Principal’s Comment

Matua Neitana Tane

He iwi kotahi tātou. We are one people.

In the recent holiday some members of our Kapa Haka along with students from Fernworth, as well as their teacher and alumni Steph Wilson welcomed the new Southland Area Commander Inspector Mike Bowman to Murihiku Marae. It was a heartfelt and warm occasion and many of the speakers including the Commander spoke particularly to our students with pride, emotion and admiration.

Put Sunday the 25th of August in your diary for the biennial Otago Southland Secondary Schools Kapa Haka Competition “Te Hautonga”. It will be held at the ILT Stadium. Gold coin entry. This will be followed by a week of cultural celebrations as the Polyfest hits the stage once again celebrating its 10 year anniversary.

From the Boardroom

One of the strategic goals for 2019 is to further improve the pastoral care or our students. (Every student ‘known and noticed’ by the same key staff member across several years.) Specifically, staff are currently reviewing whether to have the same Form Teacher for 5 years (Year 9-13). The Board and the Principal would welcome any parent views on this subject - simply email the school office:[email protected]

Thanks to all the staff, the many students, and the PTA (a great barbecue!) for their

presentation of the school and what it offers at Open Day last Sunday. Your energy and enthusiasm were infectious!

We are all proud of the quality of education at our school, and encourage you to get your enrolment for younger siblings handed in well within the final 31 August deadline.

Chris O’Connor BOT Chairperson

A combination of pen, paper and computer devices will be the norm in many, many occupations for a long time. Indeed, most of our personal interactions with agencies, banking and business are now conducted

online. And that’s now the norm for schools as well. Your children need to learn to use personal devices as a powerful tool for communicating, learning, creating and storing their own stuff - along with being able to write on paper!

The BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policy at Hargest was carefully considered and introduced in a sensible, staged manner (moving up a year level each year).

We ask that those of you able to provide a device, ensure that it is charged and brought to school every day - now an essential ‘managing self’ skill!

Our scheme for providing Chromebooks, free from the library, is struggling under the pressure of numbers of students who simply cannot be bothered bringing their device to

school, or have them charged and in working order (approx. 70 per day in this category). We need your support, please. We are educating kids for their future - not our past!

We have considered putting a charge on the daily issue of devices but want to avoid this strategy if possible. Internet connectivity hasn’t made teaching any easier but it has lifted the potential for its effectiveness hugely.

Please work with us, and support our efforts!

‘Solve It’ UnitJunior Campus

Room 4 had a wonderful turn out to support their ‘Solve it’ unit. They had to identify a real problem and design a prototype to solve the problem. Innovation was key. We had students building, sewing, painting, glueing and 3D printing. Problems ranged from carpal tunnel, wet bench seats to left handed hockey sticks

Year 7 & 8 HealthAnother year has flown by and Harold, along with Southland Life Education Trust, was back for another year. Life Education educates and empowers students to embrace positive choices for a healthy mind and body. Today children face a lot of challenges and the decisions we make as children can dramatically affect how we live our lives in the future – and this is why Life Education exists. Through Education we help students to understand how decisions they make today can affect their future health and well-being.

The annual LEO Ball Extravaganza was a night of lights, stars and extravagance, when the Year 13 girls (and boys)walked down the catwalk to show off their dresses and suits. All proceeds from raffles and ticket sales went towards a chosen charity. This year it was for Motor Neurone Disease Southland. Involved in this event, we had a multitude of students in several committees each doing their part, whether it was writing up dress descriptions for the girls, making and boxing food, selling sponsorships, selling raffles, the list goes on. The club also acknowledges and thanks all of the teachers who spent their free time helping out with this event. We raised $2,400 for Motor Neurone Disease Southland and we all had a great time organising it and a truly great night.

Kumagaya City HallWelcome

We are very pleased to welcome the 27th homestay tour from Kumagaya City Hall to James Hargest College. 20 students and two chaperones are here for 10 days to learn about our culture and lifestyle. During their time here they will have new experiences like a mihi whakatau, buddy lessons, special New Zealand lessons as well as meeting the mayor, sightseeing in Queenstown, experiencing farm life and visiting Bluff. However the most important time will be spent in a homestay family. We thoroughly appreciate the efforts of all the homestay families who have offered to host.

Hargest Lions on Tour

On the 6th of July, the James Hargest College first XV travelled to the Gold Coast, Australia to participate in the annual Gold Coast Rugby Carnival. The Gold Coast Rugby Carnival is a youth sporting event held on the Gold Coast each July.

The event is a week long Rugby Carnival focused on Spirit and Sportsmanship including a proud 27-year history with over 50 teams competing at the carnival each year. The goal of the Carnival is to attract both the traditional rugby schools and others who may have only recently discovered the wonders of our great game. All teams are welcome regardless of their playing ability.

The team, which consisted of 23 players and multiple parents and coaches were accommodated at the BreakFree Beachpoint hotel which was located next to the beach on the Gold Coast over the course of the week. During the week the JHC 1st XV played 6 games of rugby, these games took place every second day with the team playing two games per day.

During the non-rugby days the team participated in a variety of different activities which included; being able to shop at huge inner city malls and shopping centres and a day devoted

to theme parks where the team was collectively able to go to Dream World and White Water World. The Carnival experience also subsumed a beach day, where all the teams attending retired from playing sports and retreated to the beach for an array of convivial activities. The Gold Coast Carnival also retained a communal dinner for each team to attend which was held at the Australian Outback Spectacular.

The JHC 1st XV went to the carnival as a clear unidentified Southland team, with one goal on their minds, to win. After a rough start to the season back in New Zealand, the trip to Australia was a chance to clear the scoreboard and bring the competition to a new level facing off against teams from both New Zealand and Australia.

The 1st XV teams they played included Wairarapa, St Pius X, Cromwell College,

Carnival trip to Australia has brought these boys closer together to create a tight band of brothers, with friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.

I would just like to say a big thank you to the coaching staff of Stu Harvey and Mark Tinnock, bus driver Matty XO Pope and the parents who joined us for any of the trip. Your support and help was truly appreciated.

Finally a huge thank you to our manager and non-official team physio, Tanya Haywood, who always goes above and beyond to make sure we have supplies, information and everything we need to play and compete in the sport of rugby.

Gold Coast Cyclones, Te Awamutu and Aquinas, with James Hargest pulling off a victorious couple of wins in the process. Each rugby day was tough for the team as they were not used to the hot and humid conditions that Australia implemented, but thanks to the coaching staff, parents and especially to the manager Tanya Haywood the team was provided with three meals a day including snacks and supplies to help the team participate and compete at a high level each day.

Despite the James Hargest College 1st XV team being a relatively new and young team, the Gold Coast Rugby

School SafetyJunior Campus

Student supervision is not available prior to 8.20am so students must not be on the school grounds before then, unless they are attending before school maths. This is a safety issue as supervision is not available prior to 8.20am. We also do not have supervision available after school so unless your child has an afterschool activity within the school please ensure they are collected by 3.30.

Students are not to use the staff car park on Layard Street as a walkway area and parents are not to use this as a drive through to drop or pick up children, again this is for safety.

The Health Nurse is available at the Junior Campus in Term 3. If you have any concerns please phone the school office and we will arrange for the Health Nurse to contact you. If students wish to see the Health Nurse they are able to make an appointment by placing a request in the green post box in the office foyer.

When you phone in an absence, please give the reason so it can be recorded with the correct coding in the attendance system.

Please note that classes start at 8.50am and students are to be in class by that time. If students come in late, they are to go to the office before going to class to have their names deleted from the absence list.

Absences/Late to SchoolJunior Campus

Parent Parking Junior Campus

We strongly recommend that all students from year 7 - 12 are equipped with a personal device next year. Since introducing 1:1 device use with a pilot class 4 years ago, we have been ‘rolling up’ a 1:1 device learning environment year by year. During this time the school has transformed many of its other systems to digital platforms. Students in all year 7-11 classes this year now routinely use access to their school digital platform (Google for Education) for their normal work. Device use is about ‘which technology is best’ - device or paper and pen, and often this means using both at once. Next year we continue rolling up this process. It is important that we prepare students for their future, not our past!

Which Device? As a school, we are comfortable for students to bring their preferred device to school. We do not advocate one device over another. Students typically use a range of devices including iPads, Laptops,

chrome books and tablets. As a primary device we recommend the following minimum specifications:• Minimum screen size of 7 inches

(minimum usable resolution of 1024 x 600)
