Kia ora koutou te whanau Dear Parents and Caregivers, Welcome back to the 2012 school year. I hope you enjoyed a restful break with your families. It is great to see both the staff and children looking refreshed and settling in quickly to the school routines. An especially warm welcome to our many new families who have joined us this year; Maddy Armstrong (Rm 6), Hannah Arrandale-Wilson (Rm 12), Holly Arrandale-Wilson (Rm 13), Sarah-Kate Birkett (Rm 9), Joshua Book (Rm 14), Nicholas Book (Rm 19a), Loretta Bradley (Rm 3), Josiah Ching (Rm 19a), Gabriel Connor (Rm 5), Phoebe Connor (Rm 11), Angus Dawson (Rm 4), Charlotte Dawson (Rm 4), Robert De Kriek (Rm 12), Haylee Gardiner (Rm 15), Jackson Gosling (Rm 3), Ava Holmes (Rm 2), Emma Howley (Rm 14), Hayden Jones (Rm 19a), Isabelle Kerr (Rm 17), Eden McCrorie (Rm 3), Luca McCrorie (Rm 3), Dannielle McLaren (Rm 21), Luca McRae (Rm 19), Adrienne Nelson (Rm 21), Keharn Netto (Rm 20), William Papps (Rm 19a), Connor Redwood (Rm 17), Tarn Stephenson (Rm 20), Paige Stewart (Rm 2), Daniel Sturm (Rm 2), Khang Tang (Rm 22), Utanh Tang (Rm 24), Railey Tran (Rm 3), Michelle Walker (Rm 4), Tashana Mathews (Rm 12), Caitlin Cameron (Rm 22) and Cassidy Thomas-Bennett (Rm 15) – we have had 38 new students start with us at the beginning of the year. We welcome back teacher Cade Armstrong and his family and we also welcome new teacher, Mrs Megan Saxon in Room 8 along with Vikki Mark who will be working in the library part-time. We had a productive Teacher Development Day prior to school starting with a neurological researcher talking to us about brain development in children followed by a ‘hands on’ art lesson. The teachers’ art efforts are on display in the foyer. Over the holiday period there has been plenty of activity on site at Henley School with the completion of the Maitai Special Needs Satellite Class near Room 16. This facility is designed for special needs students in the Richmond/Waimea area and will allow them to be incorporated into the Waimea Campus and eventually transition through to the Waimea College Special Needs Unit. Previously many of these students had to taxi into Nelson for their education. We look forward to this addition to our campus. Along with the Special Needs class we now also have the One Day School for gifted children located on our campus operating out of Room 16. This was previously based at Appleby School and will operate on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during term time. You can find out more about the One Day School through their website at www.giftededucation.org.nz/ Our junior sandpit is being redeveloped at present and we are also working on tidying up the top court that has been affected by tree root damage. Part of this area will be dug up, resealed and court markings repainted. The hall is also due for some maintenance this year including an internal repaint and general tidy up. A reminder that our William St driveway is not to be used for picking up and dropping off your child/children and we appreciate your cooperation by parking in the new carpark at the William Street entrance and using the pedestrian access up the driveway to the school. This minimises the risks to the large number of children we have on site. Thank you to parents for sending your children correctly dressed in our compulsory school uniform. They look fantastic and we get many positive comments about them. As we are now in the swimming season it would be great if parents could ensure that items of clothing (including school hats) are clearly named. Finally, schools work best when communication lines are open and people feel comfortable to speak in a frank and honest way. If you do have any concerns regarding your child please make sure you discuss it with your child’s teacher, the deputy principals (Eric and Jan) or myself as soon as possible. Teachers are generally available in classrooms from 8.30am however it is often best to make an appointment if you have a concern best discussed without the child being present or when more time is required. All the best to our Senior Syndicate students who are staying at Bethany Park Camp in Kaiteriteri over the next couple of weeks. A big thanks to the teachers who have spent a lot of time organising this outdoor education experience for them and also to the parent volunteers who will be taking part. Finally, our school Swimming Sports are to be held at Nayland Pool on Friday 2 nd March. We look forward to seeing you there. Kind regards, John HENLEY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 56a William Street Richmond Nelson Ph (03) 544 8904 Email: [email protected]Website: www.henley.school.nz 16 February 2012 No: 1 Term 1 REACH HIGH - STRIVE FOR KNOWLEDGE - LIVE WITH ALL YOUR HEART
