We are honored to have Dr. Dn. Stephen Muse with us this evening, and it’s a wonderful blessing to have him with us. He gave a clergy retreat over in Olyphant today, and tomorrow he’ll be giving a faculty retreat, and he’ll be giving a personal retreat in Taylor [inaudible] on Saturday, a five-minute trip from Atlanta at that )me. Dr. Dn. Stephen is a wonderful scholar and Orthodox theologian, being able to synthesize a lot of the seemingly disparate parts of modern culture, helping us to understand what’s useful in our Orthodox life and how to u)lize those things that we know in our society in an Orthodox context, and he does a very good job at synthesizing and helping us to understand how to look at certain principles and techniques in modern society and how to use them in an Orthodox way, which is very helpful for us, not only on a therapeu)c level, but a spiritual level as well. I’mveryhappytobeabletosharethiswithusthisevening.TheShroudissomethingI’vebeeninterestedinsince1976.IdiscoveredtheShroudofTurinwhileatePrinceton,atseminary,aProtestantseminary,whichwaskindofastrangewaytodiscoverit,butwhenIlookedatthefaceofthenega)veoftheshroud,whichI’llshowyou—you’veprobablyallseenthispart—theShrouditself,theactualimage—whenyoutakeapictureofit,thenega)veandtheposi)ve,thisisoneofthefirstfivethings.WhenIlookedatthatface,somehowIsaidthisisthefaceofthehumanChrist.Ineverhaveletgoofthat,evenwhentheydidthecarbon-da)ngofit.Ihadheardthis,butIjustcouldn’tbelieveit.Ofcourse,thatbasically,thebiochemisthasbeendebunked,becausestrangelyenoughtheytookpartsoftherepairedShroudandthencarbon-datedtwodifferentones.

Dn.Stephen:Okay.Allright.Yes,it’samuddypicture.Butifyoulookatit,hehasapalliumon.It’sbasicallyatoga.HelookslikeaRomanfigure,nodifferentthananyotherpain)ngsthatyouwouldfindofRomans.Soexceptforthefactthatit’sinabiblicalpictureandhe’scarryinghispallet—he’spickeduphisbedandhe’swalking—thisisnotapicturethatweknowfromiconography.ThisisapictureofaRoman.It’sakindofculturalprojec)on,whichwedoallthe)me.WehavethehippieJesusinAmerica,sothisisreallynotawholelotdifferent.

Here,totherightofthesceneofthehealingoftheparaly)c,isoneofChriststretchinghisarmouttoPeter.Thisissavinghimfromthewavesofthesea.Thisisinthesamecollec)onwhichisaverypreciousonefromDura-Europos.Thiswasfromahousechurch,fromthethird

century.Itcouldholdaboutahundredpeople,anditwaspreservedundermudin258duringaPersiana[ack.Everythingwasburied,soit’ssortoflikePompeii.Allthesepicturesonthemurals,thebap)stry,wasallpreserved.Thesepain)ngsdatetoaround235AD,solet’skeepinmindthatSt.Irenaeusdiesin202.

WehavealivinglinktoSt.Igna)us,St.Paul,theApostleJohn,JesusChrist.Imean,aclear200years,sowe’reveryclosetothelivingtes)monyofthefirstcentury,whichIalwaysliketotellfolks:thisnonsenseabout“didJesusexist?”andallthisstuffthatgetsoura[en)on,youknow,peopletakethisseriously.Wehavealiving,historicallink,withsomanydifferentverifica)ons,andIliketoremindfolksthatthischurch,thisac)vechurch,ofahundredpeople,withabap)stry,fullywithicons,butnotthekindweknow,wasveryclosetothefirstcentury.Thisexisted—let’ssee;letmeshowyou—here’stheGoodShepherd.ThisisfromtheDura-Europoshousein235.Itishardtosee,butallofthesearethesame.Thisisfromthebap)stry.

Keepinmindthat,atthisplace,therewasagarbagedump,andtheyfoundpartsoftextsthatwerethesameastheDiatesseronofTa)an,120-180AD,andalsoaeucharis)ctextthat’ssocloselyrelatedtothelatefirstandearly[second]centuryDidachethattheycouldactuallyfillingaps.Sothiswasfromagarbagedump.We’reveryclosetothebeginningsofChris)anityandknownowthatthisliteraturewhichissoprecioustousnowwasinthegarbagedump.

Samaritanwomanatthewell.Youcanseehowimmenselycolorfulthiswas,whatabeau)fulparishchurchthiswas.Andthisisthebap)stry,allcoveredwithrich,intensecolor.TheSamaritanwomanatthewell,that’sthereconstruc)onofit.Andnow,thisisanaerialviewshowinghowDura-Europoswaslaidout.Thisis235AD.Whatdoesitsuggesttoyou,knowingthatthisisapictureoflifein235AD,inapartoftheRomanEmpirethatforabout60yearsexitedtheRomanEmpire,thePalmyranEmpire?(Syria,Egypt,andthatarea,forabout50years,wasoutoftheRomanEmpire.)Whatyouseehere—youmaynotbeabletoreaditfromhere,butyouhavethetempleofZeus,Artemis,Chris)anhousechurch,synagogue,praetorium,templeofBaal,Romanbarracks,militarytemple.Therewereeightdifferentlanguagesinthiscity,confirmed.TheyhadGreek,La)n,Aramiac,Hebrew,Parthian,Palmyran,andtwodialectsofPersian:MiddleandSafai)c.Wehaveanimmenselymul)culturalcity.1800yearsbeforewediscoveredmul)culturalismintheUnitedStates.[Laughter]Allofthesedifferenttemplesanddifferentreligionsthatwerecoexis)nginonecity:Jewish,Chris)an,Roman,andtheselanguages.Thisis,inandofitself,afascina)ngdevelopmenttoconsiderasChris)anitybegantotakeroot,howitexistedherewithoutpersecu)onintheRomanEmpireandcontemporaneouswithalltheseotherfaiths.

AnothersourceofearlyChris)anartisinthecatacombsinRome,wherewehavemilesandmilesandmilesofundergroundtunnelswheretheChris)answereburied.Some)mesyouhearthattheyhadserviceshere,andtheymayhave,butI’veseensomethingsthatsuggestthiswasoverblown,more,Iguess,inmoviedramas.Buttheydidhaveicons,andtheywereburialplaces.Whenyoulookinhere,there’ssome15milesoftheseinRome,severaldifferentones.ThisisSanCallisto.Now,whatisthis?

Buteventhoughthosearethemajorityofimages,thereareacouplethatstarttobedifferent.Thisisfourthcentury,discoveredin1905,inthecatacombofCommodilla,oneoftheearliest-knownrepresenta)onsofChristwithabeard,alphaandomegahere.Youcanseeit’sdrama)callychangedfromthat.Here’sone,fourthcenturycatacomb.Sosomethingstartedtohappen.

Sowejusthaveinthebackground:whydiditchange?

Dn.Stephen:Ah,buttheys)llhadpicturesofChrist,buttheyshowedhimasaRoman.You’resugges)ngthatmaybetheyshowedhimasaRoman.Let’sstaywithit.Interes)ng,interes)ng.Okay.Maybetheywouldn’thaveknown.I’mgoingtogiveyouanotherpossibility.Here,FatherbroughtouttheiconthatyouhaveoftheMandylion,anditshowsyouonthegateofEdessa,wherethehistoryofthefaceoftheShroudwasfromthestartoftheninthcentury,andthereareseveralhistoricallyextantpiecesthatletusknowthatwasthecase.

Ofcourse,wehadtheiconnot-made-with-human-hands.WasittheiconofVeronicahere,pressedonthefaceforamoment,orwasittheShroud?AccordingtoJerome,whowasquo)ngtheGospeltotheHebrews,Jesusgavehislinenshroudtothehighpriest’sservanta`ertheResurrec)on,andthenappearedtoJamestheRighteous,whowasoneofhisfamily.Thisisinteres)ng,becauseJames,accordingtothegospel,didn’tbelieveduringJesus’life)me,andofcourseit’sverypowerfulandsuddenwhenhedoesa`erwards.

ChurchhistorianEusebiusgivesusadifferentpicture.Inanearlyfourthcenturytranslatedle[erfromtheSyriacofafirst-centurykingnamedAbgar,whoisdepictedhere,thedocumentsaysthat[therewas]adisciplewhowasnamedThaddeus,oneoftheSeventy,whosefeastdayiscommemoratedAugust21—nottobeconfusedwithSt.Jude,whoisalsocalledThaddeus,oneoftheTwelve.HewasaHebrew,borninthecityofEdessa,andspreadthegospelsthroughoutSyria,andisresponsibleforconver)ngKingAbgartoChris)anity.ThaddeusbroughttothecityofEdessaaclothonwhichtheimageofJesus’actualfacialfeaturesappeared.Thisistheearliestmen)onofsuchanimageoriconofJesus’faceinthehistoricalwri)ngsoftheChurchthatwehave.It’ssaidthatthekingwasmiraculouslyhealedwhenhereceivedit.

EvagriusScholas)cusconfirmsinhisEcclesiasCcalHistoryfromthesixthcenturythatthecityofEdessawasprotectedbyadivinely-wroughtpoetry,animagenotmadewithhumanhands,sentbyJesustoKingAbgar.AndtheremaybeareferencetothisintheHymnofthePearl,whichisadocumentwhichdatesfromabout216AD.It’sa[ributedbythescholarstotheGnos)cpoetBardaisan,fromEdessa,interes)ngly,sameplacewherethefacewas.

AndthisspeaksofJesus’burialgarment—thisisinteres)ng—ofhavingafrontandbackimage,sowehavea216ADreferencefromthecityinwhosehistorythiswasplaced.It’snotjustbeingaface:wholebody.Oneques)onthat’senormouslyinteres)ngisjustwhointheChris)anChurchbecameawarethatsuchanimageexistedsincewehadnocellphonesandallthatstuffandittookalong)metogetsomewhere,sohowdidthiscrosstheRomanEmpireandactuallybeseenanddiscovered?

TherealsowerenoimagesofGodinJudaism,althoughIforgottotellyou,inthatcitythatIshowedyou,wherethe[house-church]was,thesynagoguehadpicturesofanimalsandallkindsofstuff,soitwasn’tfollowingwhatweusuallythinkofinJudaismashavingnopictures.Typically,therewouldnotbeany,butfortheChris)answhobelievethatJesusisGodandhuman,nowtheverybodyoftheLordandhisimagebecomesignificant,alongwiththetransfigura)onofthebodyandthesoulduringlife.Soifwedidn’trepresenttheface—andthisisthewholeiconoclastcontroversythatconfirmsthis—weareinawaydenyingthatthefaceofJesusChristcouldshowusthegloryofGod,throughthenoe)cillumina)onoftheheartandseethisinahumanbeing,sobothhumananddivine.

SotheShroudseemstohaveremainedhiddeninthecityofEdessaforthefirstthousandyears,butitcameouteveryonceinawhile.Nowhereyouseethetypicalrepresenta)onoftheMandylion,theImage-not-made-with-human-hands,andthenthisistheposi)veimageoftheShroud,notthenega)ve,sothat’swhatitlookslikeifyoulookatthelinen.

InIanWilson’sbookontheholyShroud,hesuggeststhattheobjectveneratedbytheMandylionistheShroud.Thatwashissugges)on.OnereasonforthisisthattheSTURP[ShroudofTurinResearchProject]thatstartedtoinves)gatetheShroudin1978usedaspecialtypeofphotographywhichconfirmedthattheholesintheShroudshowedithadbeenfoldedupforyearsandyearssothatonlythefacewouldshow.Soitconfirmsthatifyouhadablood-stainedburialshroudwhichwasuncleantotheJewsandholytotheChris)ans,theonlywaytokeepitistohaveonlythefaceshowing,setitinaframeorsomethingsothatitcouldn’tbedetectedthatthat’swhatitwas.

ThebloodonitwouldhavemadeitforbiddenamongJudaism,andofcoursewhenyouseeThePassionof[the]Christandyouseethewomenmoppingthefloorveryhard,theyweregerngupeverytraceofbloodbecausethatcouldnotbele`.Thiswillbesignificant,too,whenwelookatwhathappensattheendfromtheforensicstudiesofthebloodandalbuminontheShroud,whatitcantellus.

Now,550A.D.,oneofthemostimportanticonsthatexists,andoneoftheearliest,atSt.Catherine’s.Ofcourse,I’mnotsayingthatthisiswhattheyweredoingbyanymeans,butIthink

it’sveryinteres)ngbecausethisisatheologicalpicture,but—thele`sideofthebraincontrolstherightsideofthebody;therightsideofthebraincontrolsthele`side.Weknowthatdogslookintothele`eye.Whydotheylookintothele`eye?

Dn.Stephen:Andwhydotheywanttoknowwhat’sgoingoninyourrightbrain?Becausetheywanttoknowhowyoufeel.Theywanttoknowifyou’resafeandifyoulovethem.Watchtheireyes.Okay,sothishasbeenstudied.Iimaginetherecouldbesomepeoplewhohavethisbrainali[lemixedup,maybele`-handers,Idon’tknow,butthatcouldconfusethedogs,ifyouthinkaboutthat—[Laughter]—butnormallythele`side.Andyoucanaskyourself,too,wheredoyoulook,usually,whenyou’relookingataperson;whicheyedoyoutendtofocuson?

Thisisawhole‘notherareaintermsoflimbicresonance,whatababydoeswhenitlooksatitsmotherandhowyoucanvideothemother’sfaceandshowittothebabyinalife-likeway—[Snap]—thebabywillgointodistresswithinasecond,becauseitrealizesthereisnotthecall-and-responsethatletsitknowit’sincontact.Theliturgybeginsveryearly.Theliturgyforthebabyisalive,andit’sgerngalimbicresonancewhichletsitknowit’swelcome.Ifitdoesn’tgetthatback,itgoesintodistress.

Whichside,letmeaskyou—we’llspeedthisupandI’llshowyousomething—whichoneofthesewouldyouwanttoconfessto?[Laughter]Now,whatthisphotographer’sdoneishasdoubledeachsidetoshowyouwhatyouwereseeinghere,whichisverypowerfulandhitsyouinacoupleofdifferentways,becauseitistouchingbothmercyandcompassionandwelcome,andjudgmentanddispassionateregard.Sotoseeexactlyhowthatis,takethatanddoubleitoverhereandthisiswhatyouget.Thismanisverydifferentfromthisone.Isupposethisisthebishop.[Laughter]Andthisone,itseemstobeJesus“meekandmild,”wholoveseveryoneandweneednotworryaboutthethingsthatweworryaboutallthe)me;he’lljustwelcomeeverybodyandallwillbewell.Actually,thisone’snot—he’sfierce,buthe’snotrepellant.There’sagreatbeautythere,too,yet,alone,theseareprobablyheresy,becausetheydonothavethefully-God,fully-human,inonepersontheologicalaccuracy.Sothisoneisextremelyimportantbecauseitislivingrepresenta)onofthemysteryofChris)anityanditsrevela)on.

Andtheques)onis:Whydidthatsuddenlyappearin550withsuchincredibletheologicalpurportanddetail?Well,somethinghappenedsixyearsbeforethat.In544,aclothbearinganimageofJesuswas“discovered”inaprotectedpor)onofthegateabovetheEdessacitywalls,anditcametobeknowninthelargerRomanEmpire.Apparently,thisclothwaskepthiddensowellinEdessathatitwasrarelybroughtout,butatthispointitbecameknown.Now,Jus)nian—hisreignwasthere—soasitmadeitsway,thismusthavebeenthemostsignificantrelicinalloftheByzan)neEmpire,andsurelyitwouldhavehadaninfluenceinhowthefaceofChristwasrepresented.Sowithinsixyearsthatimageappears,andwhenyouplayaroundwithhow—thisisthenega)veimage,ofcourse;theywouldn’thavehadthat,but,s)ll,youseepropor)onally,somebodydidapre[yamazingjoboflookingatwhatthatfacelookedlike.Anda`erthat,all

InHagiaSophiayouseeit’snotasstrongasintheSinai,butyoucanseethere,andthat’salsosixthcentury.Iputthatinforfolkswhohaven’tbeenintroducedtoOrthodoxy.Iliketotellthemthatthiswastheworld’slargestcathedralun)l1520,andwhentheywereserving,therewere60priests,140deacons(and40werewomen),90subdeacons,110readers,andittook10,000workerstobuildit,andittookfiveyears,andtheceilingwasoverlaidwithpuregoldthatreflectedonthemantleoftheiconostasis,whichwasalso…itmusthavebeenatrulymagnificentstructure.Thedomeis100feetindiameter,182feethigh,sirngonarchesthatwereanarchitecturalmarvelthatwasjustdiscovered.Insteadofusingbu[ressing,thiswasthefirst)methattriangleswereusedinbetweenthearchestochanneltheweightdownthroughthecolumns.AndthenaveofHagiaSophiaisthree)meslargerthananyGothiccathedralintheworld.It’saboutthelengthofanen)refootballfield.

Wearefacedwiththeques)onthatChristhadtofacewithus,whichis:WillIforgivethemwhenitwasn’tmyfaultatall?Itwastotallyunjust,wrong.Christsays:Thisispartofpassion-bearing,andifitweretobechangedandIweretostopit,Iwouldmaketheworldinchains.SowhatI’mofferingyouissomethingthatisindeedtraumaCc,butthereissomething:there’slifeaZerthetrauma.There’slifeaZerthebetrayal,anditissomethingthatissogreatthatthisisnothingcomparedtowhatyou’llreceive.Awomanhastravailedinbirth;that’snothingcomparedtothelifeshegives.

Andeverythoughtwehaveandeverychoicewemakeisthepain)ngwe’remaking,isthebookwe’rewri)ngofourlife.Wearethebook,andGodwillopenthebookatthelastmomentofourlife,andouren)relife,everyword,everythought,everythingisthere.Wecan’thidefromanything.It’sallthere.Godwillreaditwithlove,anditwillbreakourheart—anythingthatwehavetobringbeforehim.Butwhathereadswillbethingswehaven’tevengoteyestoseeyet.

Soallthepainofthislifewillbegoneinaflash,andthentherewillbeaneternalliturgy,callandresponse,whereinsteadofAdamandEveandman:“Whereareyou?”itwillbe:“HereIam.”TheIamwhoamwillcall,andwewillringwiththereflec)onofhimwhenwesay,“HereIam.”AndthekenosisofChristwiththeperichoresisoftheTrinitywillemptyoutintous:“Iamyours.Dowithmewhateveryouwant,”andwewillanswerback,“Iamyours.Dowithmewhateveryouwant.”Andwewilldiscoverwhatmarriageis.MarriageistheholyTrinity,andmarriageisthekeno)cself-offeringtotheOtherintheeternalliturgy.
