5th Grade Summer Reading The purpose of summer reading is to encourage students to enjoy quality literature and to continue to develop their independent reading skills. Studies show that students who read everyday, do better in school. Just like in sports, real skill building occurs when individuals practice regularly. Summer reading also poses an opportunity to develop a real love of reading in your child. By allowing them free choice amongst an array of rich literature, children will begin to understand what it means to get completely immersed in a wonderful story. This summer, students are asked to read 2 books from the provided book list. After reading each book, students must write a book summary. The book summary must be signed by a parent or guardian before it is submitted. Book Summary Criteria For each book summary, the student must write 2 paragraphs with at least 5 sentences each. The first paragraph should be a summary of the book; the second paragraph should reflect the student’s recommendation (with specific examples) to read or not to read the
