Avon, Ohio

CLEVELAND CLINIC AVON INPATIENT BED TOWER

This medical project delivered a new 225,000 SF inpatient bed tower to an existing family heath and ambulatory surgical center. The scope added 126 inpatient beds, 14 medical/surgical patient rooms, 12 intensive care beds, two new operating rooms, a pharmacy, a processing lab, dietary services, and an expansion of the emergency and imaging departments. The balance of the building included patient support services, general support services, diagnostic, and interventional programs.

Brunswick, Ohio

CLEVELAND CLINIC BRUNSWICK EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

The two-story 40,000 SF addition was seamlessly connected to the Cleveland Clinic Brunswick Family Health Center with minimal disruption of operations in the occupied building. The corner connection created a convenient public drop off and parking area for the new emergency department. The first story is approximately 22,500 GSF and includes an appropriately-sized processing lab and an imaging department. The design employs the use of a four-bed ‘split flow’ for non-emergent patients, and 12 exam rooms configured around a central core that serves as a multidisciplinary work station for ED staff.

Twinsburg, Ohio

CLEVELAND CLINIC TWINSBURG FAMILY HEALTH AND SURGERY CENTER

Developed on an environmentally sensitive, 80-acre suburban site adjacent to Interstate 480, the siting of this first phase 190,000 SF building was informed by the topography and governed by the limits of disturbance to wetlands and natural rock outcroppings established by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. At site entry, a landscaped roadway carved into a hill descends to a meadow which is flanked the main entrance and emergency entrance to the LEED Gold facility. The five-story Family Health Center is classified as a business occupancy and contains medical clinics, a rehab gym, pharmacy, offices, a community room, and café.

Omaha, Neb.

MADONNA REHABILITATION HOSPITAL

This 240,000-SF, 110-bed facility includes six, 16-bed nursing units and a separate, secured 14-bed pediatric wing. The two-story design works well on the long sloping site, and places acute rehabilitation facilities on the same level as therapy spaces for easy access and maximum therapy time. Supporting Madonna’s goal to provide personalized care, patient units are scaled into eight-bed neighborhoods with dining and activity areas. All patient rooms are designed to support family interaction in patient care.

Mayfield Heights, Ohio

CLEVELAND CLINIC HILLCREST HOSPITAL

This highly complex project entailed interfaces between new and existing structures. The scope included multi-phased expansion/renovations of the Emergency and Surgery Departments to deliver 229,000 SF of new construction and 70,000 SF of renovation on a landlocked hospital campus. The design team worked with the city to rewrite the zoning code to allow contiguous development and full project scope included 72 medical/surgical patient rooms, 33 Neonatal Intensive Care beds, central sterile rooms, emergency department, materials management, and engineering central plant improvements.

COPPER QUEEN COMMUNITY HOSPITAL

The project totals 12,000 SF of renovated and new spaces, including an expansion of 8,000 SF containing a new nine-exam room emergency department, ambulance entrance, helistop, new CT Scan room, as well as outpatient testing and conference space. The renovated area totals 4,000 SF and includes a new clinical laboratory, inpatient pharmacy, emergency department lobby/waiting room, plus an expanded main hospital lobby and waiting areas.

SUMMIT TRI-STAR DIGESTIVE WELLNESS CENTER

The 11,700 SF free-standing medical office is located on a five-acre site in a neighborhood undergoing a transition from residential to commercial. The Outpatient Endoscopy Center includes two procedure rooms, and nine pre- and post- procedure patient holding bays along with related support areas including scope processing, and a nurses’ station. A discharge vestibule is conveniently located adjacent to the main entry. Employee and physician amenities include administrative functions, a staff lounge, and physician work areas.

CLEVELAND CLINIC SHEIKH KHALIFA MEDICAL CITY MASTER PLAN

The primary deliverable of this project was a comprehensive assessment of 51 buildings totaling more than 2 million SF. Assessment included architectural, medical, mechanical, electrical, structural and all other systems on a 100-acre main campus site, and ancillary assessments of facilities throughout Abu Dhabi. DLR Group provided master planning, facility assessment, medical programming and planning, architecture, mechanical and electrical engineering, and interior design.

One of the most pressing challenges in the century is to mitigate climate change caused by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from human activities. Information in this report has been extracted from the estimated operational energy consumption, energy production, and energy optimization of DLR Group designs in 2018. Beyond these typical metrics of achievement, in 2018 we addressed other areas including exploration of innovative materials, indoor air quality, occupant comfort, wellbeing and productivity. These areas further expanded our thinking on sustainability and the role it plays within integrated design.

Raise the Bar DLR Group’s average reduction target of predicted energy use for our high-performance designs has consistently exceeded the national peer group average. In 2018, our integrated designs resulted in a 49 percent energy reduction for all DLR Group 2030 Challenge tracked projects.* While an improvement over the previous year, we are continuing to set aggressive internal targets and widen our performance design approach to reach our goal of meeting the 2030 Challenge on every new project by 2020.
