Our Higher Education programmes have been designedin consultation with universities and employers to producegraduates with the subject knowledge and higher levelskills valued in the workplace. We offer Higher National Certificates and Diplomas, Foundation Degrees and an Honours Degree in SocialWork. We work in partnership with Liverpool John MooresUniversity, Edge Hill University and Manchester MetropolitanUniversity, and our higher national qualifications areawarded by Edexcel.

Why choose to study higher education atLiverpool Community College?Our programmes have been designed in consultation with universities andemployers to produce graduates with the subject knowledge and higher levelskills valued in the workplace. We offer Higher National Certificates and Diplomas,Foundation Degrees and an Honours Degree in Social Work (see course list).You can also be sure of the following:

The college has formal partnership agreements with four higher educationinstitutions: Edge Hill University (EHU), Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU),Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), and De Montfort University (DMU).Altogether within the college, the universities validate twelve FoundationDegrees, a BA (Hons) Social Work and a suite of initial teacher educationprogrammes (Lifelong Learning Sector) at levels 4 and 5. Our higher nationalqualifications are awarded by Edexcel.

Many of our graduates carry on with their studies and in the case of FoundationDegrees, there are clearly mapped progression opportunities for those whowant to top up to honours degree.

International Foundation Pathways

For students who have completed high school and other studies but do not havethe subject qualifications they need for HE, our International Foundation Pathwaysprovide one year of study alongside British students to gain nationally recognisedqualifications. These courses are at Level 3 and include English language andacademic study skills support. All courses include IELTS preparation to improvescores and skill needed for HE.

Two year Foundation Pathways are also available including A-levels and ExtendedNational Diplomas – see website for further details: www.liv-coll.ac.uk

Information for international studentsLiverpool Community College welcomes international students. You may choose to study one of a range of Level 4 courses whichmeet Tier 4 visa regulations. These courses provide professionalqualifications for the work place as well as progression routes intohigher education (HE) further studies.

What qualifications do I need?

The qualifications of overseas students are assessed through the organisation calledUK NARIC which will confirm what your qualifications are equivalent to in the Britisheducation system. You will need subject specific qualifications for HE studiesotherwise you will have to take a Foundation Pathway to gain the subject knowledge.

Our full range of HE courses is listed on page 13 and this also gives you pagenumbers for more detailed course information.

You must check this carefully before you apply as not all courses meet the UK BorderAgency requirements for full time study. If we get applications from groups of studentswe may be able to make special arrangements for discrete HND programmes tomeet the UKBA hours of study requirements.

English language qualifications are set by the Border Agency and current Tier 4regulations state that you must have already achieved a B2 qualification in Englishlanguage and be ready to study at C1.

Examples of being ready to study at this level include the following:

• a minimum IELTS score of • Pearson Test of English score 5.5 or above of 53 or above

• Cambridge PET with Distinction • TOEFL score of 72 or above• Cambridge First Certificate • TOEIC score of 1095 or above.• International Baccalaureate

If you find it difficult to provide evidence it is a quick process to take an IELTS Test orthe on-line Pearson Test of English for results within 2 dayswww.pearsonpte.com/PTEACADEMIC/Pages/home.aspx.

How do I apply for a visa?

• Complete the college overseas studentapplication form

• Send the application form and allrequested evidence to the address onthe form

• You must include:

- Copy of your passport showing thenumber, photograph and expiry date

- Proof of your English level at B2 orabove (see UKBA list of approvedEnglish Language tests in yourapplication pack)

- Evidence of your qualificationsshowing that you meet the entryrequirements for the HE course

What if my English is not good enough?Liverpool Community College can offer full-time English Language study for anacademic year or for pre-sessional periods of study e.g. three or six months, in orderto prepare for HE level studies or to prepare for an International Foundation Pathway.All studies include academic English and study skills and preparation for anindependence IELTS test.

If you study English full-time you will have the opportunity to visit course tutors andapply for a course whilst in the UK to ensure you make the right choices.

You can also receive academic English support once you have started your coursefor up to six hours per week, and for as long as you need it.

(certificates and other documentsmust be transcribed into English)

- Proof of financial independence. Thisshould be a bank statement showingthat you have sufficient funds to coverthe tuition fees and UK living costs forthe full year

• When we have all your documents, we will send you an unconditional offerletter asking for your deposit and CAS fee.

YOU MUST STILL WAIT FOR YOUR UCASOFFER

• After we receive your deposit we willapply for your CAS number and sendyou your CAS statement.

When and how to apply for a HE courseat CollegeFull-time higher education courseYou'll need to apply through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service(UCAS) for full time programmes. You can apply using the online applicationsystem on the UCAS website www.ucas.ac.uk

Don't worry - you don't have to complete the form in one go. You'll get a usernameand password so you can take your time and get it right.

There is a fee for applying through UCAS. This is reduced if you only apply for onecourse. You can also find up to date application fees on the UCAS website.

Part-time higher education courseYou should apply directly to the college to study for a part time HE course. Apply online at: www.liv-coll.ac.uk or call course information on 0151 252 3000 formore details.

Higher level qualifications explainedHigher National Certificates (HNCs) and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs)If you want to gain a recognised higher level qualification and develop skills andknowledge to do a specific job, a HNC or HND could be for you. HNCs and HNDs areknown to focus on 'learning by doing' and can prepare you for a new career, or helpyou to progress in your current work.

HNCs and HNDs are provided by over 400 universities and further education colleges.HNCs can take one year to complete full time and two years part time. HNDs take twoyears full time and can also be taken part time (which takes longer).

Foundation DegreeA Foundation Degree is a Level 5 qualification that combines academic study andwork-based learning. It is specifically designed to give you the skills and knowledgeto progress to a full Bachelor’s degree. Students unsure of their skill levels can take aFoundation Degree before progressing to a full degree.

Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ)The Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ) has been designed by thehigher education sector, and describes all the main higher education qualifications.HNCs are at level 4 and HNDs and Foundation degrees are at level 5, while bachelorsdegrees are at level 6.

Learn while you earnHigher Vocational qualifications

Higher vocational qualifications cover a wide range of careers and come in fivedifferent qualification types. The college has an exceptional range of over 50individual higher education WBL qualifications.

These programmes allow the flexibility to work and study at the same time, givingstudents, employers and employees the option to efficiently develop and nurtureskills within the work place.

The qualifications involve several different course related elements/units involvinga combination of class room based learning and/or work place assessment.

The college provides industry standard facilities and outstanding tutors to ensureyou get the very best experience from your chosen programme.

Higher education WBL programmes vary in duration but will typically cover a 12 to24 month period.

Higher apprenticeships

Higher Apprenticeships provide a great route into higher education and enableHigher Apprentices to earn a salary whilst studying towards a higher educationcertificate or foundation degree. The apprenticeship frameworks are structuredtowards full time employment, with one day per week dedicated to study andlearning. The frameworks can vary in length but typically cover a period ofbetween 12 and 24 months.

The college has an exceptional range of over 20 Higher Apprenticeship Frameworks,providing career pathways in seven major occupational areas in high demandthroughout the region. We work with many employers in the private, public andvoluntary sectors and will help to identify apprenticeship opportunities to apply for.

You don’t need to get an offer of an Apprenticeship before you apply to study atLiverpool Community College.

Students enrolled on HE and FE programmes at Liverpool Community College areoffered many opportunities and support to develop their entrepreneurial skills.

Business start-up support, guidance and mentoring programmes and businessstart-up qualifications are run alongside regular entrepreneurial events in College.

Students have the opportunity to take part in entrepreneurial challenges whilstgaining experience working on business plans and researching new business ideas.

Entrepreneurial initiatives are offered as part of the College’s Student Entrepreneurshipprogramme, launched in September 2012. It is built on Liverpool CommunityCollege’s highly successful Enterprise Club which established a rich variety ofenrichment activities that have played an integral part of College curriculum overthe past few years.

The overall aim of the programme is todevelop knowledge, understanding andintellectual skills appropriate to a varietyof roles within the building engineeringservices sector. The programme will addressboth building services engineering designand commercial project managementpractices and as such it is suited to thoseengaged in the industry in either of thesecapacities. It is also well suited to people inother sectors of the built environment whoare required to interface with the buildingservices engineering sector i.e. facilitiesmanagement, etc.

The programme provides a stimulating andchallenging study that accurately reflectsthe activities of the building servicesengineering industry to enable studentsto pursue an effective, productive andresponsible career in the sector. There arethree different pathways through theprogramme to reflect the specialist roleof the individual; Mechanical BuildingServices, Electrical Building Services orCommercial Management.

The programme is validated by LiverpoolJohn Moores University and as suchstudents have full access to the facilitiesand resources of the University in additionto those of Liverpool Community College.

The programme is accredited by theChartered Institution of Building ServicesEngineering (CIBSE) and is recognised asmeeting the academic requirements in fullfor Licentiate and Associate membership ofthe Institution. In addition the Mechanicaland Electrical pathways through theprogramme are accredited as meetingin full the academic requirements forEngineering Technician (Eng Tech)registration and in part for IncorporatedEngineer (Ian) registration. The programmehas also been jointly "Endorsed" by SummitSkills (the Sector Skills Council for theindustry) and Foundation Degree Forward.

Building Services EngineeringFoundation Degree

The endorsement process is designed toconfirm that the course content matchesthe skills that employers require fromemployees working in their sector andmeets the requirements of the industriesfoundation degree frameworkspecification. At present this is the onlyfoundation degree in the sector with thisendorsement.

Future opportunities, career andprogression routesSubject to the availability of places withinthe university, successful completion of thisfoundation degree provides articulatedprogression to the final year of either:*BSc (Hons) Building Services Engineering(Project Management)*BENG (Hons) in Building ServicesEngineering.

Qualification(s)Foundation Degree (FdSc) in BuildingServices Engineering.

This is a level 5 qualification in the NationalQualifications Framework.

Entry requirementsStudents are expected to be employed inan appropriate capacity within theindustry. Those not in full time employmentin an appropriate environment must satisfythe WBL element of the programme viawork placement. The responsibility forobtaining work placement is the student'sbut the college will assist in obtaining asuitable work placement through itsexisting contacts with local employers.Candidates will normally need to have aBTEC national certificate or diploma in anappropriate area but non-standard entryonto the foundation degree programmemay be possible at the discretion of theProgramme Leader.

Duration and attendance There are three modes of attendanceavailable:

- Block release residential programme of35 hours per week for 13 weeks for 2years, requiring a residential component.

This mode is exclusive to companiesand their employees under specialcontract. Companies interested in this‘closed programme' should contactthe College for details.

- Day release programme of 10 hoursper week for 36 weeks for two years,followed by 6 hours per week for 36weeks in the third year.

- Day release for those with a HNC inBuilding Services Engineering willusually be 6 hours per week for 1 year.

Design Students will be introduced to a range ofdesign research methods from a variety ofsources (galleries, museums, books, websites, etc) as a starting point for inspiration and development of fashion related tasks.

Students will also be introduced to layplanning and grading, using CAD.

Manufacturing technology The module will have cumulative activitiesto introduce and build upon technical skillsrelated to manufacturing. Module AssessmentAssessment methods vary according to thenature of each module. There will be somewritten work required for all modules, whichcould be in the form of a report or essay, ora different form of written assignment suchas a presentation or musical composition orarrangement. The more practical modulesrequire you to keep some sort of log of youractivities, and there are periodic exams inmusic theory and solo performance. This is a three year, full time, modularprogramme that leads to the BA (Hons) in Social Work. This is the required qualificationfor professional social work practice withchildren and their families or adults andtheir carers.

The Foundation Degree is awarded byLiverpool John Moores University (LJMU).

• Carrying out valid legislation andinitiatives that impact on your role in theclassroom and engaging in a processof reflection and analysis to developyour professional practice.

Students will also identify their owndevelopment needs in relation to literacy,numeracy and ICT skills and consider howthey can develop these skills in theirstudents.

In the second year there are four furthermodules as follows:

• Continuing personal and professionaldevelopment

• Curriculum development for inclusivepractice

• Wider professional practice• Leadership and organisation.

During the programme you will plan anddeliver 150 hours of teaching, this will forma large part of the overall assessment.

Future opportunities, career andprogression routesThis programme provides the requiredqualification for all new entrants to the LLSwho carry out a full teaching role. Oncompletion of the programme studentsare eligible to apply for Qualified Status inthe Lifelong Learning Sector (QTLS). Students can go on to do a FoundationDegree/BA in Education or M.Ed.

Entry RequirementsYou should hold a minimum of a level 3qualification in the subject you wish toteach, but please note that in many casesyou would need a higher qualification,such as a degree, to teach certainsubjects. You also need to have level 2 in English and Numeracy.
