FOTO: DELIAH BRINKHUIS Hande vat in gebed

Upgrade for local hospitalDALEEN FOUCHÉ

An upgrade for the HelderbergHospitalandanewclinic forNom-zamo are being planned to relievethe current pressures on provin-cialhealth facilities in theHelder-berg.

In a recent statement, WesternCape Health Minister, Theuns Bothaadmitted that health facilities in theWestern Cape are under “immensepressure”.

“There is always a tension be-tween the escalating demand forservices and the available resourc-es,” the statement reads.

Botha explains that the burden onhealth facilities is much larger than

what they were originally designedfor. He, however, emphasised thatthe challenge is not a shortage ofmedical equipment, but a shortage ofspecialist doctors and nurses.

In the province, the vacancy ratesfor doctors in the last financial yearwas 2,6% and 3,7% for nurses. “Thisis relatively low in comparison toother provinces.”

Currently, 8,1% of the 320 posts atHelderberg Hospital are vacant.

Strand, Rusthof and MacassarCommunity Health Centres, howev-er, have a 0% vacancy rate and is ful-ly staffed.

Angelique Jordaan, spokespersonfor the Western Cape Department ofHealth, says vacancies are filled assoon as possible and according to the

Department’s HR process and proto-cols.

In order to address the need at theHelderberg Hospital, the WesternCape Department of Health intendsimplementing “major” upgrades atthe facility. “It is expected that thecontractor will commence on site inthe second half of 2014.”

Jordaan says the upgrade will en-sure that the hospital has additionalspace, which will allow for more pa-tients to be accommodated, especial-ly emergency cases, mental healthpatients and newborns.

A new Community Health Centre(CHC) is planned for Asanda Villagein Nomzamo. The tender process forthe new Nomzamo CHC is closed andadjudication is in process.

organisation will be offering a spe-cial rate on their pet adoption fee.

Kids learn to make kitesIn an attempt to keep kids off thestreets and away from the evils with-in the community, about 55 childrenwere treated to their very own kite-making workshop.

It was held on Thursday 26 Septem-ber at the Strand South Library andpresented by Sheikh Nazeem Safodi-en, Imam of the Nurul Islamicmosque in Faure Street.

“We initiated this kite project be-cause we noticed that many childrenare bored during the school holidaysand when they have nothing to do is

when they link up with bad compa-ny,” explains Safodien.

He believes that it is up to theadults to instill positive values andskills within the children and to keepthem away from drugs.

“We also noticed that there is a lotof anger within our children, so hav-ing a certain skill will help them dealwith it by doing practical things.”

For more information, contact Sa-fodien on 083 372 8001.
