Paul Lewis’ complete set of the Beethoven sonatas enjoyed almost universal critical acclaim, including a ‘Record of the Year’ award from Gramophone magazine in 2008. Lewis now turns his attention to the fi ve piano concertos. Recorded between July 2009 and March 2010, these spot-on interpretations paint a portrait of Beethoven full of light and shade.

Steve Richman’s Gershwin By Grofé has received high praise from critics around the world. The album has spent four weeks on Gramophone’s Specialist Classical Chart, and over two weeks in the Top 20 on the Billboard Classical Chart.

Gershwin By Grofé rides high in the charts

2010 marks the fi fth anniversary of the Onyx label. Their wide-ranging stable of artists and rich catalog of critically-acclaimed recordings fi rmly place them in the top rank of classical labels. We congratulate Onyx on this important milestone and wish them many more years of stellar music-making. For the label’s fi ftieth release, Viktoria Mullova and Kristian Bezuidenhout have recorded Beethoven’s Violin Sonatas Nos. 3 & 9 (p.17). Their full-blooded, virtuosic performances shed new light on these chamber music staples. New music label Cantaloupe offers a unique collaboration by So Percussion and electronic duo Matmos. Treasure State (p.6) focuses on the musical resources of everyday and not-so-everyday materials. Hyperion superstar Angela Hewitt’s legion of fans will eagerly snap up her third volume of Beethoven Piano Sonatas (p.13), which includes the famous Moonlight Sonata. July features a bounty of Wergo releases, headlined by Friedrich Gauwerky and Mark Knoop playing John Cage’s fascinating Études Boreales (p.21). In non-classical releases, Piranha introduces US listeners to the retro funk of Slavic bad boy Magnifi co (p.22), while on World Village, Amira, ‘Bosnia’s Billie Holiday,’ joins forces with accordionist Merima Kljuco for Zumra, an album of haunting interpretations of traditional Bosnian songs (p.23). And on the jazz front, Plus Loin offers Live in Rennes (p.27), a live recording featuring master pianist Barry Harris.

Haydn not only wrote a large number of solo songs, he also produced a signifi cant number of small-scale cantatas. These remarkable works for solo voice and keyboard have the musical depth of dramatic concert settings in miniature. Written in either 1789 or 1790, Arianna a Naxos is especially powerful and almost symphonic in scope. In fact, Haydn intended to orchestrate the work, but for some reason, never took up the task. Mezzo Stephanie d’Oustrac and fortepianist Aline Zylberajch wield a rich palette of emotions and timbre, creating a recording that illuminates Haydn’s foreshadowing of romantic composers, Schubert in particular.

The oratorio Judas Maccabaeus was written in 1746, five years after Messiah, and was fi rst performed in London at Covent Garden the following year. It quickly became one of Handel’s most popular oratorios. It was written

to commemorate the victory of William, Duke of Cumberland over Charles Edward Stuart the Pretender at the battle of Culloden on 16th April, 1746. With its warlike story of the triumph of a Jewish hero over invading forces, Judas Maccabaeus formed the ideal victory celebration. Leonardo Garcia Alarcon invests the music with rich emotions and a wholly Italianate baroque vocality.

Little needs to be said about these audiophile classics, reissued again after a long absence from our catalog. However, although they are known for their demonstration quality sonics, all three discs feature solid performances of staples from the orchestral repertoire. Donald Johanos conducts the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in American music favorites and Rachmaninov’s powerful Symphonic Dances, and Stanislaw Skrowaczewski leads the Minnesota Orchestra in orchestral works and arrangements by Ravel. All three are Vox originals from 1967 and 1974.

Grigory Ginzburg (1904-1961) was perhaps the most astounding virtuoso to emerge in Soviet Russia and it is a tragedy that he was never allowed to travel to the west after the mid 1930’s. He focused his repertoire very much on the 19th century Romantic period and, above all, in Liszt, and his prolifi c recordings include many of Liszt’s virtuosic opera paraphrases that had fallen into neglect. This CD is the second of two devoted to his earliest 78rpm recordings mainly dating from around 1950. These discs are extremely rare and many of the performances included will be unknown to even the most ardent collectors. Of particular interest to pianophiles will be his supremely elegant Strauss transcriptions and the Schumann arrangements of Paganini’s Caprices.

Treasure State is a startling collaboration between two rogue American groups. So Percussion are renowned virtuoso performers of classical and avant-garde music

for percussion. Baltimorean electronic duo Matmos are infamous for turning bizarre sound sources (from plastic surgery to live snails) into shuffling rhythmic pop. They are Musique-concrete oddballs, brought into the mainstream by their collaboration with Bjork. Bridging the gap from the conservatory to the laptop screen, Treasure State features a selection of So Percussion & Matmos compositions in which the ensembles reinforce each other’s techniques and methodologies. The core of the record is series of studies based on everyday materials that are not generally used as musical instruments: ceramic planters, pails of water, aluminum cans and cactus needles. The result is a richly diverse yet highly listenable record that fl ows across a range of genres, sound sources, objects and styles to create an elemental American landscape.

This month’s titles complete the debut retail release of the Classic Records catalog. Most of the sets offered feature a standard CD packaged with a special dual-sided DAD 24/96 - HDAD 24/192 combo disc. The original masters used come from legendary Vox, Everest and Laurel recordings from decades past. However, the sound of these discs rivals the best that modern technology can offer. The Shostakovich and Rimsky-Korsakov sets are Vox originals, featuring stellar performances from the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra led by Pavel Kogan. The Berlioz was originally recorded on 35mm magnetic fi lm by Everest, and features Sir Eugene Goossens conducting the London Symphony Orchestra.

Standard CD + Dual disc - DAD 24/96 & HDAD 24/192Classic Records’ reissues of Bert Whyte’s 35mm Everest recordings remind the listener of how revolutionary this recording technique was at the time. Their dynamic range was unsurpassed, and the recorded sound possessed a depth that had never been produced before using traditional methods. These four discs, featuring such gems as Leopold Stokowski’s Wagner and Sir Eugene Goossens conducting Villa-Lobos and Ginastera, benefi t greatly from Everest’s technical prowess, and as a result, have remained on wish lists for decades. Eugene Asti’s pioneering Mendelssohn song series, which contains a wealth of fi rst recordings and rarities, concludes with this specially-priced two CD set. The content ranges from Mendelssohn’s first extant composition of any kind — a birthday song presented to his father by the precocious ten-year-old composer — to settings of the German romantic poets Schiller, Goethe and Eichendorff which place Mendelssohn fi rmly in the canon of the great Lieder composers. These works are performed by a talented group of young singers who will be familiar from other discs in the series, including the winner of the 2008 Kathleen Ferrier prize, Katherine Broderick.

Angela Hewitt is rapidly establishing herself as one of the great pianists of our age. Her concert career is expanding as rapidly as her discography, so it seems only right that, following her success in tackling one of the pillars of classical music in Bach, she should tackle another in Beethoven. Hewitt’s legion of fans will be delighted at this eagerly awaited third volume of Beethoven sonatas. Her fi rst two releases in this series were praised for their ‘clarity, intelligence and elegance’ and all these trademark qualities of her playing are fully present in this third disc. Four contrasting sonatas are presented here, including the famous Moonlight Sonata, which needs no introduction.

These three discs present mid-priced reissues of evergreens from the Hyperion catalog. Peter Holman’s Boyce offers over two hours of varied and inspiring listening. Mats Lidström’s performances of wonderful, lesser-known chamber works by Saint-Saëns prove that there is great deal of music waiting to be discovered beyond Carnival of the Animals. This collection from the Choir of St. Paul’s Cathedral was made to mark the tercentenary of the formal opening in 1697 of St. Paul’s, rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of London.

In his setting of Orlando, Handel offers us a score of remarkable dramatic power, diversity and originality. Orlando’s mad scene and slumber aria are among the composer’s most striking creations. Everything in the opera arouses admiration — the extremely varied scoring, the exuberant vocal writing, the rhythmic invention and the supple melodies. On this new recording from K617, Jean-Claude Malgoire and La Grande Écurie et la Chambre du Roy are joined by a cast of talented soloists in a fantastic production rivaling the best in the catalog.

This fascinating disc from the Trio Chausson features some of the very few pieces Chopin ever wrote for an instrument other than the piano. The Introduction et Polonaise brillante for cello and piano was written in 1829, when Chopin was only 19 years old. The trio, whilst not considered Chopin’s greatest work, has fi rmly established itself in the piano trio repertoire. Liszt is not a composer known for his chamber music. Tristia is an arrangement for piano trio by Edward Lassen of the sixth of the piano collection the Années de pèlerinage. Liszt apparently revised Lassen’s arrangement more than once, adding some more of his own material.

Her budding career sadly interrupted by China’s Cultural Revolution, pianist Zhu Xiao Mei fi nally began to receive the international recognition she deserved in the late 1980s. A resident of Paris and instructor at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, Zhu Xiao-Mei has enjoyed great success as a performer in Europe, Asia, South America and Australia. Her autobiography “La Rivière et son secret” was published by Editions Robert Laffont in October 2007 and received the Grand Prix des Muses in March 2008. Bach has long been one of her specialties, and this set demonstrates her strong affi nity for the composer.

Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, a gifted harpsichordist, was also a great composer whose sonatas were much admired. Her successful blend of Italian fi re and French elegance, which allows the violin to shine in brilliant passages while giving fi ne solos to the viol, places these pieces among the fi nest French instrumental music of the early 18th century. The chamber ensemble La Rêveuse specializes in works of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. By favoring eloquence, the mastery of the color and the richness of continuo, the musicians of La Rêveuse convey the rhetorical, spiritual and poetic force of this glorious repertoire.

Following on the critical success of her brilliant recording of Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas, this new CD of Beethoven sonatas sees Viktoria Mullova partnered with rising-star fortepianist Kristian Bezuidenhout. For this disc, Mullova plays with her usual grace and fi re on gut strings and using on a classical period bow, but is never a slave to musicological correctness. Bezuidenhout demonstrates his staggering virtuosity on the 1822 Walter fortepiano chosen for this recording. Both of these fantastic performers bring out every nuance of Beethoven’s sonatas, making the listener forget any controversy over the instruments they play. This recording, the fi ftieth release from Onyx, marks the fi fth anniversary of this enterprising young label.

This disc, featuring some of Opera Rara’s fi nest singers, is dedicated to Sir Peter Moores and the Peter Moores Foundation in recognition of their invaluable support over the years. Since its foundation four decades ago, Opera Rara has enriched the lives of generations of opera lovers and has altered perceptions through its dedication to exploring and reviving rare works from the Italian bel canto period and from the middle decades of the 19th-century French tradition. By far the majority of Opera Rara recordings have been world premiere recordings. In many cases, the work itself will have been rediscovered by Opera Rara after decades (and, in some cases, more than a century) of total neglect. Reviving such works requires patient and expert musicological endeavor to ensure that all sources are collated and compared, so that the best possible edition can be assembled, rehearsed and recorded. This compilation features excerpts from the works of the most signifi cant composers who are at the heart of Opera Rara’s output and are taken from the fi rst Opera Rara recording by each composer and from the most recent. Opera Rara has tried to shine the spotlight on as many as possible of the greatest stars who have recorded for them over the years. This is a fascinating and delightful survey of the richness that is Opera Rara.

Strauss’s tone-poem Eine Alpensinfonie of 1915 forgoes the conventions of the symphony form and consists of twenty-two continuous sections. It depicts the experiences of eleven hours spent climbing an Alpine mountain. The work is one of Strauss’s largest non-operatic compositions in terms of performing forces: the score calls for about 125 players in total. This disc features a live performance with Kurt Masur leading the Orchestre National de France.

The Seasons (Gadalaiki) is not program music in the classical sense, but rather an expression of feelings. Vasks says, “When I fi rst heard Vestard Shimkus playing I instantly understood - he is just the right interpreter. The notes turned into colors, scents, started to breathe, and The Seasons came into being.” Shimkus’ performance received the Great Latvian Music Award, the highest national distinction in the fi eld of music.

Henze’s compositional output is dominated by the larger genres with their richly differentiated palette of instrumental colors. Played by the Ensemble Recherche, this new disc features unpublished chamber music, with most works receiving their first recordings. The compositions are primarily occasional pieces, dedicated to close friends and colleagues, spanning a period of approximately two decades.

This new collection from MusikFabrik focuses on three composers’ imaginings of music from heaven or hell. In the Old Testament, the musical praise of God was imagined as an overpowering roar, a concept depicted in Martin Smolka’s Rush (Hour in Celestial Streets). Mauricio Kagel’s Orchestrion-Straat celebrates a joyous earthly resurrection while Louis Andriessen’s Racconto dall’Inferno (tale from hell) proposes that hell has a soundtrack, and anyone caught in its repetitive loops will fi nd it diffi cult to escape.

The enormous technical challenges presented by Cage’s Etudes Boreales demand careful coordination of fingers, instrument and intellect. On this CD the work is presented twice, in versions for piano solo and for cello and piano. As in its sister works, Etudes Australes and Freeman Etudes, Cage based his composition on a star chart, in this case, one of the northern sky created by Czech astronomer Antonín Becvár in 1962. Apartment House 1776 for four singers and any number of instrumentalists was written for the American bicentennial. It consists of 14 Tunes, 4 Marches, 2 Imitations and 44 Harmonies. On this disc, Friedrich Gauwerky plays his own arrangements for cello and piano of four of the Harmonies.

World Village • 450012

Bosnian café blues

File In: World / BosniaAlthough the songs on Zumra are beautiful examples of Bosnia’s complex folkloric culture, Amira and Merima Kljuco’s interpretations are far from standard. The title of the CD translates as ‘emerald,’ but the term can also be used to denote something that deviates from the norm. The music here is simultaneously original and contemporary. Both in their arrangements as well their interpretation, Amira and Kljuco look at these traditional songs in a new light, and in so doing, ‘rediscover’ them and present them to us as the true gems they are.

WORLD

“ Angelic, simply angelic… these are transcendental songs of love, loss and yearning from the region’s sevdah tradition, all performed with restraint and subtlety.”

— THE SUNDAY TIMES

ADVANCE REVIEWS“ Suicidal melancholy has rarely sounded as pretty as on this collaboration between Amira, doyenne of Bosnian café blues, and classical accordion virtuoso Kljuco. From blue-note trillings to quasi-industrial buzzing, Kljuco wrings extraordinary sounds from her instrument and the sheer Dostoevskian relentlessness leaves you weirdly elated.”

— DAILY TELEGRAPH

“ With Rosa, Amira’s journey was already very interesting. With Zumra, it is beyond ‘interesting’. And that is a very, very good thing. Zumra is in the ballpark for one of this year’s best.”

File In: World / MadagascarMadagascan music legend Andriamalalaharijaona Samoela (a.k.a. Sammy) formed Tarika Sammy (Sammy’s Band) band in the early 80s, and over the next twenty years the group became one of the island’s most successful musical exports. Enticed back in to the studio by the German label Network, Sammy founded a new band for these recordings - Samy Izy - to pay homage to Madagascar’s roots music. Sammy also invited top-ranking guests artists including fl autist Rageroge, the Tana Gospel Choir and, reviving an almost forgotten tradition, the nine-piece wind orchestra Ambodirana Centre. Tsara Madagasikara is another major contribution to the music of Madagascar.

File In: World / ChileThe Payadores are folk poets who improvise their lines accompanied by the guitarrón chileno, a member of the guitar family with 25 playable and sympathetic strings. The performers on this disc, Manuel Sanchez, Moises Chaparro and Guillermo Villalobos are considered among the most famous exponents of the Payadores style in Chile. The disc was recorded live in Langon, France during The Nuits Atypiques Festival in July 2008. It captures perfectly these unique artists’ fascinating, improvised “poetry battles” and their tight connection with the audience.

Large format packaging 7.5” x 5.5”File In: World / MayotteFor centuries, the interaction between Greek, Turkish and many ethnic groups gave rise, in the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the great cities of Asia Minor, to a musical culture which could be qualified as a perfect example of intercultural integration. The Oriental style called smyrnaika, played on violin, oud, qanun and santoor had a strong influence on rebetiko, today acknowledged as Greece’s national music. This recording by the Greek group En Chordais illustrates to perfection this musical tradition of Asia Minor. “Debaa” is a term used for the singing of mystical poetry within Sufism, more specifically it grew from the singing of the poems and narratives of Abdurahman al-Dayba, a Yemeni writer from the 15th century. Debaa has evolved on the island of Mayotte, part of the Comoros chain in the Indian Ocean, into a female choral practice, accompanied by drums, bells and tambourines and choreographed with dance movements. Several debaa groups (known as Madarassati) perform on Mayotte, and internationally (including WOMAD 2008). This album presents fi ve Madarassati, which commonly have between 50-80 members each.

File In: JazzInspired by jazz greats Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk and Charlie Parker, Barry Harris began studying piano at the age of four. A Detroit native, Harris worked frequently with the likes of Miles Davis, Sonny Stitt and Max Roach. By the late 1950s, his reputation as a performer and teacher of bebop style had visiting artists from around the world seeking him out for his musical insights and prodigious skills at the keyboard. In 1960, Harris joined Cannonball Adderley’s quintet and soon afterward moved to New York, where he performed and recorded with such musicians as Dexter Gordon, Yusef Lateef and Hank Mobley. Recorded in November 2009 during the Jazz à l’Ouest festival in Rennes, France, this new live album features Harris - accompanied on this occasion by Mathias Allamane (acoustic bass) and Philippe Soirat (drums) - in a grand and beautiful lesson in the world of 20th century classical music, i.e., jazz. The CD is packaged with a complete Plus Loin label catalog.

This a must-have release for big band afi cionados and popular music-lovers alike.
