Alfred the Great (849-899) was the most famous Kings of England. He managed to defend his kingdom called Wessex, against the Vikings. He also introduced the use of coins and education in this country!

He thought education was really important and lots of important books that were written then and still are read now were translated by him from Latin (A language that we don't use anymore).

Known as a just and fair ruler, Alfred is the only English King to have been given the name ‘the Great‛.

1. Alfred was born in 849. He became king in 871 and died in 899.

2. He had four older brothers who were all king before he did.

3. In 870 Alfred and his brother Aethelred fought nine battles against the Vikings.

4. In 886 he won London and set about renovating the city.

5. Alfred believed that all free born English boys should receive an education and he set up a school at his court to educate his sons, as well as those of the nobles and others of lesser birth.

William was born in 1028 in the city of Falaise in France. His father was very powerful. His parents weren't married, which meant that William's birth was frowned upon. William invaded England and became the king of England after winning the battle of Hastings against the current king of England.

> Even when he was king of England he spent most of his time in Normandy.

> William's wife Matilda was only 4 feet 2 inches tall.

> To invade England William gathered men from Normandy, France, and even other countries in Europe. He promised them land in England for their service.

> He rode into battle riding a black stallion that had been given to him by the King of Spain.

> When William was crowned king the English nobles attending the ceremony shouted their approval. Unfortunately, William's soldiers outside the abbey thought it was an attack. They began to burn down the nearby buildings.
