WHAT is an EXTERNSHIP?

EXTENSION OF THE CLASSROOM IN A REAL-WORLD SETTING:

Assist/support the site with their daily operations.

Apply and practice current knowledge & skills

Learn new information & skills Develop soft skills & increase

level of professionalism

NETWORKING OPPORTUNITY: Establish business

relationships which can help you with job leads in the future.

GUIDELINES

YOUR WORK SCHEDULE IS SET BY YOUR SITE MANAGER & YOU.

ONCE SCHEDULE IS SET, STICK WITH IT!

Complete 180 hours of extern with a grade of “C” or better.

Work a minimum of 25 hours/week. May not work more than 10 hrs/day

or 40 40 hrs/week. Must take 30 minute break if working more

than 4 ½ hours. Any time over 30 mins. for lunch, will be

deducted from your daily total of hours worked.)

EXAMPLE: 45 min break (15 mins deducted.)

PROFESSIONALISM

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Show initiative by asking, “What else can I do?” Avoid playing in “office gossip” or “office politics” Never discuss your patient’s health—with anyone! Arrive on time Make sure patients and site come first Be positive and respectful

Remember: You are there to learn; it’s your chance to become a health professional.

APPEARANCE

Appearance plays an important role in first

impressions.

Proper hygiene. Clean, wrinkle-free uniform

appropriate to the site. Clean, white shoes. Minimal jewelry. No body piercings. Cover tattoos. Long hair pulled back. ID badge, watch,

stethoscope. No long nails, fake nails,

overlays or bright polish. No perfumes/colognes.

COMMUNICATION

“Communication plays a critical role in every aspect of business, from the initial interview process to forming and maintaining relationships with clients and colleagues.”

Do not use slang. No cursing. Use proper medical

terminology. Make good eye contact so

people know you are listening. Constantly be aware of your

nonverbal communication skills.

Slow your rate of speech – speak clearly.

Ask for clarification when needed.

No gossiping.

Personal cell phone use is not allowed, except on breaks.

No personal use of the site’s computer (even on a break!)

Arrive 10 mins. early to start to work, return from breaks on time & stay the entire shift.

Call site & Clinical Coordinator if you will be absent or late.

Follow the proper chain of command. Willingly accept constructive criticism and use it to

improve. Be polite & respectful to all staff and clients. Communicate with your mentor/site

supervisor/coworkers and physicians. Ask if you do not know the answer!!!

REMINDER: Extern packet contents are the student’s responsibility. Forms MUST be completed and submitted to the clinical coordinator in a timely manner.

ALL special drug screens, background checks & interviews should be completed by now.

WEEKLY TIMESHEET Sanford-Brown General Instructions

INTEGRATED / EXTERNSHIP TIMESHEET 1. For Shifts greater then 4-1/2 hrs, you must take a minimum 30 minute meal break. A maximum of 30 minutes break time can be counted towards the total clinical hours for the day. Credit will not be given for more than 10 hours per day or 40 hours per week.

2. For each day of attendance, please include a brief description of duties performed.

Program: CVT DMS DA ST 3. Timesheet/eval must be signed and dated by both the student and clinical site supervisor.

MA MBC Pharm MLT 4. Fax Timesheet/Eval form each Friday to (618) 344-5853 before 5pm or send a copy with the student to campus.
