He is quick with words of gratitude for the many who have inspired him, guided him, and supported him along the way. His parents are Patty and Brian Joosten. Patrick will earn a Bachelor of Science degree and then go on for training as a pilot. Congratulations, Patrick! Patrick Joosten, with Congressman Reid Ribble Photo by Brian Roebke, Times-Villager, used with permission March 8 was a thrilling day in Little Chute when 8th District Congressman Reid Ribble came to the High School to present senior Patrick Joosten with an appointment to the Air Force Academy in Colorado. The admissions process is exceptionally vigorous and a very talented pool of candidates are evaluated for academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, athletics and character. They also must also pass a fitness test and undergo a thorough medical examination. Furthermore, candidates must be nominated by their member of Congress from their home district and that in itself involves a formidable screening process. Congressman’s Ribble’s committee unanimously selected Patrick and Congressman Ribble noted that unanimous selections are very rare.

Perhaps you have seen some advertisements in
the Times-Villager and advertisements on
Facebook, such as the one at the right. Earlier
this winter, Little Chute Area School District
collaborated with the school districts of
Kimberly and Kaukauna in an innovative
communication campaign about the
important role of public education in our
community. We are fortunate to have great
public schools right here in the Heart of the
Valley. Thank you for sharing positive news
about public education in our community.
Caring for Others and Making a Difference……..
A very motivated group of seventh graders raised
$2,501.OO for the math-a-thon this year at LCMS.
The money will be sent to St. Jude’s Research
Hospital to help research cures for cancer and
other life threatening illnesses. These thirty-three
dedicated and caring individuals should be very
proud of their accomplishments. Seventh graders
involved are as follows:
Abby Bangart
Ryan Beinema
Tim Buchholz
Abbi Dorn
Chloe Dove
Keaton Duffeck
Isaiah Engle
Emily Franck
Aisaiah Glosson

Students at Little Chute Elementary School jumped all over heart disease and
stroke by participating in Jump Rope For Heart in their physical education
classes February 16th, 17th, and 18th. The students raised more than $5,515 for
the American Heart Association which funds research, programs, and
education to fight heart disease and stroke. The students all had a lot of fun,
and the kids enjoyed learning about the importance of physical activity and
how they can play a role in saving lives.
First graders from Mrs. Schlagenhaft’s and Mrs. Zwiers’ class enjoyed having Pooches to Pages come with
their dogs and listen to the children read to them. “It has been a wonderful program,” says Mrs.
Schlagenhaft, “the children love reading to the dogs, and the dogs get very excited to listen to the
children.” The pictures say it all!
Fourth graders at the Elementary School enjoy WIN time — otherwise known as “What I Need.” During this
time period, our students receive reinforcement or extension lessons in math concepts taught in the core
curriculum. Pictured below, their challenge was to use a given number of coins in order to make a grand
total of a $1.00. They needed to use their knowledge as it relates to the value of each coin, and their
addition skills as it relates to adding up decimals. The challenge also came into play when they had to
make dollar using a certain number of coins.

Exploring the Excitement of STEM!
What’s a ‘Scribble-bot’, you say? A Scribble Bot is a motorized contraption that moves in unusual ways! As it moves, it leaves a colorful mark. Fourth grade students had the opportunity to create their own in Mrs. Schulz’s art class in January. The students were asked to create the “body” of the robot using a wide variety of materials. The machine has 3-4 markers. They then added a motor and battery. Each Scribble Bot is unique, because everyone is investigating different methods for changing the variables: the placement of the motors and battery, methods of drawing, materials used for the base, the speed of the motors, etc. This project allowed the students to experiment, explore, invent and imagine. They were encouraged to use critical thinking skills combined with creative thinking skills.
Michigan Technological University’s Mind
Trekkers STEM Road Shows bring the WOW! of
science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics to the hands and minds of K-12
students under the inspirational guidance of the
Mind Trekkers team consisting of
undergraduate and graduate students.
A group of ninety 6th, 7th, and 8th graders
traveled to Northeast Wisconsin Technical
College in Green Bay on February 11 to explore
these exciting “hands-on” STEM exhibits by the
Mind Trekkers from Michigan Tech. Students
had fun exploring a surgery simulator, a
television green screen, making ice cream with
liquid nitrogen, running across Oobleck*, turning
bananas into musical instruments and many
other fascinating exhibits.
*Oobleck is a ‘non-Newtonian’ fluid. That is, it
acts like a liquid when being poured, but like a
solid when a force is acting on it. You can grab
it and then it will ooze out of your hands. Make
enough Oobleck and you can even walk on it
(or run)!
8th graders- MaKenna Maronek, Kaitlyn Lewicki

7th graders wearing color reduction glasses-

8th graders- Nathan Moreau, Brooke Jansen,
Alex Gillis, Jordan Meronek
6th grader
Matthew Janssen takes a spin
7th graders Max Baumann, Caden Hurst, Andrew Rode and Anders Rasmussen use a magnetic race track.
6th graders Brooke Hengel, Tagen Krebs, Kasey
Schwaller take a psychological test.
