Fortepianist Kristian Bezuidenhout continues his multi-disc survey of Mozarts music for solo keyboard. Volume 2 features an instrument by Paul McNulty, modelled on a Viennese original by Anton Walter & Sohn (c.1802).

Bezuidenhout is a prince of the fortepiano, making it sing in melodic phrases as no other practitioner of this intractable instrument has done in my experience. THE TIMES (UK)

    Street Date: December 14, 2010

To close out 2010, Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra return to Shostakovich. This time, they tackle the revolution-inspired second and eleventh symphonies (p.7). The previous release in their cycle was nominated for two GRAMMY awards. Also of note are a lovely Christmas CD from the Gloriae Dei Cantores choir (p.5), an album of Baroque music for countertenors on Mirare (p.8) and the reissue of the Kings Consorts complete Purcell Odes on Hyperion (p.6.). On the non-classical side, the months key title is the World Village release of Guia by fado singer Antonio Zambujo (p.13). Zambujos interpretation of fado has a decidedly contemporary twist. Also, Lusafrica reissues the lovely Nha Sentimento by Cesaria Evora (p.15) featuring Egyptian collaborator Fathy Salama and Cape Verdeans Manuel de Novas and Teofi lo Chantre. The CD includes a bonus duet track with Lura entitled Moda B.

  • The genesis of Concerto Soave is closely bound up with the music of 17th-century Italian composers. The ensemble was the fi rst, some 15 years ago, to devote a recording to the Sacri Musicali Affetti of Barbara Strozzi. However, the great Venetian woman composer is not the only one who deserves the honor of recording. Most of the female composers on Il Canto delle Dame came from the ranks of the aristocracy; some consecrated themselves to God. In both cases, they found the wherewithal not only to compose and to achieve recognition from their peers, but also to publish their output. Maria Cristina Kiehr has established a reputation with press and public alike as one of the leading interpreters of baroque vocal music. She is capable of combining the smoothness of her unique timbre with fervent respect for the poetic texts she champions with humility and warmth.

Lhomme arme is a Renaissance melody that provides the underpinning for many vocal works. Thought to be inspired by the crusades, a rough translation of its text is, Fear the armed man; word has gone out that everyone should arm himself with chainmail coat of iron. It is not clear exactly when Josquin wrote his masses, but both the Missa LHomme arm super voces musicales and the Missa sexti toni were written for the Popes chapel and were printed by the Venetian printer Petrucci in 1502. Maurice Bourbon and the vocal ensemble Mtamorphoses plan to record the complete masses of Josquin Desprez.

REMINDER ONLY Originally Released in December 1992Strictly speaking this is not a new release, but as the original issue of this important and unique set

has been out of stock for almost two years, a reminder is justifi ed. The need to create new artwork caused a hiatus in repressing, but it also gave Hyperion the opportunity to re-think the packaging. The set is now contained within a slim, clamshell-style box with cardboard inner sleeves (rather than the original, large box containing eight standard jewel cases with individual booklets for each disc). There is now one substantial and fully updated 72-page booklet, which contains all the texts and a trilingual note. This is the only complete recording of Purcells Odes and Welcome Songs and, as such, one of the treasures of the Hyperion catalogue - it makes a very welcome return.

  • SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe debut release in Valery Gergievs Shostakovich symphony c yc l e w i th t h e Mar i in sky Orchestra was nominated for two GRAMMY awards. The latest chapter in the series features the second and eleventh symphonies, which were both inspired by Russian revolutions. The eleventh, subtitled The Year 1905, marks the bloody revolution of that year. It is an astonishingly atmospheric symphony of cinematic breadth, especially in the second movement, which depicts the Bloody Sunday massacre in St. Petersburg. The second symphony was written to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the October Revolution and even at only twenty minutes in length, it has no shortage of drama. Dismissed by the composer later in his career as an experiment, it remains an important step in the development of one of the greatest symphonists. Both works receive defi nitive performances here, enhanced by stunning surround-sound.

  • There is no record of how Purc e l l s unpre c eden t ed youthful genius was received by his contemporaries at this time, though it seems logical that it must have caused

considerable wonder in the musical world centered around Westminster. The reality of London musical life was in fact diffi cult, frenetic and grossly underfunded, and, along with the whole city, was thrown into confusion with the outbreak of the plague, the war with the Dutch and a catastrophic fi re. In the midst of this chaos, a lifelong friendship developed with Blow, who relinquished his post as organist at Westminster Abbey to the twenty year-old Purcell in 1679. Was it an act of simple generosity alone or was it also recognition of a bewildering superiority and the inevitable need to stand aside? The listener can decide with this selection of odes and songs by both composers. Countertenor soloists Carlos Mena and Damien Guillon are backed by the stylish and adept accompaniment of Philippe Pierlot and his Ricercar Consort. These two remarkable singers present a deeply emotional program to celebrate the 350th anniversary of Purcells birth.

  • Mirares release of Henri Demarquette playing the cello music of Saint-Sans includes all the major works for cello solo as well as the beloved Carnival of the Animals, which features the instrument prominently. The composer, apparently concerned that the piece was too frivolous, suppressed performances of it and only allowed one movement, Le cygne, (for cello solo) to be published in his lifetime. Saint-Sans did, however, include a provision which allowed the suite to be published after his death. It was fi rst performed in 1922, and it has since become one of his most popular works. Joined here by one of his favorite accompanists, Brigitte Engerer, Demarquette plays a cello built by Italian luthier Goffredo Cappa in 1697.

Though Mendelssohn was still a teenager when he wrote his second quartet, Op.13, he was already an experienced composer of chamber music. He wrote the work two years after Ludwig van Beethoven published his last quartets. Mendelssohn was fascinated by them, carefully studied the scores and included many quotes from Beethovens quartets in his own opus 13. His sixth and fi nal quartet, Op.80, was composed after the death of his sister, which was a devastating blow to Mendelssohn. The quartet was also his last major composition, as he died only two months after its completion. The Modigliani Quartet offers thoughtful and inspired performances of these cornerstone works.

German Baroque poets produced works of astonishing quality that were essential to the intellectual climate in which Johann Sebastian Bach grew up. The purpose of this CD is to draw attention to the link between the associations and ideas that informed the poets of the baroque era and the music of J.S. Bach, and so inspire listeners to explore the interaction of music and text in greater depth. Featured works are two of the solo violin Partitas - some of the most eloquent music Bach wrote - played by Kolja Blacher. Completing the concept, Frank Arnold offers evocative poetry readings interspersed between movements.

    The poetry of Bachs music

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDHaydns opus 54 quartets fi t the archetype of the Classical quartet, but expand the emotional and harmonic language in fascinating ways. The usual wit, humor and drama are in evidence as always, but here Haydn introduces new moods - offering music that is at times seductive and mysterious. The Prkny Quartet delve deep into this expanded palette, bringing out every nuance. The quartets of opus 44 were written at the height of Mendelssohns career.

Their radiant, virtuoso allegros and singing slow movements tinged with nostalgia are brilliant examples of the composers knack for eloquent musical communication. The Four Pieces for String Quartet were among Mendelssohns fi nal works. The acclaimed Zemlinsky Quartet bring out all the joys and sorrows present in these quartets.

  • SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe Guarneri Trio Prague returns to Brahms with a second volume of his Piano Trios. The trio number two, opus 87, was completed in the summer of 1882 and is a richly romantic work, full of soaring melodies. The A major trio, opus posthumous, is likely from the early 1850s. Its attribution is not certain. This sturm and drang trio is one of the most mysterious components of the composers legacy, originally culled from a collection of musical manuscripts by musicologist Ernst Bcken in 1924.

This welcome re-issue features rarities from Hans Schmidt-Isserstedts recordings for the Capitol label. Serious listeners, as well as members of the conducting profession, have long searched for these rare performances. The set includes music by the conductors favorite composer, Mozart, as well as symphonies by Haydn, Brahms and Schubert. Beethoven is represented by the third piano concerto, and the set concludes with opera excerpts from Schuberts Rosamunde and Wagners Ring Cycle.

  • File in: World / PortugalBorn in the southern Portuguese town of Beja in 1975, Antnio Zambujo has matured into a major voice in a new generation of fado singers. After early clarinet studies, he began singing following success in a regional fado contest at age sixteen. Zambujo turned professional once the renowned composer Mario Pacheco invited him to sing in Lisbons Clube de Fado. But what propelled him into the national limelight was his role as Francisco da Cruz in the musical Amalia, based on the life of Amalia Rodrigues. Guia is Zambujos fourth album, following 2007s Outro Sentido, which was a Songlines Top of the World selection. His music merges cante Alentejano (a unique traditional style from the Alentejano region) and fado a daring fusion the singer has pulled off with aplomb.

  • File in: World / SenegalSenegalese singer Nuru Kane left Dakar in the late 1990s. He migrated fi rst to London, then to Paris. In those cities, his multi-instrumentalism as a guitarist, bass player and singer put him in high demand. However, it was a trip to Morocco that exposed him to the music of the Gnawa, and it became a turning point in his musical career. Kane left Morocco with a Guimbri and returned to Paris where he formed a band. Overall, his music refl ects the meeting between North and West African musical styles. Number One Bus looks back over his years in London. Its urban theme comes from observing people over three years taking the same bus from his neighborhood in Bermondsey in South London. While remaining faithful to Gnawa music, key to his artistic identity, this album adds a pronounced blues touch to his work.

File in: JazzThe arrival of a new record by Angelo Debarre always cheers up fans of the gypsy-jazz school. Rare indeed are the musicians who can maintain the same perfection of form - and constantly renew its richness - while sweeping across such a vast spectrum: from swing that kicks to lilting waltzes and lyrical gypsy ballads. Originally produced by Dave Kelbies Lejazzetal setup in London to immortalize some remarkable studio-sessions, Impromptu was never distributed outside of an intimate circle of swing-enthusiasts. This marks the albums fi rst commercial release, so Djangophiles can fi nally get another taste of the exceptional qualities of Debarres London quartet.

  • SACD Hybrid/ StereoFile in: JazzAs Oliver Nelson is known primarily as a big band leader and arranger, he is less well-known as a saxophonist and organizer of small ensembles. The Blues And The Abstract Truth is his triumph as a musician, and literally defines the sound of an era. For this masterpiece, Nelson assembled one of the most potent modern jazz sextets ever. Lead trumpeter Freddie Hubbard is at his peak of performance, while alto saxophonists Nelson and Eric Dolphy (Nelson doubling on tenor) team to for an unlikely union that was simmered to perfection. Bill Evans (piano), Paul Chambers (bass) and Roy Haynes (drums) can do no wrong as a rhythm section.

  • SACD Hybrid/ StereoFile in: JazzFor many fans, the equation Count Basie = Big Band Jazz is indisputable. Upon listening to these eight numbers, a new equation becomes equally clear - less is more when it comes to swing. Bob Thiele, Impulse producer, came to the conclusion that even with a meager budget, a whole lot of music with a terrifi c sound could be squeezed into the grooves. As always, the great soloists of the Basie big band are on top form. First and foremost is Frank Wess, who demonstrates why the fl ute is so popular for its sound-coloring and as a solo instrument. Thad Jones on the trumpet is outstanding in all the numbers and is equally important as composer and arranger. On this disc, carefully remastered for SACD by APO, the Count, delivers one adrenaline-like thrill after another.

  • SACD Hybrid/ StereoFile in: JazzOut of the Afternoon is a 1962 set from the Roy Haynes Quartet which, at the time, consisted of Haynes, Henry Grimes on bass, Tommy Flanagan on piano and Roland Kirk on saxes, manzello, stritch and flutes. The album is a delightful mix of technique in arrangement and performance, with all of the musicians delivering terrifi c work Haynes drumming is absolutely wonderful here, lightly dancing around the other instruments. Flanagans piano playing is equally light and delicate, and Grimes bass work is outstanding. Theres not much that can be said about Kirks fl uid sax and fl ute work that hasnt already been said a hundred times.

  • SACD Hybrid/ StereoFile in: JazzCollaborative albums such as this one have always been something of a stunt on the part of the record label, with the artists themselves usually stuck with too little time to work out something that would easily act as a functional compromise. Many of these albums, then, have faded away with time. Impulse, however, had more than its share of solid collaborations. This one is a lot of fun, whether its the daffy cut-up of Limbo Jazz or the slow New Orleans smoke of Wanderlust. All present turn in nice performances on this set of Duke Ellington numbers.
