Time Pieces, double-bass player Kyle Eastwood’s second album for Jazz Village, shows he’s ready to take it to the next level. Joined by Brandon Allen on sax, Quentin Collins on trumpet, Andre McCormack on piano and drummer Ernesto Simpson, Eastwood offers a cool mix of originals and covers that is guaranteed to please. Vocalist Thana Alexa makes her Jazz Village début this month with Ode To Heroes — a remarkable album dedicated to the people who have inspired her personally and musically. Violinist Rachel Podger returns to Vivaldi with L’estro armonico — her third set of Vivaldi concertos for Channel Classics. Hyperion’s star cellist Steven Isserlis plays Russian concertos on his latest release, which pairs works by Prokofiev and Shostakovich. The Tallis Scholars, better known for early music, present Tintinnabuli — a stunning disc of choral music by Arvo Pärt. The harmonia mundi label’s three priorities lead off with the first volume in a trilogy of Schumann discs pairing the composer’s concertos and piano trios. On this release, Isabelle Faust plays the Violin Concerto. Batting second and third, the Britten Sinfonia performs Dimitry Sitkovetsky’s transcription of Bach’s Goldberg Variations and soprano Sunhae Im makes her solo début with an album of Baroque cantatas. Last but not least, Delphian artists David McGuiness and Concerto Caledonia work their usual magic with their interpretations of the music of Purcell, accompanied by a bevy of folk music luminaries.

Marc-André Hamelin plays Mozart Piano SonatasEight of Mozart’s divinely inspired Piano Sonatas here receive performances of mercurial inspiration from consummate virtuoso Marc-André Hamelin. Two Rondos, a Fantasia, and a decidedly quirky Gigue complete a delight of a double album. His four Haydn albums have enthralled — this new Mozart will not disappoint.

IMPORT Joshua is one of four so-called ‘victory’ oratorios Handel composed in the late 1740s, which commemorate the defeat of the 1745-46 Jacobite Rebellion. It takes as its subject matter the biblical story of Joshua, who roused his people to a sequence of divinely aided victories. The oratorio remained a favorite with English and continental audiences until well after Handel’s death. This recording, taken from live performances, features a superb cast of soloists supported by the FestspielOrchester Göttingen, conducted from the harpsichord by Laurence Cummings.

The composers of this period were deeply affected by the Thirty Year’s War as well as the War of Spanish Succession. The finest music inspired by this turmoil is vividly performed by Jordi Savall and his ensembles. The set ends with a fantastic performance of Handel’s Jubilate Deo. The series will also feature concerts from throughout the season, using the most up-to-date recording and production techniques. The inaugural release, recorded in 2000, features soprano Barbar Bonney, accompanied by André Previn at the piano. IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDL’estro armonico, the title of Vivaldi’s first published collection of concertos, is commonly translated into English as “harmonic fancy.” However, the word oestrus actually means “heat, stimulus, vehement impulse or frenzy” — a better allusion to the startling passion and energy of these twelve concertos, which are widely considered to be among the most influential Baroque orchestral music ever written. Following on their successful and widely acclaimed releases of Vivaldi’s La Cetra and La Stravaganza, this release by Rachel Podger and her ensemble Brecon Baroque captures all of the vitality and freshness of Vivaldi’s invention: its rhythmic energy, melodic and harmonic intensity, textural sensuousness, technical brilliance and dramatic flair.

IMPORT Delving into the past is never a simple matter for David McGuinness and his indomitable early-music-meets-nu-folk group Concerto Caledonia. But the present venture, even more than most, eludes verbal description. The group returns – in the company of some starry guest names – to the territory of their 2011 Britten tribute Revenge of the Folksingers, now engaging with music by Henry Purcell in a tapestry of arrangements and creative responses that is never less than surprising. Variations by eighteenth-century Scot James Oswald rub shoulders with the Purcell tunes they are based on, while original songs by Olivia Chaney and Ana Silvera and some literally ‘electrifying’ instrumental contributions add to the general air of expectations confounded.

Accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra, violinist Lorraine McAslan and saxophonist Amy Dickson delight in the music of American composer Charles Martin Loeffler. The second volume in Dutton’s survey of Braunfels’s orchestral music spans from his luxuriant early Symphonic Variations on a French Children’s Song to the utterly delightful orchestral suite The Glass Mountain. Cellist Alice Neary is the featured soloist in a disc featuring the première recording of Herbert Howells’s Cello Concerto (now in a performing edition by Jonathan Clinch). In the best Dutton tradition, the album’s coupling is conductor Ronald Corp’s Cello Concerto, a work well worth discovering.

IMPORT Dutton presents three unmissable releases featuring music by Havergal Brian, Charles-Marie Widor and Malcolm Arnold. Martyn Brabbins and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra continue their Havergal Brian series for Dutton with a disc that includes the Symphonies Nos.5, 19 and 27, coupled with the tuneful Festal Dance. On the third volume in Dutton’s series of Widor’s orchestral music, conductor Martin Yates leads the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and soloist Sergey Levitin in La Nuit de Walpurgis, the delightful Symphony No.1 and Widor’s Violin Concerto. The Arnold recording features Yates conducting three major works written in the mid-1970s when the composer was based in Ireland — the Symphony No.7 the Fantasy on a theme of John Field and the Philharmonic Concerto.
IMPORTDespite being a prolific composer in nearly every genre, Saint-Saëns is known today largely for his Organ Symphony, piano concertos and Carnival of the Animals. The two Piano Trios, composed in 1863 and 1892, are among the composer’s finest works. Inspired by the terrain and music of the French Pyrenees, the Piano Trio No.1 is a melodic and cheerful work. The second trio is a more serious and thoughtful work, in which the composer holds fast to traditional form and melody in the wake of contemporary trends. On this recording, Trio Latitude 41 get the right balance between emotion and intellect, with interpretations that are both passionate and virtuosic.

IMPORT To celebrate Arvo Pärt’s 80th birthday, Gimell presents a new recording of some of the Estonian composer’s finest a cappella choral works. This is the first album of contemporary music from The Tallis Scholars since their famous 1984 recording of works by John Tavener. The program here includes several major works including the Magnificat, Sieben Magnificat-Antiphonen, Triodion and I Am the True Vine. The album’s title refers to the compositional style Pärt developed in the 1970s and now employs in most of his works. This simple style was influenced by the composer’s mystical experiences with sacred chant. Tintinnabuli works often have a slow and meditative tempo and a minimalist approach to both notation and performance.

IMPORTThe penultimate volume in Hyperion’s four-part survey of the complete solo piano music of Ernő Dohnányi focuses on music from the period when the composer’s preeminent position was assured. The titles of the largest works here, Ruralia hungarica
and the Variations on a Hungarian Folksong, mask in their nationalistic ostentation the skill of a true master of piano composition. Martin Roscoe inhabits the world of Dohnányi’s music like no other, and this new recording is a joy.
IMPORTThe official titles of the works performed here are not helpful: what they conceal are the most extraordinary sound-worlds from two composers at the vanguard of the contemporary Polish music scene, and the magicians of the Royal String
Quartet summon from their instruments sounds of collective and individual wonder. This is music to grab the attention of its audience — whether willing or not — and it will leave listeners emphatically having chosen a side of the fence.

Lionel Friend conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and BBC Singers, together with a huge cast of some of the finest British soloists of the day. The original performance was made possible by the Havergal Brian Society’s rediscovery of the full score, lost since World War II, and this release is issued with the society’s generous support. The first of Brian’s five operas, The Tigers is set in August 1914, at the beginning of World War I. The main action chronicles the comic misadventures in training of an Army-style ‘ancient regiment’ called The Tigers. Issued with a full libretto, prefaces from original BBC producer Elaine Padmore and conductor Lionel Friend, and copious documentation by Havergal Brian expert Malcolm MacDonald, The Tigers is essential for any 20th-century opera or British music enthusiast.

IMPORTThis release from Wergo focuses on the young Polish composer Jagoda Szmytka. Szmytka completed her masters in composition and electronic composition at the Karol Lipinski Academy of Music in Wroclaw. Her composition teachers included Pierluigi Billone,
Beat Furrer and Gerhard Müller-Hornbach. With the works on this recording, Szmytka explores the physicality of sound and examines the contact between the bodies of the performer and the instrument. She describes her use of the mixture of raw and sublimated materials as the “sculpting of sound.”
IMPORTThis recording is dedicated to early works by the Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov (born 1937). Sylvestrov studied at the Kiev Conservatory, where his composition teachers included Borys Lyatoshynsky. Sylvestrov is perhaps best known for
his post-modern musical style; some, if not most, of his works could be considered neoclassical and post-modernist. Using traditional tonal and modal techniques, Sylvestrov creates a unique and delicate tapestry of dramatic and emotional textures, qualities that he suggests are otherwise sacrificed in much of contemporary music.

IMPORT Chamber music by German composer Detlev Müller-Siemens is the focus of this release entitled Traces. The four works here were written between 2002 and 2009. In them, the serenity and thoughtfulness of the form contrast with the inner
turbulence that comes from a musical language that does not follow any preexisting patterns. Müller-Siemens studied at the Musikhochschule Hamburg, taking composition lessons with Guenter Friedrichs and then continuing with György Ligeti and Olivier Messiaen.
IMPORT French composer Mark Andre’s ...auf... consists of three independent orchestral pieces. Taken together, they can be heard as a cycle or as a triptych. Though they are related, each work begins again the search for new resonances and means for transitions
between sounds. Andre studied composition with Claude Ballif and Gérard Grisey at the Conservatoire de Paris. He continued his studies in Stuttgart with André Richard at the SWR Experimentalstudio and with Helmut Lachenmann.

IMPORTFile in: JazzItalian trumpeter Paolo Fresu has never shied away from expanding the vocabulary of jazz. Unusual concepts, avant-garde soundscapes and non-standard instrumental combos are challenges he takes on with relish. Brass Bang! is the fruit of Fresu’s live encounters with trumpeter Steven Bernstein’s ensemble Sex Mob, trombonist Gianluca Petrella’s Cosmic Band and Marcus Rojas, who is considered one of the world’s finest tuba players. The resulting album presents a little-big brass band with great soloists and an incredible universe of poetry, humor, sweeping rhythms and above all, fun.

IMPORTFile in: JazzTime Pieces, the new album by double-bass player Kyle Eastwood, is a musical self-portrait. Organized around the quintet’s often collective compositions, Eastwood offers a couple of covers (Herbie Hancock and Horace Silver) that show his passion for lyrical hard bop, and a fresh interpretation of one of his compositions for the cinema — one of the main focal points of Eastwood’s career. Full of melodic elegance and a sustained sense of groove, Time Pieces puts us right at the heart of a modern, contemporary jazz songbook. Eastwood is joined by Brandon Allen on sax, Quentin Collins on trumpet and flugelhorn, Andre McCormack on piano and drummer Ernesto Simpson.

IMPORTFile in: JazzSince he left Cuba in 1993, Omar Sosa has forged a distinctive musical path, fusing an array of world music, hip-hop and electronic elements with his Afro-Cuban roots. Sosa’s newest recording, Ilé, marks a homecoming for the pianist and composer to the Latin Jazz influences of his formative years in late ‘80s and early ‘90s Havana. Ilé means homeland in the Yoruba language of West Africa, and it is to the Latin Jazz roots of his native Cuba that Sosa returns for inspiration on this new studio recording. Ilé offers contemporary interpretations of some of the classic Cuban musical styles the world has come to admire. Listeners will enjoy this album’s mix of ballads and sophisticated mid and up-tempo arrangements.
