Drugs at centre of ‘malicious complaint’ BY DEAN TAYLOR It appears the incident centred on the woman’s bad reaction to the drug methamphetamine and we are looking at the most appropriate action to take in relation to preventing drug-related harm and the wasting of police time. INSPECTOR PAUL CARPENTER, Western Waikato Area Commander Police says drugs appear to be at the centre of a malicious com- plaint in which a woman in Te Awamutu claimed she was threat- ened with a gun in a domestic dispute that resulted in officers from across the district being brought in to manage the incident. Western Waikato Area Com- mander, Inspector Paul Carpenter said a 33-year-old woman may face charges following the incident last Monday night that saw streets cordoned off and train traffic stopped. At the time of going to press last Wednesday evening, Te Awa- mutu Courier had been informed the investigation was still under way and ran the front page story which included that the alleged offender was Toki Takerei, and that he was wanted by police. As soon as police confirmed on Thursday morning that their investigations had established an alleged domestic dispute between the woman and Mr Takerei did not occur in the way outlined by her, we posted a correction on our Facebook page to let people know the truth. Within a day that post had reached over 9000 Facebook users. The Courier apologises to Mr Takerei and his family for the grief and embarrassment this has caused, but was acting on the best Police information at the time. Police say they have spoken to Mr Takerei and are confident he did not threaten the woman with a firearm.‘‘Investigators would like to acknowledge the co-operation of this man and his family in this matter,’’ said Inspector Carpenter. He said given the serious nature of the allegations, the police’s response involved deploying members of the Wai- kato Armed Offenders Squad. ‘‘No shots were fired during the incident, however tear gas and distraction devices were used to assist in the safe clearing of the property. ‘‘It appears the incident centred on the woman’s bad reac- tion to the drug methamphetamine and we are looking at the most appropriate action to take in relation to preventing drug-related harm and the wasting of police time.’’ Water supply concerns BY GRANT JOHNSTON Council staff were keeping a close eye on rainfall figures as prolonged dry weather had them considering raising Te Awamutu and Pirongia townships’ supply alert level again this week. At Tuesday’s service deliv- ery committee meeting, group manager service delivery Barry Bergin said while demand was being managed, with the help of residents conserving water, supply was causing concern. ‘‘All communities in Waipa are conserving water appro- priately. Residents are being responsible, with demand not peaking despite the dry conditions.’’ Mr Bergin said council was working with all its cus- tomers to manage demand. Fonterra was recording half its normal usage. ‘‘Mangauika Stream on Mt Pirongia is at a low flow and we are trying to manage that. ‘‘We have gone to Alert Level 3 for Te Awamutu and Pirongia water supply and are considering going to Level 4. We are working with Waikato Regional Council looking to stabilise the flows going into the source.’’ Cr Clare St Pierre asked if recent rainfall had helped, but Mr Bergin said only 2mm had been recorded at Te Tahi at that stage (Tuesday). Rain . . . for most page 5 RULES BAN USE OF SPRINKLERS The current Water Alert Level 3 means there can be no use, at any time, of sprinklers or water systems in Te Awa- mutu or Pirongia. Hand held hosing is still allowed. There are also restrictions on outdoor water use for com- mercial and non-residential properties in Te Awamutu and Pirongia, including reserves and sport facilities. Council parks staff will also be restricting their use of water. Level 4 is the highest water alert level. Last summer, Wai- pa went to Alert Level 3 and was very close to going to Alert Level 4, but water con- servation by residents helped to avoid that situation. Alert Level 4 would mean no outside non-essential water use by domestic, commercial and non-residential water users. This would mean no hoses, sprinklers or irrigation sys- tems could be used unless absolutely essential.

KATHRYN BADRICK

Golden day in a country townI thought it was high time I used my

SuperGold card, which I received nearly ayear ago, when I visited Te Awamutu.

Not only was I happy the bus trip was afreebee, but was doubly delighted when Istarted to explore your beautiful countrytown.

I spent my first 20 years in Huntly andthen went to live and work in Sydney for 15years. It was back to Auckland for 25 yearsbefore the last six in Hamilton. In all thattime, I realised I had never been to TeAwamutu.

I have travelled the world, so know agreat place when I visit it.

I had a brilliant day, shopping is fantasticand I got a pensioner’s bargain at the opshop — five lovely shirts for $10 all up.

Beat that Hamilton. We oldies love a bargain.Visited the museum and watched a great

historical movie, then the Rose Gardens as Iwaited for my bus back to Hamilton.

I chatted to several locals on the street.what a friendly bunch they all are.

I have to mention the highlight wasfinding the ‘quirky’ (as they called it in myday) Walton Street Cafe.

It is delightful, rustic, full of countryatmosphere, and has great cheaply pricedcoffee and a wonderful reception committee.

The owner’s little girl greeted me at thedoor, took me by the hand, and off we wentto meet the dog, and her grandparents, whomade me feel so welcome.

I don’t know how many times they shook

my hand, and were brilliant examples ofcountry hospitality.

The owner was a sweetheart and madethis old boy feel very special. I even got tochat to a local copper on his break.

I shall write a letter to my ‘local paper’,just to tell Hamilton pensioners to wake upand do themselves a favour by taking a bustrip to your delightful town.

I shall tell them they will have awonderful day, and all for the price of acoffee.

So thank you Te Awamutu, you havegiven me an eventful day and I shall put it onmy monthly itinerary to revisit.

And you had an added bonus . . . badlyneeded rain. Great for the farmers.

WAYNE BERRY

Focus on regional transportThe process to look at the future shape of

public transport in the region took another stepwith approval for targeted discussion withstakeholders about the way ahead.

The regional public transport plan develop-ment committee, which includes regional andlocal council representatives, recently discussedissues to be considered in formulating a plan.

These included how much fares contributed tothe costs of buses in the region, fare levels anddiscounts, bus infrastructure and bus brandingand marketing. A draft plan is due to be writtenby the end of the year for public consultation, with a finalised new plan set to be ready foradoption by June next year.

‘‘Staff will hold discussions with a group ofstakeholders before we look at holding widerdiscussions with interested parties and the publicon the way ahead,’’ said committee chairwomanLois Livingston, of Waikato Regional Council.

‘‘Buses are a vital part of regional transportservices, particularly in Hamilton, and theprocess of developing our plan provides anopportunity to look at where any improvements,or adjustments can be made to our operations.

‘‘Once we’re ready for wider consultation,we’ll be keen to hear what interested parties andthe public have to say so we can incorporate theirthinking into our final decisions,’’ said CrLivingston.

Taking pride in KihikihiBY COLIN THORSEN

TC140414SP03

LOOKING OLD: The Lyon Street house before the makeover and felling of the Cyprus trees.

TC140414CT01

LOOKING NEW: Nothing like a new paint job to bring life back to a tired looking property.

Before . . .

. . . and after

The former taxi stand andhouse next to the Star Hotel atKihikihi have been transformedinto a vibrant home.

Property owner BarryAperehama and his extendedfamily live in the house.

They have been saving for anew roof but could never affordthe necessary makeover neededin time for the OrakauCommemorations.

In a wonderful show of com-munity spirit, Kihikihi Residentsand Ratepayers Group took onthe project — approaching theAperehamas who were ‘veryhumbled and excited’ in agreeingfor the project to proceed.

The end result is an amazingtransformation, doing justice tothe $1 million upgrade ofKihikihi’s main street.

‘‘It’s been a wonderfullyrewarding Kihikihi Residentsand Ratepayers project,’’ says

chairman Peter Fraser.‘‘Everyone will agree it’s been

a great result for the owners andthe community.’’

Mr Fraser approached MegaMitre 10, who agreed to supportthe project by supplying theWattyl paint in heritage colours.

Chemwash came to the partywith a substantial discount forwaterblasting the house.

Kihikihi Rotary paid for thewaterblasting and new spoutingon the office of the old taxi stand,as well as supplying all thepainting equipment (brushes, scrapers etc).

Mr Aperehama’s brother-in-law Nako Maile, owner of MarloPainting Ltd, volunteered hisservices free to paint the houseand taxi stand.

Plumber Murray Gane thensent his boys in to erect thespouting for free.

To further tidy the property,Mr Fraser approached his sons,Hamish (who owns Spectrum

Tree Works) and fellow arboristCameron, who agreed to fell thesix massive cyprus trees on theproperty.

Waikato Tree Services sup-plied a chipper for the day, oper-ated by local identity Greg TeHuia.

Now that the trees have gone, the family say they are lovingbeing able to live outdoors.

‘‘The trees always made thatarea shaded and cold. We can nowenjoy having a barbecue,’’ saysMr Aperehama.

Mr Aperehama’s sister ,Theresa, says she is so proud ofher brother.

‘‘Barry works such long hours, six days a week as a truck driver,as well as looking after his part-ner who has on-going healthissues awaiting a hip operation, and mum helps around the housetoo.’’

It was a win, win for allconcerned. . . Kihikihi’s pridelives on.

Christian Christian CommentComment

Andrew Vossen - North End Church

In 1904-06 in Wales there was a uniqueevent termed ‘The Welsh Revival’ wherethousands of people’s lives changed for goodafter experiencing an encounter with Godsimilar to biblical records in the Book of Acts. After that time many missionaries travelledthe world sharing about this event andestablishing churches that were both of theHoly Spirit and passionate about the messageof Jesus Christ — a new movement ofchurches with many similarities that areknown as Pentecostal Churches. Some ofthese missionaries established Acts ChurchesNZ — so as far as churches go, North EndChurch was a late arrival.

Carrying that same passion and convic-tion, Brian and Hannah Tamaki left TokoroaApostolic Church to pioneer a church in theirhometown. After months of discussion andprayer, in 1985 the Tamaki family took astep of faith and moved to Kihikihi. Theyrented the St John’s Ambulance Hall, wherepublic meetings began in April. Twelvepeople were in church on that day. Growthwas such, that by September the churchmoved to the Intermediate School Hall andtransported the children back to the St John’sHall for their Sunday School program. Aneldership team was established and thechurch began paying their pastor a salary.

In 1986 the church purchased landfunded largely by the eldership. No one knewhow to build a church on it, but the convictionwas always... ‘‘Trust God for each successivestep and take a step forward whenever wecould.’’ Building started in January 1988 andthe opening was in October.

In 1989 God called the Tamakis toministry in Rotorua and Pastor Grant andJoanne Reid commenced leading the church.

In 1992 the Rosetown CounsellingCentre vision grew out of a recognised needin the community. In 1993 a building wassourced and renovated by church membersand within three months was opened forclients and has grown and continues under itsown Charitable Trust.

Pastors Charles and Sally Nikora cameand led the church at the beginning of 1996.Due to the loss of his wife late 1999 PastorCharles ended his ministry and Pastor GaryBotting led the church for the next two years.

In April 2002 ,at one of its more difficulttimes, Pastor Andrew and Judy Vossen fromTaranaki were asked to come and lead thechurch. In 2004 the church entered intodiscussions with two other local churches tocombine resources to better strengthen theirservice to the community.

During the 30 year journey the church hashad many highlights and difficulties, butbuilding on the endurance and sacrifice ofthose before us, the original vision andmotivation to be a positive, life transforminginfluence in our community remains at theheart of all we do. As original founder RogerPeake used to say, ‘‘So we continue on . . .’’

The arrival of any decent rainfall last weekwas hailed with thunder and lightning.

An electrical storm in the early hours ofThursday saw hundreds of lightning strikesacross the Waikato, while some boomingthunder woke plenty of Te Awamutu residents.

MetService meteorologist John Law saysthere were around 1000 lightning strikes acrossthe country overnight. ‘‘About 600 of those splitthe air south and west of Hamilton.’’

The storm woke Pokuru’s Storer familyabout midnight. Michelle Storer says herchildren usually enjoy storms.

‘‘But they were terrified by the constantflashes and deafening thunder claps.’’

The storm also left some lasting damage.‘‘We think lightning struck the house. The

pole fuse was blown and a television, cordlessphone and computermodem were all fried.’’

While her husbandRicky appreciated fineweather for hiscontracting business, therain was sorely neededfor their lifestyle block.

Some areas receivedmore rain than others onThursday, which left afew farmers frustrated.

Pokuru farmerVanessa Gold says earlyrain had pretty muchbypassed their property.

‘‘We could see it goingright around us, whichwas very frustrating.’’

Ohaupo residents tothe north received 50mmor more, while those tothe south of Te Awamutureceived as little as 5mm.

Kihikihi weatherwatcher MargaretNicholls says theyreceived just 5mm onThursday.

Insightful story of atoxic relationship

Te Awamutu resident CherryGraham has self-published her firstbook, But . . . I Love You.

Her story describes how shelived through toxic verbal andpsychological abuse after meetingher ‘soulmate’ on Waiheke Island in2001.

They spent seven years together, before eventually settling down inTe Kuiti.

‘‘However, I realised after twoyears this period had just been the‘honeymoon’ stage and my partnerwas harbouring other secrets, inaddition to a Jekyll-and-Hyde per-sonality.

‘‘I attempted to leave twice withmy babies, but was pulled back eachtime for the sake of our family.

‘‘My partner used emotionalblackmail . . . ‘But . . . I Love You’.

With her health deterioratingand at a loss to find any medicalanswers, she eventually becamebedridden.

‘‘Through a timely incident, andwith the care of my parents, I slowlyrecovered and decided to use thisopportunity to separate from mypartner for good.

‘‘I was only to discover that hewas about to punish me in the mostpainful way imaginable, by takingthe children away.’’

Distraught, she sought legal help andwas enlightened about her former part-ner’s character by a professional.

‘‘The penny dropped, and all the yearsof his confusing, contradictory behavi-our, mind games, subtle intimidation, innuendos and toxic speech, fell intoplace with this disturbing revelation.’’

But.. I Love You is an insightful storyfor anyone living in a toxic relationship.

‘‘Verbal abuse is classed worse than

physical abuse.‘‘Leaving no marks to hold the abuser

to account, yet it can completely annihil-ate a victim from the inside out and caneventually destroy physically.

‘‘It is also a form of psychologicalemotional and soul abuse against anotherhuman being.’’

BY COLIN THORSEN

Puahue’s motocross team was the toast ofthe school after being second overall at thePrimary/Intermediate Challenge at Roto-rua.

It was a mighty achievement in only thesecond year Puahue has entered a team inthe hotly-contested event.

About 50 schools from throughout theNorth Island competed, including Hauturu,Te Kowhai, Onewhero, Pirongia and Ohaupoprimary schools from the Waikato.

The primary competition was split intosix classes over two tracks.

Puahue’s team of 10 keen, young riderscomprised Ethan Fladgate, ChristianFladgate, Caitlin Fladgate, Hayden Fladgate,Tom Empsom, Harry Empsom, ChaseEmpsom, Riley Deakin, Luke Gurnick andCaylem Deakin.

Points gained by the entire team contri-buted to their school gaining second overall.

Making the podium were Ethan Fladgate(first in 8-10 year 85cc class) and ChaseEmpsom (fifth in trail class).

Caylem Deakin, 5, competed in his firstrace on his 50cc bike.

Te Awamutu Motorcycle Club presidentGraham Adams, who has kept his eye on theyoung local riders and encouraging them atlocal events throughout the year, was amongthe first to congratulate them on their efforts.

Fantastic form secures trophyGarry Bowman won the Secretary’s

Bowman was in fantastic form duringhis three rounds, coughing up only twobogeys. He also struck the jackpot withtwos on nine and 16.
