Khemit Korner — Highlights of our recent journeys
The world is watching the events happening in Egypt yet again… But are they seeing and hearing the truth?
KSAM Newsletter – November 2013
June 2013
Members of the Khemit School Team have been busy the last few weeks on field trips and research at the
Siwa Oasis and in Upper Egypt. It was enlightening, amazing and fun! We hope to add many of the sites
we’ve visited to future journeys and custom adventures.
Egypt has officially lifted the State of Emergncy!
Egypt is well on the road to recovery from 2 years of political instability. Yes—it will be a challenging
and bumpy road, but the recent past has set a stage for positive growth here. Although the media still
often paints a bleak and/or violent picture of life here—I can honestly report that life is bustling here as
always. Any protests are quickly dispersed by security and police forces and Egypt is determined to get
back on its feet financially. In truth, we see far fewer power outages (almost never, compared to the 2-3
times a day that we suffered through when Morsi was in office) and fewer fuel shortage problems.
The sites all over Egypt are empty—and extremely inviting for those who wish to experience them
without the distraction of large crowds.
As stated above, Beatrice, Sadat, Mohamed and Yousef and I have done some extensive traveling over the
last several weeks. The 5 of us went to the Siwa Oasis and discovered a magical place that enable us to
uncover many mysteries, ancient anomalies and enjoy the mny delights the Western Desert has to offer.
We went to several ancient sites, including the Gebel el Mawta tombs, the famous Temple of the Oracle, made
famous by Alexander the Great and the Temple of Amun. We spent a day on a Sahara Desert Safari viewing
fossils of 2 million year old footprints, and an even more ancient whale, a crater formed from an ancient asteroid,
collecting fossils, swimming in fresh and salt water lakes as well as a sunset dip in a healing hot spring—all
culminating with viewing the milky way and billions of stars as we listened to music played by Sadat &
Yousef, and our Bedouin friends and ate a delicious barbecue dinner! Does it get any better?
Beatrice & Sadat and Yousef & I then embarked on an exploration of many “off the beaten path”
areas as well as conducting further research at some of our favorite sites in Upper Egypt.
Together we explored the Valley of the Monkeys on the West Bank of Luxor where we visited the Tomb of Ay. We
also visited the tombs at El Asasif and the Tombs of the Nobles as well as Deir el Medina. We spent a day
exploring the site at Silsila between Kom Ombo and Edfu, an evening at Luxor Temple and a morning at Karnak
before leaving Luxor on our cruise south to Aswan. Here we revisited the Aswan Quarry and Elephantine Island.
We spent an evening at the wonderful Nubian Museum and a morning investigating The Temple of Kalabsha on
Lake Nasser. The highlight of our trip to Aswan was having the Temple of Isis at Philae to ourselves and then
spending the afternoon with a Nubian friend who’s family provided a huge Nubian feast for us!.
