4. Long Answer Questions:
(a) Invention of the wheel was a turning point in the history of mankind. The humans who
used to travel on foot, now, could cover long distances with carts fixed on wheels. Another
big step was the invention of steam engine which made it possible to carry people and goods
over long distances. Now bullet trains and aeroplanes have brought people, living across the
world, much closer.
(b) Railways are one of the most convenient means of carrying goods and people over long
distances. In India, the railways were introduced by the British. India's first train ran in 1853
between Mumbai and Thane. By now many superfast trains have been introduced in our
country such as Rajdhani Express and Shatabdi Express. Presently, India has the second
largest railway network in Asia and its railway network is the fourth largest in the world.
(c) Waterways are the cheapest means of transport for carrying bulky goods over long
distances. The cheaper cost of transport has encouraged trade in agricultural raw materials
such as cotton, tobacco, rubber, wheat and even mineral ores. Petroleum is carried in ships
called tankers. Vegetables, fruits, meat and dairy products are carried in refrigerated ships.
On the other hand, passenger ships carry people from one place to another. Most of the
world's trade is through ocean and sea routes.

Stanley Steamer, Alena Steam Car and Davis Steam Car were such steam cars. But with the
