Dear People of Holy Spirit Parish:

“You are my beloved Son, with you I am well pleased.” (Luke 3:22)

We bring our celebration of the Incarnation to a close with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. His baptism marks the begin-ning of Jesus’ public ministry and his appearance on the world stage. Jesus has fully “come into the world.” While our celebra-tion of the Incarnation at liturgy has come to an end, the ex-tension of God’s love and mercy into every part of his creation is not yet complete. But, after the Campus Ministry Conference in Indianapolis this past week it is clear that God’s love and mercy are making tremendous inroads into the heart of Ameri-can secular society.

Zach Laughlin, our campus minister, and I went with nine students to a massive gathering of young people hungry for God. Four fast growing Catholic Campus Ministry organizations came together to sponsor the event: FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students), Connect, Varsity Catholic, and Catholic Campus Ministry. Together they drew over 17,000 students and hundreds of staff, nuns, brothers and priests. The message of the keynote speakers was straight out of to-days’ Gospel: You are God’s beloved child. He is well pleased with you. Do not let anyone or any experience separate you from your Father’s love.

Of the many powerful speakers I think first of Fr. Sean Kilcawley who addressed the vast problem of pornography addiction among young people. He said we must bring the healing mercy of God to the wound. He shared the story of a man with this addiction coming to him. He learned that the man was first exposed on the family computer when he was a fourth grader. Fr. Sean asked the man: “If Jesus were in the room when that happened, what would he say.” The man replied “Jesus would have been angry, told me I was a sinner and that I would go to hell.” Fr. Sean replied to the man: “You were just a kid, looking for a game, and pornog-raphy purveyors hooked you by linking pornography to your game site. Jesus would be very angry at the producers of the pornography. But he would weep for you, hold you, and promise he would never give up on you.” Fr. Sean said the man began to weep. The incarnation of God’s love was extended into one more heart.

The impact of this Conference will be one of the streams of insight coming togeth-er at our Parish Convocation this Thursday. At Thursday’s gathering each parish committee will share the Vision for its ministry area they have developed over the last three months through study, prayer and discussion. The Pastoral Council will bring the insights gained from it’s reading of Sherry Weddell’s book Forming Inten-

tional Disciples. These statements will be presented to all of us for our Lenten re-flection, discussion and amendment. Then, after the whole parish has been heard, the final draft will be presented for ratification by the parish at Pentecost.

At Thursday’s meeting committees will also have their first pass at taking part in the budgeting process. It will take several years for us to develop a budgeting pro-cess that allows parish members involved in ministries to decide how the contribu-tions of parishioners should be used to support ministry. This Thursday, for a first time, committees will see what the budget developed by the Finance Council for their area has been in the past. Committees are asked to present budgets for the coming fiscal year to the Finance Council by March. The Pastoral Council will give final approval of the budget at its June Meeting.

I see this visioning process and budgeting process as concrete ways we are saying to our people: You are God’s beloved child. He is well pleased with you. He has placed his dreams in your heart and he trusts you.

Christmas Dinner Thanks

The Christmas Dinner Team wishes to thank all members of Holy Spirit Parish who helped make our Christmas Dinner a success. If you ordered the food, sliced the ham, helped prepare and serve the meal, made cookies, helped set up the hall, worked in the kitchen or drove meals to those homebound, we have received so many messages of thanks and reports of how much the meal meant to those who joined us. We are all so blessed with your generous hearts. The extra food was shared with the Salvation Army, who were so appreciative as well.

We will have a wrap up meeting on Sunday, Jan. 29 follow-ing the 8 a.m. Mass. Any suggestions for next year will be accepted.

Kena Owen from LPi, our bulletin printer, will be in our office the week of January 14th, securing new ads for our bulletin. Your par-ticipation makes our bulletin successful, and you attract customers! Contact her at the rectory office, 344-9117.

This past week, Father Steve and I took nine of our students to the SEEK conference in Indianapolis, IN. As you can see from the front cover, there were a little more than a handful of students in attendance—there were 17,000+! The confer-ence was a big Catholic jamboree, composed of some of the top Catholic speakers around, including: Fr. Mike Schmitz, Dr. Scott Hahn, Dr. Ed Sri, Emily Wilson, and Sarah Swafford (to name a few). Our days were filled with going to Mass, going to smaller break-out sessions, visiting the various ven-dors, and getting to spend time together to reflect on what we learned—or who we had the privilege of meeting! In all, just as Fr. Steve has been emphasizing the past few weeks in his homilies, the conference proposed that the foundation of our faith needs to rest upon having a personal relationship with Jesus, forming this faith in community, and then shar-ing it with others!

Christmas Quarter ends this week with the Baptism of the Lord! Thank you to everyone who has been praying for our families and parish as we tried this out this year! Our intention was to empower parents to actively pass on the faith at home — and for our parish to be a source of resource and active support! We celebrated First Reconciliation, 2 holy days of obligation, Christmas, Holy Family Game Night, Epiph-any Party, distributed Reverse Advent items, served at Salvation Army Hope Center, and today Baptism of the Lord — all together with the entire parish! Faith Formation isn’t just for children! It’s for all of us! Thanks for your commitment over the last 2 months of seasons! Our children are on *Winter Break* this coming week and return to Wednesday nights on Wednesday, 23 January. Keep praying for our parish!
