1538.Of main interest was the National Motor
Museum, plus associated exhibitions (whichwill feature in DriveBy next month) World ofTop Gear, ProMotion and James BondExperience. But its more than just cars — Beaulieu
also has Palace House, the Abbey, gardens,Secret Army Exhibition, a monorail, veteranbus, food — plus many more things to do.It really is a great day out for the whole
family if you are ever near that part of the
world. We trained from London, but a rentalcar would be a better option.Check www.beaulieu.co.uk for all the
